(Kari's Rating 8/10) The seating is open concept almost like a living room, but a very modern well decorated house. It felt like we were in Michelle Obama's living room. We got seated and got our drinks right away, the In Bloom was delicious. It was very citrusy for an aperol spritz twist and I don't even like aperol. First course was celery root salad, which was light, creamy dressing with ricotta and endive. The pickled vegetables gave a contrast to the olive oil draped ricotta finishing off with a crunchy nut topper. Second course was a celery root soup that had a light cinnamon, almost kind of sweet flavor. It was just the right temperature and the bread was light and fluffy almost like a Hawaiian roll, but more distinguished, like it had been to grad school. My favorite course was the Sturgeon. It was covered in a very light mushroom, pesto sauce with fried parsnips on top. The texture worked really well together, and I definitely could've eaten a whole plate of this! Next course was the Wagyu, which I was personally looking forward to the most. Most of the times I've had Wagyu it has been thinly sliced, but this Wagyu was almost a 2 x 2 square. I found the Wagyu a little bit too rich as the fat cap was a little bit overwhelming compared to the density of the meat. My girlfriend's absolutely loved it though, so I gave the rest of mine to them. Because we came for a restaurant week, most of the menu was pre-ordered, but they did read off a truffle mushroom pasta special, which we also ordered three plates of. The kitchen did make a slight mistake and they forgot to bring out the pasta until the last course, but it was definitely worth the wait. A serving size was about four ravioli and we got three plates so it was relatively a smaller pasta dish. You could tell it was homemade as the pasta density was al dente. It came with a very light lemon cream pesto sauce. The truffle was slightly overpowering, as it was both inside the ravioli and on top of it, but I had a nice contrast with the crunchy truffle topper. We had all three desserts, the tiramisu, the coconut cream cake, as well as the sticky date cake. I personally believe and best dessert was the coconut cake. I had a very light fruity gelato, but the bottom was a heavier coconut cake with a sesame garnish. The added mint on top was the perfect decor. The tiramisu is relatively average, but it came in a fancy box with a rice paper design that you had to smash through, which is very Michelin star. The sticky date cake wasn't too much to write home about as it was a little bit dry but the gelato on top evened it out. Overall, I would give this place an 8/10 as I probably wouldn't come out of my way from River North to eat here. This place is really good for groups, and the servers were very attentive. The tables the modern, looked like revamped picnic tables. I think it was a little bit pricey for what we got, but everyone left relatively full. Thank you for having us!

Restaurant Week Review - Ambiance - modern, cozy, lightening was spot on (not too bright and didn't feel too dim) Service - exceptional, server was super attentive, given that it was a restaurant week menu they automatically charge 22% for service Food - soup (the added granola and raisin/cranberry felt really off balance), sturgeon was fishy, and the beet mole with the Wagyu didn't really pair well together

This review is specifically for Esmé's Restaurant Week tasting menu, not their regular tasting. I've heard the full tasting is stronger, but unfortunately the Restaurant Week menu didn't quite land for us. We came to celebrate my dad's birthday and brought a cake, but no one offered to refrigerate it and the interaction made us feel a bit awkward about bringing our own dessert. Because of that, we ended up ordering dessert there and taking our cake home. The Restaurant Week menu included a salad, soup, fish course, and beef course. Dessert was not included. While the food was hit or miss, the presentation throughout the meal was thoughtful, and the dining space itself is beautiful and well designed. The salad course was surprising. There were four of us and only two salads brought out to share, which felt odd for a per-person tasting menu. The salad had many crouton pieces and not much leafy greens or veggies and lacked flavor. The soup was one of the better courses. It was creamy and flavorful, though the bread seemed a bit stale and the granola topping felt unnecessary. For the sturgeon course, my piece was cooked well, but my mom's was tougher, so execution felt inconsistent. The Normandy sauce was good on its own but didn't fully come together with the fish. The Wagyu course was tender but not particularly memorable flavor-wise. We added the off-menu pesto pasta, which ended up being one of the highlights. The pasta was al dente and the sauce was well balanced. For dessert, we ordered the tiramisu and coconut cake. The tiramisu had a creative presentation but was overly sweet and lacked the light texture you'd expect. The coconut cake was decent, especially with the passion fruit and guava sorbet to balance the sweetness. Overall, while this is a discounted Restaurant Week experience, the menu felt a bit disjointed and the flavors didn't always come together.

Esmé, consistently One of Our Favorites in Chicago We went to Esmé last night on a Monday and were pleasantly surprised to see both an event happening in the bar and a solid number of diners in the dining room. Not many Michelin starred restaurants can pull that off on a Monday, but Esmé always seems to have energy. This place has become one of our most reliable favorites. They change the menu a few times a year in conjunction with rotating local artists, and the restaurant itself feels more like a refined art gallery than a traditional dining room with white walls, clean lines, simple and elegant. Last night was no exception to their usual excellence. The experience is really anchored by Chris Gerber, a longtime Chicago hospitality pro, and his team. They are flawless. This is true hospitality in every sense of the word. They usually keep two signature dishes, and for good reason. The caviar supplement sounds odd on paper, but in your mouth it is absolute perfection. The cod sounds simple, but it is anything but, rich, decadent, and always one of the highlights. Everything new on this menu was also outstanding. Every course had beautifully balanced sauces that made sense with the dish, and the presentations were creative without being gimmicky or over the top. The plating always ties in with the featured artist in a way that feels thoughtful, not forced. One tip. Be careful when choosing your beverage pairing. We did not read closely enough and ended up with the more inventive pairing that included cocktails and a beer. It was fun, but afterward we wished we had gone with the higher end wine pairing instead. Bottom line. Esmé remains one of the most consistent Michelin starred experiences in Chicago. It is not just very good. It is reliably excellent every single time.

Perfect spot for date night with innovative and creative flavors! Drinks were also amazing! They are able to accommodate dietary restrictions such as vegetarian we loved everything we ordered. Do not skip on the tiramisu dessert - the masterpiece is edible!

I was very thankful that Esme extended their restaurant week menu, and I was able to try this place. I probably would not have gone here otherwise only because usually it is way beyond my dining budget. It was also my birthday weekend, and I was in the Chicago area. We had reservations for 5:00 and showed up a bit early. I was nervous we would have to wait outside in the cold, but they still let us in. Side note, enter on the main street. Our gps took us behind the back alley. The decor is very sleek, simple, and clean. The utensils are very unique, especially the thin knives and three-tined forks. The food was not only unique and creative but also a whole experience, and that's really what you're there for. The salad was deconstructed and balanced between tart and spiced. The soup was one of the best soups, and I never expected granola to pair so well with a soup. The fish was a little salty but rich and flaky. The beef was tender and savory. The four courses are a little on the small side, so we ordered dessert. This was my favorite. It was a tiramisu piece of artwork that you could break and eat. They also gave me a candle with it because it was my birthday. The customer service is great. Multiple servers wished me happy birthday and their pacing between courses was very on point. What a special dining experience this was!

It was our first time going to Esme. It has been our bucket list of spots to try downtown. It was well worth the price tag! Our server Carlos did an amazing job explaining each dish. The food is for sure well thought out and a wonderful blast of flavors. I would for sure be bringing my partner here for a special occasion soon to try their new menus! The restaurant for menu is very modern chic! We loved the art and the style.

What a time! What a breath of fresh air. I love a curated drink pairing event. And this one blew me away. I was invited to a MUTHAship event here with a Chicago curator and had a wonderful experience. I don't drink red wine but I drank and drank. Michelin star me every time, I don't mind the cost!

My goal is to try 50 new Chicago restaurants in 2025! Restaurant: 12/50 Month tried: February Favorite dish: Flaming hot Cheeto; caviar I've been to Bar Esme next door, but we finally tried the dining room during restaurant week. I know restaurant week is NOT an accurate snapshot of the normal experience! But when a tasting menu is this expensive, you gotta do what you gotta do. First of all, the decor is beautiful and the rotating art method is fantastic. The space is very welcoming and interesting. Service was great as well. The food is great, no doubt about it. The flaming hot Cheeto is the most fun food experience I had had in a while. We upgraded to include the caviar course, as that is a signature dish from their regular tasting menu, and it was well worth it. We were nearly licking the bowl. Outside of that, the food was great but nothing absolutely astounding. I don't feel that I need to come back and pay for the full experience, which is a bummer because I was hoping this visit would make me excited to return and willing to pay full price.

The best one- truffle blossom. Tasting of truffled cocktails

Andrew- the bartender was amazing. He whipped up a tasting menu for truffled alcohol on the spot. And it was amazing! He told me he is inspired by baking shows but let me tell you Despite bake off reference not a single drink had a boring combo! My favorite was truffle blossom- ask him about it! The food is work of art- truly. Pate was buttery melt in your mouth amazing and the brioche was to die for. The main course was sunchoke pasta and oh my! Everything here was amazing. No stuffiness pure art and food. Highly recommend!

Came here for the restaurant week so may not be the typical representation of it. Nice ambience and staff. Huge hot Cheeto: great representation of the Cheeto you know. Kinda messy to eat as well Braised endive salad: I didn't like the flavor and I don't even remember any of the flavor now Basil foie Gras: texture is great but I can barely taste the basil sauce. Flavor's quite lack. Could've been an interesting combination Burnt maple: small portion but interesting way to prep the mashed potato. Soup is good flavor. Trout: great texture again. Quite tender. However the flavor is still on the bland side Pithivier: good idea using the beef Wellington style. Short rib meat is again amazing texture. With the more tough texture added by the sausage. The soft wrapping could be crispier and made it better. Probably the strongest flavored dish of the night. Mandarin granita: icy watery dessert with lots of texture and flavor. Interesting idea but just another dish has more emphasis on the idea not the flavor Overall, 4 star on food, 4 star on service, but with the price, it has to drop

While I appreciate the concept, this dining experience didn't resonate with my husband and I. The service, plating and decor were all fine, but I found the experience to be impersonal (unless the point is to feel distant and on your own?) and hoped for more depth in the food flavors. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy the taste of the items we ordered. At this price point, I expect dishes to taste dynamic and delicious. My cocktail was phenomenal though, but unfortunately I wouldn't return for just the cocktail. Has anyone else had this opinion?

A beautiful experience that covers more than food and drink, but also art, pottery, and craftsmanship. The restaurant doubles as an art gallery showcasing a rotation of artists. The food is extremely creative, and the flavours almost always hit the mark. The service is smooth, funny and friendly, and definitely worthy of their star.

A Basque octopus appetizer was clever and flavorful, if a bit salty. Roast chicken was also notably salty, and it lacked the roasty character we expect from this bistro standard. Poached monkfish was tender and tangy, but also a bit salty. The couple of wines we had were interesting, especially an excellent dry sparkling rose, which was quite dry and refreshing. For dessert, a souffle was just meh. The ambiance and hospitality were notable. The food was inventive and generally OK (except for the saltiness). We're not sure we'll return.
