Explorers restaurant on the second floor of the Royal Sonesta at 550 Light St, Baltimore was the setting for another great business lunch! The Caesar salad and Cobb salad were both great.  The service too was excellent.  Petra was awesome!  So friendly, so quick, and very thorough with our order.  We really enjoyed having Petra serve our table. We're incredibly sad to see the Tater Tots leave the menu.  They were just so nostalgic, delicious, and comforting.  The rest of the menu items are great as always for Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner. My husband and I were staying at the Royal Sonesta in Baltimore for our anniversary weekend. Explorer's Restaurant/Lounge is in the hotel on the 2nd floor so on our first night after a couple of hours driving, we decided to make it to the lounge before happy hour ended (it was a Friday/HH ends at 7pm). To start, I got a strawberry mojito which was really good. Tyre the bartender made it with fresh strawberries and mint. My husband got a Stella. We ordered wings and the chorizo flatbread. You can't go wrong with wings so they were good but to our surprise, our favorite was the chorizo flatbread - now this I would order again (even if it's somewhere else lol). We stayed a bit longer and I had 2 Hawaiian Martinis (OMG) and my husband (I think) got Jameson. The martinis were just PERFECT!!! We had a great time meeting new people that sat next to us; from locals to people travelling there for business. If you're in the area or staying at Royal Sonesta, give Tyre a visit. Came for restaurant week after work. Didnt know it was in a hotel- had i known i would jot have gone. Im glad i checked it out. I ordered the crab deviled eggs topped with a generous portion of real crab meat, the shrimp scampi and gouda grits.. super tasty.. grits were a bit grainy but the flavor was soo savory, garlicy, rich. And the shrimp were fresh n cooked perfectly. Had pineapple upside down cake for dessert and it was solid! Id probably return if i were in the area. (2/20/2014) Went for Restaurant Week to try out the Explorers Lounge at the Harbor Court Hotel. The feel is decidedly too rich for your blood. Prices are steep, best come at happy hour for $5 wine/$4 beers/half-off apps. The service seemed overwhelmed by the number of people dining-in, and mentioned that they're not used to being that busy; started off attentive, ended up having to get up and flag someone down at the bar for our desserts and check. Started with a few apps to share: Truffle Fries (earthy, crispy, shoestring white potato); Wild Mushroom Arancini (tart-creamy with goat cheese, savory, deep-fried to a crunchy dark brown); Harbor Court Honey Wings (deep-fried crunchy large wings with a dunk in a slightly spicy sticky sweet and savory sauce, like Korean fried chicken), "the best I've ever had" remarked one of our diners. The Spiced Pear Salad came with a warm savory tart of Saga Blue Cheese frisee, chicory, walnuts, and a sweet-tart red wine vinaigrette, really nice mix of warm fruit and "meaty" cheese with the cool crisp bitter lettuces. Honey Braised Shortribs were meaty and fork-tender, cannellini toothsome and flavorful, soaking up the meat juices. Braised Lamb Shank was a large bone-in portion, savory, herb-scented jus. I personally could've done without the Sweet Potato Gnocchi (but I'm not a gnocchi fan, in general, those gummy dough balls). Desserts were serviceable, very sweet, not much by way of subtle. If you need an after dinner sweet, they fit the bill. We'll be back to get our Out of Africa on with discounted libations and small plates. I came here for the Valentine's Day Dinner. The main course was delicious, but the appetizer was pretty average. I had the Avocado & Arugula Bruschetta as my first course and it was average; it had way too many onions, the bread was chewy, and there was little balsamic on it. For my second course, I had the Grilled Hanger Steak, which was delicious and would recommend. The dessert was great except for the dry chocolate cake. read more

Recently, I had the opportunity to stay at the Royal Sonesta in the Inner Harbor for a staycation. As a Baltimore resident, I was thrilled to be spending the evening overlooking the picturesque harbor. I could not get enough of the beautiful view. I was slightly kicking myself for not taking a sunrise timelapse video. Upon checking in, my girlfriend and I took a quick tour of the lobby and the bar upstairs. We opted to grab a cup of coffee at Formula Espresso (the coffee shop/convenience store in the lobby). They use Illy espresso beans which are some of my favorite. We each ordered latte's and they were delicious. Formula Espresso also has a small wine selection, we picked up a bottle so we could have a drink in our room before dinner while taking in the incredible view. While we were touring the hotel, someone stopped by and dropped off some chocolates which paired perfectly with the bottle of red we picked up and it made for a great pre-dinner snack. The hotel restaurant is called Explorers Lounge and it has a bit of a safari feel to it which matches the global feel of the menu. We started with apps and shared the Thai Chicken Tower which had the most delightful peanut sauce. I'm a sucker for peanut sauce and I couldn't get enough of this dish. We also tried the Sonesta Grilled Beef Turnover which I think was my favorite bite of the evening. The grilled steak was griddled in a tortilla with onions and cheese and served with a creamy, spicy sauce. It was a great way to start the meal. For our entrees, my girlfriend went with the Steak Diane. The grilled sirloin was served with onions and tomatoes over a creamy risotto. This was the ultimate steak dinner and she loved every bite. I ordered the Grilled Crusted Pacific Salmon. The dish was so fresh and light and I was crazy about the citrus butter sauce. Another great dish. After dinner, we enjoyed some of the chocolates that the hotel sent over and the bottle of wine we picked up. We also filled out the room service breakfast card because there truly is nothing better than breakfast in bed. I did make it a point to wake up early to catch the sunrise over the harbor which was truly stunning. When breakfast came, it was a delicious spread of all of our breakfast favorites. We decided to share a little bit of everything. It was all delicious but the French Toast really satisfied my sweet tooth. After breakfast, unfortunately it was time to check out. I'm already planning my next trip back to soak in the beautiful views and sample more of their delicious food. read more

My uncle was staying at the hotel and we met him here for a brunch. I ordered blueberry pancakes and they were really good. Crispy, fluffy, yet the blueberry Weren't soggy. The coffee was fresh and had a nice strong flavor. Eggs were good but not outstanding. All and all the food was good and it was a nice environment for a relaxing breakfast. The decor is fun and makes you feel like you've stepped a bit back in time to some sort of old hotel. The service was a bit lacking. The staff, while nice enough, weren't exactly running to take anyone's order or make sure you needs were met. If your in the hotel and don't want to leave it's a convenient and solid choice for a nice meal. read more

Food was good, however, what is on this menu is NOT what is on their menu. The only thing on this menu that is the same is the Rockport fish and crab cakes, but there is a variation of that too. The pork chop is for room service only and the rib eye is a strip. Also, the waitress tried to charge me $21 for the "Apple Crisp" cocktail when it clearly says $12 on the menu. Said the price on the menu did not include adding the vodka. WHAT? I don't think so. Braised chicken is delicious along with the fingerling potatoes. Table next to me had their cupcakes removed from their bill because they were dry. I'm not sure I would choose to come here again, especially if I was looking for the "perfect" evening. read more

Stopped in for dinner after checking in to the hotel. My friend ordered the Rueben Sandwich and a Salad. Her comments were the sandwich was good. It was a traditional Rueben and the meat was tender and lean. The House Salad was fresh and offered a nice variety of Fresh Vegetables. I chose a Short Rib Burger which was prepared perfectly for me. There was a special aioli for the Burger and it was very good. The Fries were better than average and I couldn't be more pleased with the food. The service on the other hand was far from good. I I agree with Cara about the wait time. We thought for sure our waitress was cooking the food as well as serving. It took a long time to place our order; a long wait to get our food and an even longer time to get our check. We began to imagine what the waitress was doing in the kitchen besides cooking the food. Finally, the place was freezing. We were shivering in the almost empty restaurant and it ruin the entire experience. In the Service Industry- good service is important. After all, I could have gotten a cheeseburger from a drive thru for $2 but I was willing to pay more because I expected better service. read more

Take a culinary tour of globally inspired bar food with African merguez sausage, Caribean conch fritters, Venezuelan arepas, Asian satay, and default to solid Merlin crab cakes. $13 buys you 1/2 dozen local oysters, a glass of champagne, and a charitable donation to the Chesapeake oyster restoration project. The Harbor Court is the best hotel in the city, has valet parking, and this is the most sophisticated hotel bar in Baltimore. We stayed at the Royal Sonesta on a business trip. We'd been going out to local places for breakfast but one day it rained torrentially so we decided to stay in and just have breakfast at the hotel at Explorers, on the 2nd Fl. According to the front desk they don't always have a breakfast buffet but they do have ala carte. My husband is a big fan of breakfast buffets (and we've been to very good ones at other hotel restaurants) so we went with that option. It was a bad move. I felt like I was getting the type of mediocre free breakfast buffet you'd normally get at a Hampton Inn except I paid $25pp for it. The French toast was chewy, the potatoes were soft and bland. The eggs, bacon, sausage were just ok. So if you're coming here for breakfast, I'd probably go for ala carte. At least it'll be fresh and cheaper. read more

Had Thanksgiving dinner here. They offered a set menu with good vegetarian options. It was pricey at $42 but the food was very good. The portions were just right too. Some places offer vegetable dishes and you get something that isn't seasoned well or with barely cooked vegetables. Not the case here. Everything was flavorful and done well. read more

Last night I tried their Restaurant Week - 3 Course Dinner special. And my experience was just ok. I really wasn't wild. My first course was the Crab and Corn Chowder. It was delicious. Nicely seasoned with lump crab meat. My second course was the Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli. In my opinion it was just ok. Nothing to brag about. Then I ordered the Apple Gaulette for my dessert. Extremely disappointed. The gaulette was frozen as if it came right out of the freezer. My spoon couldn't penetrate it. I bring this to my waiters attention. He was new and took it to a seasonal waiter to confirm how the dessert was supposed to be served. Our waiter returns and says it's supposed to be served cold I say maybe cold but not frozen. I then decided to go with the pumpkin cheesecake which was just ok. My 2 drinks were good. It also took awhile for food and drinks to be served. I don't think I'll be back. read more

It's been awhile since we visited the Explorer's Lounge located in the Royal Sonesta Harbor Court Hotel. The new décor is very inviting and cozy. We were able to enjoy a very peaceful and quiet dinner with a good friend. The burgers were really good - prepared the way we like them. The Taharka Brothers Vanilla and Chocolate Ice Cream were a delicious finish to our meals. Our server was off her game; however, seemed not to be in the moment. Enjoyed breakfast at Explorer's during my stay at the Royal Sonesta. My suite package included a daily breakfast credit and the restaurant was included. The breakfast was freshly made, hot and delicious. I enjoyed the fluffy pancakes, applewood smoked bacon, fresh fruit and apple juice. The portions are huge. Surely enough for two people to share. The staff was friendly and accommodating when I asked for what's normally a sit diem restaurant to prepare my order to go. I truly appreciated that! The views of the Inner Harbor and hotel courtyard are lovely should you decide to dine in. The decor is tastefully done as well. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Went here to try something a little different. Won't be going back, that's for sure...my friend and I ordered the French 75, a pretty classic cocktail. Explorers makes theirs with cognac. Different but figured it's worth a try. Yuck! I was so wrong! Basically just drank syrupy cognac with some orange flavoring. I sent it back for a cocktail similar to a cosmo. That was much better but not worth the $13! We ordered a small appetizer which was okay, nothing special. The problem was that was of our plates was covered in old dried food. It didn't help that the service took forever despite not being very busy. read more

I guess they call it explorers because you're in the wild- no one has manners, bugs everywhere, moldy fruit! This is on the second floor of the Royal Sonesta and what an ill fitting name that is! As soon as you step off the elevator you are hot with a putrid perfumed chemical smell like the powder stuff janitors use at schools to clean up puke. Came here for breakfast with my family of four, there were two families in front of us and we waited 25 minutes before we were even acknowledged- and that was only because I walked over to a gentleman and asked if we could just sit at the bar or if I could get a cup of coffee while we waited- the expression on his face was one of disgust like how dare I ask ! He was incredibly rude, told me the severs were seating people and I said no one has even looked our way since we've been standing. He walked away from me after that! I went to the front desk and was told they were having service issues here and that's the understatement of the year! After 40 mins we were finally seated.. and sadly the horror wasn't even over. We had been sitting for 20 minutes and saw everyone around us getting their order taken (people who had just been seated - after we were and were being waited on immediately) I walked over and demanded they take our order, they finally complied. It was clear the guy taking our order wasn't a server but worked elsewhere in the hotel and was brought up to help. We waited 10 minutes and ended up walking to the bar to get glasses and water since again we were being ignored- a guy walked to us wth a pitcher of water to fill the glasses and only filled 3/4 water glasses. We had to walk up after and fill it ourselves. There was MOLD ON THE BLACKBERRIES. Breakfast was mediocre, service was rude and essentially non existent and three of us got at least one mosquito bite while sitting there (ew, where is there standing water again?!) This was an unacceptable experience. I have no idea why this hotel and restaurant has such high ratings except for the fact that there aren't many hotels here. This was worse than a a shitty motel or even a rest stop! Rude, dismissive, gross,STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE AND DONT EAT HERE!! read more

Just finishing a wonderful dinner at the Explorer's Lounge. To be honest, I'm hotel-bound as I'm staying here for a conference and didn't feel like venturing farther. But what a pleasant surprise! I ordered the beef tenderloin with spinach instead of potatoes. It was done to perfection. Beef tender and tasty - not too much sauce. Spinach perfect - sauteed with garlic and olive oil - probably a bit of butter in there. but not so much that I couldn't overlook it...it was divine. Above and beyond the food - this restaurant has character. Forget the harbor view. It's all well and good, but a major street lies between you and the view. Focus on the interior instead...warm oriental rugs cover the dark marble floor. A floor-to-ceiling bookcase lines one wall. On that same side, the dining area, couches are interspersed with tables. It's a cozy feel and the lighting is just right. Curios on tables and bookshelves apparently from far-away places. Rich drapes. Dimmed halogens complemented by table lamps. A not-too-big room...cozy in fact. On the other side of the room, a bar to add some flavor. Service? Fine. Not anything over the top. Attentive, no more. The only drawback? The music. For instance, Fatboy Slim's Rockerfella Skank is playing now. "Wha?" you say? Exactly. But that was a bit of an anomaly. Now we're on to a smoother jazz vibe. I'm sure if the music strayed while you were here you could set them back on track with a word to the staff. I'd come here again, even if I wasn't staying at the hotel. And probably again. This place was not what I expected. When I looked up the menus for Baltimore Restaurant Week I had put Explorers high on my list! It seems like a nice elevated American Fare menu. We arrived rather late on a Sunday, the dining room was empty and there were a few people at the bar we were seated at on a couch and told to "hold on" by the bartender. Confused we sat on a live seat and chair with a small table (totally not a good place to eat dinner but ok for drinks). When the server came back from the kitchen we were offered seating in the dining room. It was very cold in the restaurant, uncomfortably cold. It was restaurant week but we were not presented the restaurant week menu, so I wen and got it on my own. When I returned the server responded, "oh you want the 35 dollar special if that's what you want that's cool". So odd. I was the only one from my party to order from the Restaurant Week menu. I had the crab deviled eggs they were average, then I had the rock fish with kale and succotash, it was awful! Everything was so salty the fish kale and the succotash (which had pancetta so it was extra salty). The smith island cake I had for dessert was old hard and I could tell it had been refrigerated. The rest of my party mildly enjoyed their food. I won't be returning to Explores intentionally! The servers were cool Of I was looking for new friends. Someone in my party did network a bartender job for another friend, apparently, Explorers is hiring, go figure! read more

While staying at the Royal Sonesta Harbor Court we ate on numerous occasions in the Lounge. Two mornings we ate off the buffet. One morning I chose to eat off menu while my husband ate buffet. The chef was very accommodating since I asked for egg whites for my omelet and add lump crab, mozzarella and mushroom. Wow good! The buffet was nice but did not feel it was worth the $19+. The potatoes were a blend of 4-5 different potatoes. Very tasty. Marion and Cliff were our wait staff and was very accommodating on our various breakfast/afternoon snacks. read more

Not a great experience. It is more expensive than the "$$" rating indicated on Yelp, it is definitely a "$$$" range place, mains on both sides of US$ 30. But the main issue we had was the service. There were two waiting staff (at least one too few for the size of the place), and they did not seem to get along well. The moment we arrived, one of them, a lady, was looking for a table to seat us. The other, a gentleman in a sports jersey, without saying a word, arrogantly pointed his finger at a table. We felt we were not welcomed to take seat, we were ordered to. Since we were hungry and it was late, we decided to let it go but it was definitely not a nice welcome. While we were eating, both staff disappeared for minutes, and at least one other family came, sat in a table and, frustrated, left as there was no-one to serve them. My wife and I ordered beers with our mains, a lager and an IPA, and the server (the guy in the jersey) mixed them up: he gave me my "lager" which I immediately recognized as IPA as I tasted it. The food was OK but we only had flatbread as we didn't feel like shelling for the US$ 30+ dishes as the service was so bad. It's a pity as otherwise we really enjoyed our stay in the Royal Sonesta. read more

A few years ago, the Explorer's Lounge was a funky, intimate lounge with oversized couches and a grand piano playing jazz. It used to be one of my favorite spots to take a group for drinks and dessert. The remodel traded most of the couches for cheap square tables. Looks more like a diner now than a lounge. What a bummer. Last night I went there for a dinner date. I decided to treat myself to their most expensive entree on the menu- the seafood Bouillabaisse. This is usually a spicy fish stew with seafood. What I got was a bowl of three shrimp, three clams, and three mussels. There was a dollop of red sauce poured on it. It was served with a soup spoon and a piece of crusty garlic bread. For $40 (!) I was expecting real Bouillabaisse. I asked my waitress if this was the chef's "take" on the dish, because there was no broth in the stew. She apologized, and admitted that it wasn't supposed to look like that. No biggie, I figure the chef plated the seafood and forgot to pour some broth. After all, it was served with a freakin' soup spoon. She took it back to the kitchen, came back, and this time it had two dollops of red sauce. What a ripoff. At least the three shrimp were cooked well. $40! The staff was wonderful, as always. The ambiance was a glimmer of the hip space it used to be. And for the price of a fillet at Ruth's Chris, I got a sparse bowl of shellfish. I'm sad to say that the Explorer's Lounge of old is long gone. I won't be spending any more money here. If you're staying at the hotel and need a restaurant, it'll do. But for your money I'd take a short walk to Pratt street or Federal Hill. read more

Amazing food, but service not equal to the cuisine. I travel a lot for business, and I really like the ambiance and food at the Explorer's Club. Tonight I had a green salad with green beans, artichoke hearts, and fresh baby carrots, with a warm vinaigrette, followed by a wonderful crab cake (nearly all crab and perfectly cooked), cole slaw that meets my very high Southern belle standard, and pomme frites with thyme. All very tasty! The problem was the lackadaisical service: perpetually empty water glass, no bread offered (although the table next door had a bread basket, and I had a bread plate that was never removed), and thoughtless table service: my empty salad plate was removed, but the small bowl of salad dressing remained until I requested that it and the bread plate be removed. The final joke was that my bill was wrong (in my favor), and the waiter's only comment was "Thank you for being so honest." How about "Can I get you some bread to go?" Lol! I recommend waiter training to go with the excellent food and hotel prices. read more

Pretty awful. Stayed at the hotel as a guest and was looking for a quick dinner this evening. Ordered the salmon, and let's just say I've had better food in my old high school cafeteria (where I once dug into the icy center of a partially defrosted bowl of French fries). The salmon was Small, overcooked, and doused in this sugary syrup that was not a positive addition to the dish. There were a small handful of mushy, tasteless cubes of sweet potato under the salmon. Nothing tasted fresh. It looked and tasted like it had been sitting under a heat lamp the whole day, forgotten until it was ordered at the end of the night by a lonely patron. What was bizarre was the amount of time it took for the food to come out suggested the chef had gone out to his boat, caught the fish, and returned to the kitchen to filet and cook it. When I went to the counter to check out (because the waiters seemed like they were purposely avoiding eye contact making them impossible to flag down), the waiter asked me how the salmon was, to which I responded it was ok, because I didn't have the heart to be honest. He then turned to a man eating a salad at the bar and asked the same question. Seems like the man had the same internal struggle as me, because he responded weakly, "it's ok...it would be nice if there was more salad, I'm wondering where the leaves are." Hoping it was an off night. I will not be back. read more

The Bar is a collection of old World, continental decor, oriental rugs and asian influence - something from all parts of the world. Very inviting/approachable luxury lounge seating and the drink pricing was OK. Wide selection of appetizers and 'small bites'. Let me start by saying that I just had the most lovely valentines day ever. My boyfriend chose this place at random when I gave him the okay to plan our valentines day. We got there and immediately upon walking into the hotel (the restaurant is on the 2nd floor of royal sonesta) we were having doors held for us, nice greetings etc. we got upstairs and the restaurant manager found our reservation right away, grabbed our coats for us and hung them, and seated us even though we were 45 minutes early. The place is so elegant and beautiful. I had the lobster bisque, braised short ribs, and chocolate pyramid. We did the valentines day special. My boyfriend got the salmon, and chambord strawberries. Everything from service, to the feel in the room, to the food was just perfect. I couldn't have asked for a better night. I highly recommend you take your lady here if you want her to feel like a princess because I definitely can't stop smiling. OUTSTANDING! I'd rate ten stars if I could! read more
