I went in yesterday to check out the sizes of the storage units since I needed more of a visual instead of just online photos (which is also very helpful, but it's easier to figure out what will fit if I am standing in the unit). Chip was INCREDIBLY helpful and quite patient while I "visualized". He listened to what I was trying to fit in there and came up with a better option than what I had thought of in the first place. Setting up my account/lease was relatively easy. If you have renter's insurance not through the company (I have mine with my car insurance company), be sure to bring a copy of the contract because they need a copy to rent you a unit. Otherwise you will have to get one through Extra Space. ALSO - check the internet prices and know what they are for this location. If you tell them you will go home and sign up there for it, they will honor the internet price in the office! The storage spaces themselves are quite decent. I like that each building you need to put your gate/passcode in in order to access that particular building - unlike places where you enter a code at the front gate and you can go wherever after you get in. The reason you need to put in your passcode (and not just enter if it's already open) is a very good reason. Each unit is SEPARATELY and LOUDLY alarmed, and if you don't put your passcode in and someone (or you) are opening the door to your unit, it will scream blood murder until it's fixed. Nice piece of security. They also have lots of WORKING cameras everywhere. Access times to the units are earlier and later than other places, which is awesome since I work wonky hours. OH! And if you're going in the winter time, BE SURE TO BUNDLE UP. It's COLDDDDDDDDD inside. Glad I had a long-sleeved top and a thick zipper hoodie on. IF YOU ARE GOING TO MOVE OUT, make SURE to give them 10 days' notice or you can't get the prorated rate for just a few days rent while you move out. We had moved to another one their locations in a different area, so we were still working with them, which had no bearing on any refunds. Also, there is no one above the local district manger, even at corporate, so DM is the final word. There was no compromise and the D.M. manager "Mike" does not have EMPATHY in his voice tone and sounds like he was reading a "script". He is a company man and is trying to do his job. We are planning to move out. --- Pros: (187 E. Sunny Oaks Ave Location) CLEAN, FRIENDLY LOCAL STAFF, VERY SECURE, FAST ELEVATOR. ~ Very nice place, and kept up well. Amy Pope, G.M. is a pleasure to work with, but she really has no power, at no fault of her own. Cons: "A BIG COMPANY" ~ ***DONT SIGN UP IN PERSON!*** You have to sign up online in order to get the lower price. The company WILL PENALIZE you and not make any adjustments. It's presently $38.00 difference on a 10 x 10 at the 187 E. Sunny. Location on 01/24/13. Thats more than $456.00 + more a year because you WALK IN. ~ Automatic rental increase after 5 months. We were paying $186.00 for a 10x10 and then it went up to $202.00. ($16.00 increase) I guess this is how they recapture the half off the first month or the price you pay for month to month. ~ ADA parking is in front of the sliding door (for loading and offloading the facility), so you basically have to break the law to get a truck in there if the one service ramp is occupied. Design issue or it may of been code required, still rather silly. ~ Third floor roof condensates at times, so make sure you cover your stuff. ~ Some of the doors have automatic closing devices in the event of a fire, so you don't have to prop them open, but not all of them. Increases time and labor costs. ~ Read other posts, A few courtesy garbage cans would be nice considering how much we were paying. My wife and I have given them 1 star, but had they given us the money back, adjusted for the internet pricing, It would of been 4 stars since the price increases are not unusual. 5 stars if the G.M. had more power to make changes because it is not easy to communicate with the company at times. As expected, because I'd used Ex SS before, I found the manager, Martha, to be above board when it comes to customer service. I had mentioned this level of service in my review of an Austin facility, so now its two in a row. She was professional, caring and personable. The price for storage was better than it's competitors and the location was perfect for me, in the short term. Pro - When Martha saw I had hit the wall when I was unloading my trailer, she walked out with a bottle of cold water and an offer to come inside her office to cool down. This location is by far one of the best in Extra Space Storage I've ever dealt with and I say this having had many different spaces at other properties within ESS, as well as other storage companies. This review is about the couple of units my wife and I have had for several years here. The facility is always very clean, the staff is VERY pleasant and helpful, and prices are often lower than competitors. The lighting, which can be unreliable I've found at other places, is very good. They provide several carts just outside the door, which may seem obvious, but I've found at other places they can be often m.i.a., but not here. I never experienced any problems with the elevator or access to the site. The bathroom is very well maintained. The site is tucked away in a little corner off Sunnyoaks and Dell, near San Tomas and Winchester. It's relative difficulty in being found aids somewhat in its attractiveness. A hidden gem. One small point is the small parking lot, but this has never really been an issue for us. It is quite cold one the main floor where we had our larger unit and the upper floor was unconditioned, but being made aware of this from the beginning helped manage what we put where. read more

This storage facility has a good location, the standard Extra Space Storage amenities (and Draconian built-in price increases), and a competent manager. While I stored there, the front gate (a Z sliding doorway) was totally unacceptable, easily triggered accidentally from inside, and sounded a loud siren alarm that would pierce your eardrums. Several months ago this was replaced with a much better standard set of sliding doors (think big box door style). Clean, well kept, locks and facility checked. My pet peeves -- 1) Sometimes some kind soul would lock the bathroom door after leaving, which effectively locks the bathroom out until the next day. Really annoying on a Sunday. 2) Despite numerous attempts, they never did fix the drinking fountain by the front door. Knocked off a full star for that. Also, the parking lot is oddly shaped so you'd better be a past master at parking if you bring in a trailer or a big rig. My ultimate solution was to back in from the street and park along the main entry driveway. I greatly appreciated the courtesy calls regarding payment. What I did not appreciate were the automated rate increases at six and nine month intervals. When I moved I saved $50 per month immediately, even though the manager claimed that I was still paying below-market rates compared to their new units. (Just checked: I was paying about $20 less than the 'Web rate' for a new unit of the same size.) The one time I pushed the hours, the manager was right on top of it (and me) which is a good sign. She was decent but firm about it. Be aware that the answer to "Can I throw away my stuff in the dumpster?" is a resounding "NO!" at this Mormon-owned establishment. No need to ask. A solid four stars if and when they fix the drinking fountain. Yes, I'm annoying about such things -- but if you offer an amenity, it would be nice if it worked. read more

Everyone who works here is super helpful. Nothing sketchy about this place. Well run, clean, easy to communicate with management. Reasonable prices, too. I thought I would need the unit for at least a year, but it ended up I only needed it for a couple of months. Since I wasn't locked into a contract I was able to leave when I needed to. I at one time wrote a glowing review for this location. Little did I know that Extra Space Storage is all about getting you to move in there any way possible, then putting the screws to you once they have you in their grasp! After being a faithful customer for years, I noticed that brand new people right off the street were paying far, far less than I was for exactly the same thing. Now I'm not talking that first month thingie; just regular rates. This is because as soon as you move in, they keep raising and raising and raising the rates nonstop...and if you ask about them doing something to correct this, they basically tell you "they can't do anything about it, it's the computers". I always thought PEOPLE program computers; we're not living in "the Terminator" age yet. And actually, I suspect people moving out HELPS the on site staff...pretty hard to make a bonus on renting units to new customers if you don't have empty ones TO rent, right? Now let me tell you about Amy, smiling-to-your-face Amy Pope, the mgr. I was allowing someone to use part of my unit for free for over a year...finally this person decided to get their own unit, and found a much better deal at another Extra Space location than this almost full one, so she took it....along with the free moving truck that was offered. AMY WENT BALLISTIC! Instead of being HAPPY for our keeping our business with her company, she started shouting and threatening us for my friend moving to another Extra Space location using Extra Space's truck.....go figure??? After encouraging her to fulfill her threat to "call her supervisor, because he'll fix us" she declined...instead choosing to write CRAP on the company computer preventing me from ever using a company truck again....or apparently ever getting a discount of any kind again. I say this because having been approved for a move in discount myself after the necessary number (and more) months away, I was basically told I was blacklisted. Then, I get a call from them saying they HAVE a unit for me......I go down there and it's an 8x13 unit......with HALF THE SPACE GONE DUE TO A SLANTED ROOF! (the assistant manager at this 241 Sunnyoaks location was hopefully having a bad day, btw....but if you go there, just in case; be prepared to have your head bit off) Ok, so believe it or not, I'm NOT done with Extra Space Storage. Nope. Just filed a complaint with the state attorney general alleging a blatant bait-and-switch tactic concerning these slanted roof units, which I found they have LOTS of!!!
