First, some context: I Just finished my second round of cancer treatment a couple of months ago. The radiation part of the treatment totally fucked with the texture of my hair. My natural hair texture is super thick, but now I have patches of noticeably curly and thinning hair on the left side of my head and my "normal" hair texture on the right. IYKYK! After a couple months of patiently growing it out post-treatment, I looked in the bathroom mirror and realized that my hair is forever changed. Cancer is a chronic experience riddled with loss and grief on multiple levels. Sounds trivial in the bigger picture, but little things like this matter. I decided to take a chance on this salon and fortunately they had a same day appointment. That's where Quinten, my hair dresser, comes in to save me from my hair woes! After listening to my hair history, he somehow transformed my scraggly weeds to a haircut I'm happy with. And I don't think I've had someone so meticulous and detailed as he was. When I walked into the door of the Salon, my hair was in choppy layers, grey and in need of TLC. I met Mhari who greeted me in a professional, friendly manner. She is an expert at mixing colors and consulted with me as to the cut and style. My hair is wavy and short. Eventually I'd like to grow it out to a Bob w/longer layers. Mhari started this process by evening it out without removing too much or too little. She is pleasant, down-to-earth, and fun to talk with, always maintaining total attention to what she is doing. I have long, thick, curly hair somewhere between 2C and 3A texture that tends to be difficult to cut and style. I came in having not had it cut for 2-3 years and Emily absolutely transformed it! The layers are perfect, I can still put it up into a lazy bun, and my curls are back! Everyone was super nice and the location itself is really cute too. I saw Evi a few times and the cuts got progressively worse. She is skilled, but tends to go off on her own tangent and keeps cutting and cutting, which for me meant that she texturized the heck out of my fine hair (after I told her NOT to do any texturizing) and it is now so thin in parts that it is very unmanageable and will take months to grow back out to the regular thickness. I made an appointment with Katherine. Due to past subpar hair salon experiences, it was critical that my stylist have experience dealing with Asian hair. Katherine seemed like she did. Before the cut, we exchanged pictures, because you know, a picture is worth 1,000 words. I specifically brought in a picture of the hair style I wanted (short bob with A-line and side part) which helped her visualize. She showed me a picture of how she'd layer the back of my hair. During the cut, she asked all the right questions, attentively listened to my preferences, and thoroughly responded to my queries. She gave me a mirror to let me watch while she was cutting. After it, guess what? My haircut turned out better than I expected! In fact, I got complimented by another stylist, her customer, and the receptionist! With 20% Wildcard discount, I got a hair wash and cut for $34. Not bad. They accept credit for service but tips in cash. Over five or six years I have tried a few Evanston salons -- Trio on Central Street, Steven Pappageorge, and a few other places. Salon Roula, for me, is better than all of them. I found SR on Yelp and thought I'd give it a try -- I'm close to downtown Evanston on a daily basis so its very convenient for me. I'm really glad I did because I've been going here for a year or so now and I have loved it. It is much more reasonably priced than Trio or Pappageorge (especially if you have a Wildcard, for which you get a discount whether you're staff or student). Everyone is very friendly and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. It isn't a huge salon, and there aren't racks and racks of products everywhere -- the atmosphere is less retail-y and more inviting neighborhood salon-ish. I go to see Samantha and she has been great every time. I even took my husband to her before our wedding so she could do his haircut before the big day. He hadn't gotten a haircut from somewhere other than a Hair Cuttery or a Sport Clips in ages, and he was extremely pleased! I will definitely continue to come here for a long time! read more

I went into Salon Roula today for my very first time and I loved it. Lowell cut my hair, and it was the best haircut/trim I have ever had. First, he was extremely careful and took his time cutting my hair. I went for a trim but came out fresh and my hair had this beautiful volume. What I loved about it is that he took his time. Usually trims take like 10 minutes and aren't very diligent, but that didn't happen today, it was the exact opposite! The cut was so careful and so beautiful. Also, the price is excellent when comparing to other salons in the area. I paid 50$. Other proper saloons would charge much more. Also, there is a wildcard discount which i believe is 20%? I have been looking for a salon for quite a while. I've been looking for one that is close to my work, comfortable, friendly & of course, does a stellar job with hair. I found all of that with Stela at Salon Roula. I was in need of some serious color help. My daughter told me my hair looked like calico cat fur so that's pretty serious. Stela listened to what I wanted. Showed me color samples. Gave me great feedback and then did the most careful, thorough job applying it. The color is exactly what I wanted. No more calico! I had an awesome experience here! I called on a whim after seeing the reviews and am so happy I did! I made an appointment on a Saturday with Samantha just 2 days before. I had been thinking about chopping my hair off and donating it because I was so sick of it being long but I was also scared because I had heard so many horror stories of haircuts gone wrong. Samantha assured me that my hair would still be longer than my shoulders and that it sounded like I was more indecisive than not wanting to do it. I have gone to Katherine for two years now. I am a college student at Northwestern, and she is the only person I trust to touch my hair. The Basics: I have really long, really thick brunette straight hair. It typically takes Katherine 15-20 minutes for the cut (layers and clean up the dead ends) and 25-30 minutes to dry and style. The Review: Katherine is wonderful! She is always talkative, friendly, and I always leave the salon looking and feeling my best! My hair has never felt healthier, and she is great at cutting off only what needs to come off. The price is definitely right for this fabulous service, and there is a discount for NU students. I had my hair cut today by Gloria. I don't think i have ever been happier with a haircut!! I usually just get a straight trim for my long, curly, blondish brown hair. Gloria had an amazing vision for my hair. We cut off a few inches and she added long layers and angles. I've been going to Salon Roula for 3 years and I can't imagine going anywhere else for my haircut. I moved back to south Chicago after I graduated from NU but I still commute 40-45 minutes to go see Katherine. I don't let anyone else cut my hair because she is absolutely amazing! I've dealt with a lot of different stylists in the past who didn't know how to treat my thin hair, or cut and/or styled my hair in a way I did NOT like. Meeting Katherine was really awesome because she actually listened to my vision and worked with me to achieve it, rather than shut me down like most people would. I used to have such thin, damaged hair but after going to see Katherine, my hair has truly gotten so much healthier and thicker thanks to her tips and the products that Salon Roula carries. I also have fun with my hair now because I totally trust her and know she's going to do an awesome job. I very rarely give 5 full stars, but they are getting 'em! I had an awful hair color experience earlier this week and have been obessing over how much I hated it. I got a hair cut from Stella after I (rather impulsively) decided that I need four or five inches lopped off. I was actually pretty nervous about this, because I'd had the same person cut my hair for about ten years. I'd made an appointment for a Saturday but ended up having to wait a little bit because there was some sort of wedding party there getting their hair curled--absolutely no problem, everyone was very apologetic and nice and I just read magazines and waited a bit. The woman who shampooed my hair kept spraying water in my face, which is one of the reasons this is only 4 stars instead of 5, but I got the feeling she'd had a long morning already. Stella was great--she totally understood what I wanted even though I was speaking very vaguely and kept just pointing at my hair and saying, "You know, layers and short but not too short." She was very friendly and chatty, and checked in with me frequently about what she was doing. For an impulse decision, I was incredibly happy with the results. I used to get my hair done with Samantha and absolutely LOVED her. However she left and I started getting my hair done by Katherine. Katherine seemed rushed and distracted when doing my high lights and after she blow dried my hair, I could tell that she hadn't brushed the color up to the roots... so my highlights look blocky and are now growing out weird. If Samantha were to come back, I'd be back in a heart beat, but until then, I think I'll be finding a new salon unfortunately. read more

If you like BRASSY HAIR ..this is the place. I was super excited to have my hair done in an ombre. (dark hair going into a lighter fade on the ends) After reading the reviews, I thought this was salon would do a great job. I called to set an appointment and asked for someone who had experience doing dark hair, (not all cosmotologists can use lightner/bleach.. and I am ok with paying more for an experienced stylist) the polite receptionist replied they have someone who does ombres and to bring pics. The day comes and I get their early with several pics. I was nice and told the young lady in her early 20's i trust her professional opinion. BOTTOM LINE.. my hair is BRASSY. I told her while she was drying it I wanted it blond it the front like the pictures I showed her. SHE told me it wasn't possible. Roula asked "Is there a problem." I said, "We will see." No woman wants to be the UNHAPPY client in the salon. The stylist replied We can't make your hair blond in one sitting...even though your hair already has highlights. (That's obviously puzzling.) I paid and tipped for the service (shampoo and stylist) and ACTED happy as I left. The OWNER and the STYLIST let me leave with ORANGE hair.. even AFTER I initially expressed I wanted blond in the front after My hair was washed and blow dried. I said it wasn't blond enough. The stylist decided to pout... so wasnt going to let her fix a job she thought was fine, even though I spoke up. I was her last appointment of the day and it was her birthday. It was only 2pm, but maybe she was ready to leave. Now I have to go else where and get my hair FiXED. I NEVER WILL GO HERE AGAIN. read more

She is an incredibly hardworking, caring and compassionate person who knows and loves her customers and strives to make each and every one of them feel special and happy. I am very attached to and particular about my hair and Roula always gives me gentle advice but never pushes me to the point where I'm uncomfortable. She does and always has made my hair look awesome. I wanted a haircut, but it's graduation season here in Evanston so an appt is hard to come by. I also have an additional criteria of not paying full price by either finding a coupon or a student discount because I am a poor student. After the 3rd salon, I was not feeling the love. Finally I found Salon Roula with a great student discount 20% off. Samantha was great. I'm in a somewhat awkward hair growth phase going from a short asymmetric bob. I explained that I didn't want to lose length, but that my hair layers were all messed up in my effort to just grow my hair out. Samantha completely understood. I also like the fact that she made sure to take the time to consult with me about my hair, my hair's hopes, etc. before the shampoo. Some salons don't do that until after the shampoo when your hair is all flat and drippy. She took my input and was able to transform it into a fabulous head of hair. I like stylists who can translate what I want or at least what I think I want into a great hair style that looks good on me.
