They hiked the rent of my storage by 40%! They claimed they sent me a notice via snail mail, but I never received anything. Every other correspondence from them has been via email except for the notice of a 40% rate increase. What a surprise. This seems to be their m.o. I should have believed the things I read about them on social media from people in the neighborhood that they were a ripoff. Their customer service is equally pathetic. It seems like there's a new "manager" every month. Do yourself a favor and rent storage from some place else. The only good thing I can say about them is at least they are in my neighborhood and their introductory rates were fair, but beyond that it's a scam. read more

My experience with Extra Space Storage was really great! The location was quite convenient to us. The process of reserving a unit, leasing and accessing the unit was all really smooth. The units have high quality doors and are easily accessible, but also secure. There's a neat freight elevator that makes things easy and usually plenty of cargo carts you can use. The process of moving out and ending the lease was equally easy - no hassle, they were very flexible and overall the experience was great! We rented for about 2.5 months during the summer. I cannot overstate how terrible my experience here was. Over the course of a year, they raised the price twice - and by the end of the year, I was paying monthly fees that were more than double the agreed upon fee when I moved in. The fact that they could / would raise the prices this much was not made clear when I signed the initial agreement. If you're only going to use this facility for a month or two, I think you would be fine here. But any more than that and I would suggest finding a different storage facility. To get fair, I did not have any problems with the unit itself or with accessing the unit. read more

I am more than impressed with Clark and his management of Extra Space Storage. We started with one unit with overflow when my fiance and I moved in together, got a second unit quickly thereafter and when purchasing a home had to move our whole place into storage while we tried to close. Clark was beyond helpful. Even sold us moving boxes. It's clean, easy in/out access and with a staff this helpful we couldn't be more pleased to recommend this storage facility. ITS A STORAGE PLACE! I mean nothing special, no bells and whistles. They don't help you with your stuff, they don't harass you about your stuff. Pretty much once you sign your contract and get your space, you hardly see the people working. They recently went under new management and changed their logo. They also changed their hours. I believe that at one time it was 24 hour access but now they've limited to only 10pm on weekdays, longer on weekends. Monthly online billing available. They have various sizes, offer some floors with AC, offer a wine storage rider option. They have wheeled mobile ladders and carts that you can use if you need it. There is enough space for 2 tandem car parking inside and "loading zones" outside. About the only thing that is "special" about this place is that there is a nice park across the street and you can see people playing and enjoying the day while you put things you don't really need in a big locker that you are paying to hold the stuff you don't need. *sigh* read more

INACCURATE DESCRIPTION on the web is all I can say! Do yourself a favor and visit the facility in person before moving in. Disaster! I moved in two weeks ago,,, it's been such a stressful experience that it's hard for me to even describe! I needed a small unit, I arranged the boxes at home to make sure that everything will fit in. It turned out the unit that I booked was an upper unit, with a tiny door. Having my stuff on the ground, the only option they offered me was a giant unit with NO ROOF, I have to use rolling stair to get there, and I'm paying TWICE what I could pay elsewhere for a standard unit. I have rented from Extra Space Storage in downtown Chicago @ 901 West Adams, 60607, and @ 1170 North Skokie Hwy, Gurnee, 60031. Vince at the Chicago location is very friendly, communicative, and has been very understanding when there's been an occasional late payment. Bob and Marsi at the Gurnee location are very friendly and have kindly lent us a helping hand. They also made sure no one stole my expensive chairs when I had a shitty day and got left behind. Both facilities are extremely clean and well climate controlled (no bugs, thank God). I would recommend Extra Space to anyone; many thanks to all of you :) read more

Do not rent from this company! After signing up for a "special deal" of $99 per month they raised the rent at my 5th month by over 100%! They lure you in with a great deal and raise the rent exorbitantly. I understand an increase is in my cards but other places have a max of 10-20% per increase. To top it off, upon backing out of the facility the garage door slammed down on the roof of my car and damaged my roof. I have tried to resolve this issue and have been getting the run around for weeks. read more

I inquired about a storage space online and received a prompt and professional call from Chiquita James, the assistant manager. She invited me in to inspect the space to insure it met our needs. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT book this place. Went online and booked a unit for the next day. Was told a $65 a month rate with first month 1$. Had someone call me from the company and confirm the unit and those rates. Went in the next day for them to tell me I owed $157 and storage will be $99 a month because "those rates were offered for the day before" (even though I had called and booked for moving in the next day). They don't inform you of the lock you need to buy and insurance. Walked out and found a new company. Don't waste your time here. read more

I've had a storage need only twice in my life so far and after the 1st positive experience 10 years ago I came right back when the latest need arose. I would HIGHLY caution anyone going here alone... as the other reviewer stated, there are homeless folks LIVING here. I ran into a deranged man coming out of the bathroom with a cut on his head talking to himself not once, but twice while there to get things out of my unit. He knew the code, let himself out, and came right back in about a half hour later. The funniest thing is, I ran into another customer there and we both saw the homeless man. He told me has talked to the manager numerous times, and they say it's just too hard and too much trouble to evict them. Are you kidding me? Someone could push you into a unit and lock you up in there! Granted, it doesn't have to be a homeless person for something bad to happen to you, but come on! Plus they smoke in there... next thing you know, the place burns down with all your possessions. What BS to pay when clearly, you can live there for free with no ramifications! read more
