Puttanesca pasta
Melissa E.

Loved this pub! Great patio, great service and the food was so yummy! The drink menu was decent and prices weren't too bad, glass of wine for $8! We ordered the Poke bowl and the Puttanesca pasta. The poke was delish! Tuna fresh and had all the fixings, wakame, avocado, cucumber etc...only critic is they used a basmati rice I believe or a long grain white. not sure but a sushi rice would have made it top notch. The pasta was delicious. It's a spicy tomato with capers, olives, tomatoes. I ordered it just as is but you can add a protein if you wanted. The sauce was so tasty, not too spicy at all and the bread was perfect. The outside dining was so nice, great ambience and lovely water view.

* Nice view - but clumsy * This spot holds true to the old rule about the restaurants with the best views tend not to have the best food. The view, being nestled in Poet's Cove surrounded by water and distant islands, was the highlight: http://www.yelp.ca/biz_photos/5W6YS6rZaO0VYs7h0AoNCA?select=65NMWQaQ4XwlbzE95IW2TA The setting overall is the feel of a pub plopped down into a marina with a nice view staffed by friendly servers who are rather inexperienced and a bit clumsy with their service paralleling the slightly clumsy food preparation by the kitchen. On to the food.... The grilled tuna burger had two pieces of tuna which had a bit of a clumsy portioning so that one was much thicker than the other. As you may imagine this resulted in one being underdone and one being overdone. Big surprise. The fish was fresh at least. It was served on a bun which was nice, although perhaps a bit too bready with lettuce, tomato, and an avocado spread. I think the avocado spread may have been made too far in advance as it was starting to turn slightly brown giving a clumsy feel to the overall burger. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz_photos/5W6YS6rZaO0VYs7h0AoNCA?select=kAxHu_RzmUpzTFHxTGh7XQ It came with your choice of salad or soup (we had one of each). The salad was a fairly standard supermarket quality mixed green with an overabundance of carrot shavings. It was a nice balsamic based dressing, but clumsily dressed with some parts being entirely dry and some soaking in the excessive dressing pooled under the greens. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz_photos/5W6YS6rZaO0VYs7h0AoNCA?select=d1UZ8BnxSy63BkTxa06Mkg The soup was the best dish. It had a rich tomato flavour and a nice thickness to it. The plating was a bit clumsy with a chip on the side of the plate and soup that sloshed around a bit too much without being cleaned up. Still overall the best dish: http://www.yelp.ca/biz_photos/5W6YS6rZaO0VYs7h0AoNCA?select=Pf_jpyvphsC7qVfUGx6yhQ Service was friendly, but clumsy in many ways (no water refills, no drink refills offered, plates put down somewhat roughly, no pepper offered, no cutlery given without request, etc.). I got the impression the waitress was seasonal help that had not been given much training at all. Overall a nice view, but I wouldn't rush back for the clumsy food and service!

service was a little slow each time I've been here but they all look like they're working hard.. I think the last time I was here the server was a little scatterbrained but whatever.. ordered pizza this time - the meatatarian was good but the seafood one was too seafoody darts are fun to play and they have 2 boards.. I'd suggest some wipes or at least easily-available napkins by the darts because I couldn't grab the bar staff's attention so we just used the other board.. no biggie. hoyne dark matter is a really great beer on tap. truffle fries are bomb with lemony tartar-sauce-like dip, but now I'm describing it it doesn't sound so great.. whatev.

This place is actually amazing! Great value for money, excellent food, and the service was awesome too. We had a really nice tall gentleman serve us at the bar, and the manager even came over to introduce herself and shook our hands. We felt totally comfortable there, wine list could be a bit better but the manager said that she is working on it. I would highly recommend stopping into Syrens. I'm looking forward to the restaurant upstairs opening for dinner in the summer. We will be back on our next trip to Pender. They also have a wicked Happy Hour and serve off sales for the boats and rooms. They were so kind to accommodate any kind of dietary needs. I wanted the seafood fettucine but they had ran out of gluten-free pasta, so they made it for me with rice! It was freaking delicious!

Rip-off $16 lasagna with mini salad. Poor value and taste on par with costco (but not in the mini-portion size given at Syrens)

Clearly a local fave, this place hosts many social opportunities, including karaoke and live bands! We came in because it's what you do when you visit Pender! I got the Gourmet Greens (beets, carrots, toasted pumpkin seeds, feta, green onion with red vinegar dressing). This salad was outstanding! Loved the complexity of the flavors and felt super healthy while consuming their drinks! I also got their Microdose Pizza (white sauce, mozzarella, mushroom, goat cheese - subbed for feta - pesto and truffle drizzle). I'm fairly certain they did not add the feta, pesto, or truffle but regardless, the pizza was really good! The reason we were here was because of their wings, specifically their in house made habanero sauce ones. I tried the sauce and was addicted! It's freaking hot but has so much flavor! I was hooked! I also got their Caesar which they pair with Bee Wild Distillery. They use the Nocturne (Black Garlic) vodka. The vodka is super good but kids of gets lost in the drink! Still good! recommend coming to this place! It's great for food, atmosphere, and the views!

It's in a gas station parking lot attached to the Howard Johnson. Do not let that deter you, it was really solid pub food, definitely better and sustansibly more affordable than any pub I've eaten at in downtown Victoria. Clearly all of the other diners were locals, at 2pm on a Saturday. We sat in a cozy booth in the bar after being greeted by a very friendly bartender. We ordered two pints of Magners, the shepherd's pie with salad and the beef dip with frites. The shepherd's pie was beef, so technically a cottage pie, which I prefer. It came piping hot, with little scoops of mash on top and a dark colored gravy. Perfection, meaty, creamy, cheesy deliciousness. The salad was quite nice with field greens, cherry tomato halves, carrot, cucumber and green onion with housemade basalmic vinaigrette. The frites were of the super crispy possibly breaded variety, really excellent dipped in the au jus that came with the roast beef dip. I'd definitely come back on my next visit to get really good Irish pub grub without all the touristy prices.

We kept our order simple because our server warned us that the kitchen was backed up (it was busy). We ordered: --small house salad with chicken and bacon --pulled pork sandwich --side of Parmesan fries with garlic aioli It was tasty, pub food and just what we had hoped for. But the service sang--the team was cohesive and collaborative, which meant we got everything we asked for. It felt great to be here. We'll return--now that we know how fun the bus ride is, we are definitely looking forward to more.

All we could find that was open aside from the Galiano Inn was the Hummingbird Pub. It is a pub that really needs some TLC. There were 2 ladies working when we were there and they were both amazing. They were very hospitable, friendly and helpful. The best thing about the pub. We shared an order of salt and pepper chicken wings. My husband said they were some of the most expensive chicken wings that we've had. It was $22.00 for 8 small overcooked, dried out wings. If we weren't in such a hurry we probably would have sent it back. It's unfortunate that there are no dining options on Galiano. We definitely would not return to the Hummingbird Pub.

An absolute must, served warm with a fragrant and flavourful olive oil. The olives are so simple yet the chef adds a ton of behind the scenes flavours (think, marinating in a bunch of complimentary flavours). I ordered the vegan and GF dal one night! Huge portions with fresh shaved vegetables and a generous serving of lentils. A hearty and comforting meal that packs a ton for protein. I was utterly stuffed for hours after this meal. Next night, I ordered the vegan and GF pizza (no fake cheese, just a ton of partnered vegetables, herbs, and pine nuts). I loved this dish. Again, huge servings and a ton of delicate touches. The roasted squash added such a lovely texture and the dill and pine nuts were an excellent choice. We also got the salad, which was anything but basic. Pine nuts and herbs and a sweet, savoury dressing. It was all super excellent. Thank you for making our island experience truly remarkable!
