After starving to death (by choice-that ferry food looked and smelled nasty) on the1 1/2 hour ferry ride from the mainland we were ready for some good food. It's in a gas station parking lot attached to the Howard Johnson. Do not let that deter you, it was really solid pub food, definitely better and sustansibly more affordable than any pub I've eaten at in downtown Victoria. Clearly all of the other diners were locals, at 2pm on a Saturday. We sat in a cozy booth in the bar after being greeted by a very friendly bartender. We ordered two pints of Magners, the shepherd's pie with salad and the beef dip with frites. The shepherd's pie was beef, so technically a cottage pie, which I prefer. It came piping hot, with little scoops of mash on top and a dark colored gravy. Perfection, meaty, creamy, cheesy deliciousness. The salad was quite nice with field greens, cherry tomato halves, carrot, cucumber and green onion with housemade basalmic vinaigrette. The frites were of the super crispy possibly breaded variety, really excellent dipped in the au jus that came with the roast beef dip. I'd definitely come back on my next visit to get really good Irish pub grub without all the touristy prices. read more

I wouldn't recommend this bar. The drinks don't seem to be made properly. It's in a very cute spot, but the service from our server kayla was not good. She seemed more interested in flirting with the guys sitting by themselves while dressed very inappropriately, then refilling our drinks at the table. Great location to stop when getting off the ferry, busy evening with many locals watching the Canadian junior hockey gold game but the service was great. I enjoyed the Salmon Cobb salad that was huge and fresh, salmon grilled well. My dh had Fish & chips which was a large portion and not too greasy, my son enjoyed the shrimp & grits & declared it was really good, he would have it again. Cozy little Victorian area in the back with soft couches and a coffee table. Unfortunately, it's so comfortable that the rich poutine and stew are bound to give heartburn on the couch. The rest is a traditional sports bar with a pub feel. Dart boards and a billiards room compete it. The poutine, Guinness beef stew, Yorkshire pudding, and fish and chips were all perfect and fast. Not bad but not great. The food was ok and the whole place was very average. The person that served us was an Irish gentleman who was always walking away when you tried to talk to him or order something, it was very unusual. I don't think he was being rude but he acted as if it was very busy even though there was only 3 other tables and at least 1 other waitress. Hung out for about an hour while waiting for my flight at Victoria airport. Servers said hello as soon as I walked in and encouraged me to sit anywhere. Good start!! In general servers were friendly and pleasant. Pub had a really nice feel with a mix of some old world (UK) charm like the comfy leather couches and dart boards and big screen TVs where I could watch the game (baseball tonight). The fireplace wasn't lit tonight but the built in bookshelves surrounding it which were filled with old hardcovers and other accessories were evidence of the Charles Dickens theme. Wasn't starving so settled on a 'starter' - the sliders - three ways (lamb, beef and chicken). They were each very tasty and served with a pickle and on pretzel slider buns with the special house Burger sauce. Not sure how 'house ' it is but it was very good and didn't overpower the meat in any of the sliders. Nice touch. Sliders were very tasty and moist. Not dried out at all. My only complaint was the meat on each of the sliders (except for the lamb) was a little small for the size of the buns. That being said, the chef used pretzel slider buns bade by Portafino Bakery (which supplies many restaurants and food stores on Vancouver island and the mainland) for each of the sliders which added to the food experience. Between the house sauce and the pretzel bun I wasn't as fussed about the size of the patty as I would have otherwise been. Nice choice and evidence that each slider was really good .and well prepared. I'm not a beer drinker but enjoyed a nice Strongbow cider on tap with my sliders and note that there are about 25-30 different beer taps at the bar. Great selection! Not sure if I'll be back out on the west coast again anytime soon but, if I am, I'd be keen to try other items in the menu. Definitely recommend a visit if you're in town. GREAT spot on the way to Buchart Gardens. Cozy and friendly. Comfortable place too. My single negative is all the TV screens, but that's just my bias. Clearly this is where friends meet and hang out. Thoughtful, If you over imbibe they have a driver take you home (well . . . they might balk at Roseburg, Oregon) and keep you safe out of jail. read more

Had a short stay in Sidney and stay at a hotel down the road from this pub and decided to pop in for dinner. Right away the bartender came over with a menu for me, and welcomed me. Super cool guy from my home province. The server was attentive and helpful as well (I have a dairy allergy so I always appreciate leaving a restaurant without an allergic reaction). I ordered fish tacos (and fries) and a cider. The food was fast and super good and fresh. The fries were super good! I definitely plan to come back one day. read more

I fully expected to have a terrible time here last Friday night, so naturally I prepared myself by getting drunk. Surprisingly, despite all the dire omens (bigscreen tvs, Top 40 dance music, and a mostly 20something crowd), it was pretty damned fun. And no, it wasn't just the booze. The mixed crowd was cheerful and unpretentious. Even the traditional bastion of bitchiness, the women's washroom, was attitude-free. Our server was attentive and friendly. The veggie burger platters were kickass. Also extra points for having Van Gogh Espresso Vodka. Yes, the music was cheesy and juvenile. But the good vibes, good food, and great service made me consider returning. Maybe even sober. Well, maybe. read more

Was here on two consecutive nights while in Sidney for business. On the first night, I waited just across from the bar, in plain view of the bartender and two servers. I waited for 20 minutes without any staff offering to serve me. I finally went up to the bar and ordered a local beer. It was $9.50 for a draft beer! Horrible service AND a premium price? So, this being Sidney and an urban mecca for premium dining establishments, I tried again the next night. This time though, I thought, screw the bar, I'm going to order dinner. So I went and sat down in the dining area. I waited 10 minutes, then placed my feet up on the table next to mine, figuring staff would come over and object. Nothing. After 15 minutes, I took my shoes off and put my bare feet up on the table. Nothing. I put my shoes back on at about the 20 minute mark and stood up on the booth. No response from any staff at all to me standing on the furniture in the middle of their dining area. About 5 minutes later, I crouched down and spit on the table. Still nothing. Right around the 27 minute mark the bartender came over and asked me if I wanted anything. I politely declined and walked over to McDonalds where I received prompt and friendly service. So, if you end up eating here, and you get sick, that was probably from me. Not sure if it was my foot fungus or saliva on your table, but you probably don't care much by this point. You probably should have read this review before you outlasted their shitty service to actually get served anything. On the flip side, while I'm more of a beer guy, I hear they have a fantastic apple beverage here. Just tell your server that you would like a Warm Dickens Cider! read more

I had the pleasure of eating my first Bangers & Mash in ages. Being from the USA, we don't normally see that on our menus so when I saw the Charles Dickens had it on the menu, I had no choice. I really enjoyed this place and have been back a few times. The staff are friendly and service is pretty good. I have tried the Los Cabo tacos, which are amazing. They have a little zip to them but also sweet. The fries are so crispy and delicious. I have also tried the the karate bowl with prawns and teriyaki sauce and rice which is so amazing, I crave this dish now it was that good!! They also have good selection of craft beer. Wonderful food and great service--love the atmosphere. The peach/blueberry/bourbon Pie was incredible. Glad we shared the two piece Halibut & Chips--the portions are ample. When the chef came out to talk to us (at our request) I gave her a standing ovation, applause & a hug. YES IT WAS THAT GOOD ;). Wish we could transport the whole place back to Edmonton. read more

My sister and my friend have both been to England, and they said this pub definitely had a British feel! Only it was much more spacious than your typical British pub. Not sure why there was a disco ball. It wasn't crowded when we went for dinner, but the waitress seemed rushed. It was nice of her to reprint the receipts after I checked in on yelp for the 10% off deal. Not much selection when it comes to ordering something that's vegan. We stopped in to kill 3 hours before our ferry ride to next stop and this is the only pub the taxi driver knew in town. We weren't too thrilled upon getting out of the taxi, but we were very surprised at how good the food was! I asked the waitress, how is the Caesar salad? And she responded with "pretty good"! Actually, it was one of the better ones I've had in a while, and I'm pretty picky! She also said they make their own dressing each morning. Then I ordered their classic hotdog, as I'm a hotdog LOVER!! It was AMAZING!! Real Bacon strips, onion rings, cheese... omg... SO GOOD! I was very full and HAPPY! Service was no problem for us, place was clean enough, albeit a bit old furnishings, but this is a PUB! So I just had to give my 2 cents, as I would definitely come back if we are ever in Sidney again. read more

Not a bad little bar. Open late with kitchen open until 11PM, decent selection of beers, has an adjacent cold beer and wine store. Has a pool table, a dart board and a BC Lotto terminal. Bartenders are very attentive, but the servers can sometimes be slow to check up on you. The bathrooms are sketchy. read more
