Rude and Unprofessional I had my hair cut with Ken after work. I have showed him two pictures, one with how I wanted my fringe to look like, one with how I wanted with the length. The whole conversation went on for less than two mins, pretty simple and straight forward. When Ken started working on my hair, I asked if he is going to cut it the way we had talked about (just trying to get some confirmation). He stopped and LOUDLY replied "You said you wanted it this way, right? MAKE UP YOUR MIND!!! You showed me 3 pics, you want it this way, you want it that way, now which way do you want??!!!" I was really taken back as I was never picky with my hair, therefore never expecting him to be this rude and make a WHOLE scene out of my ONLY question. The other hairdresser and her costumer were also looking over. It made me felt really uncomfortable. After Ken went back with cutting, I asked him "what three pics you said I showed you? I believe there was only two." Ken couldn't recall the "third pic", while barely describing the style of my only two pics. Unhygienic The hairbrushes Ken used on my hair were both covered and tangled with curly Blond/Brunette hair from previous customers. There were also many other improper things happened during the service. E.g. Ken telling me to OPEN MY EYES when he was spraying and "teaching" me how to style my hair. No, I DIDN'T ask him to teach me. As well as not being bothered to block the water for my ears during the hair wash, so my ears were literally filled with water. I won't go into details here for the sake of space. I still thanked him in the end and tipped, only because that's the decent thing to do. But I won't be wasting any more money or my time here at Ergo. If you are under the age of 40, care about hygiene and don't want to get patronized or treated with condescension, please consider spend your money somewhere else. I don't believe they will treat a middle-aged woman the same way they treated me. it's a shame because everyone deserves respect no matter what, especially your paying customers. read more

Ok, we all know I go to A LOT of salons. That's just how I roll... Bill (one of the owners at Ergo Salon) gave me one of the BEST haircuts I've ever gotten about 8 weeks ago. He's intuitive. It's like he hears my hair talking to him. 8 weeks and I'm not itching to hack off my hair? Magical. Go to him. He's also very nice to talk to. I might even go back a second time. I know, I know...I've said this before, but I mean it. Rarely do I walk out of a salon already liking the way my hair looks, and that was the feeling achieved. Remarkable. They gave me hand sanitizer and took my temperature when I came in. Inside there was distancing and barriers in place. My pedicure was amazing. I was here to get my eyebrows done (after a long five months of planning to get them done and never actually doing it). I called for an appointment around 10:45 and was offered my choice of three appointment times that day. I chose 11:45. I rarely go to salons - I usually get my eyebrows done in Argyle in basically a glorified barber shop - and I was a little unsure of the etiquette upon entering. The lady at the counter was a little brusque, and I saw completely different treatment from them to a regular who came in right behind me. (I didn't get offered tea! I was thirsty too!) The lady who did my eyebrows was a few minutes late for my appointment, and she took me to the back where we exchanged less than ten words, my eyebrows were done in five minutes, and they look great and perfectly symmetrical. Honestly, I like that kind of treatment - I don't want to talk, I want my eyebrows returned to some state of order. I would have given the eyebrow wax itself 4 stars, possibly even 5. I just don't enjoy being treated like a second-class customer when I'm paying $19 (including tip) for a wax. read more

ZERO STARS. Came here for a Brazilian wax. Long story short: HORRIBLE experience, will NEVER be coming back. I've been getting waxed for years now at multiple locations in Evanston and Chicago, and I have NEVER had an experience this bad. The salon itself is cute and clean, receptionist friendly. Location is fine, in downtown Evanston. The wax itself was HORRIBLE. I was with Olga (I presume). First signs of trouble: when we walked into the waxing room, she stayed in there while I undressed. Awkward and unusual, but not a big deal. The real trouble came when she started waxing. She used the SAME STICK AND THE SAME STRIP FOR MY ENTIRE WAX. If you've ever had a Brazilian, you're probably cringing right now. Not only was it extremely painful, it is very unsanitary. I was watching in horror the entire time as she literally waxed me with my own hair and old wax. A thing of nightmares. In the end, it wasn't even a good wax. She missed spots, left stray hairs everywhere (I went home and tried to tweeze some of them, it was that bad), and gave me some horrendously inflamed ingrown hairs as a final goodbye. I'm still recovering from that horrible wax. read more

Reyna is my forever stylist as long as I live here, till death do us part. Moved here from San Fran. New York before that. Both places, it took me a long time to find someone who could cut my hair. Problem was so many wanted to convince me I had to have short hair to have volume. Turns out it's not true. I've been in Chicago 7 yrs now. Upon dealing with the task of finding a new stylist, I once again heard the same old, same old. One time I even got so fed up I chopped it all off to donate to Locks of Love. On a whim, and truthfully not expecting much, I found myself at Ergo last August needing a trim. To my wonderous eyes what did appear??? Long hair with volume to spare!!! All thanks to Reyna. I am so exited about my recent visit to Ergo Salon and Spa in Evanston il. I got my eyebrows and bikini wax beautifully done by Anetka. I've never had wax done before, therefore I wasn't sure what to expect. Going into that process I was very scared and...... embarrassed. I have shared my thoughts and concerns with Anetka and she explained to me step by step (with patience) how the entire process will look like. Almost right the way I felt relieved. Anetka is very professional, frendley and informative. She seems to love end enjoy her work. She's a Really Good Cosmetologist. I have gotten my haircut twice by Dena. She is extremely knowledgable and easy to work with. At $50 for cut/blowdry, I am a fan! She knows how to work with my flat, Asian hair, and gives it lots of texture and body! Experience-wise, the front desk could be a little more professional, and they don't offer you water/tea/a warm neck pillow like high end places. But my appointment was on time, and the space is clean...and at the end of the day, it is far more important to leave with great hair! read more

Got a haircut recently. Meh. Same day appointment, didn't have to wait once I got there. The ambiance of the salon is decent and they have cookies and coffee up front. Was in and out in 15 minutes (!!) and paid $44: $40 for a women's wash and cut, 10% student discount, $8 tip. (NOTE: you can't charge tip on a card, so bring cash.) I was scheduled for a cut only and asked after a blowdry afterward because I didn't feel like going out with wet hair, but the stylist (Georgia?) told me somewhat apologetically that she didn't have time. Does that mean that I was only allotted 15 minutes for my appointment?? Anyway, she offered to stick me under a dryer instead but I said it was okay, paid and left. Aside from the dubious customer service, I was not especially excited with the cut, which was kind of unflattering and awkward in the front, but mostly just plain boring. I guess it's also my fault for not knowing *exactly* what I wanted. The stylist took my minimum requests a bit too literally, I think. I went home and snipped a bit more off myself. On the plus side, I really liked that there were mirrors when I was getting my hair washed. Is that weird? Because... I like it. read more

I've been going to Dina every six weeks since my original review and am extremely happy every time I leave the salon. She does a fantastic job with the color and color! ($85) I've also been getting my brows waxed (by both Raina and Anetka) and they both do a fantastic job. ($15) In fact, every person I've interacted with at Ergo is friendly and accommodating. Yes, the salon is often busy, but I believe that's a sign of their great service. I've become a "regular" and have grown to appreciate the friendly camaraderie of the stylists and owners - you can see that that they all clearly enjoy their jobs. In the past, I've avoided getting my hair done as long as possible bc I dreaded the time it took and the experience never lived up to my expectations. I have strawberry red hair that I've been getting colored auburn. I'm trying to get back to my natural color using blonde highlights to blend my roots. I got A LOT of blonde put in today so not sure yet if it suits me. Prices are good, 25% for new clients and they didn't make me print the coupon off the website which I appreciate. Great hair salon in Evanston. Friendly staff took my boyfriend as a walk-in and gave him a great haircut! He was really happy with it. They give 25% off your first visit at 20% off your next visit. I got a brazilian wax and wasn't too happy with it. Even though it was 20% off, I would rather pay more to have a more pleasant experience. She gave me no privacy when preparing. Busy holiday season, parties left and right, unrelenting work deadlines..what's a girl in need of a blow out to do? Make a quick stop at Ergo, that's what. Between a crazy work pace, numerous holiday parties, happy hours, and get-togethers, I barely had energy to sparkle and look festive, let alone deal with my hair. Not to mention, sub-zero Chicago temps and allowing hair to air dry don't mix, especially when time is at a premium. It's always so much easier to have someone do your hair for you, but there was no way I could get to my regular salon during the work day, so I took a friend's recommendation and called Ergo. So glad I did! Gia gave me a great, and I do mean great, round-brush blow out, which left me looking sleek, party ready, and not having to deal with my hair for a few days. I was in and out in under an hour, and didn't pay an arm and a leg for it. I still love my main salon, but, on those days when I need to be pampered from the neck up, and don't want to venture far from the office, Ergo will be my go-to salon. read more

This salon sees a lot of traffic--it was hopping on the Friday afternoon I was there, with at least 15 women walking through the door in the hour I was there. As busy as it was, they were able to schedule me for two services on the day before I went. I had my eyebrows waxed and the esthetician did a nice job, but took a bit longer than I'm used to. I also had a manicure by the same staff person--she did an excellent job. My complaints are directed to three main areas: 1. the space is limited in this salon and spa--it seems very cramped and not at all relaxing. i probably would not come here for a massage for that reason. 2. front desk staff were not especially friendly or helpful, and were talking amongst themselves while checking me in and when I paid. 3. it was more expensive than expected. While not Elizabeth Arden prices, the services are definitely priced at a high mid-level, to high-level salon, without having the feel of such a salon. I might consider getting a haircut here, as others seem to have had a good experience, but other than that, i don't know that its worth it. read more

I went to Ergo for my wedding, and was pretty pleased with the overall experience. They were very nice about scheduling all my girls for this and that, and were not over the top wedding crazy (read: not uber expensive just because it happens to be a wedding!) Reyna was my stylist and she was great, I was very pleased with the look she gave me. She did my makeup too and it was beautiful. Perfect for the wedding day, even though I never wear makeup. The manicurist (I forget her name) was very nice, she took her time and painted on 3 different color combos on my fingers to let me choose the exact shade I wanted, that has never happened to me before! She was also conversational with me talking about her upcoming wedding, it was fun :) A week before the wedding, I also got a brazilian (ouch!) and a 60-minute massage. It was my first brazilian so I can't really review that aspect but I was pleased with the result! The massage was very nice too, but not the best I've ever had. That could have been my fault though for not speaking up. I absolutely recommend this salon for the low-key bride who does not want a circus salon experience!! read more

Great service and haircut! I have really fine hair and have had difficulty finding a good hairstylist. It often ends in blunt cuts and too short bangs. I dropped in to make a reservation, but it turned out that they had openings, which was pleasantly convenient. Lise gave me a great cut; I wanted to add more layers, bangs, and thin out the thickness that had accumulated throughout winter. She did everything I asked for perfectly, and I was very satisfied with the cut! Additionally, there was 25% off for first-time customers. The staff was so friendly & nice!! Unfortunately this was not a great wax experience. I was not offered a towel, sheet or anything else to cover myself with when changing. The esthetician declared the wax was too hot & proceeded to blow on it to help it cool down, multiple times, which makes me worried about sanitation. It's my fault for not saying something about these things during the appointment but I was too uncomfortable to do so at the time. Hoping some of these practices improve because everyone was so nice & I wish I could rate it more highly. read more

Ergo Salon is the best salon I've been to yet. As a curly haired woman, I've always had trouble finding someone who knows how to actually cut curly hair without messing it up. After dying my hair, having it fall out, and losing the beauty of my long curls, I discovered Ergo. Yaniesy fixed my hair. She is sweet, beautiful, and not only listens to what one wants in regards to hair preferences but she has an innate knowledge of what's best for someone's hair. My curly hair is back to being healthy, super thick, and silky. I will only go to Yaniesy for hair cuts from now on. The service at Ergo is great. It's clean, everyone is friendly, and you leave feeling confident. Ask for Yaniesy every time! She will NOT disappoint. read more

Bill is one of the best in the business. He has a comprehensive understanding of hair, and peppers you with questions to make sure he's giving you exactly what you want. He owns the business with one of the other stylists, so he has a strong interest in giving you the best customer experience and having you refer others. I've been to a bunch of barber shops, in Evanston and elsewhere. You pay $10 more for a cut from Bill (vs. a barber), but I wholeheartedly think it's worth it. read more

He was very quick but thorough at the same time. A very nice person to chat with as well. The salon was very relaxing and friendly. Sheri is a miracle worker. I have been seeing her on and off for several years (I lived out of town). About two months before my wedding, I went to a different salon at the recommendation of a friend and got a horribly botched color job. I then went to see Sheri who managed to rescue my hair and I have gotten so many compliments on the color job she did. If you want beautiful, natural-looking hair color, I truly believe Sheri is the best in this area (and for a reasonable price)! read more

I recently went to Ergo Salon to get a haircut after being recommended to go there by a friend. I was pleasantly surprised by the actual outcome since I wanted to do something different, and the hair stylist was helpful in suggesting options and sticking to any guidelines I had. The location is easy to get to, but quite small. It was fairly busy when I went and I found out that Fridays and Saturdays are quite busy for them, so try to avoid those crazy days. They also offer treatment for nails, massages and skin treatment, and all types of hair treatment. It does get a bit pricey so if you're just looking to get a trim probably try somewhere else. read more

I know I'm just gilding the lily here, but all the glowing things others have written goes double for me! I've been going to Ergo since 2005 (Bill), and I've also used Dena, Margaret, and Hamida, with input from Sheri and Reyna! I am known for being EXTREMELY picky (read OCD anal-Virgo here!) but even though Bill teases me about needing medication before I come in, he has never been anything but incredibly intuitive, and accommodating, not to mention brilliant, about all of my hair incarnations (long to short to long, red to blond to dark and now back to auburn, curly and straight!) My husband started with Bill, but now goes to Ken, and has loved the cuts they've both been giving him for the past 7+ years. I recently had the Keratin straightening treatment done by Dena, and I can't express how much I luh-HUV it! Truly, there isn't anything that I've wanted or needed done, that Ergo didn't do for me with amazing results! The fact that I'm constantly being asked "Who does your hair? Can I get their name and number?" is testament to their expertise :)) P.S. I completely agree with the other reviewers regarding the ambience of Ergo - it's small and friendly, always clean and neat, yet hip and chic, too. I have always found the receptionists to be friendly and polite. Because this is such a laid-back place, all of the people who work here seem to have great relationships with each other, so if some patrons saw them "talking to each other", I hardly think that's a reason to feel slighted or under served ;) read more

This place was a lot cheaper than most salons-which i thought was great...but my haircut wasn't what i wanted. I am actually going to go get it redone. Quite possibly could have been a new client special as I have seen other Yelpers! post, not sure nothing was said when I checked out. Now I have gotten spectacular color for over double that at other salons, but that isn't what I was looking for today. I needed something budget friendly and Reyna did a great job.
