I would say I'm a bit pickier than the average client. I've worked front desk at two salons, experimented quite a bit with my hair, and am a product junkie. It's not so much that I'm high-maintenance; I just know quality (or lack thereof) when I see it. That said, I will only go to Art + Science. I booked my first appointment with a Groupon and haven't looked back since. I started with Leigh Ann and wouldn't dream of seeing anybody else. She's great with layers, and is willing to talk through style changes. She's also the sweetest girl you'll ever meet. Fergie is a color genius. I had six years' worth of brown, black, and red dye in my hair. She turned it all around and gave me gorgeous blonde hair, without completely destroying its health. I regularly get compliments on the amazing color, and many think it's natural. Besides them, the rest of the staff seem great as well. The woman who typically shampoos my hair is very sweet and attentive. Chase once gave me a mask while I was waiting for my cut, and again, sweet and attentive, even though I wasn't his client. Frankie gave me an impromptu bang trim when Leigh Ann was busy. She didn't rush, did a great job, and was a pleasure to talk to. The front desk is great, too. No attitude or rushing. Also, I got my hair done here for a wedding I was standing in. Not only did she come in early for me (I hate that I'm not remembering her name), she did an amazing job. Everyone and their mother was complimenting me on it. At first I wasn't thrilled about paying extra for the hair bun thing, but I was definitely a fan of the result. To sum it up, I can't praise this place highly enough. All the stress of salon jumping is gone; I'm here to stay. read more

I've seen Yeefah three times so far and can't say enough good things about how she cuts my very curly hair. She knows how to work with it and has ideas to make it stylish, when you think a head of curls is the most boring thing on the planet. My sister has been getting her hair cut by Audrey for the past couple years. I finally decided to give Audrey a try and was so happy with the outcome! I was running late (doesn't help when it's a Friday afternoon and there's construction everywhere!) so I called ahead and told them I was about running 10 minutes behind. The receptionist warned me that if I showed up more than 15 minutes late I would most likely have to reschedule. When I finally make it in, 10 mintues late, the receptionist is a bit snobby and tells me, "I don't know if we can fit you in. Let me go check" A minute later, a bubbly Audrey comes over to get me and doesn't even care that I'm late. I tell her I want something different but at the same time I don't want my hair too short. I also asked her to help me do something to give my hair more volume. She ended up cutting about 3-4 inches...more than I originally envisioned but it looks so much better! She added what she calls "internal layers" to help give my hair some volume and texture. I loved that she understood how low maintenance and knew she wouldn't see me for a few months. No pressure to get any color or come back in a month for a trim! That's exactly the kind of girl I need! read more

Guys: Anthony is the man for haircuts and beard trims in Evanston. I just moved back to San Francisco after a year in Evanston and wish I could bring him along. He's a great barber - listens to what you want, asks questions, and checks in throughout the cut. He's super detailed and made sure everything was faded correctly and styled right before I left. He's also just a great person - easy to talk to and a genuinely chill guy who made an effort to get to know me more each time I went in. Last i had it was when mom gave me that littlegirl haircut when i was 7 or 8 and since then i have always been told it wont suit me - whether it was friends or stylists coz apparently I don't have a big enough forehead or whatever :( Cut to Sep 2014 like literally two decades later and you have Chase (the most awesome stylist I have met in a while) who is all for it and says "let's see how we can play with it"- what? I don't need to fight this one?!?! Yay! And he found the perfect balance of me not going too far away from my length yet giving me bangs that look awesome and were meant to be there... Woohoo! And Erica before him is just the dream for haircolor - such a great colorist. I had Elvis for color and Amanda for a cut. I have long curly hair that is curlier underneath than on top, so it's difficult to cut right. Amanda did an amazing job. She made me feel proud of my natural curl, and she styled my hair to look like the best version of what it would look like on a daily basis. The color Elvis gave me was amazing! I went to the salon over the summer, and I saw Frankie. She was super lovely, and I think she did an OK job. I made a follow-up visit for September 7, 2021. On September 6, I called numerous times to cancel the appointment as I did on September 7, 2021. Both days (nine calls total), I was unable to reach anyone or leave a voice message. Then I went to their website and sent them a message asking for the appointment to be canceled or if someone could give me a call back to have it rescheduled. On September 7, 2021, I received a call from Cris (front desk manager) in the early evening to inform me that I would be charged no-show fees. I explained to him that I was under the impression that he was calling me because of the message I sent to the salon, but he refused to listen. I felt as if I was calling Unemployment Office and finally got to someone who had no customer service skills and wasn't sure what to do. He was focused on charging me no-show fees. He stated he had not received anything from me. I asked him would it help if I sent him a screenshot from the online communication and calls, but he refused. When I asked to speak with someone in charge, he stated that he was in charge, sigh. I asked him to have his manager call him. That is yet to happen. As of this morning, there is a pending charge on my credit card for $38.50. So he went ahead and charged my card without first having his manager review the situation. I tried to reason with him, but he would not listen, and most of the phone conversation, he was talking over me. I told him that I would leave this review for the salon, dispute charges, and never set my foot to the salon that was otherwise gaining me as a regular customer because of him. I had a really bad haircut here recently. The stylist/barber did not ask me what i wanted and did not seek any input or validation during the entire haircut. I placed trust in him because i was a repeat customer and had gotten a few solid haircuts here with different stylists, including this one. But the result from this time is pretty tough to look at. My mom even made fun of me. There's a clear line around my head where buzzer was stopped and scissors started. Very frustrating -- for a $70 haircut, I would expect much better! I finally was a grown up and paid for a proper hair cut for my new first internship. Amanda cut my hair, and made it phenomenal. After exiting the salon multiple people commented on my hair cut from the barista at Starbucks to the salesman at Benefit, but I think the best one came from a little kid walking down the street with his mother. We passed on the sidewalk, and he turned around and said: "I like your haircut- it's super cool!" Then continued on his way. So thank you Amanda! Yeefah has been my stylist for years, so I take a great cut for granted. But once in awhile something happens to remind me that not everyone is lucky enough to have Yeefah help them look good. Sometimes about a week after a cut it will lose the great look Yeefah's personal touch gives it, but this last time I have been getting compliments almost two weeks later. I teach college part-time, and one of my students said in the middle of class that she couldn't stop staring at me, the cut fit my face so well. I have to admit having a girl half my age smiling at me all night definitely made my week. The next day, a friend at the gym asked if I had gotten my hair cut. He said the cut fit my face perfectly. I had requested an experienced technician who was skilled at styling a toddler though was assigned someone who left our son looking like a Japanese cartoon character ... all at the inflated price of $40 plus tip. Per instruction given, I did file a compliant via their website and eventually heard from from a manager who offered a redo - obviously, we couldn't wait. We will never go back and after chatting w/several friends who, too, encountered similar, this appears to be an ongoing issue. Lastly, Art + Science is a total sweatshop ... churn and burn. I had stopped coming in for a while when I lived in Niles, now back in Evanston & currently sitting with a hydrating hair masque & glass of red wine. They've been as accomodating as possible with my unpredictable work schedule. Elvis does great color & Cindi does an awesome job styling. Both take time to listen & offer suggestions. The *only* reason they get 4/5 stars is the maddening parking situation & that isn't really their fault (but validated parking would be nice!). I've never had much success in getting a haircut which 'works' for me. Either the cut is odd or it grows out so quickly that I need to get it cut again waaaaay too soon. Enter Matt from Art + Science in Evanston. He suggested a style, we moved forward and we've been able to craft each cut since as the hair grows out. As well, he easily transitioned from a 'summer' cut to a 'winter' cut for me, with much success. read more

Like this Evanston salon. Have been here 3 times so far. Once for a hair do for a wedding( best job ever by Alice, I have mermaid hair in length and it is thick/full...it turned out amazing. The past 2 times I have been here for baylage by Fergie. She's detail oriented and does a great job. After you sit with your color on a colorist in training tones your washes, tones, and blows out your hair. This is the reason why im not giving 5 stars IS the fact that my colorist is not applying the toner. The first colorist who applyed the toner and washed hair was Coal and she was awesome, this second trip was a little different. It was slopped on and roughly applyed by 2 girls. Will have to reconsider if i want to keep coming here due to this reason. I like continuity of care, dont like my hair color application to be a tag team effort . read more

Agnes is a rockstar! Agnes has been cutting my hair for years. My hair is curly and can be hard to tame. I used to go to a chain place by me for a cheap haircut and that is exactly what I got a cheap haircut. I truly believe you get what you pay for and Art & Science is no different. Tried to go from light golden blonde to natural, deep red at a beauty school. Ended up light pink/orange. Called and got a last minute consultation with Elvis. Lady on the phone was so helpful! She even called me back to let me know she explained the situation to Elvis and they could fit me in for an actual appointment three days later. Elvis did an excellent job. I absolutely love my hair! This is the place to go for hair for your wedding! Myself, two moms, a family friend, and 4 bridesmaids all got our hair done here on the big day. They had bagels and mimosas for us, and gave all of us special attention. I loved everyone's hair, but especially loved my own. Don't be scared away by the very expensive trial. It is definitely worth it! Yeefah is incredible and she will have you loving your hair. My hair looked exactly like I wanted it to, and it stayed up the whole night, even after hours of dancing. read more

I was very happy with my hair cut and color. The hair stylist and colorist were very helpful and kind. However, when I left the salon one of the employees harassed me. I was backing up my car when she started to bang on my window and started to yell at me about driving. I called the salon to tell them what was happening and they were apologetic and told me they would let the manager know. However, now a week later, the manager has still not reached out to me and I feel very wary of ever going back to the salon. I'm sorry to say that this one employee made me quite uncomfortable and a little scared, and without any management concerned it's ultimately leading me to find a different salon. read more

I've been to Art + Science twice now for a haircut and Leigh Ann is awesome. She asks me how I style my hair and takes the time to understand my hair type before she cuts it and the result is a perfect hair cut. She's really easy to talk with, too, so your time in the chair is fun. I decided I wanted an ombré my last visit, and was scheduled with Fergie. I've only colored my hair once or twice before, but Fergie put me at ease and was so great. My hair ended up being a little blonder than I wanted (my fault, I'm not a great hair communicator), so I went back and she toned it down perfectly. She recommended great ways to keep my color bright, so I feel really confident I'll love my hair for a while. I really like that the product isn't pushed on you here, everyone is so nice and laid back. I've finally found a salon I love and look forward to going back. read more

As a 50-something male, I had been going to a different salon for many, many years, for no particular reason. All I cared about is that the cut was fast and I looked okay. I don't like to have to think about my hair - out of the shower, towel it off, and go. So I went in to my old place for a cut on the Saturday before a Monday job interview, and... it was bad. Really. So I called Art & Science and asked if anyone could fit me in for a "repair" cut, and I was told that Matt specialized in men's hair, and had a time slot open, so I took it. Instead of just a "default" men's cut, Matt gave me a real style, one that is classic yet current, and which is very easy to deal with on my own. Matt's skills, and his attention to detail, have led to me receiving more compliments on my hair since I started with Matt than I have in all the time before. And I have to admit... that feels good! First time visitor of Art + Science. Overall, I enjoyed my service. I made a reservation and barely had to wait before getting seated, which is always a plus! It was my first time visiting, so I was assigned to whoever was available. My stylist was knowledgeable and was great at giving suggestions on how to cut my hair, especially since I didn't have a clear idea of how I wanted to get my hair cut. My stylist was also really quick. The whole experience took me a little less than an hour. The price is definitely on the steeper side (paid around $70 in total), but this reflects the quality and service. read more
