With about 45 mins till close (3p) I was stressed, trying to examine the menu as quickly as possible. The person I believe to be the owner, suggested their specials. At the top of the specials list was a hoagie with pepper turkey so I pivoted to creating my own Turkey Hoagie on a roll with extra Swiss and the works. The owner obliged and a woman on their staff started on my order. Apple Pay is available although cash is preferred. They have their own parking lot, and plenty of indoor seating. My Hoagie was $13.47, and quite delicious. Next time I'll ask for light mayo, mustard, oil and vinegar. Overall I'm happy to report that even close to closing time On a Roll Deli is serving it up. We love coming to Highland so much. As residents of PK we often frequent activities in Ulster County. Coming over the bridge and heading up 9W, you'll see On a Roll Deli on your left. We first visited here about six years ago for the first time, prior to their renovations. Loved our coffees, egg sandwiches, and lunch wraps. It became a regular stopping point for us on our way into Highland, and also on our way upstate via the thruway. I even stopped here on my way to my bachelor party near Lake George. The guys in our group were pretty amped and rowdy, but after we got out food, we all ate in silence - a sign of great food. The new renovations doubled their size, making social distancing easy. Order by phone and pick up in person. I recommend their wraps but you must try The Roman. Check their Instagram for up to date photos of the daily specials. We saw a photo of their BLT once and made the trek up from the HV Rail Trail just to get it. read more

Not gonna lie, it's a pretty good deli. Boar's Head products, sliced thin, talented sandwich builders, even if the proportions are a little off. Reason for the one star is it's a ripoff. I mean, a blatant ripoff. Several times I've been in there and when the owner charges me he'll just shout a number at me without even touching the register. So last time I got a pound of ham and a half a pound of american cheese. TWENTY BUCKS he says. Seriously? In what world?? Hard to argue when there's no prices listed anywhere in the store. But let's do the math... A pound of ham should be what - 11, 12, 13 dollars? Even if we assume it's 15 dollars? That means american cheese is 10 bucks a pound? Nah, that's my last time in that place. On top of that, owner is rude and likes to act tough and for some reason is "always busy" no matter what you order. Got take-out from On A Roll Deli on Sunday morning. I was not happy with the sandwiches I ordered, which were simply not constructed of quality ingredients. The bread was especially egregious. Quality: Since we were spending the day hiking, figured I would grab some sandwiches for a quick lunch on the way. I was surprised that so many places were closed on Sunday, but eventually found my way to On A Roll Deli. Maybe I made the wrong selections, though that should not be the case when I ordered off the specialty sandwich menu, but the two sandwiches I picked were not very good. I selected the Sicilian Combo with prosciutto, soppresetta, provolone, capicola, and roasted red peppers, and the Chicken Cutlet Delforno with chicken cutline, fontina cheese, capicola, and roasted red peppers. The problems started with the bread, both sandwiches I ordered were on subs. They were dense, dry, and the proportions were all wrong. Honestly, it was hard to tell if the sandwich was any good because eat bite was all bad bread. The Sicilian Combo seemed like a pretty standard sandwich, but could have used some vegetables thrown on, particularly lettuce, tomato, and onion to add some freshness and crunch. And the chicken cutlet on the Chicken Cutlet Delforno, had far too much breading, just intensifying the already bad proportions. Quantity: Large sandwiches, but mostly bread. Value: No prices are listed on the hanging above the counter, but most sandwiches fall between $10 and $14. Ambiance: On A Roll Deli is located in the small Upstate New York town of Highland, not far from Poughkeepsie. It is a massive sandwich shop, unnecessarily big in my opinion. They three tables outside, then a massive indoor space, which had just a few more tables. They then have a counter with a visible prep area, and a kitchen in the back. It was not a natural space, with the amount of fridges along the left wall laughable. I assume it was a gutted convenience store, and they haven't figured out how to use the space yet. Crowd: Just one other person grabbing a breakfast sandwich and coffee. Service: The guys behind the counter were fairly quick putting together my sandwiches. We stopped there for a sandwich on Saturday afternoon. Lots of choices, so it was hard to decide. We finally decided on the smoked turkey caprese - and it was delicious! The only thing I wasn't thrilled with was the fact that the sub roll had sesame seeds. I am not a fan of sesame seeds on my bread. I was having some friends over for a luncheon when I lived in Highland. One of my guests managed a five star Italian restaurant in Westchester County and knew exceptional products from mediocre ones. I wanted to get some Italian deli for cold appetizers, so I ordered some prosciutto (lean and flavorful), parmigiano reggiano cheese (nutty and crumbly, as it should be), roasted red peppers (done perfectly) and mushrooms stuffed with gorgonzola cheese (to die for). I also took home some mozzarella cheese for a caprese salad, with tomatoes, fresh basil, oregano and balsamic vinegar. Everything was outstanding, but the best reaction I could have imagined came from my restauranteur guest, who stated that it was among the best Italian deli she had ever tasted!! Had time to kill spent driving around the area and was driving around aimlessly looking for a place to grab a bite to eat. Seeing the "On A Roll" sign, I made the U-turn and stopped in. It turned out to be a great decision. This is a WORLD CLASS sandwich shop... and I'm a sandwich connoisseur. This place is a real hidden gem for you folks in Highland. If I lived across the river, I'd buy the toll pass just to get across the Hudson as often as possible to eat here. The staff seemed to know everyone that hit the door... and treated me like a regular even though I was 1,200 miles from home. The sandwich specials looked great, as did the deli counter. If I was staying in town longer, I'd have bought some stuff from the deli counter to take with me. As I was just in for lunch, I had one of their special combos. I actually can't even recall what was in it - but it was spectacular. Great ingredients - the bread and meat were terrific - and a great little setting to down the sammy while chatting with the employees. Just moved into town, and after driving past this place countless times, decided to stop by and give it a try. It's a pretty old-school Italian deli, where the scent of cheese and cured meats is the first thing that hits you upon entry. They have a variety of classic sandwich combinations, as well as a rotating cast of deli specials. I tried the italian combo, which has thin sliced Cappy ham, soppresata, pepperoni and provolone. Dee-lish. The interior is standard, just your classic deli set-up with a few tables, a cooler case full of beverages, and a rack of chips. What a pleasant surprise driving through town on 9N! We are healthy eaters and explained what we wooden wooden wine on an egg plant wrap and a tuna fish wrap and the honor roll deli folks were fantastic! I've been to this deli several times. Every time, the service is inattentive, sloppy, or outright rude. They make good sandwiches but they don't have a clue about customer service. I went by there about 1/2 hour to closing one evening after a long drive. They were preparing to paint after closing. They refused to serve me although they could have and they could have waited another 1/2 hour to get started as well.
