Honestly- garbage experience top to bottom. I first went and showed pictures of my past pixie and said, "I think my hair is too damaged and we should cut it back to short." The stylist said it just needed a $40 keratin treatment and he'd fix it up. He also gave it a very weird bang that looked like what a high schooler would do to their hair if they'd never watched a bang cutting tutorial. Fine. I'm genuinely low maintenance and when I left it looked great! Til I washed it and saw nothing was improved. I wished I'd gotten the pixie but he insisted that wasn't the solution and that he could fix the problem, which he didn't. I went back the next week for a blow out because I have to get some photos done and I can't make my hair look healthy. I told the different stylist I just wanted it to look healthy and not like helmet hair where it just curls under around my head. But she wasn't listening and that's exactly what I got. I had to come home and redo it all. My husband laughed and said I looked like a Puritan Farm Wife. I included photos of what I came home with and how I fixed it myself below. People just don't listen here. They know what their skillset is (and I firmly believe their skillset is to turn out suburban basic styles) and that is what you'll be getting. read more

Been going there for 10+ years. I've had decent experiences with the stylists but there's a lot of turnover. But the reception area is entirely unprofessional, discourteous and completely uninterested in helping clients. I usually have to remind them that I'd need to make an appt. And it always seems like a chore to them to do it. I was even asked to wait a second while one of them went into the back to grab a personal item for the other one. Could have waited till I left and there were no clients. Had to call three times to book and the receptionist was beyond rude. Pretty sure she was mocking my voice due to recent surgery. read more

The company changed the confirmation system with a link to confirm your appointment instead of the usual call I received every single time I had an appointment. Because I could not make my appointment, I did not click through for the confirmation, just like any other email system that makes you click to confirm your appointment; and when you do not confirm, your appointment is canceled. They called to see where I was, and I told them I had not confirmed via the link in the email, and I told them I would call tomorrow to rebook as I was in the middle of something with no access to my calendar. Not even 5 min later, they charged my credit card 50% of my cut, so I called back and was told by the condescending person on the phone ( who somehow found this funny and was literally laughing) that it was too bad; it was my responsibility to call to cancel; that the link to confirm does not remove the appointment. (see attached screenshot of the email) HOW WOULD I KNOW THAT? Nowhere in the email does it say you have to call to cancel? Wow! Paul, the owner of all the salons, is flipping amazing. He has great taste and really knows how to work with the shape of someone's face and head. I had long hair that was starting to look a little dull so I asked for a bob, and I have never had such a great haircut - ever. And I've gone to great salons. Tons of complements. I've had Elvis color my hair there twice now and I've gotten lots of compliments as well. Everyone's nice too. No snootiness. My only complaint is that I wish they would offer a coffee or tea. read more

I have been going to this salon literally since they opened in the 90's. However, after my last visit, I'm giving up on them. My colorist does a good job, but the overall vibe of the salon has become pretty condescending. I'm going to find a new salon where I can not only feel good about my hair but also feel good about the time/money that I spend at the business. Honestly, I'm bummed, but it's just not worth how I feel when I leave. ((Although this week's issue was different, I'm remembering back to a time when I drove an hour to my appointment, arrived & checked in, and then they told me that the stylist only had time for a "quick consultation," not the actual appointment I'd made for highlights. I had taken the day off for the appt and no explanation was provided...just that the stylist "no longer had time." I still went back but after that, but when these things happen over and over, and you add in the way the staff treat you like they are doing you a favor, I'm just done.)) read more

Bianca, the colorist, was incredible. First time with her, and felt immediately that I was in the best hands, and my expectations were exceeded. She listened closely, and quickly shaped a plan. This plan was to be a rich deep brunette color, with vibrancy from pops of rich blue, with undertones of purple and resembling a teal. It was combination of classy, edgy, fun, richness, and feeling like my true sense was evident. I had an idea, but really needed that colorist expertise, our connection drove out the best plan. What's important to me, is that I felt 1000% at ease. It was stunning, classy and edgy (could keep to "when I might decide). Loved!! I'm so thrilled with the outcome, which was this deep brunette, and then this rich color of "unexpected". Hair color can enliven - this is exactly what I experienced. She was a perfect balance of listening, helping me understand what's possible, and making it happen in a way that I'm BEYOND THRILLED. This is hard to come by, you're in great hands. read more

You'd think that at a place with prices as high as they are that their colorists could manage a simple root touch up. Especially with someone who has no history of using box dye, and who brought plenty of inspiration pictures as well as specific instructions from the hairstylist who initially dyed their hair (who sadly lives in another state.) But no. Let me also just say before I begin- I'm a gen z college student who works in customer service so it takes A LOT for me to not hide from conflict. After being rebooked multiple times I came in for a simple root touch up. I had copper hair that was fading and roots that had grown out so I showed all my pictures and explained I wanted a simple touch up and brightening of the ends just to get that copper to stand out again. When I left my hair was like 4 shades darker than when I walked in, my roots where 2 different colors, neither of which were the same color as the ends, and my hair was no longer red but dark brown. Obviously I was incredibly upset as my hair was unblended and 3 different colors, none of which were the color I asked for, but I decided to give them a chance to make it right. I came back the next day (with specific suggestions from the hairstylist in MA that I trust) and was told she couldn't do what I asked. She offered highlights instead. I explained that I do not want highlights, I want my color corrected and she said she didn't feel comfortable doing what I asked. Since I have zero faith in their abilities I left and called to get a refund since the service they provided wouldn't have met anyone's expectations- if I had lied about what I've done with my hair or been unclear or maybe even JUST gotten the wrong shade but my hair was all one color maybe I could understand them not being willing to refund me. But my hair is 3 DIFFERENT COLORS and I'm pretty sure NO ONE wants that. They still have not given me a refund and now I will have to pay someone more competent a lot of money to do color corrections and use bleach on my hair because its now so dark (which I never needed to use before) damaging my wallet and my hair. Never go to Art+ Science. Don't let the name and pricing fool you like they did me. read more

Original Review: Booked a beard trim with Anthony. Had to wait about a month to get in, which is normal/fine. Sent me an email the day of my appointment to let me know they can't do a beard trim due to new Covid policy which they set 2 weeks earlier. I'm not upset about the policy, but waiting 2 weeks to let me know -- and on the day of no less -- is extremely unprofessional. I could have booked somewhere else instead of waiting around for this appointment. Told me they could still cut my hair, as if that fixes anything -- even if I had hair and didn't shave my head, that's not what I booked. Extremely discourteous and disrespectful not to notify booked clients as soon as your policy changed. read more

I had been looking forward to this appointment for WEEKS. I figured a fresh color was the self-TLC I so desperately needed. Come time for my appointment, however, the entire situation was a nightmare. First off, parking is pretty horrible for this location. I finally gave up on street parking and decided to splurge (ok it was $7 but still not ideal) on the garage parking beneath their building. I excitedly check in for my appointment and sit in their waiting area. Amalia greets me and I change into my gown. She sits me down and I am ready to show off the pictures I saved as "hair inspo," when she tells me they did not schedule enough time for my appointment, and there is nothing they could do for me today. I was heartbroken! I took the day off for this! When scheduling my appointment on the phone, I explained that I have naturally curly black hair with grown out highlights, and I would like to dye it all back to black. The woman on the phone said "Ok I'll put you in for a Color Touch-Up Appointment with Amalia!" I didn't question the terminology--I figured she actually works in this industry so I will trust her judgement after being transparent about my hair color/texture. Look, I know my hair well enough to know it's typically an inconvenience to hair stylists. It's really dark and really kinky, so I have learned to be as descriptive as possible when booking with a new salon. Being walked up to the front desk and told I have to reschedule to accommodate more time for my hair, it was insecurities realized in full force, completely the opposite of the self-care moment I was seeking. They told me with the holidays coming up, it would be hard to fit in this time with a stylist, so ultimately I was sent away. I've already reviewed Art and Science once when they were at their old location, but I figure I might as well write another for their new spot! I absolutely love Art and Science but that's mainly because I adore Audrey. She's the same stylist I've been going to for years and I can't imagine going to anyone else (please don't ever make me!). I'll keep this review short and sweet since like I said, I've already reviewed A&S before. Let me list the reasons why you should come here for a haircut: 1) Audrey is my favorite and I completely trust her with my hair which is a big deal for a girl 2) She sits you down at the beginning to discuss hair 3) Audrey actually listens to you when you say you only want 3 inches taken off 4) I told her I was bored with my hair and gave her a vague idea of what I wanted (shorter cut, more flow and texture) 5) She gave me her suggestions and explained exactly what she would do (take off 3-5 inches, put in a lot of layers underneath for texture, face framing pieces, etc) 6) Audrey is so fun and easy to talk it, it's like chatting with your girlfriend at happy hour 7) You are offered a beverage of your choice (wine for me, it was after 5pm...totally justified, right??) 8) You walk out a supermodel Their new space is great, lots of floor to ceiling windows allowing a lot of light in and it's also very spacious. Calling all blondes! As a naturally dark blonde, I have been getting my hair highlighted for decades, so I know how difficult getting just the right shade of blonde can be. I've got horror stories to prove it! I've been seeing Celi for color for the past year and have always been satisfied with my partial highlights. Today I wanted something different, but I didn't know exactly what. Celi took the time, despite my appointment not being booked to accommodate it, and gave me an all-over color that took twice as long as I was booked for, and never once seemed bothered by the inconvenience that I was causing her. She matched my color to a picture we had tried to copy, which is no small miracle, as any blonde knows. Celi knows her stuff! If she can work wonders with blonde hair, she can work with any color! read more

My stylist, Ariel, demonstrated genuine care and compassion for me when I decided to buzz my hair (it will be falling out soon due to chemotherapy.) She sat with my while I cried and bolstered my spirits when I saw how the new look she gave me made me look like a beautiful badass! She's a spectacular human and a talented stylist. read more

I typically do not care to write reviews but I figured I should warn anyone who is considering coming to Art and Science. I have been going here for about a year now and always had a good experience until one day I didn't. I came in for a bleach and tone and a root smudge and left with blotchy hair. I made sure to clearly express to my stylist what I was looking for, showing her inspiration pictures and emphasize that I wanted cool tones. None of this was taken into consideration. When the bleach was applied to my scalp/ roots I noticed that some of my natural brown outgrowth was left out of the bleach. When I asked why my stylist told me the bleach would expand and cover it. When the bleach was washed out and I went for my root smudge I could tell that the girl who was training did not know what she was doing and was left alone to apply the root smudge, leaving me with an uneven look. When everything was done I was left with spots all over my hair. I was left with a horrendous yellow band in my hair. I then had to have a correction done turning my 3 hour appointment into a 6 hour appointment. I asked to talk to a manager and was told there was not one there and that I would be contacted at a later time. After calling Art and Science for days I was finally able to get ahold of a manager and he said he saw the whole thing happen (weird considering that I was told there was not a manager there). After speaking to the manager he said he would consult the stylists to figure out the next step for my hair. After not being contacted for a few days and attempting to call the salon many times I gave up and moved to a new salon. I will not be returning and I would not recommend this salon to anyone. read more

While the atmosphere is cool and all... I got the worst haircut I've ever gotten here. Frankie SUCKS she ruined my hair. My hair is pretty simple to deal with and she basically shredded it by trying to thin out all of it leaving it stringy and thin and frizzy. I've since been to two other hairstylists at different salons to try to make it better (I would recommend Ming at Steven Papa George) and they BOTH told me that that person had no idea what she was doing and that she ruined my hair for a while until it grows out passed the damage. On TOP of this, I called back a few days later to say I was unhappy with it and to ask if someone else could see me to try to fix it. They said that I could only come in to have Frankie do it again with someone else standing and watching. That sounds like I'd rather GAUGE MY EYES OUT. I don't want to sit there feeling guilty ! and also getting my hair cut by the same person again !! so I said I would think about it... then I called back again and was told oh SORRY you'd have to pay for another appointment if it's more than two weeks after your original one because "at this point it could just be your hair" WTF does that mean?! I usually don't leave bad reviews but I had a terrible experience here. I went in some time ago for a consultation and asked for balayage, showing a photo of my desired results (I was completely brunette and wanted a very blonde balayage). The stylist told me it's very doable and we can go ahead and book an appointment. The day comes for the appointment and I'm very excited, but I end up with hair that looks almost exactly the same as before she "dyed" it. I was still entirely brunette with only slight streaks of blonde that you could only see in the sun... I asked her if I'm supposed to come back or if there's anything else she needs to do to make it lighter (as this was only my second time dyeing my hair and I'm unfamiliar with the process). She said this was the final result and if I'd like it even lighter, we can book another appointment aka pay the full price again and explained how it's difficult to get it that light the first time... this was very infuriating because I was told "that's very doable!" at my consultation and was never told it'd be difficult to get it that light the first try. I called back the next day to explain the situation and ask for another appointment to get my originally desired results free of charge. The front desk lady was very kind and gave me the email where I can send photos of my hair and explain the situation. They let me know they'd do everything they can to fix this. Then a manager from the salon called saying they saw my email and are very sorry, I explained the situation again, and she said she can get me booked for an appointment with a different stylist free of charge. Two days later I got a voicemail saying they spoke to the stylist and it seems there was a miscommunication, so I'd have to pay the full price to book another appointment. I was very confused so I called back and explained everything AGAIN, and was told that the stylist and I are both saying different things. After going back and forth they agreed to honor what they told me about getting my hair fixed free of charge, but that I'd have to do it with the same stylist. This was an uncomfortable situation because I had to deal with the awkwardness of sitting in a chair having my hair dyed for hours by someone who basically lied to me and then was lying about the situation when I was originally promised an appointment with a different stylist. Regardless, I thanked them for accepting to fix my hair for free and accepted, hoping for the best. I thankfully ended up satisfied with my final result the second time, but this entire experience was very unnecessary, a huge waste of time, and infuriating. I hadn't left a review when this happened since they fixed the situation, but my friend also recently had to deal with the front desk at this salon changing agreed upon pricing and speaking to her unkindly. I was one of A&S original customers, from 1989 to 1997. When I moved back to Evanston, I went straight back there. My two stylists are long gone, so I tried someone new. The haircut was fair, but she seemed nice and I thought I could coach it better next time. Fast forward to last night: My daughter was with me, also seeing a stylist that was new to here. The stylist kept her waiting for 40 minutes, mine kept me for more than 20, 15 of which were spent with wet hair soaking my sweater on a cold night by drafty windows. My hair cut is not what I asked for and looks terrible. I had hoped to wear my new style confidentially to a job interview today and then not have to style it again until I travel this weekend for a wedding. Can't do either. Am about to go wash and dry it and hope I can make it look less than bad. Then I'll hit another salon, pay another $100 and have it fixed. My daughter's hair looks nice, but she had a terrible experience and her stylist looked bored the whole time--didn't talk to her or anything. This is a long way from the good old days with Lawrence. I have been to Art and Science on and off over the years. I had an awful haircut many years ago. I called the owner Paul who was gracious and offered to rectify things when my hair grew out. As a small business owner myself I thought this was excellent customer service. Fast forward to two weeks ago. I went to Paul for a haircut after a hiatus. I brought pictures and said I wanted it a little longer than the image as I wanted to still be able to tie my hair up in a ponytail. Trusting him fully we chatted through the haircut. I could not believe what he had done. Chopped my hair so short and looking nothing like the picture. I called and he agreed to trim some long unrequested angular pieces on my face. He did not apologize but obtusely admitted to screwing up. No money back, no offer to rectify the mess over time. He was I thought prior, a nice guy. Never setting foot in his salons again. George gave me the best haircut I've had in my entire life. I was able to sleep on it wet and wake up with amazing hair. This has never happened to me before in my life. The only downside was it was also the most expensive cut I've had in my life. It was $100 but you also get what you pay for. I have been a client at the Evanston location for 13 years and I have never had a bad experience. I have been seeing the same hair genius, Amy for my haircut the entire 13 years and she is by far the most talented stylist. She has this talent for knowing the best way to make me look good. I don't have to worry about remembering what to do with my hair or what products to use. She takes care of everything!! She doesn't try to sell me anything I don't need and has even helped me not make a hair mistake when I was feeling down and wanted to pull a Britney (aka cut all my hair off). She is honest and professional while just being an amazing human. You really can't get any better. For my color, I have had to see more than one person over the years due to scheduling. I only get color when I can have a trim on the same day so I started out seeing Amalia, then due to a scheduling problem I had, I switched to Celi and now I am seeing Jamie. All the color experts at Art and Science have the most advanced training available. They stay on the cutting edge of color care, knowing the latest trends and treatments. I have loved all my services from Amalia, Celi and Jamie and would recommend any of the color team. They are first class!! I also have a long standing date with an amazing esthetician named Margaux, who does my eye brow waxing. She is so amazing and talented. She has helped my eyebrows stay looking fresh and also rocks when it comes to hair care. I have gone to her for special event blow outs and she has this cool wave technique that makes my hair have beach waves and its so awesome. She rocks! The salon itself is so comfortable and spacious. The atmosphere is chill and they have good wifi. Beverages are offered while you wait. They have a great selection of magazine and hair books. The retail section is the largest I have ever seen in an expert salon. I love spending time here and work on my iPad or computer while I process. Just a really relaxing space. On top of the quality service, the staff is just really really nice. The front desk concierge team is so friendly!! They are smart and know about the products in case you have a question. I don't use the men's barber section but its really nice and the staff is super helpful. they have a full men's hair care range and the area has a real cool dude vibe away from the "lady" section which is really nice. A guy can get in and out and not have to sit next to ladies in foils LOL. Overall this is the best salon in the Chicagoland area. You can't get any better. I would definitely recommend coming here. I am pretty low maintenance when it comes to haircuts, salons, etc. so I wasn't looking for anything special but this place was definitely worth me trying something new. Don't be deceived by appearances/prices b/c it's definitely worth it. (It's basically the same price as an average salon but much more value for your money!) Yeefah was awesome! She gave me a great haircut but also addressed my hair issues and taught me how to manage my hair on my own. I had kinda given up on my hair but i am much more optimistic now. With a cool name like Art + Science and great reviews of the owner' haircuts, I headed off with tentative confidence to my local branch. I had a color or two there before, no problem, so I thought I'd try the cuts. The first haircutter I booked sported a clean, short pixie herself, so I thought if I showed her a photo of my previous European cut, she might possibly be able to copy it for me. And at 85 bucks, I felt it couldn't go far wrong. After a quick 15 minutes or less under the scissors, I knew it wouldn't be very interesting - and it wasn't. And certainly not worth the price. The second cutter I had was less expensive but I figured price didn't stand for much here, so why spend more. The look I walked out with was similar to the one you'd get by putting a bowl over your head and trimming around it. And very little effort, skill, or artistry involved. If A+ S would invest a little money in flying some stylists from overseas who could give these American some lessons, we'd all be a bit better off. My husband went in to Art + Science for a haircut last week. He had his hair cut at Steven Papageorge before and it turned out so perfect, but him being him, he decided to try a new salon. He has great hair, and it is shoulder length. The girl at Steven Papageorge did an awesome cut with an edgy, hip layered look which really popped. I begged my husband to go back to them, but no. Forward to Art + Science. When I say that this is the worst haircut he has ever had, I am keeping in mind the time he got drunk and decided to cut his own hair. It looks like a helmet in the back. It is boring and lifeless and looks idiotic. Matt singlehandedly took him from rocker chic to cashier at Dollar Tree chic. In 45 minutes. If you are a guy with great hair, or the significant other of a guy with great hair, for the love of God, please, please go to Steven Papageorge.
