We ate here for our 30th anniversary a couple weeks ago. the setting is 5 stars, amazing views of the valley & waters in the distance. the service however was painfully slow. we were there fairly early, definitely before any kind of dinner rush, and they were not busy at all, so no excuse for the slow service. the couple at the table next to us (who had reservations & looked to be rather well healed) were complaining that it took over an hour for their appetizers to arrive after ordering. ours wasn't quite that slow, but for the high prices I would expect faster & more attentive wait staff. the food was good, I had the seafood spaghetti. can't remember what my wife had so it must not have been remarkable. I do remember that her glass of white wine cost $30 & her dinner was less. A very nice place to visit for the views, but the slow service is what I remember most unfortunately. read more

What a gem. Our party of 5 made last minute reservations and they were VERY accommodating. Top notch service which was consistent through the meal and with our 2 kids in tow. The food here was outstanding. Honestly, my expectations were low, but that's 100% on me and it was wonderful to be surprised. Definitely a romantic spot just a short highway drive away from Victoria, but I came for my bachelorette brunch with the girls! We were kindly seated right by a window overlooking the beautiful lake below after having made a reservation. The breakfast was absolutely delicious and the views spectacular. You feel spoiled eating here. I swapped out the meat in my parma style eggs benedict as the prosciutto cotto was not the prosciutto I thought it would be with no issue - so got delicious crispy bacon. While the views at this restaurant are absolutely breathtaking, the service is some of the worst I've ever experienced. We ordered pasta and scallops, but waited almost two hours for the food to come to our table. No explanation, no apology, and while the food was decent, it wasn't anything to write home about. There were also hornets buzzing around the outside table, which created a tense atmosphere to say the least. I left feeling very disappointed. If you're interested in the view, I would recommend just coming for drinks. Against my better judgment, and because my partner is a serial optimist, we came back for breakfast before checking out of the hotel. I tried to clear my mind of the prior experience and do my best to just enjoy the morning. While my iced coffee arrived quickly, it would be more appropriate to call it coffee-flavored water. The nail in the coffin, which I just had to take a picture of because of how much it surprised me, was the bugs and mold on the fruit. Unbelievable. Would give zero stars if I could. read more

CLASSY! Menu and drinks were fast but waited a long time for meal. Not a problem given the fabulous view and ambience. Unfortunately, when my jagerschnitzel arrived , it was cold, which was a shame because it was potentially very tasty. When asked, I mentioned this to our waitress and she offered to take it back. I thanked her for the offer but didn't want to wait any longer to begin eating. We enjoyed the meal although it could have been so much better if properly heated. At the end, when I asked for our bill, she said that both of our meals were on the house, with their apologies. Now that is CLASSY! We will be back soon. read more

We sat right next the window where we could see the water in the valley. The view was breathtaking and I could not stop looking outside while I was eating there. We ordered seared scallops and braised short rib for dinner. We enjoyed both of them, but what really stood out was bread! It looked a bit burnt outside, but the slight burnt gave deep flavor and both my husband and I loved it so much :) I cannot wait to go back there for another anniversary and try other food. Absolutely stunning view to go along with some of the most impressive tastes I have experienced. The beet salad was bright and full of flavour, also great size to share. The jagerschnitzel was lightly breaded, huge and very flavourful. The accompanying spaetzle was perfectly prepared. The mushroom ravioli is something special. From the ravioli itself to the sauce, it was perfect in every way! The service from Hannah was exceptional. As we were staying at the hotel, Villa Eiyre, we enjoyed a couple of great evenings at this restaurant. Both nights, the seating and epic views of the water and other islands were a highlight for us and complimented the caring staff and excellent food prep and presentation. You may know this restaurant by the name Summit. It is located inside of the Eyrie resort. The restaurant name was changed to Alpina, two months ago. The new chef is from Germany. From the moment we entered the resort every person we encountered was cheerful and inviting. There are so many vantage points where you look down across the valley to Washington state. When we were seated at our table it truly was breathtaking. We immediately had to take a selfie with the background and had two different people on the wait staff rush to take our photographs. In fact we saw a lot of this going on with numerous tables. There's a sense of privacy because of the way the restaurant has been laid out and they spread people throughout the restaurant so you really don't feel like there's a lot of people there when there actually is. This restaurant is a best kept secret. The bread plate was irresistible. One of the breads had a lemon flavor to it with the most intense yellow color, it was amazing. Couldn't stop eating the breadsticks either. Mind you, I normally don't eat any bread. The herb butter didn't hurt either. The tuna appetizer with the incredible intense lemon sauce certainly prepared my palate for what was to follow. The Spring Pea Cream Soup with crab ravioli, peas, pea shoots,and salmon roe popping in your mouth was a refreshing surprise. We also enjoyed the 4 hour slow braised short ribs atop creamy Parmesan polenta. Try the honey-crusted duck breast with wilted Swiss chard, rhubarb, schupfnudeln, rhubarb gel and aged balsamic jus. I've got say we were very underwhelmed today. I took a visitor for the view which is always spectacular. Lunch was very mediocre. the burger, which sounds extraordinary by the menu description was overcooked, under seasoned and my 90 mother said it reminded her of McDonald's. Caesar salad had almost no dressing and we had to ask for more which is never the same as when it's tossed with an adequate amount. Croutons were so hard I could barely bite them. Service was sparse. We had to ask for more water when our glasses were empty. For a "luxury hotel" it was a poor example. I assume dinner is better but lunch was a feeble offering. I have been other times when it was better. Not today. Disappointing to say the least. And a default tip option starting at 20% on an already over priced burger. read more

My wife and I were visiting Victoria and Vancouver Island for our fourth anniversary. We chose to have dinner at Villa Eyre's Alpina restaurant, with a seat located right by the water. The view was breathtaking! It was a delicacy in itself! And our waiter was extremely friendly. They even let us bring our own wine, with a corkage fee of 30 dollars. We enjoyed the open-faced seafood lasagna, along with the honey crusted duck. The seafood in the lasagna tasted like it was fresh out of the Pacific ocean. What truly stood out was the desert. It was the smore's desert, and felt like an experience in itself! It was like camping at a fine dining restaurant! We went to the Alpina restaurant at the Villa Eyrie resort last year and were impressed with the quality of the food, the fantastic view and the service. We didn't mind paying the high prices on the menu because the food was definitely worth it. My wife had the burger and kept saying she had never had such a good one. I had a soup that was exquisite. We went back there for lunch yesterday, June 23rd for my birthday. The service was excellent but the food was a disappointment. Obviously a different chef than on our previous time. I took what was written in the menu as "braised pork tenderloin in a white wine mushroom sauce". I was expecting tender morsels of meat infused with the taste of the wine sauce. The mushrooms and the sauce were heavenly but the pork bites were hard, bland with none of the flavor of the sauce. It was served with a roesti, a glorified hash brown patty. The addition of some other veggies would have improved the dish. My wife chose to have the same burger as before but this also was below her expectations. Again the sauce was very good but the burger itself was just ok, no more. It was served with a side salad consisting in a few green leaves with a few drops of balsamic vinegar on top. We mentioned the chewiness and blandness of the pork (surprising for braised meat) to our server. She came back from the kitchen to explain that this dish is usually done in a frying pan and that the "braised" mention was an error in the menu which to our mind is misleading. Even if not braised, a chef should be able to cook pork so that it remains tender. We were also looking forward to one of their most mouth watering dessert pictured prominently on their website, the "pistachio and date mille-feuille" but were told that it had been taken off the menu. In short: the service is excellent, the view is probably one of the best on the island but the food was disappointing. The quality of the food has changed a lot but not the high prices. They seem to be surfing on their previous reputation as the best restaurant on the island. We won't be going back. read more
