Big fan of the Eveready. I would frequent this place especially during my days in college. Since my friends know how much I love the Food Network, they brought me here since... FUN FACT! Guy Fieri featured this place on "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives." Cool right? This place does diner food justice. I've had everything from their burgers to their ice cream sundaes. Classic food with a retro atmosphere. It's definitely a fun place to bring friends or family (good for groups!). A few of us went to the Po-Galleria and to the movies and then here for dinner. Not sure why this place was on the food network, but I don't think it should have. As soon as we walked into the door, the girl behind the counter took her time to acknowledge us. It was really awkward. In any case, dinged a star for that because that should not happen. I feel that this diner is serviced by college/high school students. I know it was a slow night and the New York Knicks was on, but it was really obvious to see some of the workers watching the game for a few minutes when they could have been attending to their customers. Luckily, it didn't affect our service. This is a TRUE diner in the sense that they offer TONS of food, too many choices to select from. We ordered Chopped Steak and Jambalaya Pasta. The chopped steak came out to something we totally didn't expect. I thought when they printed chopped, it meant cubes of steak not ground up NY Sirloin steak. In any case, that would have been fine but we said medium rare and it came out medium well. My fiance didn't really like it at all, instead she liked my Jambalaya Pasta. If you like spicy food, this is the dish. Has a huge kick to it. They give you 4 shrimps and TONS of chicken. I felt like they gave me more chicken than pasta. It was nice that they let me substitute for Angel hair pasta. Another true thing to this diner, we had so much food that we could not finish our meals and had to take it to go. If all diners tasted as scrumptious as the Eveready Diner, then perhaps I would actually not feel like gagging every time the suggestion to go to a diner comes up. We loved this place! We were visiting Hyde Park for the Eleanor Roosevelt sites and this was a delicious addition. Friendly staff, fun, clean interior. I had the meatloaf sandwich - a meal and a half for an unbelievably beautiful price! The kiddos had a BLT and a hot dog - typical diner food and nice-sized portions. Hubby had a burger - the one bite I had of it was fantastic. Yum. The only drawback was the black and white cookie at the end. I don't know if it was authentic as I've only had black and whites outside of NY, but it wasn't fantastic. My mom and I stopped for a burger, deluxe of course, they were delicious!! Cooked perfectly, they came with nicely cooked fries AND onion rings! We really enjoyed them. My friend and I popped in after the movies for dessert. She got a very yummy brownie Sunday & I got the Tiramisu. I have to say I was very disappointed in my dessert. Great 50s vibe. This is one of the nicest diners upstate and in the area. My favorite things to get when I come home are the shakes and breakfast foods such as the omelets or the breakfast platter that comes with pancakes, fruit and sausage/or bacon. Super cute little diner! Whole decor is really retro, give off the classic 80's diner vibes. Service was great, you get greeted by a hostess and seated pretty quickly. The waitress was down to earth. Had the classic French toast and oatmeal and both were great. The French toast came with a strawberry butter which was new to me but super good. Found this place from Diners Drive Ins and Dives. It didn't really live up. The menu was definitely Irish influenced, but a lot of dishes need to be rethought. Too jumbled in my opinion... flavors that don't work together on the same plate. The food is not bad, just needs to be cleaner and simpler. The service was also not the best. There were only 2 waitresses working for the whole place, so things that shouldn't be slow were. For example, it took about 10 minutes to get a refill for my coffee when the pot was literally 15 feet away from where we were sitting. This was because one of them was shmoozing with some customers instead. The chef came out because he forgot bacon and the cheese on one of my dishes, and was very apologetic. +10 points right there. Overall a great experience. My wife and I were in Poughkeepsie to visit the National Park sites in the area, and stopped in after visiting the Roosevelt Home and Presidential Library. It was at the height of lunch, so there was about a ten minute wait to get in, but it was worth it. The food was very good. I had the French Toast and paid the extra $2 for real maple syrup, but the French Toast was some of the best I've ever had. We liked it so much we went back for dinner. Glad we did! They had a Beef Brisket special that I tried, and it was outstanding. My wife had the meat loaf, which she reports was very good, too. Service was very attentive both at lunch and dinner. We drove from Boston to Hudson Valley for leaf peeping. While planning our trip, I noticed this diner on the Internet and knew we needed to stop here. It was worth the drive from Boston just for this amazing diner. Eveready Diner screams classic diner. When we arrived on Saturday afternoon, there was a line out the door. On a hunch I went inside and saw available stools at the diner counter. The hostess gave the nod that there was no waiting for those, so I grabbed my buddy and we plopped right down to watch the action behind the counter and enjoy the buzz of this popular eatery. A young man behind the counter, busily making a strawberry shake, greeted us as he noticed we were already poring over menus, which were handy in stainless menu holders along the formica counter. We were lucky to have had this kid as our waiter. He seemed like he knew what he was doing and was eager to serve us a meal. Even multitasking, he had a calm assuring look on his face. This sort of thing is important. When you know you've got someone sensible serving, you don't worry about things going badly. In the background, beyond the counter, we could see a bustling, open kitchen full of busy cooks. Ah, what a menu. It has everything! (Look it up on the internet.) It didn't take long for us to narrow down our choices. I ordered the Reuben with corned beef (you can also get pastrami). I also ordered a vanilla malt. I can never resist a malt. Diners are one of the few places to get them. My friend ordered the "Diner Benedict" (yes, it's Eggs Benedict) and an order of "Love Me Tenders" (chicken tenders, of course). The milkshake blenders face the counter. They're the classic stainless steel with multiple blending sticks. Tall stainless steel jars are used to blend at high speed for a few minutes. After then filling up a tall milkshake glass, the extra vanilla malt left in the freezing metal jar with condensing water on the outside is served on the side (and filled up my glass a second time! Yay!) My vanilla malt arrived moments after my friend was served his coca cola. I couldn't wait to taste my malt! It was super malty, just the way I love 'em. I went lost in my malt for the few minutes before our food arrived. We shared the generous order of chicken tenders, which were incredible. I've never had them so good. The batter was light and flavorful, and they were juicy and hot. The barbeque dipping sauce was special too. It just smacked of classic barbeque sauce flavor. There was another dipping sauce too. It was a bright mayonnaise type sauce, but I was so taken with the barbeque sauce, I didn't pay much attention to the other. My Reuben sandwich came on toasted marbled rye with lots of lean corned beef and homemade sauerkaut. Delicious, hot, and satisfying. The fries that came with it were perfect too. (Can they do no wrong?) They tasted like twice fried fries because the outside was so light and crispy. The color was very light golden yellow and they were seemingly greaseless. Again, amazing. My sandwich also came with a small side of coleslaw, which was well made, balanced and filled out the meal. This diner food was like best home cooking you've every had, made by a really, really good professional cook. I was satisfied for the rest of the day. My friend's Diner Benedict was excellent too. I was so engaged in my meal, I didn't have the slightest inkling to taste his, but he too was completely satisfied. Before we left, I bought a corn muffin to go. I had been eying them stacked on a big serving plate on the counter and couldn't resist. Later on, back at our hotel, we fought over every bite of that little gem. We had a wonderful visit in Hyde Park, visiting FDR's home, The Walkway over the Hudson, and the Vanderbilt place, but we will be returning, if for nothing else, just to eat at this diner again. I hate giving poor reviews, as evidenced by my stats. I'd rather sing the praises of a place I love than trash a spot I'm not crazy about. But I truly am baffled by all the love Yelpers are showing this place. In my opinion, the food at Eveready has always been decent. Not great, but not disgusting either. But every other aspect of this diner is so below par! Dirty glasses, dried food on the sides of plates, dated interior, brusque waitstaff... I just don't like it. I think a lot of people are attached to this place because they either grew up or went to college in the area, and are influenced by the great times they had here. Which is fine, of course; I had some of the best times of my collegiate life in some pretty crappy places as well. But if you're not emotionally attached to the Eveready in any way, I think you should skip it in favor of one of the other local spots. read more

And the food well that is a hit or miss. Sometimes it's ok and sometimes yuk!! And for the prices the food doesn't match up. Also question why when you order a dish and you ask for gluten free bread I have to pay 1.50 more when they are saving money for not using their bread. I mean if you want to charge more for gluten free bread then minus money for not serving your bread. Dam stop being so grubby for a 1.50 for gluten free bread. Been here several times and love, love, love it! Their breakfast entrees are amazing! The roadside omelet is similar to a Spanish omelet in other diners, but so much better. It has peppers, onions and cheese and there is a home made (I think) salsa sauce on top and a dollop of sour cream. It is served with home fries and toast. I like to order my home fries crispy, because I prefer them crunchy to soggy. The frittered French toast is the best ever! I guess you could have this for dessert, because it's kind of sweet for breakfast, but oh so yummy. You won't be disappointed with some of their dinner entrees either. Meatloaf is one of our faves. And the turkey dinner is quite good as well. The stuffing that comes with the turkey is good, but if I remember correctly, it has raisins in it. The pot roast is good. The short ribs that are listed on the specials are really good, but they usually sell out. All of their breads and desserts are baked on premise. If you get bread for the table, be sure to ask for the strawberry butter!! (And if you get pancakes, they usually give you strawberry butter as well). It's really good! We are big dessert fans, but the banana cream pie and the coconut custard pie are delicious. Also their sundaes are huge and tasty for those liking an after meal sweet spot. read more

The huge statue of the guy inside the diner (I think he's holding a burger) reminds me so much of Big Boy I have to giggle. His presence is so menacing towering over all the diners waiting at the hostess stand like that - many of the patrons likely drunk and/or high college kids doesn't help with the fright factor of him watching over you like he does.
