First, some context: I Just finished my second round of cancer treatment a couple of months ago. The radiation part of the treatment totally fucked with the texture of my hair. My natural hair texture is super thick, but now I have patches of noticeably curly and thinning hair on the left side of my head and my "normal" hair texture on the right. IYKYK! After a couple months of patiently growing it out post-treatment, I looked in the bathroom mirror and realized that my hair is forever changed. Cancer is a chronic experience riddled with loss and grief on multiple levels. Sounds trivial in the bigger picture, but little things like this matter. I decided to take a chance on this salon and fortunately they had a same day appointment. That's where Quinten, my hair dresser, comes in to save me from my hair woes! After listening to my hair history, he somehow transformed my scraggly weeds to a haircut I'm happy with. And I don't think I've had someone so meticulous and detailed as he was. It's hard to explain, but it made me feel like myself again. So in short: Quinten is amazing! read more

Mari gave me the exact haircut I asked for. Now I've gotten two compliments on it so I couldn't be happier. Thanks, Mari.

When I walked into the door of the Salon, my hair was in choppy layers, grey and in need of TLC. I met Mhari who greeted me in a professional, friendly manner. She is an expert at mixing colors and consulted with me as to the cut and style. My hair is wavy and short. Eventually I'd like to grow it out to a Bob w/longer layers. Mhari started this process by evening it out without removing too much or too little. She is pleasant, down-to-earth, and fun to talk with, always maintaining total attention to what she is doing. I was very happy with the results. The other employees are very nice and the salon is clean and cheerful. I did not suffer "sticker shock" when I paid for the cut, color and blow dry. Thank you Mhari! read more

After spending 6 wonderful weeks in Evanston my hair got pretty long and out of control. I walked into Salon Soto without an appointment and was met by Mhari at the front desk. She brought right over to the sink for a shampoo. She was so thoughtful and took her time. She cut and styled my hair, and it came out amazing. I feel so beautiful! I highly recommend Mhari and Salon Soto! I may just have to fly back to Chicago for all my haircuts! Thank Mhari you are the best!! read more

Got my hair cut here by Evi! She is an expert in working with curls & wavy hair (but works with all hair types). Not only does she give great cuts, she's so good at giving me advice & recommending products for me when I need them. The salon is great, they are taking a lot of precautions during COVID-19, & the location is in such a cute area - It's easy to grab lunch or a coffee before or after your appointment. Highly recommend this salon, & Evi! read more

Love love Evie...she works so hard to make sure you're happy. Does great color and cuts. She is so patient and caring with my elderly mom too. Recommend 100% read more

Love Samantha! Went to her a couple of times and am happy to say I'll actually be sticking with a hairdresser for the first time in my life! So far, I've gone in for 2 hair cuts, a coloring, and a casual updo for a semi-fancy dinner, and I've loved it every time. Also recommended it to bf who always ends up with bowl cuts for not asking for what he wants and she did not disappoint. She definitely knows what she's doing and I'd trust her to do whatever with my hair. With the NU student discount (20%!) it's a really good deal. BRING CASH FOR TIP because you can't tip with credit card on the slip like a restaurant. read more

I have long, thick, curly hair somewhere between 2C and 3A texture that tends to be difficult to cut and style. I came in having not had it cut for 2-3 years and Emily absolutely transformed it! The layers are perfect, I can still put it up into a lazy bun, and my curls are back! Everyone was super nice and the location itself is really cute too. It was also quite a bit less expensive than other salons I've been to. Would definitely recommend for anyone with curls who are worried about the dreaded triangle cut... that won't happen here! read more

I had been needing my haircut for an embarrassingly long time. I had a surprise break at work and was able to walk-in for an appointment with Sharon due to a cancellation. Sharon did an incredible job! My hair is thick, wavy and long! Most hairstylists run when they see me. Not Sharon, she knew exactly how to cut my wavy locks and even out years of layering/thinning gone wrong from other stylists, perhaps less versed in cutting the waves. Sharon, thank you for the beautiful, affordable cut. I also appreciate your warm and kind energy. I felt right at home at Salon Roula and will definitely be going back...in exactly six-weeks, as a matter of fact! Thank you! read more

I saw Evi a few times and the cuts got progressively worse. She is skilled, but tends to go off on her own tangent and keeps cutting and cutting, which for me meant that she texturized the heck out of my fine hair (after I told her NOT to do any texturizing) and it is now so thin in parts that it is very unmanageable and will take months to grow back out to the regular thickness. I thought this place had potential but after a few misses, I would not recommend. read more

I went to Salon Roula to dye my bleached hair purple. I wasn't exactly sure of what shade I wanted, but talked it out with Gloria and Katherine. Gloria was lovely and very positive about the whole thing and explained what she was doing and how I should take care of my color treated hair in the future. With the wildcard discount, the whole trip was very affordable and I would definitely go again. read more

Positive: Cleanliness, Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Good Value Strict Adherence to COVID Requirements I have been a client of Roula's for many years. She has always provided me with excellent service - in all regards! And now, in the age of COVID, she and her staff are doing a stellar job complying with all of the State's requirements: temperature taking, social distancing, masks, hand washing, sanitizing all surfaces, etc. Whether I've been there for color and/or a haircut, I have felt totally comfortable in her shop. If you're looking for a high quality salon who is also managing COVID requirements conscientiously, I recommend Salon Roula! read more

Friendly small salon. Excellent dry cut and styling for my fine curly hair. Great atmosphere

I get my hair cut and colored by Mhari and it always comes out wonderfully. She is approachable and kind and always looks for my feedback during our consultation. I cannot say enough good things about Salon Soto. Not to mention, ever since I started coming here, I get compliments galore on my hair. read more

I made an appointment with Katherine. Due to past subpar hair salon experiences, it was critical that my stylist have experience dealing with Asian hair. Katherine seemed like she did. Before the cut, we exchanged pictures, because you know, a picture is worth 1,000 words. I specifically brought in a picture of the hair style I wanted (short bob with A-line and side part) which helped her visualize. She showed me a picture of how she'd layer the back of my hair. During the cut, she asked all the right questions, attentively listened to my preferences, and thoroughly responded to my queries. She gave me a mirror to let me watch while she was cutting. After it, guess what? My haircut turned out better than I expected! In fact, I got complimented by another stylist, her customer, and the receptionist! With 20% Wildcard discount, I got a hair wash and cut for $34. Not bad. They accept credit for service but tips in cash. If you don't have cash, you can withdraw it at the nearby Chase ATM, or get cash back from the Whole Foods on Church/Chicago. read more

Over five or six years I have tried a few Evanston salons -- Trio on Central Street, Steven Pappageorge, and a few other places. Salon Roula, for me, is better than all of them. I found SR on Yelp and thought I'd give it a try -- I'm close to downtown Evanston on a daily basis so its very convenient for me. I'm really glad I did because I've been going here for a year or so now and I have loved it. It is much more reasonably priced than Trio or Pappageorge (especially if you have a Wildcard, for which you get a discount whether you're staff or student). Everyone is very friendly and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. It isn't a huge salon, and there aren't racks and racks of products everywhere -- the atmosphere is less retail-y and more inviting neighborhood salon-ish. I go to see Samantha and she has been great every time. I even took my husband to her before our wedding so she could do his haircut before the big day. He hadn't gotten a haircut from somewhere other than a Hair Cuttery or a Sport Clips in ages, and he was extremely pleased! I will definitely continue to come here for a long time! read more

I found Salon Roula by reading reviews on Yelp. I have been thrilled with the service! I've got fine straight hair that my previous hair dressed kept insisting needed the ends trimmed more & more to keep it healthy & looking good til I had lost nearly 6" of length in 18 months. I was mortified! It was such a slow progression that I didn't realize it right away. Roula has been a life saver! She has helped me grow my hair longer & healthier than it has been in years! She's not only knowledgable but a really kind person as well! I really enjoy going in there! read more

I have been looking for a salon for quite a while. I've been looking for one that is close to my work, comfortable, friendly & of course, does a stellar job with hair. I found all of that with Stela at Salon Roula. I was in need of some serious color help. My daughter told me my hair looked like calico cat fur so that's pretty serious. Stela listened to what I wanted. Showed me color samples. Gave me great feedback and then did the most careful, thorough job applying it. The color is exactly what I wanted. No more calico! I didn't get a hair cut this time, but watched her cut the client before me & wouldn't hesitate to have her cut mine in the future! She also did a fantastic job styling my hair. My hair is curly & she dried it straight. Most stylists don't use the right products & don't flat iron here and there so my hair ends up feeling crunchy & looking newscaster-poofy. Not Stela! My hair is super smooth & soft. Great experience from start to finish! I've finally found my salon home. Yay! read more

I was nervous to try a new salon after moving to Evanston (I'm extraordinarily picky about my hair) but Katherine listened and executed perfectly. I went into Salon Roula today for my very first time and I loved it. Lowell cut my hair, and it was the best haircut/trim I have ever had. First, he was extremely careful and took his time cutting my hair. I went for a trim but came out fresh and my hair had this beautiful volume. What I loved about it is that he took his time. Usually trims take like 10 minutes and aren't very diligent, but that didn't happen today, it was the exact opposite! The cut was so careful and so beautiful. Also, the price is excellent when comparing to other salons in the area. I paid 50$. Other proper saloons would charge much more. Also, there is a wildcard discount which i believe is 20%? Anyways, overall, great experience, definitely coming back again. read more

I had an awesome experience here! I called on a whim after seeing the reviews and am so happy I did! I made an appointment on a Saturday with Samantha just 2 days before. I had been thinking about chopping my hair off and donating it because I was so sick of it being long but I was also scared because I had heard so many horror stories of haircuts gone wrong. Samantha assured me that my hair would still be longer than my shoulders and that it sounded like I was more indecisive than not wanting to do it. She gave me the little push I needed to realize I really did want to do it. And let me tell you, my hair hasn't been this short since I was a kid and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! The whole experience was great - I felt like we were old friends and I was out of there in 45 minutes! I will definitely be coming back to Salon Roula and requesting Samantha in the future. read more

Salon Roula is a delightful shop with a sweet and friendly vibe! Roula and her crew aim to please! As the owner/operator Roula provides a level of service that is unprecedented. She has cut my hair for 30 + years and has kept my look current and easy to manage. The salon offers full services cut, style, color, perm and a great manicure ! It is an upbeat, happy place with an owner who aims to please. Salon Roula offers discounts to Northwestern students. Recently, Roula showed me an incredible kindness by coming with me to choose the right wig to use during chemo. She followed up with me, calling to make sure it got cut and styled. This is one extraordinary stylist who goes above and beyond for brides, customers, grads and friends! Lucky to have a business like this in Evanston! read more

I'm not a person who gets her hair cut professionally very often-- I'm a broke DIYer and hence usually give myself trims and even full cuts, with pretty good results. But I recently decided I wanted bangs and thought maybe I should let such a drastic change be handled by the professionals. I did some research on Yelp and decided on Salon Roula from the positive reviews. And what a GREAT experience I had! Katherine totally gets my style and did a fantastic job with my hair. And she offers free bang trims. Seriously, she and SR in general are awesome. And for my broke DIY self, the prices are not at all bad for the super professional services provided. Nothing else to say-- go to Salon Roula! read more

I never noticed this place until I received a gift certificate for a haircut/manicure- I'm so thankful that I finally found Salon Roula! If you want to get a haircut, Samantha knows what she's doing, especially if you have straight thick hair. She saved my hair from a terrible choppy haircut. She's the best! The manicurist also did a great job and is really nice. Everyone who works at Salon Roula is very friendly. Who needs a big/flashy/overpriced salon. I highly recommend Salon Roula! read more

I saw this place on Yelp and decided to give it a go because of all the positive reviews. I am so glad I did! Samantha cut and colored my hair and it turned out better than I could have thought! I love it, and she made me feel very much at ease even though it was my first time getting color. Another great thing is that I got 20% for being a NU student!!!! So awesome! read more

I have gone to Katherine for two years now. I am a college student at Northwestern, and she is the only person I trust to touch my hair. The Basics: I have really long, really thick brunette straight hair. It typically takes Katherine 15-20 minutes for the cut (layers and clean up the dead ends) and 25-30 minutes to dry and style. The Review: Katherine is wonderful! She is always talkative, friendly, and I always leave the salon looking and feeling my best! My hair has never felt healthier, and she is great at cutting off only what needs to come off. The price is definitely right for this fabulous service, and there is a discount for NU students. However, there is no line to tip on credit cards, so make sure to have some cash on hand for the stylist and the woman who washes your hair. Definitely recommend! read more

I've been going to Salon Roula for 3 years and I can't imagine going anywhere else for my haircut. I moved back to south Chicago after I graduated from NU but I still commute 40-45 minutes to go see Katherine. I don't let anyone else cut my hair because she is absolutely amazing! I've dealt with a lot of different stylists in the past who didn't know how to treat my thin hair, or cut and/or styled my hair in a way I did NOT like. Meeting Katherine was really awesome because she actually listened to my vision and worked with me to achieve it, rather than shut me down like most people would. I used to have such thin, damaged hair but after going to see Katherine, my hair has truly gotten so much healthier and thicker thanks to her tips and the products that Salon Roula carries. I also have fun with my hair now because I totally trust her and know she's going to do an awesome job. Katherine is the most collaborative, attentive, creative, professional and talented hair stylist I've ever had. She's also just an all around lovely person to talk to! I always feel comfortable and at ease whenever I visit. Her work has gotten me so many compliments too. This literally never used to happen to me! She's so detailed and really takes her time to make sure everything is perfect and that I leave the salon feeling beautiful. I highly recommend! She's the best! read more

I very rarely give 5 full stars, but they are getting 'em! I had an awful hair color experience earlier this week and have been obessing over how much I hated it. I finally snapped and needed it fixed, and I needed it fixed right at that moment. I called Salon Roula and they squeezed me in with Samantha over my lunch hour. When I walked in, I instantly felt okay about life. Samantha is so professional and efficient. She not only fixed the awfulneess, she made it look incredible! I was able to be in and out in an hour and 15 minutes. I am officially a "lifer" here. THANK YOU SAMANTHA!!! PS- I really wish I had a before and after pic, it was that big of a transformation! read more

I went here after moving to West Rogers Park after living living in the southwest side of Chicago my entire life. I've had the same hair dresser for years. Thankfully, Evi took care of me and I was ready for a huge change. I cut about 4 inches off my hair and told her how my hair is usually flat and and she was so helpful and did a wonderful job! I definitely found a new hair dresser!! read more

I had my hair cut today by Gloria. I don't think i have ever been happier with a haircut!! I usually just get a straight trim for my long, curly, blondish brown hair. Gloria had an amazing vision for my hair. We cut off a few inches and she added long layers and angles. She didnt put a lot of product in my hair, so when i got home, i wet it and styled it how i normally do. Once it dried, I was amazed!! My hair has never had more life, more shape, or more bounce! I lovelovelove it!! I cannot stop looking at it in the mirror. Thank you so much, Gloria!!! read more

I'm so glad Salon Roula is open again after the COVID quarantine! I've been back twice since the reopening in June. I feel very comfortable there. The salon staff are so careful and serious about cleaning & scheduling. They have a great system in place to keep staff & clients safe and healthy. Roula has been keeping my hair in shape for over 10 years, and I look forward to many more "genius" haircuts. Thanks, Roula! read more

I got a hair cut from Stella after I (rather impulsively) decided that I need four or five inches lopped off. I was actually pretty nervous about this, because I'd had the same person cut my hair for about ten years. I'd made an appointment for a Saturday but ended up having to wait a little bit because there was some sort of wedding party there getting their hair curled--absolutely no problem, everyone was very apologetic and nice and I just read magazines and waited a bit. The woman who shampooed my hair kept spraying water in my face, which is one of the reasons this is only 4 stars instead of 5, but I got the feeling she'd had a long morning already. Stella was great--she totally understood what I wanted even though I was speaking very vaguely and kept just pointing at my hair and saying, "You know, layers and short but not too short." She was very friendly and chatty, and checked in with me frequently about what she was doing. For an impulse decision, I was incredibly happy with the results. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a place to do their hair! read more

I had my haircut yesterday with Paula. I just needed layers for my super blunt and heavy haircut. Nothing extreme. Paula's a very nice gal who stocks Romanian fruit candy at her chair. She gave me a simple, yet elegant haircut. They honor Wildcard discounts, making their services affordable. They're close to campus, the CTA and Whole Foods. I highly recommend Salon Roula. read more

I used to get my hair done with Samantha and absolutely LOVED her. However she left and I started getting my hair done by Katherine. Katherine seemed rushed and distracted when doing my high lights and after she blow dried my hair, I could tell that she hadn't brushed the color up to the roots... so my highlights look blocky and are now growing out weird. If Samantha were to come back, I'd be back in a heart beat, but until then, I think I'll be finding a new salon unfortunately. read more

If you like BRASSY HAIR ..this is the place. I was super excited to have my hair done in an ombre. (dark hair going into a lighter fade on the ends) After reading the reviews, I thought this was salon would do a great job. I called to set an appointment and asked for someone who had experience doing dark hair, (not all cosmotologists can use lightner/bleach.. and I am ok with paying more for an experienced stylist) the polite receptionist replied they have someone who does ombres and to bring pics. The day comes and I get their early with several pics. I was nice and told the young lady in her early 20's i trust her professional opinion. BOTTOM LINE.. my hair is BRASSY. I told her while she was drying it I wanted it blond it the front like the pictures I showed her. SHE told me it wasn't possible. Roula asked "Is there a problem." I said, "We will see." No woman wants to be the UNHAPPY client in the salon. The stylist replied We can't make your hair blond in one sitting...even though your hair already has highlights. (That's obviously puzzling.) I paid and tipped for the service (shampoo and stylist) and ACTED happy as I left. The OWNER and the STYLIST let me leave with ORANGE hair.. even AFTER I initially expressed I wanted blond in the front after My hair was washed and blow dried. I said it wasn't blond enough. The stylist decided to pout... so wasnt going to let her fix a job she thought was fine, even though I spoke up. I was her last appointment of the day and it was her birthday. It was only 2pm, but maybe she was ready to leave. Now I have to go else where and get my hair FiXED. I NEVER WILL GO HERE AGAIN. read more

Today was my second time going to see Katherine at this salon and she was incredible! If you have short hair, she is the person to see!! She did a fabulous job of cutting it to the RIGHT length and giving it a fun, yet professional, style. She took me from a dull dirty blond, to an ash blond that is the perfect shade for summer!! I highly recommend her as a stylist!! The entire experience, both times, has been wonderful!!! read more

I wanted a haircut, but it's graduation season here in Evanston so an appt is hard to come by. I also have an additional criteria of not paying full price by either finding a coupon or a student discount because I am a poor student. After the 3rd salon, I was not feeling the love. Finally I found Salon Roula with a great student discount 20% off. Samantha was great. I'm in a somewhat awkward hair growth phase going from a short asymmetric bob. I explained that I didn't want to lose length, but that my hair layers were all messed up in my effort to just grow my hair out. Samantha completely understood. I also like the fact that she made sure to take the time to consult with me about my hair, my hair's hopes, etc. before the shampoo. Some salons don't do that until after the shampoo when your hair is all flat and drippy. She took my input and was able to transform it into a fabulous head of hair. I like stylists who can translate what I want or at least what I think I want into a great hair style that looks good on me. I definitely would recommend this place to someone who hates getting lost in the salon system or perhaps lost their favorite stylist due to promotion and higher prices. They can work hair and they do it very well. read more

I have been going to Roula for years and she has become like a mentor to me. She is an incredibly hardworking, caring and compassionate person who knows and loves her customers and strives to make each and every one of them feel special and happy. I am very attached to and particular about my hair and Roula always gives me gentle advice but never pushes me to the point where I'm uncomfortable. She does and always has made my hair look awesome.
