It was my first visit at this location and I was scheduled to see Emmett for my haircut. I passed on all my woes about my hair (fine, thin, no body), especially post chemo, but he was not daunted. He took so much care and time in cutting my hair, and even after blow drying, kept making snips here and there to get as close to the picture I provided as possible. I've waited a couple of weeks to write this review to see how dealing with this cut would be. It's been great! It falls easily into place after drying and even when I just air dry, it has a fullness I've never had before. He gave me tips on drying and styling as well. Needless to say, I am very impressed and will, of course, be asking for Emmett again. read more

Had my first cut with Ronnie today and the experience was wonderful! The front desk greeted me, took my coat, and served me a drink while I waited for my stylist, Ronnie. Then Ronnie came in with a great attitude. We sat together to discuss what I wanted for my cut. She gave me suggestions and went through details on how much to take off. When we agreed she concocted scented oils and gave me a brief shoulder and scalp massage to relax. It was so unexpected! I am a mom and a mini spa day was icing on a new-do day! Then I got my hair washed and treated, but the difference is they also provided a hot towel on my hair. It felt so nice! We moved back to start cutting and the conversation was so easy going that at times I forgot I was getting my hair trimmed. Eventually another woman came by and asked if I wanted a brief hand massage. I wondered if it was an add on and asked to make sure. Nope, just a nice salon gesture that added to my mini-spa day! After the cut and styling, Ronnie asked if I wanted anything to purchase in products. I told her what I was looking for, thinking I'd buy at least 2 products. Instead she said there's a product they make that does both of what I was looking for (a purple treatment and a conditioning mask treatment in one!) I was relieved feeling I wasn't getting taken advantage of with upsells. In fact, she told me about the return policy, if I told others to come in we'd both get discounts, and she gave me a bunch of free samples to try. Now for the most important part: Besides all these things, (and there a few other details I am forgetting to include) I am so pleased with the cut and style! Ronnie absolutely deserves her title as a master stylist here! I made sure I made another appointment to return. TLDR: I highly highly recommend coming here for a cut. I am new to the neighborhood and needed a refresh haircut. I was interested in this salon due to the high reviews and it is in walking distance. My hair is pin straight, all one length, to my elbows. I wanted a little layering and more of a wispy, modern look. I've had my hair for 50 years and it is amazing still and so I wanted to do some self care and try a new place. I explained to the front desk what I was looking for. I also mentioned that I had a not too good experience my last haircut because my hair was cut uneven and the layers didn't show through. The front desk decided to set up my appt with a new stylist. When I came to the appt and met her, she was really nice. Everyone was really nice. However, I was worried because I didn't like the stylists hair and I was worried that our style wasn't compatible. There is nothing wrong with a choppy looking mullet but I don't want that to happen to my hair. In any case, I proceeded to trust the expert. Despite her having really nervous energy, I told myself to 'just go for it'. I showed the stylist my inspo photo. There were layers, there were bangs. It was basically a layered cut. I explained that I have a short forehead, small head and pointed out and suggested she may have to accommodate for that to make me look good. I trusted she understood that. She shampooed my hair and then once in the chair, she went straight for my bangs and cut them wet. Once they were snipped, they popped up above my eyebrows making them just one inch long due to my short forehead. Horrifying. Elbow length hair to an inch length without much thought? I looked extremely stupid. This is not what I wanted. She didn't trim my hair, but just took chops on the sides (not how I know layers to be cut). I had to stop her and tell her this is not what I want. She was too focused on the picture and not able to translate it to me, the human. She ran off to get someone to finish me because I was so upset. This next person came up, seemingly annoyed and finished me up- but with no style. It made me feel guilty on top of stupid looking. They just wanted to rush me out because they had other people in line. Which I understood, but I just have stupid page-boy bangs now- NOTHING like how I discussed or brought in a picture. I am so upset 2 weeks later. This turned from self care to self bomb. I am not confrontational so i just paid and GTFO. I even tipped because I had 3 people looking at me as I paid. But I HATE what happened to my hair. Now, no style and I have to grow out one inch baby bangs. It's upsetting. I have done long hair, pixie hair, bangs- everything. I don't usually have fear. But this looks stupid and now I have to mousse my hair back everyday like I'm on freaking Wall Street in the 80s. Not what I wanted. Oh, and I mentioned I am a mom of toddlers and don't have a lot of time in the morning. What does she do? Start introducing me to products and insisting I get a diffuser and crunch my straight hair into waves every morning to accommodate this dank cut (instead of doing a cut for it). Totally not what I was looking for. Not what the picture called for. I knew I could have done the cut but I knew I didn't have to do all that. I can't do all that. She is a pro at everything from helping you pick a cut that suits your style, to recommending products for your hair type, to creating an unbelievably relaxing experience every time you visit. Extremely disappointing experience. I came in for a consultation for a new cut and color. I really liked the stylist Dalayne and we came up with a great game plan for my hair. She asked the receptionist Genevieve to schedule me for a haircut first and color a couple days later. The first haircut appointment Dalayne had was a month from now and the first color appointment she had was 2 1/2 months from now. I then asked if i could do both at the haircut appointment and was scheduled for a month from now. Shortly after booking I was sent a text that I couldn't do both on the same day and I could schedule with another stylist for the haircut ahead of time and then do the color in a month with Dalayne. I was referred to Dalayne and had a consult with her and wanted to have both done with her. I went back and tried to make suggestions and see how we could make this work, but Genevieve was not accommodating at all and did nothing to try to get me in, it was horrible customer service from her! She just starred blankly at me, offering no options. As most woman, I'm sure we can't wait over 2 1/2 months for a color appointment. I should have been told when they made my consult that Dalayne was booked out for 2 1/2 months before wasting my time and setting expectations of excitement. I would not recommend this salon to anyone! I hope they work on their customer service issues! read more

They kept trying to charge me more then it need it to be. Yes they gave me discount and stuff. But the manager are not flexible and understanding of their clients. I had to fight for stuff every time I went. I called asked for a person with a $55 dollar hair cut booked me with a $78 dollar person. Tryed to cancel and couldn't they want me to charge $19 dollars to cancel. I would not go their hair cuts are great but their mangers and how they run things is not. read more

Gordons Salon of Evanston update for July 17th, 2022. Two mgmt staff members at Gordons contacted me after learning of my postings regarding my less than pleasing hair styling experience at the salon. They were effusively empathetic of my hair styling experience, that left me with too much hair taken off, which will require about 4 months to grow back. However, one unfortunate experience should not define a salon as a whole. The mgmt members stated that there is an ongoing critique and advanced training of all stylists to address the nuances of customer relations and satisfaction, so that Gordons high standards are maintained. They welcome all customer feedback pursuit to these high standards. I offered the suggestion that when it comes to styling men's hair, especially those with longish and thick hair, the stylist should ascertain if the customer is just wanting mere maintenance to his hair to prevent hair growth over the ears and slightly reducing the length of hair on the back of the head. Or, if the customer wants a standard type overcall trimming of the hair on top, sides, and back of the head. The golden rule of hair styling is that it is better to leave too much hair, than to take too much off which cannot be undone. Keeping in mind that the majority of men do NOT want the " I just got a haircut look." It should be noted that for skilled stylists, it should not take more than 20-30 minutes to style and/or cut a man's hair. There is no need to create more clock time than is needed, regardless if the fee is $20 or $200. Men going to high end salons count on more skill, good judgment, and no misinterpretation of what they desire for their hair styling. I am given to believe that Gordon's will benefit from my experience, as there is always learning to be gleaned in any profession. A hair home at last. I'm on my third haircut here with the rock star team of Ronnie on hair and Lexa on color. Lexa created such a beautiful color for my single-process needs that required ingenuity and skill not to turn red as my brown hair always has when it encounters color. Red no more. The formula is so good that the lovely Delayne was able to step in to replicate when Lexa was away. Delayne even complimented Lexa's creative formula. Ronnie is a precision cutter with beautiful taste. It's like she sees you at your best and then makes it happen. It's like in her bones. My short, thin, aging hair is sassy and well behaved under Ronnie's care. I so get compliments. The salon is lovely; the products are great. They've gone way past old Aveda. They work as a team. I received a haircut and a S4TEC KERATIN hair treatment from him. The haircut was perfect for my coarse hair- he cut my hair while my hair was dry! Since I usually air dry my hair - he said this was the best way for me to see how a haircut with my coarse hair would really define my face- and he was completely right. He has vast knowledge of different products and techniques that would help my hair be healthy, give it a great look, and be manageable. The S4Tec keratin treatment was perfect for my coarse hair. I haven't seen my hair look so healthy, sleek, manageable, and stylish in years if not decades. The treatment was simple and the results were fantastic.
