If you are a tough sell for sports shoes, you'll want to make a trip to ERC. It should come as no surprise that a store of this caliber can be found in Track Town USA. But the ERC team really does live up to their reputation. Wife has tough feet to fit. Not only did the ERC folks take the time to listen and recommend, but they also promised that she could return the shoes she bought if they didn't work out. They didn't, she did and I was impressed at how professional they were. We are not value shoppers, because for us the value is the advice and product, not the dollars. Having shared that, we didn't find the prices objectionable, but we also didn't bargain shop on Amazon. Definitely worth a visit, and they have certainly earned our trust and admiration. read more

I hate shopping for shoes, I have picky feet, and the worst time shopping for shoes. I walked into the store, I told the gentleman that I needed shoes I could stand and walk on all day long. I work two jobs one is standing one is chasing after preschoolers. With that, he said "I have ideas!" he actually measured my foot. something that hasn't been done since I was a kid. He brought out two types of shoes in a size bigger I wouldn't normally try. Both of them fit they had a little different feel, I left with two pairs of shoes. After standing in front of two clerks who completely ignored me while they discussed the cash register for two minutes, one of them finally looked at me and asked, "Do you need something?" I replied, "Yes, I need to speak to you." After asking my questions the woman touched a half dozen shoes on display and told me to try them on, then walked away to help another customer. Her rude and unprofessional behavior took me completely by surprise, because I have been experiencing a great deal of pain and I was told this was a store that could help me. Hopefully management will have a conversation with this woman about properly greeting and assisting guests. read more

Eugene Running Company has a small but clean store located in an upscale shopping center in Eugene. Despite its size, there is a lot of product packed in here, which feels a bit cramped when the store is virtually empty, so I can't imagine what it would feel like with ten or more customers inside. Though I'm not a running enthusiast, I appreciated the shop's storytelling: autographed pictures of Olympians and stories of Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight made me feel connected to the running community in Eugene. The Christmas decorations and music were also a nice touch that gave this place a local feel. Eugene Running Company is a specialty running store that offers more premiere products and niche running brands that you couldn't find at big box retail stores. Though Nike was the store's dominant brand, Mizuno, Hoka, and Brooks, and Asics had a noticeable presence on the shoe wall. Lightweight quarter-zip and mock-neck jackets seemed to be the big winter sellers, while tank tops and international t-shirts made up a big portion of the sale rack. Unfortunately, the customer service left a bad taste in my mouth. Neither of the salespeople, who were sitting at the front desk when I entered, acknowledged my presence during my entire shopping experience. They didn't seem interested in me or the other customer browsing the store, which is a huge disappointment given that many customers choose to shop at a local specialty store because of the knowledge and customer service the employees offer. My experience at Eugene Running Co. gave me no reason to return. read more

I'm a BIG Brooks fan, so I went with the Glycerin and have loved them. I ended up returning another style of Brooks that I originally purchased to try a different style, fortunately the return was super easy with no issues whatsoever and was able to get another style that worked better for me:) Overall a great experience! You'd think there'd be a million of these specialty runners' stores in Track Town USA. Then again, while it is Track Town, this is Eugene after all. It's still a small town for the most part, save for Nike University. Anyway, back to ERC ... just what you'd expect at a specialty runners' store. All the usual brands -- Nike, Adidas, Brooks, Mizuno, Asics, etc. Not to mention employees who know what they're talking about and can get runners outfitted properly. You won't find the generally underinformed type of workers who are native to places such as Foot Locker, Dick's, Sports Authority, and so on. If you have a specific foot issue -- and they do complimentary gait analysis here to figure out exactly what your foot issue is -- ERC's employees will stick your feet in the right kind of shoes. So if you're new to the running world, do yourself a favor and just head straight to ERC instead of wasting your time at the corporate sporting goods joints. We were visiting from out of town and my husband, who is an avid runner, wanted to check out this store. When we entered the store, I was surprised by how small it seemed. We were the only customers there. The sales staff immediately asked if we needed help and gave us space to wander around. We had our kids with us, and they started to get bored but the lady engaged them in conversation and showed them how to measure their feet. My husband convinced me to get a gait analysis, which they were happy to do. I was surprised by the results of the analysis but he explained them very clearly to me. He then asked me what shoes I was wearing and I told him the specific problems I had with my feet/fit. He was able to identify 5 pairs of shoes that would fit me and it was amazing that I managed to shortlist two pairs that were extremely comfortable for me from brands that I would never have considered before. Unlike my husband, I'm a beginner runner and have limited knowledge of running gear, but the guy explained everything to me without making me feel like a fool. I ended up purchasing a pair from them because they felt like heaven on my feet. I never thought running shoes could feel these comfortable. I could've bought them cheaper online but this guy gave me such great service. He was so methodical and knowledgeable and really wanted to help me find something that wouldn't hurt my feet. This is a nice little running store. It is really important for runners to support local, independent running stores. Big sports chains and the Internet just can't help either the serious or casual runner get into the right shoe. A lot of people get injured or even give up running for lack of the right shoe. I like seeing the local shops and while in Eugene for the NCAAs I stopped by Eugene Running. It's a tiny shop but that's OK they seemed to have everything I'd want if I were a Eugener (Eugenite? Eugenian?). I really liked the diverse selection of running and track memorabilia displayed everywhere in the store. It had a nice homey track-shack feel while still being clean and organized. I didn't get fitted for shoes but the staff seemed to know their stuff, and were friendly and enthusiastic. I got into a great discussion on the day's races with the staff. Tell me that is going to happen to you while you are shopping on-line! Seriously, support these guys. They are going to spend an hour helping you find your perfect shoe. Maybe you could save $20 on line and get your shoe next week but so what, who fits you in your shoe next time? Who takes your return? C'mon, it's worth it. These guys are cool. An image of Legendary Eugene Runner Steve Prefontaine greets you on the outside of the store and inside there is other running Pre memorabilia and also from other local runners. The store was a lot smaller than I anticipated, but it is quality over quantity here. The staff have a lot of knowledge about running, walking and feet to help you with what you are looking for. I've always believed that if you are any degree of serious about running, you should be purchasing your shoes, etc. from specialized local (or at least quasi-local) establishments. ERC is this place for Eugene. Unfortunately, it falls quite a bit short of other similar stores that I've visited throughout the years. For starters, the store is incredibly tiny. It is jam-packed with clothes racks and there isn't really room for more than 3-4 people to be trying on shoes at once. The checkout desk is small and the area around it can get congested with just a few people waiting. The service could use some work. It by no means was bad - just not very friendly. And that doesn't mean every employee, either. The clerk who helped me was just not very friendly. He'd ask something and if I didn't know the answer or stumbled trying to articulate something, he'd interrupt with another question or move forward regardless. He also wasn't interested in small talk - at all. Like I said, it wasn't exactly rude... it was just very noticeable and didn't leave the best impression. The selection, for how small the store is, is good. All the top shoe brands and styles you could want. A fair amount of shorts/clothes to browse, as well as a small selection of watches. All in all, I will go back and would recommend it, as well. They know their stuff, and can get you the right pair of shoes for your feet (based on arch-type, pronation, etc.). Students get the added bonus of a nice little 10% discount. There's also lots of great running paraphernalia decorating the walls. read more

Eh. Didn't really rock my socks off. The prices were crazy high and the store is tiny with very limited selection. The salespeople were deep in conversation at the counter and one of them hollered over to me to ask if I needed anything, but didn't leave the social corner of the cash register. I had a great experience here! First visit and purchase, and I'll be back. Personal service--they prep each shoe for you and actually help you with the try-on process, rather than tossing the box at you. You can step outside and try the shoes on pavement. I've got some minor plantar fasciitis, and the sales associate directed me to several shoes that could work. After my feedback on the first couple pairs, she dialed right in on the perfect solution. I love getting my shoes here! They always seem to have the inside scoop on the latest shoes that I can't find elsewhere. One of the employees there called me last Friday to let me know that they had my size in a hard-to-find Nike shoe and should they hold it for me? That's the kind of above and beyond service I always see from them. The owners, Bob and Laura, are great and really support local runners, too, by hiring them in their store. I love that I can go in and have top level athletes and true runners help me fit my shoes. Even as a life-long runner myself, I've had great opinions and suggestions from employees to direct me into shoes I wouldn't have otherwise tried. My other favorite person there is Kathy. I just moved to Eugene and needed a new pair of running shoes. I've been running for over 15 years and usually order my shoes online but I figured I would try out the local running store. I contacted them because I wear a women's 12 and often it isn't in stock. Eugene Running Company told me to "come on in" that they would be "happy to order them for me." When I got to the store, I had a very different experience. I went in and explained the shoe I was looking for, they told me I would have to order it and it would require a deposit. Totally fine! I was happy to do that. I began giving my information and they discouraged me from the color I wanted, explained the shoe may not be in stock in my size anyway, and continued to discourage me. I found the shoe online, in my size, favorite color and in stock! I told them if it was too much trouble, I could order it online. I had hoped to avoid shipping cost and use a gift card and discount card specifically for their store, but rather than trying to convince them to order me shoes, I decided to order them on my own. The other time I went to the store, no one offered to help me even when I waited at the desk. And there was only 1 other person in the store. I am so disappointed. I wanted to join their weekly running groups and become a regular but I will stick to the Nike store in Oakway instead. I visited the Eugene Running Company on the advice of my Podiatrist. We drove up from Grants Pass and were very disappointed. I do have a hard to fit foot but I was still surprised at their extremely limited size options. Unfortunately the sales associate was less than friendly. I wouldn't go as far as saying she was rude but made it quite clear that she wasn't interested in helping me. I honestly don't know what was behind her reluctance but I assume it was because I'm not actually a runner. After this experience we headed north to Gallagher Fitness Resources where I had wonderful service and they had a great selection. Driving 1 hour North was well worth the effort. read more

My experience with this store was satisfactory at first - their size selection was lacking, only going as small as a 9 in most men's shoes, but the service and knowledge of the staff seemed redeeming enough. However, after purchasing a pair of shoes and taking them on a short run, I decided they were too large and clunky for what I was looking for - the attitude I experienced from the staff when trying to return them the next day was very off-putting. I was only given store credit because the shoes were "ruined" (dust on the soles was too extensive to wash off with a little water, apparently - and really, its not like I was trying to scam them, although that was how they treated me) When I decided to exchange them for a pair of shoes $10 cheaper, the manager refused to give me the $10 remainder in cash or store credit. She sited that the store would have to eat the shipping cost in returning the shoes to the distributor, and said that we should just "Call it even" - what if I had decided to purchase a more expensive pair of shoes?? I was really taken aback by this poor sensitivity to customer service. I went to the store because I believe in supporting local businesses and trying on shoes before I purchase them, but after my experience with this store, I will most likely be purchasing my next pair of shoes online, where returns policies and size selection are not an issue, and no one is going to tell you to "call it even" when they still owe you $10. read more

Had a great experience buying new shoes this month. I can't say they have better prices or selection than going online, but I was happy to pay for the service. I got help picking a shoe that would fit not only my running schedule but also my fit preferences and gait. It turns out I was wearing much too small a shoe! They were also happy to order shoes in a size and color they didn't have in stock, let me run along the sidewalk in them... and then exchange them when the weather changed and my feet shrunk a few days later. ERC has stood the test of time - outliving all the other running-specialty shoe stores in the area. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable about running and shoes (many are collegiate and Olympic-caliber runners themselves). There is no other place like it in Eugene - being fitted w/ the proper shoe is imperative - something you can't do when/if ordering on-line. Their prices are a bit below suggested retail but you also get a 10% discount if you're part of a running team, running club, or a student. Shoe selection if great. Clothing selection is limited due to size of store and, I suspect, desire to not use up a lot of capital in a fickle market. Locally owned and operated. ERC goes totally out of its way to support the running community in Lane County - they are everywhere, all the time, helping sponsor races, clinics, teams, and classes. We are from Coos Bay, the hometown of Steve Prefontaine. My wife is an ardent runner, a little over 50, 5' tall and petite. As a runner she supinates, meaning she needs a neutral shoe. We don't have anyplace in our town that caters to her shoe needs. I suggested we stop at ERC in track town USA since they reputedly carry certain Mizunos and Asics shoes for runners like her. We found a couple shoes that we knew could meet her needs and had a bit of a time getting some help. Once we did, she told the young man the two shoes she wanted to try on, in size 6.5. He said they didn't carry women's sizes smaller than 7! We were a little baffled by how that works in a town with so many runners of all ages and sizes. Unbelievable, but true. I was pleasantly greeted when I came in and the salesperson was eager to help. I explained that I wanted to buy shoes made in the USA and he quickly stopped showing me Nikes. He asked questions about what kind of gait I have, but did not ask me any questions about my running history. Perhaps because this is a running store, it was sort of implied. Anyway, when he came back with some shoes, he seemed spaced out and gave me the wrong size and he did not even explain that they didnt have my size in stock until I had the shoes on. He not only knew his products inside and out, but was able to discern foot issues I had (diagnosed by a podiatrist) before I told him about them.
