Several months later, I returned to this shop with a completely different bike just to see if anything had changed. It hadn't. The experience was every bit as dismissive and condescending as before, almost comically so. One mechanic, wearing a vintage Italian cycling cap like some kind of aging gatekeeper of exclusivity, simply stood by the $450 kits and shoes, glaring at me the entire time. The mechanic assigned to me seemed clueless and uninterested. He took one look at my hardtail fatbike, a perfectly standard setup, and declared it "incompatible" with anything they could offer. It felt less like a technical issue and more like laziness paired with the assumption that I wouldn't be willing to pay for the necessary parts. Eventually, near the end of this awkward standoff, he asked what I'd be willing to spend. I shrugged: "Whatever it takes." That's when, miraculously, he sprang into action! Straight to the computer to search Amazon for the parts he had just said didn't exist. I chuckled, made some polite small talk, thanked him, and walked out, never to return. read more

The woman was really nice when I dropped off my bike and I was looking forward to establishing a relationship. Unfortunately, the man who called the next day gave me a pretty bloated quote for repairs. When I said I just needed it for riding a couple miles back and forth to work he became increasingly inflexible and condescending. So I drove over, picked up my bike, and took it to another shop where they listened to my needs and concerns and completed only what I needed for 2/3 the cost they wanted at Hutch's. read more

Fantastic walk-in service. Was in from out of town for my daughter's U of O camp, had brought my bike with me, and was excited to ride while I had a morning to myself. But when I climbed on for a 30 mile ride from the hotel, my left etap shifter wasn't working and my front break was screaming. Ugh--potential valuable parental day-pass ruined. Quick google search and Hutch's was opening in 5 minutes (and an hour earlier than any other bike shop in town). Actually got a puncture on the two mile ride over to Hutch's! But wow--they dropped what they were working on, super friendly, helpful, and explanatory, and twenty minutes and only $25 dollars later they had me back on the road! Morning saved. They have a range of prices and types of bikes, so there is something for everyone if your budget is above $400. They set me up with a lock and explained the different levels of security to help me make an informed decision. They offered me free tune ups every year, and I'm looking forward to coming back. Drove 6 hours and spent $6300 on a new bike here last Friday, but quickly discovered that it wasn't set up right: Brought it home and at the beginning of the first ride I went to down shift and the derailleur got sucked up into the cassette and was destroyed. Hutch's refused to warranty the part let alone help me. They said that they just "don't give out derailleurs", and that they would not warranty it. Such a shame- I spent $6300 on a bike that wasn't ridable, had to fix it on my own and even pay for the part. It's so crazy that these guys would not even support me with a $50 (wholesale) replacement part. They wanted to charge me $125 to ship it to me but my local shop had it for $79 so I just went with them. If you are thinking of traveling far to buy a bike from Hutch's just because they have it in stock then just keep in mind that it might not be set up correctly (brake line also twisted on new bike), and that they will not help you with setup, warranty or even phone support. I regret buying from Hutch's. I should have just been patient and waited until it was in stock at my local shop. read more

This has to be the best shop in Eugene, hands down! I called in this afternoon with some questions about my bike setup and was told to stop by any time. Upon entering the shop I was greeted immediately and the moment Russ was free he helped me out. He gave me all the info I was looking for in a quick and comprehensible way. Ranging from air pressure in my tires, front fork, rear shock, rebound, brake pads and the list goes on. He hooked me up with some replacement parts for down the road, but stressed I did not need to replace them on the spot. ANNNND he pointed me in the direction of some good local riding! The people there are horrible. Been there 3 times and every time they have tried to upsell me on things I either did not ask for or things that are upset tingly overpriced. They seem to think that they are the sole authority on what you should want. It's not just that they sell expensive products. That's normal. They sell products way above what you'd find online for the exact same model. They think you're an absolute fool that will pay for anything they say you need. I was there trying to get cables, which should be like a 50 bucks or under job and they tried to talk me up to things I didn't ask for. Like trueing wheels and replacing hardware completely unrelated to what I was asking for. My wheels weren't even warped to a degree that they couldn't work on it. When I said I didn't need the things they tried to argue with me and tell me what I needed and said it was related to the repair. I also saw a couple, seemingly new to the sport getting talked into buying a 2 year old carbon bike that has since been replaced at near MSRP. Absolute crooks read more

This place is great - I walked in off the street with a flat tire, and was out in less than 20 minutes for less than $20. 10/10.

These guys are great - always friendly and helpful. I'm embarrassed to say how much I love that when I go in for air in my tires, someone always offers to do it for me - like, immediately. Last time I was in, they got my quick-release brake re-situated and made a few other minor repairs they noticed needed doing - all free of charge. I bought my bike from them when I moved here 14 years ago; it's a workhorse and still going strong after many, many miles. Hooray for Hutch's! read more

I first encountered Hutch's in Bend, when I destroyed the rear end of my Hardtail mountain bike. They went through the whole thing and gave me a list of parts and labor, but could not get to it while I was in Bend. So I was happy to find another Hutch's in Eugene when I got home. They finished it earlier than promised, and I think it's the best condition the bike has ever been in. First time purchasing a mysterious, used bicycle and bringing it to a shop for professional tune up. I was nervous about being overcharged due to my lack of knowledge and experience. They didn't charge for the inspection & quote. They called to tell me it was ready for pick up much sooner than the date promised. To top it off, they quoted me repairs that could possibly total $200, and I only paid $100 because some of the repairs were ultimately unnecessary. I came in just needing some air in my tires- the air is self-serve and free, and a kind employee taught me how to use their compressor device. I really know next to nothing about bicycle maintenance, and the staff was so helpful (and non-judgmental!) in getting me back on the road. My friend needed some expert advise on her older townie bike. She rides 5 days a week and has really been putting on the miles. She had already spent a couple hundred dollars in another shop changing out some components and it still wasn't shifting correctly. One of the mechanics "Q" took a look and had an answer for the issue. Unfortunately the parts were not available at their shop. So Q called another shop and drove over to pick up the part and installed the new front derailer and while testing it noticed another issue with the left shifter and repaired that also. They are open on Sundays while others shops are closed and the location near an amazing public library and unique restaurants can't be beat. A couple of months ago there was an unfortunate incident in which Hutch's Bike Shop was burglarized and a substantial amount of inventory was stolen. I was solicited by a female the morning after the theft about purchasing a bike from her. It was a good deal and I bought it, subsequently it came to light that the bike was part of the theft the night before. The police were notified and I went beyond just calling the police. I dropped everything and over the course of about one full day I went undercover and put myself in harms way to help Hutch's retrieve their property. Directly through my involvement 7 bikes were recovered. I was out the money I used to purchase the first bike and out for my time. I went to the shop to introduce myself to the owner and I didn't even get a thank you. In fact,he made me feel like I was a low life. I am still so mad that I even bothered to help him. I might have been ok without a reward or some kind of compensation, but the way he treated me was ugly. I do not feel bad for his loss anymore. He was a self-centered and ungrateful man. read more

I find most guys and gals that work at bike shops are generally pretty cool. But my encounter today with Austin at Hutch's put him and this shop on another planet. Here's my story. I just bought a new bike in Portland and got my first flat here in Eugene. I have an average mechanical ability but for the life of me, I could not pull the tire back over the rim. Putting every inch of pride aside, I went into this shop with my tire half pulled over the rim and confessed I'd been trying to get it back for an hour. Austin was anything but condensing (when he had an excellent reason to be) and not only helped me fix the tire but then had me do it myself, so I knew. He was so absolutely cool in the way he handled me and my silly little problem. I found my bike store from now and forever. read more

Every time I go in whether it's for a new bike or a tiny part for my bike pump, with my kids or solo, the folks at Hutch's consistently solve any bike problem that I throw their way. Went with a buddy to get his bike looked at because it had been sitting for a while. The guy working in the repair area greeted us with a "what do you want?" We explained and he said to bring it in. When we brought the bike in, we were greeted by a girl at the front. My friend said he wanted a quick tune up. She responded with a sarcastic "quick?" and an unfriendly "go to the back". We decided that our money be better spent supporting friendly businesses and sought the assistance of the next closest bike shop. We will not return. read more

Hutch's is the absolute BEST! They saved my vacation. I arrived in Eugene on Amtrak with a busted bike and a tight schedule, hoping to take off on a 10-day bikepacking trip the following day. I desperately called around to several bike shops in Eugene looking for one that could fix my bike at short notice, and none of them were able to help... except for Hutch's! They were slammed that Saturday, but they managed to make time for my bike amidst the chaos. I loved seeing how warm and welcoming they were to their customers, who came in with all kinds of bike issues and varying knowledge of bikes. As a woman I am used to getting talked down to at bike shops, but I felt 100% respect coming from these folks. Russ was the mechanic who worked on my bike, and he went above and beyond. He not only diagnosed the issue with my bike and turned it around in less than an hour, but he also reviewed my bike route and gave me a ton of super helpful tips. The cost of parts and labor was super reasonable, and if I didn't have limited packing space I would have been tempted to buy a lot more stuff - They had a great selection of bike accessories, tools, maps, etc. IMO Hutch's is the best bike shop in Eugene, and you should absolutely go to them! read more

I'm surprised there are no other reviews for Hutch's. The store is well designed. It's bright and open and inviting. They have a giant merry-go-round of bikes in the front window. You can slowly guide it around and browse bikes. Now, these are not your Target store bikes - by brand or price. The staff guy that helped me was working there for many years and knew bikes way above what I needed. I got a sweet ride there and they added the accessories that I wanted quickly. I had a pair of Sram Red shifters needing new cables, which I had struggled with in the past. Deciding to look for professional assistance, not wanting to struggle again, I called Hutch's and they said to bring them on down. After about 30 they were done. When it came time to pay, they advised me it was free. FREE!!! Things like this don't happen, right? Since moving here 3 years ago, Hutch's has been my go to shop. I'll first say that the crew at hutchs is fantastic, when it comes to their knowledge of bikes and related things. I'm not always sure their people skills are as good as could be.... but I think we are all guilty of that claim, from time to time. I've been going here since I got my first bmx bike, as a youngster. The feeling of the store remains the same, though many faces have changed. Len is an absolutely great guy to deal with. I've had soooo many great experiences with the staff here that I loose track of the not so good. Whether they've helped me out on a used mtn bike, sold me a new road bike, or offered parts/training advice... I've been treated really well. I have however experienced an occasionally flippant attitude from some of the folks here, as have a few friends I've sent here for service. The simplest way I can think to describe it is that there's been a few times where the attitude was one (on the service end) of superiority--almost as though I wasn't spending enough money to be bothered with. Now I'll freely admit that It may have been that those individuals weren't even aware of their attitude, and/or that I was being a whiny bish?? Who knows. But when I and others I know have had the same exact experience, perhaps it is the staff who's to blame. Either way... I've had so many good experiences that I don't even bother going elsewhere. I don't know who's there these days, but I can say that Len, John, len's daughter, Darren, and a few others have always been humble and pure class. F those other punks. There's clearly a reason they no longer work there. As long as you go into this establishment with a good attitude and reasonable expectations... I think you'll always be happy with their service. Keep in mind that this is a very busy shop, and that you won't alway be at the front of the line. They service lots of guys who race on a very high level, as well as folks who found a bike in the river and want a complete service. I've seen it all there now. Four thumbs up for hutchs! read more

I highly recommend this bicycle shop! I recently Broke the rear derailleur hanger on my new Specialized Roubaix. Jason called several other bike shops to locate a replacement, however the part was new enough no one had the hanger in stock. I am on a timeline to start a ride in Washington and didn't have the luxury of ordering the hanger and waiting for its arrival. Hutch's proceeded to remove the hanger from a floor model, and sell it to me. I can not thank Hutch's enough for going above and beyond and keeping me on schedule. read more

This is my go to bike shop. Bought a fairly expensive carbon bike awhile back. After many yrs of riding it, I noticed a small crack line on the frame. It was hard to tell if the crack was just superficial or deeper. Later I was at another bike shop with a friend who was buying something here. I had the two guys there look at small crack to see if it's something I needed to worry about. They both concluded that it looked superficial and should be fine. About a month later I was at Hutches to buy a tire and showed Len the crack. Without a hesitation he recommend exchanging to a new frame just in case at no charge.... I was very pleased. That's why hutches has my loyalty. I can buy anything bike related online or other bike shops, but the peace of mind knowing that they will take great care of me is worth taking my business there every time. read more

I stopped there to look for a new rear wheel. They were out of this specific one, so he called around to find me one. While he was on the phone, the mechanic looked at the wheel I brought in and told me it could be fixed cheaper than buying a new one. He said it would be done the next day, but two hours later I get a call saying it was done. I was pleasantly surprised! As a touring cyclist, I fret about my bike a lot. I was passing through Eugene and dropped into Hutch's to buy some electrolyte tablets and to have my chain cleaned. They sold me the tablets at a very reasonable price, and really surprised me by not charging me at all for cleaning the chain and replacing a handlebar endcap that had fallen off somewhere on the road. Lots of places would have charged at least five dollars for the labour. They even let me stash my bike in the shop for about an hour while I went to get some lunch nearby, after warning me about Eugene's bike thieves. Very friendly staff. Any touring cyclist in need of a pit stop should stop here for help. read more

Location, service, and staff here are top notch. Prices are higher, but only due to the higher level of equipment and service they offer to customers who expect quality and longevity from their purchase. Service before the sale was very good, not great (my only complaint is that I, being young and not having an "I'm swim in a lake of money" kind of appearance, had to track someone down to answer my questions about road bikes) but they earned that star back after I purchased a bicycle. The staff really takes care of you when you become a customer. All members of their staff seem to be experienced bikers. John, who is extremely knowledgeable, set the new bike up according to my specifications. When I arrived to pick it up he had it up on a stationary training mechanism and had me ride there in the store while he observed and asked a lot of questions about my comfort and position on the bike. He then made several more adjustments to maximize my riding comfort and enjoyment and fielded many questions from me about potential routes, the road biking community, etc. and was very personable and patient. Best of all the staff invited me to return any time to have the bike fine tuned to my riding preferences and for any other reason. I saw several other people come in for just this reason--some with bikes that looked to have been purchased there years ago--and they gladly made adjustments for them, had a friendly chat, and got them back out on the road quickly. Very impressive. They gave me a very reasonable deal on the excellent equipment I purchased, did not pressure me to buy anything at any point before or after the sale, and I'm confident they will take great care of me after the sale. Great experience. I highly recommend Hitch's if you are looking for a quality product and shop experience. Well done.
