I needed a last minute hair cut and went through yelp to get a haircut and some highlights. Elda was a pleasure to work with, she listened to what I wanted, to keep my hair long despite of my overly textured hair. She explained to me that she will have to cut it shorter to even my hair out, almost apologizing that my hair will be shorter because of the overly textured end. The long and short of it is she did amazing highlights, that my husband even noticed it and complimented my hair. You can't add a tip if you pay by credit card. You either have to tip cash or by check. read more

I called around 2:15 on a Tuesday and asked if they could fit an appointment in that same afternoon. They answered quickly, friendly and accommodated the request. I could come by at 3! I had simply said I had long hair (it's to the small of my back) and needed a cut. She quoted me $60. When I got there, there were 3 staff members all doing hair and all turned to the door to say hello. I loved the acknowledgment! Elda was my stylist and finished her client in a timely fashion to make our appointment. We had a consultation over some magazine photos I had earmarked while waiting. (The shop had PLENTY of periodicals.) I had told her I wanted something more drastic from what I normally do, but when she saw the length and natural wave to my hair, she talked me into keeping it safe and going more layered GRADUALLY. Since I wasn't entirely convinced what I wanted anyway, it seemed like a good plan. First impressions: The store was cool, clean and smelled pleasant. The décor was modern and minimal; the color scheme neutral, yet soothing. During the consultation, I shared with her that I needed a color too, but I could just stop at CVS and pick up color if she didn't have time. She MADE the time. She cut me first, then applied the color. It sat on my hair longer than I would've liked (an hour-plus), but I had several inches of gray outgrowth and the ends were quite washed out from previous store bought dyes. I'm a brunette, so my hair was a flat, mousy salt-and-pepper mix on the crown and reddish-brown on the ends. She had taken another client while the color sat on my hair. I was getting antsy, but I was also very appreciative that she made both cut and color happen. Even after the cut, there was a LOT of hair to apply the color. The end product was an even, shiny, rich brown that I absolutely loved. The cut: I had wanted one more layer, but she was adamant not to put it in. She thought it wouldn't look good and that I'd be unhappy later. I deferred to her advice, but after a day, I think I want the layer. I had mentioned bangs too at the time. Those she said I could come in for anytime. She never charges her clients for bangs. Nice. Overall, I was very happy with the experience. read more

A LivingSocial deal for a $25 Brazilian brought me to this salon located in my college town. I'm a regular at the European Wax Center Clybourn but wanted to try somewhere walking distance to home. A lady named Joanne waxed me and did a solid, satisfactory job that I would give 4 stars, but their organization and customer service deserve no more than 2. Before coming in, I had called about their availability for a Friday appointment, which did not end up working out for me. I called again the next day for a Saturday appointment and was immediately booked. After the receptionist put me down on the schedule, she called again and said that they couldn't honor my Living Social deal because I had a no-call, no-show on Friday. What?! I did not make an appointment on Friday, and when I explained that, the lady turned defensive and sour - "uhhh NO....you're in the book, and you lost her a client, so you need to pay the full price for the Brazilian service." I talked her down and told her there was a misunderstanding, to which she rudely responded, "Well, just make sure you show up today." I firmly talked her down and they ended up honoring the deal, just as they should have, but the receptionist made me uncomfortable enough to dread going in that day. I'm a nice girl and I hate to upset people, so I gave my waxer a fat $20 tip, but I'm not coming back. read more

My husband and I have been going to Salon Lamia for years, I see Lamia and he sees Elda, Jwan has done my eyebrows (amazing threading!) and Janet has started spray tanning there as well (Thank goodness! My husband has been seeing Elda for about as many years and had been more than pleased with the level of service and attention he gets. As a man, I think he was hesitant at first to go to a "salon" but has become very comfortable there and would not change. As a guy who keeps his hair a little longer, I've had only great haircuts from here. They are great about fitting you in and are really friendly - plus you have to love the head massage during the shampoo. Elda has been my primary 'stylist' and she is wonderful; my hair looks great coming out of the salon and staying looking good as it grows. This was the worst hair experience I have ever had. The salon charged me 300 dollars to move up tape in extensions that were falling out. After ripping at my hair for 2 hours, they deciding that they didn't have time to finish the job and I had to come in the next day. After having to spend the rest of the day with my hair covered in glue, they put the extensions back in the next day without clarifying my hair. The extensions all fell out within 4 days. The salon refused to give me a refund. I also have damage in my hair due to the horrible re application of the extensions. read more

When you've had your hair colored and processed as much as I have, you know when someone has talent. That's what Lamia has, skills, talent and magic! I went in with brassy highlights, poorly done "balayage" at a previous salon and showed Lamia a picture of what I wanted my hair to look like and she didn't even hesitate. I love, love this place! I walked in with no appointment, asked for waxing services and Janet (I believe that was her name) immediately set me up with the person even though her shift didn't start for another 15 minutes. She also offered me bottled water even though waxing is a fairly quick procedure. It was the least painful waxing I have had to date, a sure sign of an excellent technician. Made the appointment at the suggestion of a friend. She highly recommended Edda who was unavailable so I booked with Elda. I needed my last horrible haircut from a low-cost national chain salon "fixed" while it continued to grow out. Elda was very receptive to the description of how I wanted it cut and offered suggestions as to how to best manage this awkward "in-between" stage. She did an amazing job! I often find stylists can be "scissor happy" but Elda actually left my hair slightly longer than I anticipated. She was friendly without being noisy or annoying. She also advised me NOT to ever color my hair due to the natural highlights I already have. She nor the other stylists pestered me about buying products on my way out. Price was extremely reasonable. $60 + tip for wash, cut, blow dry. Salon Lamia is a refreshing contrast to the other trendy salons in downtown Evanston. I have had my hair cut by Lamia several times. She knows how to cut hair, is fashionable and fun to look at, and she remembers things about me so we have some chit chat. The ambiance is lovely and the place is clean. However, I sometimes feel like I didn't quite get what I asked for. I have thick hair feel that despite requests for a certain type of styling Lamia kind of does it her preferred way, and I end up a little frustrated after I get home. I also agree with the other poster that the staff (including Lamia) do a lot of chit chatting in another language which comes off as a little rude in front of customers. read more
