We asked where the second was and had to wait for it. Lost in translation, I guess. The chorizo prawn dish had a great sauce, I'll give it that. The prawns were small pieces more shrimp than prawn and the chorizo was not chunks cut from a sausage but simply small slivers cut from a few slices of commercial sliced chorizo meant for sandwiches. We had dinner here the evening the political depart was on tv prior to the BC election. It was a cold rainy evening and there was only 1 other table of customers while we were there. It is a shame because this restaurant is note worthy. The restaurant is in a mall and the ambiance is very nice. It is clean and very comfortable. We shared an order of calamari to start. It was very good. For entrees my husband had the boneless chicken with fries. He received 2 perfectly cooked large pieces of chicken with fries. I ordered the king salmon with gnocchi and a maple soy glaze. It was perfectly cooked and the gnocchi was a nice complement to the fish. We shared a bistro bar for dessert. Prices are fair for the quality of food. The service was also very good. Wine prices are reasonable. We would return if we return to Victoria. read more

Service was poor and waitress was rude. The seafood crepe was thick and doughy. There was very little seafood and there were a lot of bones from the salmon, actually more bones than salmon. Yuck. Tip: A great spot to grab breakfast or lunch when travelling between downtown Victoria and the Ferry terminal. Came here for lunch recently on a Thursday in a group of 5. Located inside a plaza north of downtown Victoria, there were plenty of parking available. The restaurant itself was modern, spacious, clean and inviting. It had plenty of patio space as well, and patrons were definitely taking advantage on a nice, sunny day when we visited. Menu for lunch included a large selection of breakfast options that are available until 2 pm - great for breakfast lovers. The lunch options were soup and salad, pasta, fish and chips, and various sandwiches and burgers. There was also a separately appetizer menu with offerings like calamari and mussels for sharing. I opted for the Habanero Chicken Burger ($18) and substituted fries for Caeser salad (+$2.50). All 5 entrees arrived together relatively quickly after ordering. My burger was very well-constructed and tasted great! Chicken breast was moist and juicy. The jalapeno aioli and habanero sauce added extra kick and flavor without overpowering other components. Extra special were the crispy onions that were perfectly fried and seasoned, which added crunch and texture to each bite. Brioche bun was fresh, buttery and soft. One of the better burgers I have had in a long time! Also quite enjoyed the Caeser salad, of which the dressing was made properly with anchovies. Next time I will order with less dressing. Rest of group was also raving about their food. Service was friendly and attentive. Water was always topped up and our smiling waitress checked in whenever appropriate. Didn't feel rushed or over/understaffed. Overall, had a terrific experience at Artisan Bistro from start to finish. They offer a thoughtful menu that is executed with care. Decor and service are on point. Can't wait to try dinner here on my next visit to Victoria. read more

Love this place. Discovered it last year and have been back several times since for breakfast and lunch. The atmosphere is understated and very pleasant. The service is attentive but unobtrusive. This restaurant is absolutely fantastic! When we first arrived to this restaurant I was slightly hesitant as the location is in a rather informal shopping center. However, the food is absolutely fantastic and speaks for itself! Our hostess and server were extremely sweet and the service was very quick. We just spent two weeks in Seattle and Victoria going to a multitude of very nice restaurants, and this one stood out by far! Portions are generous, and the final bill was lower than I anticipated! We've been here three times now and each visit seems to be worse than the last. The most recent encounter cost us $120 and we were served canned tomatoes, frozen (not fresh) meat and day old bread. Surprisingly good Brunch find on our return trip back to the mainland by ferry. I had the Classic Benny and the wife had the Heuvos Rancheros. Food was excellent (homemade jams and ketchup even) and fast. Looks like a new restaurant located in a strip mall. If you have a trip to the ferry terminal, you can do yourself a favour and grab a bite here instead of in town or on the ferry. The location takes you out of city traffic so you can enjoy a nice meal without worrying about making it to the ferry on time and the food is way better than what they serve on the big water bus! Looking forward to trying them out for other meals while on the island. read more

He even brought some yummy bread to our table so we could dab up the remainder of the tasty sauce. I wouldn't have minded except there was a booth available and saved for 3 people who eventually showed up later. we were seated at a table in the doorway and the couple behind us who hadn't waited were given a window table and served before us. I was excited that a breakfast place was opening in my neighbourhood so I went with two friends to try it out. I am vegetarian and found the menu to be quite meat centered and chose the traditional breakfast because all of the eggs benny had a lot of meat. My eggs were poached perfectly and I got some fruit in place of the meat. The hash browns were a pretty skimpy portion and not very good; they tasted like processed potatoes, not fresh. With a name like Artisan, I expected some serious artisan, homemade style bread. Instead the bread was thin and light and had not much to it. The bread is probably my biggest complaint. I've lived in Victoria for 13 years, a transplant from Ottawa. I've always found that while Victoria has great burger joints and breakfast restaurants, we really lack in having a variety of foodie-style food. That's why I'm so glad we found the Artisan Bistro. To be honest, I may not have known about it if it wasn't next door... we just went in to try it out and were so blown away I just had to write a review. The stuff is prepared by a real chef, actually blending surprising ingredients together. The features change frequently and they even do wine flights... and help you to pair your drink with your food. It's clear from the moment you look at the menu that this isn't a typical Victoria diner or food joint - these people care about what they are putting on your table. I've gone about five or six times now and every single time I tried something new. Every single time I was like, "WOW! That was one of the best meals I've ever had in Victoria." And every time I go in it seems word has gotten out because they are getting packed!! Something tells me we'll see this restaurant featured on foodie shows on the Food Network and dining blogs. Must have been an off night, given the other reviews, because my friend and I were not impressed. Only one waitperson for the entire place. He was literally running to keep up. My friend ordered the baby romaine salad, minus the bacon but with grilled salmon. What arrived was a small platter of young but wilted romaine tossed with shaved pecorino, dressing, and a lemon wedge. No salmon. Our waiter forgot -- fair enough as he was extremely busy -- but $17?? Grossly overpriced for what it was. I had the pan-fried gnocchi. It was okay, but over-fried. If there were wild mushrooms and house ricotta in the dish, they had been cooked beyond recognition. A lighter hand and maybe a toss with some cream sauce or sage would have brought out the flavours of the ingredients rather than killing them. Our waiter did offer us dessert to make up for the lack of salmon, but we weren't interested in trying anything more. He didn't adjust the bill for the $17 salad, but instead argued that the ingredients were expensive. Given the prices, my friend and I agreed it wouldn't be worth returning. read more
