Extra space is clean and they manage the property well. But... it all comes with a price. Make sure to read the contract when applying for a lease. They have a section where it states that your lease is subject to change with the demand of the units on property. So as the demand goes up your lease goes up. My wife and I have a lease for a unit and for the first three months we had set price and within one month it went up over $30! We literally moved across the world so we can't come and move out. This is some pretty terrible business! The really found a way to trap people into contracts and milk as much from them as the they can. read more

If you go 5 weeks back on the rent they charge you an additional processing fees $170 and place a lien on your possessions. Predatory business practices. Do your self a favor and choose another storage facility. read more

Ever since Extra Space Storage took over the property, the quality of the service has gone downhill. Vandalism, drug use, and homelessness inside the facility. After reporting these issues, the management does nothing. The regional manager keeps raising the rates. I cannot in all honesty recommend this company. read more

Five stars again!!!! If everything in the world was run like this, we would be living in utopia. Lol I have never, ever cared about any restaurant or business enough to write two five star reviews but I really want to make sure that readers understand that this ESS is phenomenal and I would trust them with my life. I mean I already kind of do, as they are holding my entire life of belongings from baby pics to my grandpas WW2 medals, to my furniture and handmade custom Hawaiiana. So anyway they were such a blessing when I had to put my stuff in storage a few months back, and I had put the lock on wrong and because they do daily checks and have tons of cameras, they are kind enough to put a new lock and secure my unit while I wasn't there. No charge ofc. They made sure my stuff was secure and protected. When I went back last week, they were so helpful and showed me to my unit, taught me how to properly apply the lock, and were so darn courteous! The entire experience is so easy that it actually reduces my stress level, bc I KNOW that when I deal with them or go to the unit, that it will be easy and hassle free and no weird random things will happen to mess it up. If you need a storage unit on island, I highly recommend, I can't recommend more, so much, to use ESS. So so convenient, easy online auto payments, easy parking and access to the building, super duper helpful employees (ALL OF THEM!), safe and reliable process. Even if you're east side like Waimānalo or as west as Chinatown, I would say it's worth it to use ESS as your storage unit. Plus it's by that Aloha Gas station (?) that is really good too. It's also near Safeway, Costco, longs, city mill, Ross, and other stuff. But the pandas there sucks fyi. Ok. Thanks. Ps also there's stray cats that are so cute in that parking lot! read more

Friendly staff, good facility, clean and secure. Temp is not a/c to human temp but acceptable for storage. We rented a couple of units on the first floor which makes it easier than going up in the elevators. Loading trolleys are provided and you can back up right to the door. Good place for temporary storage while moving. read more

I visited this location to pick up moving boxes. I had previously rented at unit at their Kalaukaua location. Hawaii Kai's store manager, Jennifer Brandenburg, was so wonderful to work with. Even though I was just buying some boxes, she was super helpful and informative. Her customer service is superb and her happy, upbeat personality made my day! If I could give 10 stars I would!!! read more

We moved into a 5x10 unit here not even three months ago for $164. They just decided to raise the rent by $100!!! See photos below of our last bill and the raise notice. I am beyond livid at a 60% rent raise this soon. Thanks for wasting our time and money. I will never rent space from them ag read more

I have NEVER met a more Capable, Professional, Pleasant, Helpful and Knowledgeable storage manager than Jennifer B., at Hawaii Kai! Her commitment to the client, overall experience and such broad knowledge of the company itself, and its offerings, surpass any storage facility manager I have ever worked with!! Thank you, Jennifer!!! read more

The customer service at this facility is anything but short of Amazing. I first met Anna to tour the facility to get an idea as to the size of storage unit I needed. She was very accommodating and offered to show us multiple units. Two weeks later I had the pleasure of meeting Jennifer, the facility manager whom again showed us multiple storage units to make sure we had enough room to store our belongings. She even took time to find us a unit in close proximity to the elevator. Her professionalism and customer service definitely went above and beyond. She was both personable and friendly. The online price was exactly what I paid and I felt confident in storing my household items with this facility and I know if I have any problems there are 2 great employees that will be of great service to me. Mahalo! read more

I want to thank Jennifer and Ana at Extra Space, they have been so accommodating with my storage needs, date changes and much more. They are both super patient and understanding with issues I was having with my dates. read more

First of all, I can't say enough about the staff at the Kalanianaole Hwy ExtraSpace storage. Deborah was wonderful. She was very helpful. She knew that I was going to have pallets, she started working on the transferring me to the unit next-door to my unit. So I have an easier time getting my pallets in the storage unit. Debrah wanted Jeff to do the transfer as a teaching moment, which, I just love when people learn how to do things, right. Just so you know, I'm retired so I am on island time and didn't have a problem with what she was doing with Jeff. I'm hoping it goes through, I have to say kudos to her team, her for going the extra mile. Definitely a five star operation. I have rented from different storage facilities before and these people at extra space storage went the extra mile for sure!! read more

I would give it five stars but they keep upping the price. I'll be priced out soon. That's the only draw back. Don't get multiple unit discounts either. Staff is awesome. read more

This place is clean, and in a great location. Because of that, they charge more to begin with, but I was ok with that base on location. Now, 2 months into having my storage unit, they sent me a notice that they were raising my price by 20% effective immediately. I truly thought this must have been a mistake so I went in and asked the manager, who said that in the agreement it says they have the right to raise the prices at any time. So that means that even if I was okay with this, who knows if they're going to raise it again in 30 days? This is just awful business practice, and I highly recommend you take your business elsewhere. As soon as I'm able to, I know I will. read more

This is a pretty old unit. There are no elevators. There are lifts that only you can put items in. My unit was on the 2nd floor. They charged me for a lock. The one in Hawaii Kai gave me a free one. This is not a temp controlled unit which for the price is what you get. It's old. I just have to use it for now. I should've checked it out before moving my stuff. read more

I stored a two-bedroom apartment's worth of stuff here for a year and thought it was a great experience and highly recommend it. Beginning with the tour of the facility, I was impressed. I've never seen a storage building so clean! The place is spotless top to bottom and you'll routinely see the staff walking around with a cleaning cart sweeping and cleaning. Location is a big factor here. It's perfectly located for people who live in Hawaii Kai and the nearby valleys. It's a two-mile drive from my apartment, which made it very easy to move most things myself. Speaking of moving, for big movers, they have a large loading dock with three spaces large enough to accommodate moving trucks. I even saw a full shipping container being unloaded here. You can't reserve the spaces, so it's first come first served, which can be a problem at busy times. Like others have noted, the price is a bit high and the contract terms are unfavorable, notably the clause that allows them to raise the rent price with 30 days notice. Absent, of course, is any mention of lowering the rent, and there's no insight as to why the rent is raised. So I dock a star for that. My rent was raised once in the year I stored things here, I think by about $50. With taxes and everything included I paid about $500/mo for a 10x15 first floor unit. It's cheaper than maintaining a lease on my old apartment, so I was okay with it, but I bet you can find a cheaper place in town. After a year in a dark garage, my stuff emerged entirely unharmed. No bugs, not even any dust. Exactly as I left it. I think considering how well this place is maintained, it makes it worth the price. read more

Friendly service. Always felt welcomed there. Rented intermittently every year and always the same experience. Mahalo

Be careful if youre doing long-term storage-- they gradually raise the prices on your storage unit pretty quickly. It being the only storage unit around, it's convenient and kept clean. read more

Clean and air conditioned. Easy way to open main door. I have only rented my storage space so will have to comment later when I "move in".

Been a customer for 3 years and had worked with 4 managers. Debbie by far is the ultimate professional. Caring, prompt execution, courteous. She well represents her company and goes beyond to assist others. I truly hope she will remain at the Hawai'i Kai location. Mahalo Debbie!!! -Ben Lee read more

Is this storage facility expensive, yes it is. But that is the only negative thing I can say about them. Their staff is so friendly, literally every one of them. Customer service is top notch, I couldn't have asked for better. They are the only storage facility in Hawaii kai, their pricing reflects that. But this facility is awesome, they ate top notch. Place is kept clean & they are so helpful. Definitely recommend! read more

After leaving my storage as instructed (empty and locks removed by end of month), my card ended up getting charged again. Dane, the new manager however took care of the issue and was very helpful and reversed the charge. While the price is still exorbitant, the service remains excellent, too bad the corporate after buying Storsecure wanted much higher profits. Been there for over 10 years, sad to go but I guess there are richer people who can afford to pay the new prices. Thank you again Dane and just for you, increased my review to 2 stars. If I could rate just the management at Hawaii Kai, then I would put 4 stars. read more

I rented the 5X10-foot storage space for 22 months. Initially, it was very reasonable. The rent has been raised twice. Recently, the monthly rent, insurance, and tax increased from $187 to $272 per month! I realized that we could replace what we stored in there several times a year for less than the annual rent! We moved a lot to our home and donated a lot to Goodwill. If the rent were more reasonable, I would have given 5 stars. The facility is well-maintained for the most part, clean, and air-conditioned. The office staff, Dane and Aunty Misty, are extremely helpful. Any business would benefit from their friendliness and efficiency. They get five stars! read more

Clean, organized, I feel safe coming and going here. Video monitoring. Good neighborhood. Friendly staff. Good price.

We had a 5x10 storage space on the main level that we had booked through Robert. His professionalism and customer service was so welcoming and inviting and he answered all of our questions. During the fires in Lahaina, Maui in 8/2023, Hawaii Kai Extra Space Storage donated 4 big storage units for us to store all the donations that we were not able to send over at once. They allowed us to keep the donation drop off location open longer to allow the community a chance to help Lahaina, Maui.
