a loaf of bread on a cutting board
    Chloë E.

I've only sampled the Georgian baguette from European Bakery and I pick it up at my local Buy Low--one of a couple dozen distribution locations around the Lower Mainland. It's hands-down the best bread in Vancouver. That's right, yelpers, I'm throwing down the gauntlet to be proven wrong (or right). The Georgian baguette looks a little funny (see picture) in that it looks like bread that failed to rise. But the unique shape actually is intended to resemble a boat, from what I can gather. The odd shape ties into the larger myth of the bread hailing from Georgia--where Jason and the Argonauts supposedly sought the golden fleece. Both the white and whole wheat baguettes use organic flour and are delicious with a smear of butter. What's even more amazing is the baguette has only four ingredients: flour, lemon juice, salt, and fresh yeast. The baguettes, like all fresh bread, are best eaten the same day. So don't feel bad about being a glutton when it comes to these carbs.

I support local businesses in my neighbourhood so I decided to stop in here for the first time a little while ago. I picked up a loaf of organic 100% rye bread and a piece of poppy seed cake. The bread was really dense but tasty enough. I was surprised to read on the packaging that it only has four ingredients (organic dark rye flour, bacterial culture, water, and salt). When is the last time you picked up a loaf of bread that only contained four ingredients and lists the first ingredient as organic? Pretty hard to come by I'd say, short of doing all your shopping at Whole Foods (and even then it's not a guarantee). *Note to celiacs or those with gluten sensitivity*: Rye is not a gluten-free grain, so therefore, any food containing rye as an ingredient is definitely not safe for celiacs. They do carry some gluten-free items though. The poppy seed cake was definitely not what I was expecting and was really dry and tasteless. I'm not really sure how poppy seed cake is supposed to taste, but it definitely wasn't something I'd order again. I've noticed they have poppy seed filling at Famous Foods so I might try making it myself to compare. Service is a little lacking, but really I was just there to buy bread. I will keep coming back to try other items.

European bakes a lot of varieties of breads at this location, some of which can be considered gluten free. I finally got in there to see what else they might have on offer yesterday. There are a lot of quite dense bread varieties to choose from. Seriously, this is heavy bread that could be used as a weapon. We grabbed a rice bread so I wouldn't be deprived at lunch while everyone else was consuming their Solly's bagels. I guess I'd eat smoked salmon off of just about anything gluten free but the rice bread is probably a good safe bet. What can I say but it's rice bread. Tastes sort of like stale rye, with out the rye flavour. Would I buy it again? Only if you're buying the smoked salmon. ;)

They have fresh baguettes daily. Be sure to come in the morning because they run out by the afternoon.

Pasta perfectly al dente, fresh and flavourful sauce.....wonderful. This is a limited menu eatery, and that's not a bad thing at all--it shows a commitment to not only getting it right, but getting it perfect. A great little local grocer and casual restaurant, Mercato Di Luigi is well worth seeking out. Parking is somewhat limited, since it is located on East 12th, but if you can arrive on foot, all the better. A solid five stars. A simple bowl of perfect pasta just made my day.

It's so cute and quaint, fits maybe 8-10 people, so perfect for a little lunch date or girlfriend chat fest. We ordered lattes ($5), which were delicious, not too milky, definitely good strong espresso. We shared the daily special which was cream asparagus pasta and a mortadella sandwich. Perfect amount for two people. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and tasted so fresh, it had plenty of fresh cheese on top. I found it was a little salty, and a bit dry, but it was still delicious ($21). I will try another pasta next time. The mortadella sandwich ($13) we asked for grilled and it was sooo good. The fresh made foccacia was amazing. It had plenty of mayo and arugula which paired perfectly with the creamy mortadella. They sell plenty of fresh pasta sauces like bolognese, cacio Pepe, truffle cream sauce, along with fresh pasta including gluten free fresh pasta We loved our time here and we will be back!

My friend finally suggested it to me and after having lunch in the area I was able to pass by. I am a sucker for all things pandan so it wasn't hard to make a choice (although the ube latte also spoke loud to me...). It was a good choice, the latte was not too sweet but the flavours just mixed so well together. The workers were helpful in helping my friend decide on what to order. She got the ube latte which I also tried and thought it was delicious as well! The little shop is a order at the counter type situation and there is minimal seating inside. The seating was reminiscent of those little Vietnamese market stalls where you sit around on stools with boxed crates as your table. I'd love to pass by this spot again and give it another try!

Just like in the movies, this coffee shop is tucked away in a quiet, peaceful neighborhood. I also had a lavender Matcha, which was super tasty with beautiful latte art on top. The tomato confit and cheese crêpe was delicious as was my pain au chocolat which is my benchmark for how good the pastries are everywhere I go! Really flaky, buttery, but not dripping in butter, with melted chocolate because they keep them in the warmer. This is a order at cashier spot with no table service so they meet my simple expectations for their service with decent politeness, accuracy and efficiency. Plus i find it convenient that they open as early as 7am. Some of my usual purchases here are the matcha drinks, chocolate croissants and earl grey muffins. I give 5 stars to their matcha and I recommend trying their sipping matcha drink if you are a matcha lover like me. They are quite spacious and you can work on your laptop here but it can get busy. It's not my first choice as study/work cafe because I prefer cafes with quiet corners with outlets or relaxing soft music and I find this spot has more of a hipster ambiance and is more ideal as a chill place for hanging out. Hmm, maybe come here to reply work emails but why overwork here when its vibes are set for unwinding ;-) There are side street parking available -- being able to park close by is a plus. Cafes in location with free parking options are the best, so you can buy items to go or you can choose to stay and relax, without the hassles of metered parking expiring and getting parking tickets. I actually did some digging and self reflection before writing this as this was some weeks back that I tried to sit with my initials reaction. Popped in around 3pm on a weekday as I was in the area to pick up an americano and some pastries. The 5 minutes that I was around the counter and the interaction between myself and staff (one barista and one cashier) was odd. I made myself sit in a corner to sit with my own feelings post interaction. I'm not going to spend more time ruminating that encounter in detail. However, if one googles the signs and ideology of what a hipster is. I've received pure negative stereotype of a hipster. I found the cashier to me cold and smidge condescending, the barista didn't even acknowledge me, ignored my question and is clearly not deaf or blind when he was calling other patrons drink orders out. This poor Canadian even muttered an accidental thank you when I picked up my drink out of habit. That last one is one me. My 1st world problem of "to be me and be kind to others or straight out be reactionary when put in such situation is going to have me ready for my next battle with a passive aggrissive hipster at their work. ding ding let the battle commence.
