Rented a 5x10 unit for two years at this location. Decided to leave after the rate increased again-- my rate increased twice over a 2 year span. This is the main reason for my 3 star rating. Overall, this Extra Storage location is nice. Easy to get to, staff is friendly and very efficient. Feels very secure inside too. My building often smelled like tree and mildew but I didn't mind. Sometimes people would leave their trash in the lift area but it would be cleared by the next time I'd visit the unit. In the past year, this location changed the lock system to ONLY a Tubular Push Lock option which comes with a key. Before you'd have the option to pick which lock option you'd like to purchase or bring yourself. read more

This is the best storage facility in the Bay Area. Jamison, the property manager, is professional, polite, and able to keep things on the up and up. At 1st s nervous about getting a 24-hour access unit, but they have their clients property on lock and make it a top priority without being invasive as to what everyone is doing. They know when something looks suspicious, and they are on it. If you roll in without punching in your gate access code and then try to open any unit, a loud alarm goes off and CCTV is on you. I highly recommend this place i have had several storage units; this one is clean and personable, and you know your stuff is safe!! When we were moving in we had so much stuff it took us a couple of days to move everything in and make it all fit plus we accidently left one of their moving carts in our unit, Jamison was super awesome, being understanding of these two situations. he sent me a professional text about the cart and just let us know we were all good to take our time but to unblock the other units we hd blocked with our stuff if anyone came to access one of the units we had blocked with our stuff . Everyone should BE AWARE they raise the rent at every opportunity, not just to cover their costs, but to gouge tenants as they know tenants don't want to move. It's just not easy to move. After 8 years I was paying just over $315/mo for a 4'x20' space. Right now you can move into a 4'x22' space in the same facility for $129/mo. I finally moved out. Also really bad is their app, which they force you to use. A few years ago they replaced all the doors with new ones that have built-in locks and no place to add your own lock. The only way to unlock it is using their app with GPS turned on and your location shared. This failed on me three times, all off business hours. I called in to tech support and they said "sorry", it turned out (the first two times) to be a dead battery. I have the support case numbers and technician first names saved. I complained to the manager and he apologized and gave me $50 off that month's rent. When it happened a second time they only gave me $20 off. The last time it happened the technician finally got it working. Typically it takes my phone two or three attempts before the app "wakes up" the lock, acknowledges my GPS location, and finally unlocks the unit. This is the worst business experience I've had over the last 20 years in the Bay Area. read more

You know, I really thought the first time I moved in there that everything would be okay, the staff was great. The next few times that I was there I kept seeing the same people which makes me think that people are allowed to loiter or live there. (Hi guy in green creepy van, I see you too) I noticed that the grounds were never cleaned, I noticed a Q-tip that just hung out on the stairs every single time I was there. Q-tip and I became friends and I named him Hank. Several times I go to use the elevator and there is garbage in there. Today I asked to use the little cart and the guy gives me nothing but absolute attitude it was almost comical. Someone was playing Pablo Poopcasso and laid some artwork on the wall and I noticed his painting was dry so that means that someone isn't walking around checking the grounds. I don't deserve to walk past shitted boxers. I pay monthly to store my shit, no pun intended. It was great like a 5th grader wrote a little suspense thriller "who pooped in the stairwell?" I seriously will be out of here soon and I couldn't be happier. Not impressed at all. read more

I have no problem at all with the staff or the facility--both are great. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable, facility is clean and in good order. However, I think some of the pricing and policies are a little unfair/deceptive. For example, the customer is required to buy insurance on the unit. Why not include that in the original quote, since you cannot rent a unit without it? Also, if you want any of your money refunded to you for an early move-out, you are out of luck unless you have notified them before your last month begins. In my case, I only used the unit for eight days this month, but will have to forfeit the rest of the month's rent since I have already paid it. No doubt my unit has already been re-rented, so they are collecting double for these next three weeks... read more

THE PREDATORY LENDERS OF THE STORAGE INDUSTRY, I found out sadly. PROS: clean, and well-lit. NEGATIVES: They raise your rent twice a year, so after 1 year my rate went from $179 to $220, which is a WHOPPING 23% raise. They have this guy running the place who using his calm voice only to overcharge you and try to make you believe that other storage companies raise rates like that, saying it is an industry standard. He got me to pay for another month by waiting for a supposed rate increase appeal, which of course was rejected. They make their money by having people move in and out quickly it seems. NOT a good way to have any loyal customers beyond GANGBANGERS storing contraband temporarily. THEY HAVE A VERY POOR BUSINESS OUTSIDE OF MAYBE FOR 2-3 MONTHS. AFTER THAT, FORGET ABOUT THEM, THEY WANT YOUR MONEY AND WILL SAY ANYTHING TO KEEP YOU PAYING HIGH RATES. Don't make the mistake I did- find a local place and read the reviews. I have rented from them for 2 years, my rental fees have increased 4 times. They are price gouging customers because of the rental market

This place is corrupt it drained my card more than once and I never gave them permission to deduct payment from my card. I prefer to make payment in person with cash. I initially opened the account but never agreed to them taking my money off of my card every month. I never got a call regarding this. It took me a very long time to find work, and I have needed to catch up to my bills and these guys messed me up last month by doing this because they took all my money then too, and i was supposed to make a payment to PG&E and couldn't and it was turned off during the holidays! I am sick of these guys taking it upon them selves to take my money without permission I want my money put back on my card now! read more

From the moment I called all frantic because I was moving same day and i didnt realize that I needed a storage but I did! The call went smooth and the storage place is one block away. In which I have used it prior to, and again had the best experience! I was given One month free which was so helpful with a move! Vanessa was more than kind and super helpful, she was very informative she def knows her job and well! My experience at this location was seamless. I reserved my space online, immediately received a digital confirmation and the site staff was diligent in reaching out to me to confirm they'd received my confirmation and welcomed me to the ESS Family. The Doolittle location is well kept and David was both knowledgeable and engaged with questions regarding my storage needs WITHOUT imposing the "up sell" approach which led me to actually spend a little more per month. Barring this is the base culture of this entire team and it's management ( based upon my initial experience), I highly recommend ESS. read more

Let them know we were emptying our warehouse to remodel, offered to pay in full over the phone and sign paperwork when I got ther because I couldn't get there until 1pm due to a delivery and while I was on my way over on time they rented it out from under me. All you need to know comes straight from the CEO's mouth: "ExtraSpace has 'probably been the most aggressive' major self-storage operator when it comes to rent increases. ExtraSpace uses what you could call a '5-9-9-9 system'. After a customer has been with ExtraSpace for five months, his or her rent is hiked. That's followed by rent increases at subsequent nine-month marks. On average, about 50,000 ExtraSpace customers are hit with a 9 percent rent increase every month." (Remarks by Spencer Kirk, Extra Space CEO, at the 2013 NAREIT investor forum as quoted in The Storage Facilitator post, June 20, 2013.) Conveniently no one mentioned that insurance is required to rent there or that they will increase the rent with 30 days notice at 6 months and then every 9 months after that supposedly based on market rates, vacancies, etc. However, the district manager said he's never seen a rate decrease so really that's all bs and they just want to extract more and more money out of you. My first increase was 17%. Needless to say I'll be looking for a new facility soon. Neither the facility manager or the district manager could do anything other than offer a 2 month credit for the difference in the price change. ESS is a Utah based real estate investment trust with zero customer service concerns at the corporate level. The facility itself seems clean and nice enough The local staff did request a rate change, but was denied by corporate. My complaint on the main website was responded to the same day by the district manager and he explained all their policies clearly and was pleasant to deal with, but it's a conversation that should have happened 5 months ago when I moved in, not now when I'm already there. If you're just going to use the space short term they may be okay, but if you are looking for a longer term rental, look elsewhere! read more

I think this is my first review, but please know it's trustworthy. (I have more to write soon from my engagement weekend; hope to get to those soon.) Started at Extra Space Storage (ESS) in summer 2013 for a small unit for around $42/month. Every 9-12 months they seem to hike their fees. I called them on the phone on it and they offered me the consolation that what i'm getting currently--a 40% increase at $59/month--is still cheaper than what they offer new customers, which means nothing to me. Most businesses would value loyalty and at worst keep the price the same or add some perks; it's the exact opposite at ESS. Their reason? They do assessments of property values, etc. every 9-12 months and things go up, so my price goes up. I love the East Bay dearly, but there's no way West San Leandro property increases at rates of 20%/year. If so, someone should let Vicne Vaughn's character from True Detective know and to stop wasting his time in Vinci and come up this way to make some clean real estate money. I suppose people don't often get storage facilities for short-term plans, and it's a pretty big hassle to move ones stuff to another when you're disgruntled with rates, service, or what have you. So why would they choose to reward loyalty when it's such an inconvenience to change? I'll be braving the inconvenience to find somewhere else. You should avoid it ESS altogether in the first place. read more

We just got an upstairs unit and I have no problems so far. I got a follow up call almost immediately after reserving from AJ one of the managers. He was also there the morning of our move in and was extremely helpful. Definitely knew his stuff. Since I haven't really had any problems yet, I would say the only thing that was a bummer was the $13 for insurance a month. When you're only getting a tiny space, that almost a 50% increase of what you were planning on paying. I'm worried about these rent price increases as well, so I'll check in with an update in a couple months. read more

DON"T DO IT! Pros: Easy to get in and out of... even for the creepy guy in the unmarked, white van with no windows, that just follows in random people to store his child remnants. Cons (which they are): Continuing nuisance rent increases. If this is how they treat loyal customers they no longer need my business. After checking with other rental companies in the area the going rate for my unit was much less. Oh, don't use their online system to vacate. You'll be paying the full amount for the month, no matter when you move out.They won't return any money to you because you've already prepaid. Of course they state it's in the contract, but what they don't tell you and in the fine print (which the human eye can't detect, is that they want your first born and when you die they own your organs and mineral rights to any land you may have available. Just as another past patron noted before: *****THEY HAVE A VERY POOR BUSINESS OUTSIDE OF MAYBE FOR THE FIRST 2-3 MONTHS. I needed extra storage for a flood at my home to save things that were salvageable. The prompt set up to get my belongings to a secure and dry space was so easy online and the hours were great for me as well. I felt safe and the area was always tidy when I was present.
