I have always loved REI, and have been shopping here for many years. Although I hadn't been here in a couple years. I don't know why my husband and I hadn't been in for a while, but after this visit, we'll definitely make it a point to come in more often. My husband and I came in a couple days ago because we were in the area to pick up my mom's car from a body shop. Figured we were only a couple blocks away, let's go visit. So we did. We walked in and started wandering, not really sure what we wanted or needed. We had a couple employees greet us and ask if we needed anything as we wandered. We went upstairs to check out clothes. I was pleasantly surprised to find they've started carrying Lucy brand pants for women. It's a brand I've been in love with for many years. So to find it locally is pretty exciting. I've always driven to the Lucy store at Washington Square in Tigard. Upstairs we were greeted by an employee named Thomas. Let me tell you, this guy knows this store and then some! He's that perfect nerd you want when you have questions, and he's personable too. We chatted for a bit about the company, events they do, and several other things. I found a waterproof Columbia jacket in the women's section, but I wanted one for my husband. So we went looking. We've got a pair of matching Columbia jackets, so I was pretty sure they would be carrying the same one in men's. So I went to hunt down Thomas again. I told him I found a jacket in women's and wanted to know if they had it in men's. I take him over to it, ask him if it's more waterproof than the one I was wearing. He says it's totally waterproof, not just water resistant. He immediately knows where the men's jackets are just like what we had. We both figured a large would be the correct size, but I couldn't find one. Had my husband try on a medium just for shits and giggles. It fit! It looked amazing on him too. Even better. He recommended another brand in the same price range, but ascetically, it didn't look as good. Thomas then talked about how to care for a waterproof jacket. Some people say never wash them (gross, like seriously gross) but that's not the case. Washing it often is what keeps it working correctly. How often is often? My definition of often is weekly. Turns out that's more like constantly. Lol. He said start with monthly. He recommended a special soap, which we'll use on all of our jackets. I usually do one big load of them monthly, so that's perfect. This soap (I'll upload a pic) works for nasty stains, cat pee, and waterproof jackets, where standard soap can clog up the pours of a jacket like that. So anything that requires special attention, this soap is great for. After finding the jacket and learning far more than I ever knew I needed to know, we go down stairs to look again. They had a coupon special thing if you spend $100, you get a $20 gift card to use during a specific time frame. We were already spending $70 or so, so why not? Plus my husband was determined that I needed something in the store too. Not sure why, but who am I to stop him from buying me things? I found North Face gloves I fell in love with. My hands are small, so I've never really found a good, solid pair of gloves that fit my hands without being too big. I despised the ones that have the fingertip thing where you can use your phone with them on, because my fingers never reached that point inside the glove. These fit perfectly, and that won't be a problem ever again. Awesome. I actually was excited about these gloves. We then found the little tie things that attach to jacket zippers, for easy pulling. My mother broke one of hers on a Columbia jacket, and she shakes a lot. So this was actually important to her. I saw these and picked them up to replace hers so she could start wearing that one again. All in all, it was a great trip into the store. I love that they have a great selection of Columbia clothes. I've always been happy with that. But the customer service we got from Thomas was beyond impressive and helpful. My husband actually asked me why we hadn't been in to the store in so many years. So clearly he was impressed as well. I know when it's time to buy more Columbia or Lucy clothes, we'll be going here first. Review 15 of 2017. read more

Let me start out by saying that I love REI. I've been a member for a decade and have been shopping at REI locations for over 20 years. I live very close to their flagship and shop there frequently. This specific REI staff treated my mother and I like we were shoplifters. We were the only non-white people in the store, but they weren't following anyone else. They made us feel unwelcome by talking about where we were shopping over their walky system while we were in earshot and followed us around the store. They took my money (for items I could have purchased on Amazon for 1/2 the cost) and their staff member continued to follow us out of the store even AFTER we made our purchases. If you live in Eugene, shop at the other seven sporting goods stores in town. They may not treat you like a criminal for wanting to give them your hard-earned money. I will be sure to take my business elsewhere the next time I'm in town. read more

While in the area my BF and I stopped into REI to do a little "window shopping" for our next outdoor adventure. The Merchandise: REI always has a great selection of outdoor gear and this one is no exception. Most of the time they feature a few options ranging from beginner through advanced for each type of item. The prices do seem a bit steep, but that's why you get their Co-Op membership and get a percentage of your purchases back each year. The Staff: Employees here are just as friendly as those at my local REI locations in Denver! Several offered us assistance in finding items we were looking for. Now that I know about their rental program I am excited to further my adventures and try some new things in the Eugene area! The Space: Compared to other locations that I have been, this one felt a bit smaller, but it was definitely packed full of a wide variety of merchandise none the less. They def make great use of the space. Given that I don't live in the area; I can't say I'll be back frequently. I recently bought a new REI mountain bike and various components. Today I got my six month "tune up card". I brought my bike in, and mentioned that the derailer barely / sometimes worked, and that the seat post was so lose that it constantly bottomed out and then started turning right or left. This hurt my knees and inner thighs. There was not an ounce of sympathy or regret from the REI staff. If I had personally made, or been a part of such a poorly made machine, I would have apologized. Then I went to REI online, and they also could not care less about my unfortunate situation. "Tough Luck" was their reply. If you want a company that stands behinds their products, don't go to REI. Last time I was in a REI store was in 2018 or beginning of 2019? And the experience I had there was so bad that I went back home and cried until I decided to never again go to any of their stores. Once I moved to my current location, my fiends encouraged me to check out the local place (in Eugene, OR). And it was at a similar level from my last experience. Everyone kept not just misgendering me, but also using the wrong pronouns. And to top it out, all of this was being shouted across the store. Maybe it was an unusual day for everyone, but most of the staff were mean and seemed like they didn't want to interact with me. I was wearing my pin with my pronouns and corrected people and they were still misgendering + using the wrong pronouns. I bought bike and was said that I was going to receive an email with more information for a free tune up, it's been a few months and haven't received anything. For the time I was at the store a staff member sneakily followed me around--maybe they thought I was going to steal something? Until they saw that I was with my friend (a cis-white male) they stopped following me. read more

I really enjoy going into REI. The employees are so knowledgeable about different outdoor gear and my interactions have always made me feel good about my purchases. It's worth it to get the 20$ membership because everything you buy builds points for you to use towards discounts. Their garage sale events they have during the year are really the place to score super marked down high quality items. This store is two stories tall and has everything including bikes, camping gear, shoes, clothing, backpacks etc. Even if you're a beginner outdoorsman or outdoorswoman you will find some great things here. I think the return policy fits within a year but I haven't checked lately. There is a parking lot across the street and street parking so it's easy to access this store. read more

I really love REI. Lets see, where to start. Well they are the ONLY store in Eugene that carry Vibram Fivefingers (Matt LIVES in his Fivefingers and has for sometime now). So that's a pretty big deal. As long as you're a member you can return your items at any time. Even if they have been threw the jungles of Peru and back, they can still be returned. Customer service is in my opinion top notch. Prices can be steep but because of member dividends I am ok with that (Matt bought me a new school backpack with it this year). read more

I had to get my bike tire repaired, and the bike shop employees were incredible. They did some quick maintenance on brakes and the tires without charging, gave me advice for how to maintain it and what I should fix next, and got it done extremely quickly. You can wear those clothes and shoes and if you don't like them, return them. They won't look at the bottom of your shoes and gripe because you actually tried them out! Was incredibly disappointed with the customer service today. The man standing outside monitoring the amount of people coming in the store was so rude to my family. We were a larger group because our children and he made sarcastic and unwanted comments that were very disrespectful. When we finally came out of the store, he noticed and turned to other customers waiting in line and told them that we were the reason they were waiting so long and then continued to make fun of my family to the other customers. You can always shop there, get great service, all the employees are positive smiling and have a great product knowledge. I am usually an REI mega fan. I regularly shop at the Bend location. Over there, they are courteous, experienced, and knowledgeable. I've experienced quite the opposite at the Eugene store. I had the worst encounter w a sales person today. She mis counted my change and when I pointed it out, she wanted to argue that I had already put the dollar in question in my purse. She proceeded to point out that I had other dollar bills in my wallet so i must be wrong and trying to take another dollar. I understand it's only a a little money and i could have simply let it go--but it was humiliating with a full line of people behind me. Besides that, when you walk in the door after saying hello they use a walker talkie to tell sales floor where you are going. I get that maybe this store has a shoplifting problem. But hearing "she's headed upstairs w her kids" is a bit much. Then you are bombarded with staff. It was an exhausting experience. I'll just order online next time. read more

March 14, 2019, stopped by the store to return items and purchase new items. Brought a pair of once worn (inside) bicycle shoes, purchased over a year ago. The manager person told me that "we don't allow refunds on purchase's over a year" " too bad, I won't give you credit for those shoes just because you changed your mind". Nice.... what a horribly rude person. I have been a member since 2008. I love REI, shop at these stores nationwide. Amazing in such a highly educated, sophisticated city like Eugene, Oregon they found this low IQ customer service individual. I did purchase some accessories for my bike, and the bike mechanic person was awesome. She is the reason that REI is a great corporation. Upper management if you read this, send Mr no class, no tact back to customer service training, or better yet, just fire him. Went in with a friend when visiting Eugene, for a very specific item that involves a pretty dorky "sport." The staff directed me to exactly what I needed, and I was shortly on my way. At the check out, they were having a hard time finding me in the system for their loyalty/dividend program. I was totally fine to just pay and not get credit for my purchase, but the clerk insisted she find me in the system.
