Look no further if you need a clean, brightly lit facility for all your storage and personal needs. Despite three years of operation, this Extra Space Storage still looks almost new. Mine is a story about love, pregnant roommates, and a sudden relocation out-of-state all within the span of a few weeks. Time to move in with the beau, taking just the essentials. I ended my lease on a three bedroom household and promptly realized all these extra belongings needed to go somewhere. Extra Space Storage ended up as that somewhere due to an unbeatable combination of location (near I-88, I-355, Ogden, my Naperville home and work), price, and facilities. I required an indoor unit at the very least due to a precious four-poster cherry bedframe and oak kitchen table, and I estimated 10x15 as my preferred size. Extra Space offered a non-climate controlled, 10x15 unit on the first floor for the price of a 10x10 condemned to the far corners of the fifth floor, next to the Room of Necessity, at any other indoor storage place. The starting price came out around $89 per month, first month free, and eventually rose to $128 with taxes, then $146 at the end of my two year lease. But I'm digressing. Getting in and out is a snap through automated metal gates that swoop up rather than roll back. I always felt a bit leery one of these would karate chop the hood of my car when going through. Two large entrances allow drive up parking, and a stock of five dollies per side takes care of bulky loads. Elevators to the second level are right around the corner in a well-lit area with the added touch of a button to summon help from the front office. Aisles are wide, units clean, and very well lit most of the time. My automated fluorescent bulb didn't turn on during my last visits, possibly from disuse. The on-site office sells boxes, tape, shrink wrap, and moving kits for a pretty penny higher than elsewhere. On the other hand, discovering your hasty midnight wrapping job of Grandma's prized silver or your pottery Cubs bobblehead collection may require an emergency purchase. You can do that with minimal fuss. Office staff were unstintingly helpful and kind, and great about keeping that place just about spotless. Washrooms were never dirty. Extra Space comes out on top of Public Storage, U-Haul, and other facilities around because their structure is so clean, secure, and bright. I never felt odd wandering rows of units. The faint whiff of new car smell is sort of addictive, especially with a pregnant woman's enhanced olfactory senses. Online payment is easy and completely automated, if you so choose. Reminder alerts can be sent to your email to assure you avoid a late charge. Repetitive delinquencies may end up with your belongings for sale at auction on TLC, but they are generous for one or two days off during your tenancy. Terminating your lease requires no additional effort other than clicking an obscure button on the website. I had no trouble here, and recommend it to anyone who needs space. Always check their latest promotions for savings. One frustrating thing: rent increases are announced less than 30 days in advance, so be prepared to move quickly if you want to avoid a major upcharge. TAKE NOTE: * Facility access is prohibited after 10 PM. * No access from westbound North Aurora/Ogden due to concrete divider for North Aurora/Ogden turn lane! I have been at Extra Space Storage almost 2 years and have always had very good help from the very beginning. That includes phone conversations, personally speak with whom ever is at the desk, or even if the in-charge person is outdoors checking things or doing work there. As of recent, Todd was doing some repairs outside. He happened to walk passed my unit and checked with me to find out if everything was okay. I made mention of how I was pleased with the units, and the cleanliness and now the new attractive paint on the buildings. Todd asked if there was anything I needed help with. Well, he kindly moved a awkward and somewhat heavy article for me! Oh sooo appreciated! This speaks for itself! Thanks Todd! Their is only one thing that is odd. For the indoor units the hallway lights turn off within a short time while putting things in order or whatever, at the time. It is a little irritating. I guess that is just the way the building was designed at the time. But everything else is in good order, and clean. I recommend this storage facility. Patty C. read more

This review is specifically about the Naperville/Ogden location. Here are a few minor gripes to warm up a bit. Rates go up constantly. In the winter, the gate or better the keypad has constant issues. At one point, the gates (both) were left open for weeks. If you happen to get locked out and try to use the customer service button on the terminal the system just hangs up on you. Why do we pay storage fees when the gates are being kept open? Some people were locked inside and couldn't leave. Pretty disastrous. Let's keep going! There is no lights in the individual units. There are bugs in the facility. The staff runs errands during office hours sometimes both at the same time. Also, when people read 'air conditioned' they assume it's kept at a set temperature. No such thing going on here. These units get warm in the summer and cold in the winter, just not as cold or as hot as the outside units without 'air conditioning' but way too hot/cold to store valuables e.g. art. Also, the fine print that you sign states that under NO circumstances are they responsible for any damage. Even when their employees would open all units and take it all, they are NOT liable ever. Pretty amazing piece of legal work. Now that we are warmed up, let's talk about the big stuff. There are no lines or signs that indicate how many cars should be in the loading bay. 9 out of 10 times, 3 cars easily fit next to each other and there are no issues with that. However, if you are perceived to park too close to another renter and that renter (BP) calls the Police, the manager on duty (L) takes sides and takes over the harassment while initial caller / renter drives off. You are now facing a Naperville police officer and the manager on duty in concert for what? Considering how many people get killed a year by police without doing anything wrong, any unnecessary interaction becomes pretty scary. On top of that, according to the responding officer and the final report, I did not violate any rules and didn't get a ticket or fine or anything. That experience left a profound impact on me as such treatment is unwarranted. That manager (L) was moved to a different location and the new manager did a wonderful job from then on out. She guided me through the complaint process and said that there aren't any records of that event so no reason to file my complaint. I was fine with that until I saw with my own eyes that my account had all kinds of records. I read my own files and that's also how I found out the name of the renter that called the Police. I highly doubt the legality of recording and storing notes about customer interactions. I also doubt customers are aware of it. I wasn't until I saw it with my own eyes. Also, keep in mind that there are storage units that have light inside, have a set temperature and have functioning gates.....at least so far! read more

So I've used a lot of different storage franchises for military reasons and I must say this storage facility is on top of their game. I treat what I own with respect and this company does the same, I can trust them to take of what is mine because they take such care of what is theirs. I had no problems reserving a space via the web and signing up for the lease in the office was easy. I was surprised they required insurance coverage through their company, but that's pretty standard and they are very inexpensive policies. Then, after I had an awful experience with a moving company, the manager of the place give me information for other movers, which I utilized and had a great experience. The facility is clean and with a manager on site I feel like the location is well secure. If that's all you need in a storage facility then I would recommend this location. However, from a service stand point I think the manager and assistant manager have a lot to learn about customer service. My experience at this location is that I rented a smaller unit and after trying to move in I noticed I didn't have enough room. The female assistant manager suggested me to rent a larger unit but because I had a month free (not really free btw $20+ $9 insurance) I had to purchase the larger, with no special and basically have two units the first month. She said it was a better deal but I questioned for whom? I decided to just keep my original unit for the month only to find out from the facility manager that I could have gotten a larger unit with just a $10 transfer fee. But found that out only with a week left in my unit. When I stopped in to the location the assistant manager said " I told you that you couldn't get two units on special and that's why I told you it was a better deal" spouting off in front of her boss. I really didn't want nor was I trying to get two specials. But a $10 transfer fee on a larger unit and 3 weeks (sorta free) inside that new unit is a better deal then renting two units! ($20+$9+$10 next month $89) or ($20+$9+$89+next month $89) you do the math. read more

Very, very clean and well-lit facility and the only one for at least 10 miles in any direction that still had one climate-controlled 20x10 unit available - very important since I was packing up the equivalent of a whole house! Georgianne who processed me in was very efficient and pleasant. Their prices are extremely competitive and I actually felt pretty safe (unlike another storage company I once used) being there at night. The handcarts for toting in one's goods are very much appreciated! Will use them again, for sure. read more
