We enjoyed a lovely evening at Boom & Batten on Mother's Day. The restaurant is by the water. Some parking is close by. There was only indoor dining available as outside was still chilly and windy. Our server, Johanna, was very nice and attentive. We liked her. We started off our meal with the Thai curry mussels. Very flavorful and tasty. Highly recommend. For the main course, we ordered the sablefish. The sablefish dish unfortunately turned out to be very bland. Could have had more flavor added to the dish. Suggest eliminating the white cream sauce as it adds nothing to the dish. More substantial portions of bok choy and potato puree would have been appreciated. We were disappointed also that the sablefish itself was cool. Wasn't hot. We requested the dish be served hot. The restaurant nicely accommodated our request by remaking the sablefish dish, for which we are very appreciative the restaurant did that for us. We finished off our meal by sharing a chocolate mousse verrine for dessert. All very nice. And the cappuccino at the end of our meal was one of the best cappuccinos we've ever had. We initially just sat at the cafe for coffee, but when we saw the food coming out, we decided to make a reservation for lunch. This place feels upscale and is nicely decorated. Our lunch was delicious, and we tried the spicy Chicken Sandwich and a seasonal cocktail. The Sandy might have been one of the sandwiches, cooked to perfection and served on, and it was a nice brioche bun. And the view! Wow! What a great way to end our wonderful trip. read more

We came on a Friday for happy hour. We ordered the mai Tai and it was okay. A little too sweet and didn't have enough pineapple in it. The smoky pepperoni pizza and Margherita pizza were disappointing. The pizza wasn't chewy enough and not crispy enough on the outside. The pepperoni had lots of pepperoni on it. Wouldn't order these again The prawn + pesto pizette was much better. It felt like the dough was almost fried. The flavour was much better The tuna tataki was disappointing. Stopped by mid week for Happy Hour. Boom + Batten sits on piers over the water with amazing views across the inner harbour. The interior is very modern with plenty of natural light...loved the room and the ambiance. The Happy Hour menu has plenty of options for food and drink. I opted for a glass of the Mission Hill Cab/Merlot, the tuna tataki and the prawn/pesto pizza. The presentation of the tataki and pizza were both great as was the taste. But there were only 3 very small pieces of tuna on the tataki plate and the pizza was quite small given the price. We were disappointed in this place. We chose it for my birthday celebration (which was not even acknowledged) while we were in Victoria for the weekend. The ambience is very nice. The food was not good. I ordered my steak rare. It was served to me well done on a massive plate of French fries. As I cut into it, the fries spilled off the plate because it was a ridiculously heaping portion. My fiancé ordered the salmon which was overcooked and dry and ate alone as I waited for my new steak. It still came back around medium. At this point I had lost my appetite. The quality of the beef was extremely cheap. We also started with the tuna tartare which was disgusting. You couldn't see or taste any fish because it was all aioli. It was not edible. Our waitress could care less that we didn't care for our food. We spent quite a bit of money here too as we also ordered champagne and a bottle of red wine. It would have been nice to have my entry comped for the inconvenience of having to eat separately or at least a complimentary dessert but absolutely nothing was done. The elk carpaccio ($17) is a lighter choice with paper thin slices of lean meat (don't worry, it's not gamey) that's topped with black garlic aioli, puffed rice, and what seems like a lot of mustard seed but works. Eat the carpaccio on its own or on top of the lavash crackers, both create a great snack. The meatballs ($16) and spicy clams ($16) both incorporated a lovely sauce that had us reaching for the grilled sourdough to sop up. While the pork and beef meatballs were large, they broke apart easily and were wonderfully tender and delicate. I thoroughly enjoyed the smoked tomato butter and romesco sauce that covered the spicy clams but found that they could up the chili peppers as its heat just began to tickle the tongue. It wouldn't be a B.C. resto bar without pizza; Boom & Batten showcases their pizza oven prominently at the front of the restaurant where we watched the chef prepare pie after pie as we waited for our reserved table. The show enticed me to try the prosciutto pizza ($23), which oddly uses a cream sauce as its base yet, when combined with roasted pear and truffle honey creates a sweet and sticky element against the cured ham and peppery arugula. This pizza is made for sharing as it's also fairly heavy. Of course, trendy restaurants also need to feature local ingredients and the wild sockeye salmon ($36) was a good dish. While the fish appeared to be overdone upon arrival, it was nonetheless moist and flaky. The dish could have done without the rye crisps as it already included blocks of crispy potatoes that could rival McDonald's hash browns any day. Instead, it would have been nice if the main had another vegetable, other than just roasted beets, to balance out the meal better. This is a long review, visit Gastroworld for the rest. read more

Ordered a pizza to go last night since we wanted to sit on our boat and eat while watching fireworks. I know they said it'd be 'thin crust' but I was kinda hoping it'd be something one could hold on to. It was so limp the we had to fold/roll it up in order to eat it! I've been to Boom many times and today it was for my birthday! I enjoy going there for special occasions and also for morning coffee - it always seems special and the views of the inner harbour are amazing. Our server was lovely and didn't push us to finish quickly - we had a lot to talk about! We each had a glass of the Mission Hill Chardonnay - very ripe red apple with lime zest. My sister and I each opted for a different salad with prawns which were grilled beautifully - super fresh. The salads were also fresh and not over dressed. If there's anything to criticize about Boom, the prices have really skyrocketed over the past couple of years. This is not completely their fault, but it is a little much to spend $32 on Mussels and a piece of toast - especially when ordering Mussels is always a crap shoot anyhow. The wine list is one of the better ones in the city, but it's crazy pricey too. I didn't have a cocktail, but they make some wonderful ones with local spirits in particular. So do consider that list. Also, consider going during happy hour - the deals are quite good and it will bring down your bill. Overall, nice ambiance and the food was great. We enjoyed ourselves. It was $100 plus tip though so be prepared to be separated from your wallet (2 salads with prawns and 2 glasses of the cheapest wine). read more

I asked for seafood... this place is a huge MEH on that front. They have plenty of shellfish - oysters, mussels, clam chowder. They have salmon (everyone everywhere has salmon). They do have live streamed Dungeness crab but this isn't the down to earth crab shack type place I like to eat crab. The special was sea bass, which is not a local catch or at least not one of note. They did NOT have halibut, which just came into season locally. Apparently they were maybe going to change the menu at week's end and it might contain halibut then. The entire menu though was just so boring. Nothing jumped out as being from an inspired chef. You do you, but this place isn't for the Bourdain eaters of the world. Have been to Happy Hour and breakfast many times. Foods is OK, but the water views are great. Booked two months ago for Mother's Day morning by phone and was confirmed. Today, two weeks before Mother's Day received a phone call stating they are now only going to serve a set menu at $50 per person. The menu is most definitely not worth the price. When I originally booked no mention was made of any set menu at a set price. I was told that the person phoning me wasn't the one who accepted the booking. The only option left to me was pay $50 per person for a very limited selection of items or cancel. I cancelled, but I am extremely unhappy about the way this was handled. Now I have to scramble to try to find a place for breakfast on Mother's Day. This restaurant will not get my business again and we do support our local restaurants quite frequently! read more

Boom and Batten was a lovely surprise today, when I walked inside today to meet my two friends for Happy hour. Our reservation thru Open Table had us at a lovely window seat where we could gaze out into the harbour and at the gorgeous yachts moored there, watch the coming and going of the Clipper to Seattle and the Coho to Port Angelas. In between we saw kayakers paddle by, Harbour air land and take off and the cute little pickle boats coming and going. They were making a stop not too far away so this could be a destination restaurant from the inner harbour. Happy hour is from 2:00 pm till 5:00 pm Reservations suggested thru Open Table as on this Friday it was steadily busy. Come warmer weather you can sit on the deck but be aware the small harbour planes leave a fuel odour that might not be pleasant with a beer. The interior is nicely decorated and the matching lava black dishes were a striking back drop for the food. We ordered happy hour fare and two of us ordered a half salad which came in a nice sized bowl. The wait staff were awesome and right there for water, drinks. orders, And the check. The food was delicious especially those parmesean truffle with lemon aioli. I had the generous prawn and pesto flatbread and my friend had the somewhat small falafel balls. The french fries were a good size worth sharing and my other friend ordered the ginger chili chicken which she said was delicious. All in all between the great service staff, hot and tasty food, awesome view and excellent ambiance, I'll be going back and keep it in mind when I get visitors to Victoria. read more

Started off a little rocky with service, but ended up being a good dining experience. For a Monday afternoon, I was surprised how busy it was. We were seated promptly, but it took a fair time for someone to ask if we had been helped and to bring water. They were apologetic, and after that, service was great. We stopped by for happy hour and tried a few dishes. We tried the falafel, parmesan truffle frites, margherita pizza, and smash burger. I ended up getting a cocktail, which was presented nicely. Our favourite dish was the truffle frites. It was crisp, well seasoned, and a good size portion. The smash burger was tasty. It was simple, but done right. The margherita pizza was okay, nothing special, but a decent pizza. I did like the flavour of the crust and that it had a bit of chew to it. The falafel was crisp and tasty, but the overall portion was very small. I was surprised that it only came with two. However, the plating was beautiful. Resturaunt looks great, has beautiful views but the staff are extremely arrogant and borderline racist. We asked one of the male servers for a chair and he said "oh not me" and walked away without care or help. Haven't experienced this much sass in a long time. And it also took them over 15 minutes to find an extra chair so I was standing the whole time, there was one wonderful lady who was serving us. While it looks beautiful and likely has good food, we were told flatly upon arrival for Sunday breakfast that no high chair would be offered for our 1-year old. When we asked for the manager to discuss this, she confirmed it and said they don't carry them because they are an "adult-oriented" restaurant and they "discourage customers from bringing small children", which I honestly have never heard of unless it is a bar. The manager added that their partner restaurants do the same, but at least one of those - Med Grill - has served us on multiple occasions and always had a high chair ready without hesitation. I loved the vibe of this place. It has a beautiful interior with a modern style and amazing views of the water! The staff is so friendly and they have so many aspects to the restaurant. There's a bar, stools, booths, window tables, a bakery, and a lounge-like section by the bakery. I wasn't impressed with their pepperoni pizza because it was too thin, too floury, and not enough sauce. The pepperoni was unique though and high quality with some spice. I liked their crust too. Their ceviche was incredible!! That was my favorite dish here because the crunchy chips added a salty component to the limey tuna. I loved how the tuna was tossed in avocado - it added great taste. It was an incredible combination of flavors and left me wanting 10 more plates of it! My mom enjoyed her halibut but said it should've been a larger dish for the price, and considering it's a main course. She thought it was a very large plate for a small portion. Even though It was pretty small, it was very crispy and tasty. Definitely worth stopping by! (Get the ceviche !!!!)
