First I want to thank the hard working staff at Extra space as our stay could have not been great without the excellent customer service. In the beginning, we rented there when It was A-American storage and then it changed to Extra Space storage. We were there 20+ years. My only major concern that made us leave this storage facility is it raised our rent pretty frequently, and when I complained about it they responded by saying they have no control over it. Extra space storage can raise the rent every quarter or to the industry standard (unknown what that means.) if they desired. I moved several times to a smaller unit to lower the monthly cost just to have them rapidly raise my rent by at least $50. I finally got fed up with receiving post cards from Extra space storage telling me that my rent was going up again. This last time I moved out and two months later here comes the $50 increase. I'm in a good storage now with no surprise rental raises. Extra charge storage, I meant extra space storage is now a distant memory. I have been renting here for almost 20 years. I've read the reviews and come to the conclusion that either some people have never rented ANY self storage before or have some things to learn. This facility is old. I was told it is one of the originals on the island, back from the seventies? So it doesn't have all the bells and whistles like some of the newer storages, such as air conditioning and passenger elevators. It's an awesome location though. Right off the Waimalu exit in both directions and then right back on if needed. No fuss. When I first rented here it was A-American Self Storage and woof, it was ruff. Dirt cheap but the place was never cleaned, 2nd floor didn't have lights, and limited access hours. It has been upgraded over the years when Extra Space Storage took over. I have rented with 2 other companies (Hawaii Self Storage and Public Storage) in Pearl City. I'd go between them all, depending on who has the best prices or deals. I've learned all of them have rate increases, so best to ask them about it. Of the 3, Extra Space Storage is the only one that was helpful. Back in the day, increases were like $5-$15 dollars. The past couple years it has been a lot more, like $20-$40. When I get one, I would call the manager Kim, and she was almost always able to help me. They told me if I was able to prepay my rent months ahead, I can avoid an increase in the duration. The other 2 companies wouldn't do anything and their increases were higher. The girls at Extra Space Storage are so sweet and I love to pop into their office and talk story. As for break-ins, it's apparently a thing in self storage. Some companies the insurance is required and others optional... I'd recommend getting it. While renting at Hawaii Self Storage, someone on my floor was broken into. He told me what happened and I later called the office the next morning and asked them about it but the lady in the office said they don't have break-ins. NOPE, I don't like lies and decided it wasn't for me. I really wish I didn't have to pay for storage, but my apartment has little space... my storage options are my bedroom closets and my linen closet. Until real estate gets cheaper (which is never), I'm stuck with my storage unit to hold my Christmas decorations and other memorabilia. TRUST ALL THE 1-STAR REVIEWS. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE I found out first hand why this place is marginally cheaper than other storage places in the area. Poor customer service. Plain and simple. I signed a rental agreement for an 8x16 locker with a promo code I found thru work. I thought this code was for all DOD employees, but apparently only for active duty members. No prob. My mistake. Since I was able to find similar size/price units at more reputable companies, I just decided to cancel and go elsewhere. I see a credit hit my credit card, but it's over $50 short. So I call them at around 3:30pm to get more details. Lady gives me the "uhhhhh I don't know. Let me call you back". Cue red flag alerts. I go on with my afternoon, and at 6:00pm, still no phone call. So I have to call them again. No apology for not calling me back. They answer like I'm inconveniencing them by calling back. Another red flag She says there's a $20 lock fee that they are "working on refunding". Dare I say, another red flag. The remaining missing credit was for an "admin fee". She claims it is non-refundable and refuses to hear me out, but rather just tells me over and over "check the lease. check the lease". I try my best to rationalize with her, telling her the lease is void since the price I initially paid cannot be fulfilled. But as expected, zero willingness to listen to me. Just more "check the lease. check the lease". Clearly unable to get thru to her, I finally throw in the towel and go on with my night. It's unclear whether the bad customer service stems from bad management or bad corporate training. Either way, I wanted to spread the word to the community. Well HOT DANG! Lmao. I wish I read these reviews before renting here. Rented here because price was decent. Said to have gotten a deal of 1st months rent but realized I've never gotten that deal. PROS: NOT AVAILABLE. Let's go straight to cons CONS: no AC available in units which makes moving items and sweating ur butt off very frustrating. Hardly any lighting. It's kinda hard to see without storage units having bright lights. These guys went cheaply on putting up light bulbs. Customer Service SUCKS! It's like all they do is stay in the office which is located in a. Separate building as the storage units. If your having issues with storage unit and u come in earlier than the time the workers are there, your SOL. U either wait or u suffer! They raise your rent every 6 months at a CRAZY PRICE! I think mines nearly got raised $100. Read ur contracts!!! They want u to pay more yet they don't honor their online prices. DO NOT RENT I PROMISE. I rented a 4X4 storage space form ESS since December 2023, which is all the space I needed to hold my stuff temporarily while I clean up my condo, just a few miles away. Access to the storage facility was very convenient for me, including the parking and the secured entrance/exit to the facility. The staff here are the most helpful. Especially Annie and Kim. I will definitely come back to rent again from this facility if the need arises again. read more

Nice friendly staff, clean storage facility, was close enough to U of H to store my daughters dorm room stuff. Many of of the closer facilities are alot more expensive and very crowded when dropping off and picking up stuff due to so many students using storage. This wasn't crowded, always plenty of carts to move stuff up and and down. Once stuff is in the car, the extra 10 minute drive was way worth the cost savings. read more

Like all storage facilities, constantly raising their fees. Vehicle's stored there, but had tires stolen along with a cracked window. Poor security measures. Make things much more difficult especially when needing to pay essential items of importance (i.e. rent, utilities, and bills). read more

Firstly, he was very courteous and polite, as well as knowledgeable in assisting me is getting several storage units that I needed. I needed to rent a small storage unit for the summer for my classroom supplies. I'm switching schools and there was no way I was going to bring all my stuff to my apartment (which is barely bigger than some storage units, as it is). I shopped around online and read tons of Yelp reviews before settling on Extra Space. Unfortunately there weren't any smaller (cheaper) units available at the location that's super close to me but there were some available at the Pearl City location (just off Kaahumanu). I made my reservation online (no payment necessary) and then went to the location later in the day to finalize the contract. Salina walked me through everything in a friendly and efficient manner. She led me to my storage unit, showed me exactly how to access the gate and the building, where the restroom was, what to do / who to call if there was any problem, etc. Then she went over the contract, I paid, and then I moved in the same day. It was super easy and stressless. My 4 x 6 unit is on the 2nd floor but there is a lift and carts you can use to move your belongings. It isn't air conditioned so it can get a bit hot, especially after pushing the cart to and fro... I'm happy with my storage unit - I feel it was a fair price and the location seems clean, safe, and secure. I may even keep it after the school year starts again to stow stuff from my apartment (Marie Kondo would not approve!). read more

We didn't even get the first month free as advertised. We would get letters indicating a increase In Fees every 6 months and that was our last straw. We have since closed out account and moved on. They held the gate open for me being as I was arriving right at closing. They delivered A+ customer service in my opinion. If I did have a critique it would be that the units have 9' or 10' ceilings, so stacking is limited. read more

Don't move in here unless you are planning to stay less than 6 months. Because Every six months they will automatically raise your monthly fee without ever stopping!!! But they do not tell you this when you move in nor it's mentioned online either so you move in thinking to pay a certain amount and you end up paying much much much more without any end in sight unless you move out which I'm looking forward to do ASAP. Miracle in disguise. Had to move right away and needed to find a place that would work with my income. I love love love the location and the staff was so helpful as far as making me feel welcome, answering my questions and letting me feel all my personal belongings would be secure. the staff definitely caters to your needs and are always available through phone and email. they extended the hours of the gate and the location is safe the east and west freeway on ramps less than a minute away. couldn't be happier with my choice read more
