Stopped at this charming pub-style restaurant on the way to the ferries. The gardens were adorable and a really cute touch for this tucked-away gem. The servers were so friendly and welcoming, and the chowder is to DIE for. The burger wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't bad; the seafood chowder just really overshadowed it. If you want more than just soup, I highly recommend getting it as a replacement for fries with a handheld. My partner got the beef dip and that was an excellent sandwich, tender and well-seasoned. If you're on your way in or out of the Swartz Bay terminal, this is an excellent stop for a solid meal near the coast with charming decor. read more

Had not been to the Stonehouse for a long time but so glad that we did. The spot has a very nice ambience - clearly a popular place judging from the number of diners for a Thursday night - and every reason why, as the service was great, and the food was excellent. Kudos to the chef/kitchen staff. Best Fish & Chips I've had in Sidney and the other dishes including pizza and Shepard's Pie were likewise terrific and much enjoyed! read more

Yummy stop en route to the ferry with Guinness on tap! We had reservations for the 3pm ferry and checked out of our Victoria hotel at 11:30am. So we stopped by Stonehouse for lunch. We had a large breakfast and no one was particularly hungry so we ordered the spinach salad and tomato/basil pizza for the four of us. Food was yummy. I was pleasantly surprised to learn they had Guinness on tap. I had a beautifully poured Black and Gold (Guinness and Strongbow cider). Our server was helpful and kind. I will definitely return. This is a sit down restaurant so I recommend it for coming from the ferry or if you have plenty of time to get to your ferry. If you are in a rush or don't have reservations or expect a long line at the ferry; try stopping by another time. Also, there is accessible parking in the upper lot with a path to the restaurant. If driving to the ferry terminal after you will have to double back just as Google maps shows. It may be possible to walk to the ferry terminal from here - I will update this review if I learn more. read more

We rode the ferry from Vancouver through the stunning Islands. Seals, otters, incredible views. We got off the ferry and looked for a spot to eat. The Stonehouse Pub came recommended so we went in. Service was quick and friendly. We started with the soup of the day, which was potato and bacon. The soup was wonderful, not canned, very nice. Chilly and rainy outside, the potato soup was hot and warmed us up perfectly. If they sold it in tubs to go, I would have stocked up. Next we had a Garden Bruschetta, toasty with tomatoes and herbs. Great! Finally, I had the Fish Tacos. I cannot praise them highly enough. I know fish tacos are not gourmet fare, but damn! These were some bomb-ass fish tacos! The building was hand-built as a private residence in the '30s and someone put great care into details. When it was converted to a pub in the 1980s, effort was made to keep the look and they succeeded. Rustic and unique. My wife and I were looking for a spot to go out for our anniversary dinner on the Peninsula, as our childcare was out that way.I hunted about and with the Deep Cove Chalet out of commission and the Brentwood Inn's menu being not keto friendly, this spot looked like a good option from their web site and some the reviews I read on here. I looked at the menu online and saw there were a few dishes I could make keto-friendly. We got there and were charmed by the look from the outside. Once we stepped in though our impression started to shift. It smelled of disinfectant and felt more like the taverns you find in rural Ontario, than what this place could be. I then ordered the dish that was going to be the best option for me only to be informed that at 7:00 they were already sold out of it. I then went for option 2, which was to be naked wings and a salad, only to be told that they only had breaded, I then opted for the steak sandwich and salad, hold the bread. This was actually quite good. Unfortunately, my wife ordered the beef dip that is supposed to be slow cooked short rib. Instead it was tough slices of beef that were overcooked. It was a rare night out for my wife and I and we were very disappointed by this spot. With a bit of work, it could be a real destination restaurant, but they need a new chef and to freshen the interior. read more

Popped in on a snowy evening when the rest of the Saanich peninsula was closed or snowed in. They were open, bit mostly empty as we strolled in. Lovely old English style place off the beaten path. We played it safe and both had the burger, which was good, not great, but good. Fries were excellent. For dessert we had homemade carrot cake, which was still a bit cold, probably just out of the fridge or freezer, but it was a slow night. Our Stonehouse Pub experience began as we admired the stonework of the beautiful building. On this warm night, our server asked us to choose seating inside or in either of the distinct garden terraces. We didn't go inside because we chose the outside view and the fresh air. Is that a lone wisteria vine sneaking in from right of the picture? Much of the roof is adorned with the vines. Gemma was attentive, while not smothering--not an easy accomplishment. She obviously cares that guests have a great experience. And the food! My compliments to the chef. I had the fish and chips. Each morsel was divine. The batter was almost fluffy. The fish fresh and cooked to the perfect temperature. It was not too greasy or even grease-flavoured. I would eat this twice a month if I lived nearby. My wife had the portobella burger. Gemma offered a selection of hot sauces and dijon mustard because my wife cannot eat the aioli sauce. She said it was probably the best she'd ever had. I tasted it and agreed. We were looking for a place to have a late dinner over Labor Day weekend and the mostly postive reviews on a travel website, along with the picturesque photos, led us here. The ambiance is great. We chose to be seated outside and were comfortable thanks to the heaters and the late summer evening. The setting is wonderfully picturesque; it reminded us both of the Boars Hede back home near Seattle. The negative reviews were mostly regarding fish, so we stuck to the beef; my wife had the steak "sandwich" and I had a hamburger. Whoever cooked them knows how to handle flame-grilled beef. Both were perfectly seared outside, juicy and tender inside. Likewise, the fries were perfect - crispy and seasoned outside, fluffy and tasty inside. The ceasar salad that came with my wife's steak (that I ended up with because she's not a salad eater) was appealing to the eye and palate both. In fact, I thought it was quite interesting how the arrangement of the salad, fries, and steak "sandwich" showed that presentation is as important as good food when serving a meal. I put quotes around "sandwich" because the steak was served atop a half of a grilled baguette. You could call it an open-face sandwich by a stretch of the imagination, but I'd expect that most people would just immediately move the steak to their plate and eat the bread separately like my wife did. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I ordered the Strongbow cider. My wife ordered Coke and was told they had Pepsi. ;-) She had 7-up. For dessert, we shared a "crumble" that was basically a fruit cobbler; I think probably rhubarb and cherry and maybe currant or blueberry - my wife ordered it so I didn't see the menu entry. It was big enough for two and came with vanilla ice cream as well and was quite tasty (and I am generally not all that excited about rhubarb). We'd definitely recommend the Stonehouse to anyone who likes a steak or burger. I can't speak to their other offerings, but they definitely know how to prepare their beef. read more

We arrived around 7 after signing in and we were waiting to served when we were yelled at that they wouldn't be able to seat us for 10-15 min. Not a issue with the current limited seating due to covid. Another couple came after and the same happened to them. My wife and I went for dinner and were not overly impressed. We had a table in the back room and concluded that it hadn't been dusted and properly cleaned for quite some time. The glass in the ceiling was very cloudy and spider webs with their prey were all over the mantel area. The room needs a cleaning from top to bottom and it needs to be painted. The one bathroom needs to be cleaned properly as well. The food was slow to arrive but it was very good. The price of our meal was reasonable. The staff were courteous and professional and worked very hard to meet customer needs. We won't be going back unless we hear that the restaurant has had a makeover. read more

First of all, I will say that the servers did the best they could under the circumstances of how busy they were on Halloween, and they were closing early for a private function. Having said this though, once my wife and I finally received our meals, I can honestly say I have never been so disappointed in a portion size for a meal that was nearly $30 each. The steak size was a very decent size, but it was like eating shoe leather. I received a child's size portion of potatoes, and vegetables though. 2 meals, 2 drinks, and tip, and I left hungry for $85. Completely unsatisfied is an understatement. read more

The Stonehouse is truly a stone house and is designed with an old-time feel. Service is pleasant and prices are fair but the food we had was just not good. Who knew there was this cool pub so close to the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal! If you get to the ferry with lots of time to spare, leave your car in line, take your ferry ticket (for re-entry), and head to the pub. Very disappointing - had been looking forward to finally trying this place. Three disjointed rooms make up this pub, one of which was so close to the kitchen you could hear the death metal playing. We were seated in the 'dining room' - a soulless room with austere lighting, crummy plastic checkered tablecloths and plastic sheeting taped to the windows to keep the heat in. While this wasn't my first visit to Stonehouse, it is my first Yelp review. Yesterday afternoon, my parents and I decided to get a late lunch before I had to head back home to Seattle. Upon arriving at the restaurant, we noticed a lovely guitarist sitting under a tent outside playing lovely music. Wish we had've sat outside to enjoy the tunes - next time! We were warmly greeted by our server and seated in a lovely room with windows that allowed the sunshine to envelop the room. I stuck with water with a wedge of lemon for a drink, while perusing the many menu choices. It was so hard to decide, but I ultimately opted to go with the fish tacos. I find fish tacos are ubiquitous these days on restaurant menus, but they're a crowd pleaser; it was nice that you had a choice between grilled or fried fish (I went with grilled). My mom and I also shared the daily soup - which was a homemade bowl of beef barley. I am pretty sure they used their Friday night prime rib in the soup, and it was divine albeit a bit too salty. For $8.95 a bowl (I believe), it does seem steep for soup. Service continued to be friendly and prompt, with our food arriving about 10-15 minutes after we finished the soup. My dad ordered the crab and mango quesadilla - an unusual combination, but an absolutely colorful and hearty dish. The quesadilla was truly stuffed with real crab which was very impressive! So many restaurants advertise crab as an ingredient in their food (besides crab cakes) but you seldom see the dish actually groan with grab. Kudos to Stonehouse for this! My fish tacos were divine - three corn tortillas (slightly toasted and stale) with a generous chunk of cod, topped with crispy cabbage shreds, a spicy aioli, and some delicious salsa. At $13.95 these seemed reasonably priced and were perfect for a late lunch. Would I be back? Absolutely - when you get great service and good food, you just can't go wrong. read more

The Stonehouse is set in a tranquil glade of Douglas fir near the ferry terminal and the ocean, and the building is charming. So, an A+ for the setting. The beer and wine list is OK too, with a number of good BC wines and craft beers [ plus Stroh's - remember it? If your grandfather was a an American, Stroh's [ or Bud, or Schlitz] might have been his beer, or if he was Canadian it might have been the equally awful Molson's Canadian or Labatt's Blue. So, an A for ambience and drinks [except for the Stroh's]. But, maybe you'd better leave it at that ,and go somewhere else for food, because the fish tacos I tried to eat today - and failed- were -- disgusting. The tacos were baked until they couldn't be cut with a table knife, and any chance of tasting the codfish was ruled out by a huge overdose of cayenne pepper. Sad to say, I visited the Stonehouse a year ago, and the food was just as bad then. Memo to the owner: there are lots of good cooks on our beautiful Island, and even a few great chefs, so get please get one! read more

Do you like inconsiderate servers? Then look no further! We just finished eating while waiting for a ferry and were appalled at the service. We were seated at the only table on the patio with no umbrella. This was fine of course because we simply moved to one side in the shade. All was well until a reservation of 4 arrived and our waitress prioritized these people over us young plebes, requesting we move to the original seating arrangement back in the sun. We obliged but I also asked if there was another umbrella. Our waitress responded with a curt "No" and offered no solutions since CLEARLY we were not interested in sitting in the sun. The group of 4 sat down and settled in, allowing us to move back into the shade. When we were ready to leave we attempted to make small talk with our waitress, who was so rude and unwilling to engage we were left utterly appalled at her behaviour. Perhaps she was having a bad day and if so, then I sympathize. If that was the case, she should have shared that. Unfortunately, you work in an industry where you provide a service to clients that expects friendly and considerate service, two things we did not receive. Oh and the crab cakes were not worth the $15, though the salmon burger and salad was quite good. Overall, would not go back. The market at the ferry was way more fun. Go treat yourself to some freshly made (every order!) donuts. WAYYY friendlier service too. read more
