We loved our experience here from the zany bus ride to the outstanding service and tasty food. We also appreciated the quaint atmosphere where children were free to run around on the safe, enclosed yard, near outdoor tables with ample shade. We kept our order simple because our server warned us that the kitchen was backed up (it was busy). We ordered: --small house salad with chicken and bacon --pulled pork sandwich --side of Parmesan fries with garlic aioli It was tasty, pub food and just what we had hoped for. But the service sang--the team was cohesive and collaborative, which meant we got everything we asked for. It felt great to be here. Dining options on Galiano Island are very limited. We were on Galiano for a celebration of life. We did not have time to grab anything to eat before boarding the ferry so we decided to wait until we got to Galiano. All we could find that was open aside from the Galiano Inn was the Hummingbird Pub. It is a pub that really needs some TLC. There were 2 ladies working when we were there and they were both amazing. They were very hospitable, friendly and helpful. The best thing about the pub. We shared an order of salt and pepper chicken wings. My husband said they were some of the most expensive chicken wings that we've had. It was $22.00 for 8 small overcooked, dried out wings. If we weren't in such a hurry we probably would have sent it back. It's unfortunate that there are no dining options on Galiano. We definitely would not return to the Hummingbird Pub. read more

When visiting Galiano Island, one is always told to not miss the Hummingbird Pub. Is it indeed, 'all that'? THE ROSES: Cozy, rustic dining area. Nice selection of local beers. My cod fish and chips was delightfully fresh, and the chips were done perfectly. THE THORNS: Location in the Island's interior can make it hard to get to if you come by private boat. They do have a shuttle bus, the 'Hummingbird Bus', that will pick you up (more on that in a minute). NEITHER ROSE NOR THORN: As mentioned before, the Hummingbird Pub has a bus, the 'Hummingbird Bus', that runs in the area on a reasonably regular schedule picking up folks at places like Montague Harbor and returning them. Local character/raconteur/author/humorist/celebrity Tom 'Tommy Transit' Tompkins is usually the driver, and he is a delight! A retired transit driver from Vancouver, his book, 'Tommy Transit's Bus Tales: How to Change the World from 9 to 5" (available on Amazon) is a breezy, uplifting read. A ride on the Hummingbird Bus is apparently a lot of fun. Unfortunately, when we were there the bus was broken down, but Mr. T. gave us a ride in his car. THE VERDICT: To be brutally honest, if it weren't for the Hummingbird Bus, the Hummingbird Pub would be Just Another Nice Country Pub. The food, etc isn't terrible nor outstanding, just nice. Unfortunately Tommy Is no longer the driver and the waitstaff is extremely rude. We will not be going back. When we got there today the lady didn't even greet us, asked if we were on the bus and then went outside and said we only have two waitstaff and we're not expecting this many people on the 4pm bus so it's going to take a while.... We have been going for years and the only reason we have gone is the bus ride but now that Tommy is gone why would anyone want to go there. It's run down, the new driver is not friendly, the food is mediocre at best & waitstaff is not friendly. Please go visit other restaurants on the island and skip the pub! read more

The food was extremely overpriced, not even homemade. Ordered chicken strips that were the size of chicken nuggets at McDonald's, cost $18 no side just the "strips". SERVICE WAS POOR. waitress was waiting a5 the front doing nothing, but somehow needed time to serve us. Didn't check on us. When my friend did not tip (because of poor service and extremely overpriced good).waitress had the audacity to demand a tip for which she did nothing to earn. The Hummingbird Pub is the classic story of a place that has won the battle only to lose the war. They are written up in every guidebook that mentions Galiano Island. The bus is mentioned, the atmosphere, the fact that it is the only pub on the island...and so the people come. This is one of the most popular spots on the island, especially at dark, and absolutely for those who lack personal transportation. Unfortunately, what the pub has in popularity it lacks in staff. The night we visited featured one bartender (the owner) one waitress (her friend) and two people in the kitchen (her daughter and a second friend) to serve the 10-20 people who appeared each time the bus pulled into the otherwise mostly empty parking lot. Let's just say that I had a long wait for my food. Long. More than an hour long. And that when it arrived it was eaten out of necessity vs pleasure. The photos I've posted are not of a half finished plate. This is how my fish arrived at the table. Only one person in my group was happy the evening we visited the Hummingbird Pub. My brother was smart enough to look around and leave the table. He enjoyed his 1 kilometer walk back to our lodging and then enjoyed our tales of woe. I'm sorry that the Pub has fallen victim to its fame. It is a lovely piece of property and a perfect meeting place for a group that is scattered over the island. I hope that the owner can find some more help or figure out how to pare the menu down to the bare basics. Fish, chips, one soup per day, and a salad option would be popular, simple, and a better choice than a long wait for unappetizing food. read more

None of the food made me sick!!! Such was the joy, and highlight, of the meal. I am told that the burgers were "okay" and "good". That could have been overly generous, or those could have been honest statements. I'll go with the assumption that those were honest statements. So, a solid-ish two stars. As Paul Harvey would say, "and now for the rest of the story!" Beer: You order type X and get type X. Great. "Can I get a refill of X?" "You want another X?" "Yes, please." "Here's your Š." "Huh?" Ordered one type of beer, got another. Ordered onion rings, but they ran out. Fish and Chips were served, but they were tasteless. The French fries had no seasoning and was tasteless. The service? Nope. Other people's food came to us. The double Margaritas were light on al alcohol. Batter was tasteless. French fries were without salt. The fact that we ordered different drinks than what was delivered didn't seem to bother anyone overly much. If I wasn't on an island, I would have gone somewhere else. :-( read more

I didn't even eat because my food never came. I entered the pub, seated myself. Had to track down the waitress and ordered my food. The waitress appeared to be high. She got mad when I asked a question about the menu. I waited 45 minutes and decided to leave without saying anything after someone who came in after me, had food. I've previously eaten here. I like this place, I really do. It's just that the service is slow, and the food quality has really slipped. I get it, it's partly to do with the pace of life on the island, and I'm sure it's hard to find help in such a small community, but be prepared for a long wait for service, drinks, and food. We had a bad experience with the salad during our last visit. 3 of us had lettuce that seemed to have been frozen. The waitress, and then the owner assured us it hadn't, and said the cook had prepared the lettuce incorrectly, but offered no discount or options to make things right. The ambiance is nice, the setting is beautiful, and the pub bus is a great idea. Would be happy to give a better review if they could provide better service. Maybe a smaller menu would help speed things up a bit. read more

A DIY drinking hole if there ever were one, there's a sign outside Hummingbird that says, "Best Pub Food On Galiano" -- cute, Hummingbird, we all know that you also happen to be the only pub on Galiano. Don't expect craft beers, don't expect a wine list, do expect to drink their very own Long Island Iced Teas, do expect to drink many of them, do expect a serious case of the diabeetus after a few nights of doing so. Open pretty much every single day of the year, Hummingbird has the lock down on the restaurant / night life scene on the island. Nondiscriminatory toward travelers, tourists, locals, weirdos, misfits, or otherwise, Hummingbird is pretty okay when it comes to getting a drink and a decent meal when on island-time. I mean, they even offer karaoke. Karaoke! Burgers, fries (hand-cut, no less), nachos, and plenty of veggie options, the food is surprisingly better than standard pub grub, but classic in selection. And those burgers? All kinds of yes. Any of 'em. They come with Velveeta cheese slices, people! Also--difference--they've wisely tapped into the seafood abundance that comes with running a restaurant on an island on the Canadian pacific coast. The scallops (local, natch), served with a rich white wine butter sauce, are especially tasty; and from what I hear, the fish and chips are entirely worth a try. Portions? Massive. I don't know how this place can even afford to stay open all day, everyday. I mean, there's got to be nights when the only patron is that one guy who's always there, but I take comfort in that somehow. They didn't turn their noses when I asked for fresh lime with my gin, and they weren't unsettled by my high heels amidst the sea of gumboots, and their food is pretty damn decent ... so for that, Hummingbird Pub is absolutely A-OK. read more

I give the guy driving the bus a 5 but the restaurant a 1. The bus driver is entertaining, nice and funny. Be sure and have cash on you to give him a tip. He deserves it!! The restaurant is a different story. We got there and ordered right away yet we were the last people to get our food - 90 minutes later! I asked a waiter for water and he told me it is possible but I would have to ask our waiter. When I did we learned we would have to pay for a glass of water. If we'd known how lovely and comfortable it was, we might have come here on our first day and stayed for the duration. Perhaps, for our liver's sake, it was good we didn't. Pub grub. Pub bevies. Interesting menu which includes all manner of hummingbird facts and photos. Did you know that hummingbird food should not be made using honey as honey contains a fungus that can coat the bird's tongue and eventually cause its death?!?!!? Best place to eat and drink and meet people on Galiano island. A great pub! OK, it IS the only one on an island that can get a little 'sleepy' at times. That being said, the menu is good, with a wide selection of tasty pub fare, with a great consistency. Drinks menu offers whatever you might want with good local beer options. Most importantly the ambience is great: chilled, and with a fantastic bit of music playing. Highly recommended, for all the right reasons. Oh, and they have a school bus taxi service for those who don't live walking distance away.....which on a dimly lit island is a great service! Spent plenty of time on galiano at all times of year and the quality here does not vary much. read more

The Hummingbird is cute, but I think it's seen better days. The free pub bus from the Marina/Campground looked pretty popular, but we had a very dismal lunch there. Very slow service despite not being busy, out of things (and staff not aware), the kids "mac and cheese" was actually KD priced at $7. I had a reasonable halibut salad, and the teriyaki chicken burger was fine, but there were poor reviews from fellow diners having the burger (beef past its prime: ick) and special codburger. Lunch crowd includes sad scene of online/TV gambling. This is probably a fun pub in the evening, but I wouldn't go for the food until they change things up. For a little local Galiano experience, Hummingbird's the place! Great burgers, fish 'n' chips, and beer (that's all I've had, and probably will stick to it forevermore!) Their prices are OK, as are their portions. Hafta say some more fries would be appreciated. Service is decent but full of smalltown flavor to go along with the colorful crowd that can flow through. Fresh menu list daily is the best bet, but they make great pizza, Chinese food (fridays) burgers, fish& chios.. 2 Pool tables, live music on weekends (summertime) big screen tvs for sports every night. huge outdoor covered seating and open garden seating, this is thew place for locals, boaters, tradesman, travellers.. Oh, the Hummingbird, so many memories! This place is great - standard pub fare, with a west-coast twist, lovely ambiance and good solid service. When it's cold outside there's nothing like one of their soups and sitting in the pit by the fire. (Be sure to pet Bart, the HUGE fluffy orange pub cat, if he deigns to stick his head in to say hello =) Decent veggie options as well, and a nice well-rounded menu. One of those "must do" Galiano Island experiences. Good selection of beers, as well, and local music many nights. read more

We powered into Montague Harbor on a Monday afternoon and barely caught the "Pub Bus" up to the hummingbird ( I won't spoil the surprise, but boaters, you really ought to take the pub bus and let Tommy Transit rush you through a free spirited tour of Galiano's south end ). The bus ride is a must do if you find yourself anchored in Montague Harbor. Tommy the bus driver was very funny and the ride was a hoot. The pub was very busy yet the staff was friendly ( working their tails off) and we had the burger which was great. Totally awful. The free bus ride over was the only redeeming part of the experience. The fried food was acceptable but the steamer pot was like nothing I've ever had before. The broth was tasteless and seemed to be nothing more then a generous portion of lightly salted water(apparently in short supply as patrons are encouraged to buy bottled water). The Old Fashioned I ordered was a bit stingy and lacked the sugar cube, not the end of the world but still pretty sad. To top it off the bill came to $140 before tip for 4 drinks, 4 entrees, and one bowl of soup. Maybe just get drinks if you feel the need to check this place out. read more

Took some family members to the hummingbird pub for some good grub. We were never greeted or even acknowledged, had to grab our own menus. About 10 minutes in, she came by to take our order only to seem very confused and dazed. We had to ask for another round of drinks, and some of us would have had another, but it was never offered! The friendly, personal island service is as good as it gets. We visited by boat and waited at Marina Junction for the famed Hummingbird Bus with another group of boaters. Some friendly locals stopped by and let us know that since the last two runs didn't have any people waiting (the bus runs on the hour) that they decided to cancel the bus for the night. None of our US phones were getting service so the locals let us call the pub. Next thing you know, Warren the Great Canadian Hero was on his way in his Volvo to pick us up. He is an excellent driver, an amazing DJ, a first rate bartender, and all around good guy. Standard pub fare. We had pizza that was good. Played darts - real darts not plastic dart machine darts. They also have two pool tables and had tvs with Monday night football on. Perfect Monday evening on vacation. The whole time Warren played an excellent mix: REM, Digital Underground, Beck, Buzzcocks, Cibo Matto, Run DMC, and other great tunes maintaining a very cool vibe in this rustic, charming island pub.
