I ordered a carrot cake for a family function this weekend and picked it up this afternoon. The cake was ordered with no nuts. When I picked it up, the cake was falling apart in two places and the server told me that the baker had made it three times but it was "too sticky" whatever that means. She gave me a discount so I paid $40 instead of $45. To be honest, the cake looked pretty awful. My husband was reluctant to take it to the family function as it continued to fall apart by the time we got home 20 minutes later. He tasted the cake and it was hard and stale tasting. We were very disappointed that we paid $40 for this disaster. I am making a cake as I write this review. read more

Came here a little too late to get their freshly baked bread but did get a chance to try their cranberry scone and cinnamon bun. Both were delicious especially when heated up, even a day later. Pretty sad that I missed the whole loaves of bread but will definitely be back to try. If their baked goods are as good as their loaves, I definitely won't be disappointed. read more

I walked by this bakery but they were closed after 3pm last Saturday and when my regular bakery wasn't open this Saturday, I scrambled for another place closeby for a fresh loaf of sourdough bread for our Saturday afternoon sandwiches and Sunday breakfast. Pumpernickel Bread - dark rye The loaf I picked up was still warm and it felt heavy and substantial when I picked it up. Moist and dense, very filling. A loaf I would describe as wholesome with freshness! Olive oil cake with citrus - yum, it was a full cake that Ellen the owner sliced up for me. I took 2 large slices home and we absolutely love the texture and flavour of this cake. Look forward to trying the rest of their cakes. Chicken pot pie - made with organic chicken. I saw the sign by the cashier and knew I needed to try it. Generous portion, good for 2-3 people I would say. Had it for lunch this Sunday afternoon. The filling were perfectly seasoned, the chicken were tender and am so glad they use organic chicken as eating hormone injected meat feels absolutely artificial and more people need to learn why they should stop supporting that type of chicken farms. This is hands down, best place to buy bread in Vancouver. I always pick up a loaf of their multigrain sourdough. If you call ahead they'll put it aside! Bigsby is a neighborhood meeting place nestled in the Mackenzie Heights area where it is pretty much busy most of the time. Menu is quite simple with different types of sandwiches, quiche, and soup. They also serve the sandwiches and soup with their bread made in store. I didn't get a chance to try their baked goods but I had a Croque Madame for lunch. I had a choice between asparagus or ham with melted cheese and a fried egg on top, went with the ham option for some extra salted goodness. The portion is quite generous, you get a nice size open-faced sandwich on their homemade bread, with a beautifully cooked sunny-sided up egg on top. The homemade chips (very yummy!) and the pickled carrot (delicious and I don't usually like carrots at all) was a nice touch to the meal. This is definitely a comfort food type of place and I am looking forward to try their quiche next. They do have a good choice of beverages (juices and pop) and coffee as well. The cucumber water was a nice touch. The service is great; you can definitely tell that most people who visit Bigsby live in the neighborhood and have been coming for a long time. You can also have your lunch on the bench outside too if the weather is nice. I would recommend trying Bigsby if you happen to be in the area. It's definitely a little bit out of the way but that's what makes these neighborhood places so charming. I must add that the cafe smells DELICIOUS, you walk in and are instantly greeted by the wonderful scent of bacon!!! read more

I'm a visiting American much like SUSAN and I also decided to try a friend's neighborhood restaurant and have lunch there. Upon entering, it was indeed a cute little place with a delightful menu (see pictures). Just about to order when Hark! What do my eyes spy? A sign that says "CHILI & CHEESE POT PIES"... well that did it for me! I get freedom of speech in my country, much like the great nation of Canada and at what cost? None! I am a privileged member who happened to be born into a society where I'm able to say what I want and believe what I want! And how does all this relate to the food here? Absolutely nothing, SUSAN. I enjoyed my lovely Croque Madame so much that I felt like I was in Paris again. I returned again WITH MY OWN FREE WILL to dine at this TRUMP FREE establishment! I ordered a grilled cheese that did not disappoint.. It tasted like home.. Sourdough that was like poetry straight from San Francisco. I will spread the word to my Canadian and American friends to visit this bakery restaurant when they are in Vancouver because everyone with a brain and a good sense of humor is welcome (and I associate with no other kind of friends). A happy day in the rainy pacific northwest!! What joy, to know that humor and good food extends to my northern neighbors. I am compelled to leave five stars but would have left ten. Sure wish I lived in this city so I can treat myself and my TRUMP FREE friends, SUSAN. Oh and you could do no wrong with the other items on the menu. I was so tired, and very hungry. It had been a long day even though it was only around 2pm. I had missed lunch and was in that kind of weird zone between hungry numb and confused.... I wan't in the mood for baked goods (which is highly unusual for me) and needed some grounding goodness to refuel for round two of tourism duty. And there it was. The grilled cheese sandwich on the menu. Nice inviting slabs of fresh baked bread. Grilled to that caramel colored brown which would yield that satisfying crunch on first bite. I couldn't wait. But I had to, there was no seating available (a popular place). The cashier could see that I was at the precipice of reason and sensibility dulled by hunger and tourist fatigue and reassured me that she would come and find me when there was a table was available and that it would dovetail with the timing of my meal. After being reassured that I would not be left in the lurch. I sat outside on the bench and wondered....well I could perch my meal on my knees and eat here if need be. After all, it was quiet and the weather was excellent. But the cashier found me and a table and I enjoyed my comforting grilled cheese sandwich and the vibe. This cute lil place has so much charm and HOL-EE is the egg sandwich good. Perfect soft and sweet toasted brioche bun, delicately chopped and thoughtfully seasoned egg salad (minced onion, rough chopped fresh dill, lots o mayo, etc), topped with crunchy fresh pea shoots, and tasty homemade potato chips on the side. Extra points for the crunchy pickled yellow carrot in lieu of a standard pickled cuke (I hate pickled cukes, full disclosure). I'm extremely bummed this place is 1000s of kilometers away from my home, but was pumped to discover it in the little neighbourhood of Kerrisdale last week while there for a work trip. read more

Came here to see what the place was all about... Unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations. I ordered a steak sandwich and a cinnamon bun and was incredibly surprised that the total for the two was over $17. This is a large sum for a serve yourself cafeteria style bakery. The sandwich arrived open faced on a plate that was far too small for what was on it which made eating the dish somewhat difficult. The sandwich had some nicely cooked steak, but the rest was a mishmash of of textures and flavors (pickled onions, red onions that were far to strong, thrown on shoestring potatoes that only made for awkward eating etc.) The sandwich was also far too small for the price paid and should have included a side. The option to add fries would have led to my lunch totaling over $22! Bigsby is new to the area and Mackenzie does need this kind of business, but given the prices and the middling quality, they have a long way to go before I become a regular. For now, I will attribute it to growing pains and hope that when I return in a few months the value improves substantially. I do believe that they have the tools and location for success, so here's hoping the business works it out. read more

This place makes awesome homemade bread for all their items on the menu (mostly sandwiches and soup). The bread is perfectly crusty on the outside and fluffy yet chewy on the inside. It's a popular lunch spot for locals in the area and I can see why. On the day we came, Saturday of a long weekend, there was a lineup of 6-7 people already shortly after opening! They also sell freshly baked cinnamon buns with raisins, cookies, brownies, scones and what look to be their version of pop-tarts. I even saw whole pies that we're being picked up for Thanksgiving dinners that night. I tried a bowl of their carrot lentil soup on this visit. It was thick and yummy and had bits of ginger throughout. Served with two pieces of still warm baguette. My boyfriend had the grilled cheese sandwich which came with chips and a pickled carrot. The portion was large and he enjoyed it. They offer free cucumber water just around the corner from the front till. Nice touch! It was only today, two years into covid, that we picked up a loaf of multigrain. OMG! Have we been missing out. If bread can be divine, it must be from Bigsby's. Out of the park! This was a complete accidental find. I was still so angered up from what happened at BB goods (see that review) that my best friend and I came here to cool down, have lunch and just vent and chill. Firstly thank you to the owner for allowing me to vent about my bad situation at Buter Baked Goods. He was very sweet, made me smile and calmed me down. In fact his customer service and food for passion earned him another $3 in sales in addition to the B.E.L.T.C.H sand my best friend and I had ordered. I bought a small bag of "happy pills" = vanilla meringue kisses. They were pure bliss. My stomach got the sugar high it wanted. The bread on the sandwich was amazing and so were the chips. Prices are decent as well. There is limited seating, however, my best friend and I made it work. Dear Butter Baked Goods = I am totally over you. I am all about the meringue kisses from this place. This is hands down the best fruit crumble anywhere! Ordered it for a birthday and ordered 4 pieces for the zoom guests and a whole crumble for the birthday girl and family and you could feed an army with a whole slab!!! The single pieces are about a 6" square and can easily feed 2 people. Too much of this is better than none! Preorder for Saturday's but available all week. A bustling-at-lunchtime neighbourhood cafe in Mackenzie Village where parking is easy peasy. Across the street from Butter Bakery, and if you are deciding between the 2 places, I'd recommend going here. The homemade soups are delicious and for five bucks you can get a bowl of soup (different kinds avail. on different days of the week) with a slice of fresh, crusty loaf-variety bread. The sandwiches are huge (the grilled cheese is amazing!) and served on the homemade bread and the salads are fresh and creative and you can get some yummy protein options with the salads. Bigsby's bread is legendary. Better than Terra Breads, IMHO, and more reasonably priced. They even make their own potato chips - delicious, not overly salty, perfect thickness, not at all greasy. My latest faves among the sweets are their rhubarb coffee cake, gorgeously crisp around the edges and soft and custardy on the inside. Served warm, it's bread-pudding-ish. Their cherry pop tarts are the best - the pastry is "short" and tender, just like mom/grandma used to bake. They also make full-sized fruit, etc. pies. This place has a very loyal clientele and it's clear as to why - homemade, healthy offerings, and a relaxed vibe and cozy atmosphere where you can sit at a table or at stools up at the window. Their (Friday/weekend) challah bread looks gorgeous and tastes even better, a golden, generous-sized loaf, too. I place a standing order for their unbaked cherry pop tarts, which I buy by the dozen to keep in the freezer and bake when needed. My guests go crazy for them! read more

I had been told to try this place out because they have good bread. I chose a baguette which was simply OK. Nothing special. I also bought an apple-rhubarb pie which looked yummy. I am a pie baker so I know good pie. This pie was mediocre at best. Our lunch was delicious, but the service was terrible. We both ordered sandwiches and a bowl of matzo ball soup. It took at least 20 minutes before our food arrived! There was only one order before our order and hardly anyone was in this small casual place. What the ? Too bad as our sandwiches were really excellent and filling. The home made potato chips were tasty as well. Customers behind us waited outrageous times as well. The kitchen is open to view and there were lots of staff back there. Was driving by so I stopped in and ordered a loaf of bread and a freshly made mushroom soup to go....Both were delicious....... But for $5, you'd think the soup would be a bit larger than a small cup of coffee. If that wasn't bad enough, it was only filled a good 3/4" from the top and didn't even cover the head of their clear plastic spoon when standing straight up. I absolutely adore this place! Absolutely the best bread ever! I actually make soup so I can have the bread to go with it. It is a tiny business, but it is the attention to detail that I love. I devour the BELTCH sandwich, with pickled carrot and REAL chips. The servings are not huge, just really really good quality. I also love their scones ( cheese is my favourite) . I WAS a regular patron at Bigsby's until today when at 10am I went in to order some breakfast and I was told in a condescending tone that there was noway that I could have a breakfast sandwich before 11am. I was told that there aren't enough hours in the day to make these kinds of things ready in the morning. He went on to "explain" that they make the dough for the bread (there were dozens of loafs of bread next to him on the counter) and they have to cut the bacon, etc etc. I listened patiently to why they couldn't make me an egg sandwich at 10am, despite it being on the menu with no mention of this 11am time frame. I laughed it off, ordered a scone and sat down. At around 10:20ish more people came into the bakery, chatted about what to order when I overheard two people say they wanted the breakfast sandwich. Then to my surprise they ordered the breakfast sandwich with no fuss and were being served this breakfast sandwich by 10:30am.... Why did these customers get this sandwich at 10:30am? Why were they not talked down to as well? I can only assume that these actions were discriminatory, and that I was not a patron they take seriously. Also I think his actions are a testament to his laziness. A laziness that he did not mind showing me but would never let any of the more "wealthy" looking customers see. SO extremely rude. And if I could add one more thing, usually bakery's start baking in the wee hours of morning, if from 5am to 10am you can't find time to make an egg sandwich then I feel sorry for you. read more
