After visiting multiple times, a review is overdue. Plenty of metered parking during the week, I had a scheduled appointment with Lee to get my mop chopped. Yes, MOP. It's unruly like someone's step children. I'm guilty of just letting it grow out then complaining when it gets to be too much. I should be better about this, but alas. I was taken back for the usual wash & brought up front. Lee's AHMAZINGG as always! I have a FULL head of hair & her skills are unmatched. You can tell she truly cares about ensuring you get exactly what you want. Even better? I wasn't in the chair for hours for a haircut. I've never had that happen. Ever. It's a chill vibe inside, folks coming & going & drama free. I checked my watch when I was done & completely shook. Not even an hour & there I was, feeling refreshed with flowy, shorter hair. Prices are affordable & it was fairly easy to get an appointment. Definitely will be returning for Lee & the fantastic service. Thank you!!! read more

Kami Salon gave me the best haircut I've had in a while! I made an appointment online and the price included a relaxing wash, cut, and styling. So many places these days are trying to nickel and dime every part of a haircut (e.g. charging for a blow dry), but Kami Salon is so ethical and so meticulous. Very clean studio and I appreciated being able to lock my belongings in a locker in the back. I asked for my thick hair to be cut in layers and get thinned out a bit and they exceeded my expectations. There is a cheaper cash price versus card so keep that in mind, but it was such a reasonable price regardless. I'm definitely coming here for my next hair cut! read more

The only salon I will trust my hair with in the Northshore area. My hair is really thick and course so American salons struggle to work with my head shape and hair. But Alfie did a great job. The pricing is a bit high, even with the cash discount. It was $43 for women for long hair, and then with tax and tip it ended up being $55 total, but you receive great service and attention to detail. There's paid parking around the area. The inside of the salon is very clean and organized. read more

There's a guy with glasses, he's 5 stars. But then there's a guy with a dirty blonde mushroom cut, he's 1 star. His customer service is bad. I wanted bangs only, and even gave them the luxury of saving time by not needing to wash my hair before hand. I showed photos of the bangs, and another guy also relayed the consultations of making it just a little bit longer than the photo. He then says to himself "face framing", to which I assume he was going to do bangs and then face frame the ends to connect it to rest of my hair. He cuts my hair, it was fast which is great. But then my "bangs" are still below my upper lip. I ask if it should be shelter and he tells me it'll be bad and then lifts my bang super high from my root and tells me it'll be too short and tells me some other reason i didn't understand. I have thinning asian oily hair so my hair won't really scrunch up after washing. Anyway, so he blow dried it and there's literally no volume added by the "bangs" given. The most it did was do a swooping motions on the side. Here's the worst part, he abruptly leaves. I have hair all over my face. So I took the dyson and blew my face then wiped it before paying. My dad facetimed me and asked if I got a cut and i said yes my bangs, he said "i don't see anything different how much did you pay". I said $10 with cash.... he said "that's so expensive for nothing happening!". I'll give another stylist a chance next time. For now, I took some kitchen shears and cut off an inch or so more to shorten my hair on my nose to at least make the bangs look like bangs. read more

As a NYC transplant, i have high standards for a stylist. I can truly say this place is solid. There was an older man who washed my hair (I didn't get his name) but he was awesome! He spent time washing and even massaged my neck / scalp for a bit. I got my hair cut and styled by Lee. I particularly loved how she really took the time to touch and feel the weight of my hair. I have really thick Asian hair, (more on the coarse side) so, when I showed Lee the photo of what I wanted, she gave me her opinions on how to best achieve that look, since I had some short layers already(which were not in the pics). We ended up being a little creative but I loved the end look. Pay in cash for a discount, there's also a discount if you have a student ID. read more

Jeff gave me a great haircut and the price for the services were affordable. Easy to get an appointment and additional discount if paid in cash--I didn't have cash but still the price was affordable. Jeff adjusted the height of the chair and direction; I didn't have to put my head down as much compared to other salons. After getting my haircut, my hair felt lighter and created less mess in my home. However, if you like to chat with your stylist, you might want to go somewhere else unless you speak Mandarin. read more

The customer service experience at Kami is truly unparalleled. After an initial unsuccessful Japanese digital perm (in the likely case you've never gotten a perm, it's a long 4-5 hour experience), I was pretty disappointed and called Kami Salon the following week to see if I could schedule another appointment. Before I'd even explained my situation, they welcome me back the very next day. When I arrived, Maylin and Angela checked my hair and confirmed they'd need to re-do the process at no charge. They even promised me that they'd cleared their afternoon schedule to give me their full attention. While this second attempt was unsuccessful due to a machinery issue, I was so grateful that they willingly stayed overtime to help. I came back two days later once the machine was fixed. Luckily, my final visit was a success! Maylin and Angela were so attentive and the whole staff stepped in to make sure the process was seamless. I was out of their in less than 4 hours! Even though I insisted, they refused any tip for all their effort and actually thanked me for coming back and letting them fix my hair. They even offered me a free hair treatment for my time. I was absolutely blown away by the entire Kami staff's customer service and positive attitude. I have never experienced such great customer service from a salon and highly encourage you to visit. Other things to note: COVID safety here is top notch! They take your temperature at the door and everyone wears masks. They do 10% off for cash payments and offer tea/water. There are also lockers and a coat rack in the back for your belongings. read more

I'm new to Evanston. Had a haircut at Kami for the first time today and it was a positive experience. Jeff was my stylist and he was very skillful. I wanted an angled long bob and showed him a photo of a previous cut. He understood immediately what I wanted without me having to explain a whole lot--and he delivered exactly what I wanted. Had lunch with a colleague afterward and she commented that my hair "looks fabulous!" I will definitely come back. Price was fairly reasonable for the level of service offered. What was slightly confusing to me was at payment, the person at the front desk informed me that there was a discount for cash payment. He just gave me a total number but I'm not entirely sure whether that included tip or not. Perhaps they could explain the price breakdown better to new customers who are not used to paying by cash. Next time I will let them know upfront that I would like to include a tip in the cash payment. read more

Got my hair cut and highlights touched up by Jeff, and I love it! I wanted to go much shorter to a pixie bob, I showed him photos and he knew exactly what I was going for. He has serious hair cutting skills! He removed the excess density in my hair so the cut didn't look bulky, and was really thorough, did a dry cut, a cut after the wash, and after drying. As for the color, I wanted to tone down the brassiness I had with my grown out highlights as well as blend them into my roots and he did exactly that! Before this, I went to another salon that was way pricier and the result was nowhere near as ashy or light. I think some salons will not give you what you want the first time so you will have to come back for another session, this is not one of those places. And the cut includes a blow dry/style, which is great because most places charge a crazy price just for that. My total here was around $180 after the 10% off cash discount. Very worth the experience and results. The place was pretty busy (Saturday morning) and I noticed all the staff members working together to make things efficient, like working on clients while another was busy, so no one was waiting around too long. Also shampoo they used smelled soo good and high quality. Overall loved the vibes and will definitely be back! read more

Always wanted to go to a salon that understood Asian hair while knowing the color that suits my haircut. Luckily, kami really checked all the boxes! The salon took my temperature upon entry and made sure I was comfortable while ensuring I follow the COVID guidelines of wearing a mask. Extremely pleased with the result although it did take 3 hours - to remove the previous coloring and give the desired balayage effect that is hard with my hair. Definitely recommend! read more

Kami Salon, I still love you. I recently came in to get hair that was almost the buttocks chopped into a chic lob. Kami Salon, as always, came through! Upon arrival, I was greeted by a kind man wearing what I can only imagine as a warm smile underneath his mask. He ushered me to the back of the salon where I received a hair wash and condition coupled with a quick scalp massage. Simply, heavenly. A hair wash at the salon is one of the simple pleasures of life. Following the wash, I showed my stylist Jack a few images that I was hoping to achieve. He deftly chopped off my mangly mess of hair and transformed it into the lob of my dreams. He was precise with the symmetry, naturally thinned the bottom of my hair, and gave it generous volume. I left the salon feeling fresh to death. The true sign of a good haircut is after a wash and blowdry at home to see if the style held up. Well, I can attest that my hair looked just as good at home as it did when I exited Kami Salon. The stylists of Kami Salon are wizards (you're a wizard 'Arry)! I will never betray Kami. read more

Decent for the price, need to make reservations because there weren't any walk-ins available on the weekends.

As an Asian, this is the only place I trust in the Evanston/North Shore-ish area to cut my hair. Other places sometimes struggle with Asian hair (it's very thick and straight), but after having most of my haircuts here for the last two years, I now implicitly trust Kami. However, even if you don't have Asian hair, there are a few reasons to like this place. First, every haircut feels like a spa service. They shampoo your hair before and after and also include what they call a "scalp massage". Once you start getting your scalp massaged during every haircut, it's hard to go anywhere else. Second, prices are very reasonable if you are a student and have cash! After the discount, the prices are competitive with nearby hair salons but with better service! One thing worth mentioning: most of the stylists here are native Chinese speakers, though all speak varying degrees of English (ranging from passable to fluent). If you are worried about the language barrier and/or plan to communicate something very complicated, I would call ahead and try to request someone who is more fluent in English. read more

Hair wash was thorough. Stylist did not introduce himself. Came in requesting a hush cut and bang trim. I had been growing out an undercut, but the top of my head had shoulder length hair. Despite my instructions prior to the appointment to keep my face framing bangs long and keep the length, the stylist cut off 6+ inches of hair. I was horrified. Then, a translator was brought in halfway through the cut. Where was the translator BEFORE he started cutting hair? Styled my hair in a way that did NOT resemble reference picture. I could have achieved the same style if I put a bowl over my head and cut it myself. I am a woman, but I looked like a man. Completely ignored my requests for a bang trim. Parts of my hair were uneven. I had to have my appointment finished by a different stylist. Left appointment tearful. Was not charged for service (thank you). I cannot recommend this salon. Go to Gordon Salon instead. I will have to regrow my hair. read more

First visit to this salon - Shampoo and style today with Lee. Walked out with exactly the style I asked for. Lee has a light touch - very gentle with the tangles and keeps the dryer heat comfortable. Excellent salon and stylish. We have been coming here for many years. We still come here even though we live in another state when we come to visit family and friends. They are always busy. Be sure to schedule an appointment in advance. We had appointment for three people, and I decided to get a haircut while waiting. Jeff was very friendly and able to squeeze me in. They wash your hair before and after the cut at no additional charge or part of the cut, which is great for the price. The price is very reasonable and affordable. Meter parking is available along the street via app for $2 for 2 hours. The meter guy was giving out a ticket when we got there. Be sure to pay for your parking. Highly recommend Kami Salon for all ages and styles. read more

Okay, I just moved to Evanston. I had a hairstylist from Asia who was the best, so I was specifically looking for an Asian salon, yes I am Caucasian Lol If you never had an Asian stylist you need to get one immediately! Lol For real, the style and the attention to detail is incomparable to any stylist I have ever had and my hairstylist "LEE" is bomb.com! She was amazing!!!! My hair looks a thousand times better then I could of ever imagined. The price is competitive to other salons. Mine was in the higher end because I had A LOT done. My hair was jacked up so there was a lot of fixing that had to be done. Nevertheless, I would recommend this salon to everyone, and this is a girl coming from Los Angeles, CA so I know a good hairstylist from a bad one. Lol With that being said come here and get you hair done you won't be disappointed. read more

Booked an appointment with Maylin based on the reviews and she did not disappoint! I was nervous about getting the haircut after a horrible experience with a different place, but Maylin put my nerves at ease by taking great care with my hair. She worked quietly and methodically to fix my choppy layers into a sleek, perfectly layered medium cut. Only qualm about the salon was that it was quite busy and I waited over 30 minutes after my appointment time before someone even washed my hair. Other than that, I'm super happy with the result and it was well worth the wait. read more

I was really excited to come here because of all the fantastic Yelp reviews. But unfortunately my experience was very different from the others on here. I went here to get a haircut here on my wedding day (a Covid wedding, that had to be like 5 people vs an actual wedding), since I didn't need anything glamorous. My experience here was pretty poor. Yes, they washed my hair, cut it, and blow dried it. But the entire time, my hairdresser tried to pressure me, multiple times, to get deep conditioning while I was there. She also "tried" to make conversation, without actually caring about the response. At the end of the day, I felt like I was essentially an ATM to her, and she was just trying to figure out other ways to make more money. It sounds like there are some rockstars here, but there are also duds. And unfortunately I got a dud, and worse yet, I forget her name, so I'm of no help to you all, fellow Yelpers. But note, that the salon is small, the owner was standing there, I was the only other client in there for most of my visit, and nothing was said to improve the situation. read more

Amazing hair salon. This is my Go-To place. For so long living in Evanston, I've tried almost all of the barber shops around and they were subpar until this one. Amazing service. I have never felt so pretty. Ive struggled with finding a new hair stylist as no place I go to ever does what I want or better. BUT - this place was FANTASTIC! Preface: I'm an Asian girl, been looking for a place in Evanston that can cut and style my hair properly. Went to Kami for the first time upon recommendation from a friend and was extremely happy when I left with a fresh spring cut! I walked in without making an appointment, and Lee, one of the hair stylists, was glad to take me without hesitation when I described the kind of style I wanted. They quickly directed me to the back area to hang up my coat and put my belongings in lockers with keys - so secure and amazing service. Then, I was led to the chairs to get my hair washed. Reminiscent of hair salons in Asia, I was very happy (hair cuts should always come with washes first!). I had a bit longer than shoulder length hair, with the remains of a perm from 8 months ago. I asked for a short stylish spring cut, above my neck. I brought in a photo of my friend with the cut I wanted, but she's blonde and has a different hair texture so I asked Lee what she thought would look good on me. She talked me through her considerations with my complexion, hair texture, and face shape. She herself has short hair and dyed hair, so I was reassured that she had personal and professional experience. During the cut, Lee and I chatted about our various hair experiments which was enjoyable :) she finished cutting, dried my hair, and did very detailed meticulous cuts to make sure it was even all around. I appreciated her attention to detail. Have walked away from MANY salons feeling extremely upset, but at Kami, I felt like a newer better version of myself. Thanks Lee!! Will be back. read more

There aren't enough stars for me to give this place! I have Asian hair and I've tried so many highly recommended and expensive salons and no one does a better job on Asian hair than the salons in Chinatown. Well I am so happily mistaken. This salon in Evanston, specializing in Asian hair, will rival those salons in Chinatown! Jack did an amazing cut and color! But EVERYONE in the shop was so nice and jumped in to work on my hair. And they were genuinely excited for me. Even Ken the owner would jump in and said "I want your hair to be perfect!" If you have Asian hair GO!!! I can't wait to go back! read more

2018 UPDATE: ATTENTION ALL ASIAN WOMEN INTERESTED IN GOING BLONDE! Yes, I'm talking to you. You know who you are. Don't deny that you've never considered what you'd look like with different hair. Now what's kept you back? Society? Things are changing! Parents? You're legally an adult! Money? Well have got good news for you! I've been a loyal loyal customer of Ken's for years, and as always, he pairs excellent craftsmanship with affordable prices. This drastic color change was no exception. I paid $300 total (including a massive, elation-induced tip) for color, cut, and styling. YEAH THAT'S RIGHT WHAT AN AMAZINGLY GOOD DEAL! I've gone to salons that charge me waaaaay more than that for just highlights! Fear that it won't turn out? Y'all, this is when a photo is worth a bajillion words. As the goddess Constance Wu once said on Fresh Off the Boat: "Look at my hair!" No but seriously, look at my hair. It's amazing. Your hair could be amazing too. Don't be like me and wait over a decade to do it. Do it now! ---- Omg an Asian salon in Evanston. Be still my heart. Usually I encounter major struggles trying to decide if I want to wait XX months before I go back to home to my trusted hairdresser, pay $$$ at some salon for a mediocre job (after the hairdresser stops panicking once I sit down), or trek for 2 hrs to Chinatown just to get someone who won't leave my hair looking like a hot, uneven mess. Asian hair is hard to cut, and given that I have the equivalent of three people's hair, I've literally had people take breaks in the middle. Yes, life is so difficult. Thank the (Asian) gods then for Kami! Skilled technicians, convenient locations, and cheap...best combination ever! Ken is absolutely amazing, and does his best to make you feel welcomed as soon as you walk in. The inside is super clean and has a great selection of songs playing in the background (at a reasonable level). They offer wildcard discounts for students too! As well as a cash discount, though they accept credit cards now too. My hair looks beautiful and I have extra to buy a new outfit to match. Win! Everyone. Go here now. I'm usually the haircut every 5 months girl. Now I'm converted :). read more

I'm a fan. The pricing is incredibly reasonable and they offer student discounts. The staff are bilingual so as a non-Chinese speaker I was able to converse with the staff easily in English. I had previously called in for an appointment so they knew I was coming. Once I arrived, I was immediately taken care of and given a shampoo/conditioner treatment, which was fantastic by the way. Then I was taken to a hair station to be met with stylist Ken. Ken was incredibly nice to me and knew exactly what I wanted when I was explaining to him in broken salon terms. I came prepared with a couple reference pictures to get a visual across as well, but he mostly already knew what I had envisioned. That was one of the reasons why I chose Kami instead of nearby high-end salons, with consideration to the staff being Asian, they have more expertise and experience with Asian hairstyles and hair type. Previously I had been going to various places and not ever really getting the results I wanted, due to inexperience working with my type of hair (Asian, it just grows out differently than Caucasian hair at short lengths). But yea! As I was getting my fresh cut from Ken, he was very considerate and really took care of me and my hair professionally. It was a really good experience. The end result was fantastic! I ended up getting a popular style in Korea called the 2-Block Cut, which is essentially an undercut with the crown hair kept at a longer length. When blowndry and combed out the top hair looks a bit like a bowl cut. However with this cut, the hair is easily styled up. Essentially, this cut is one of the more popular ones in Asia for the past couple years and more recently, esp due to the rise of KPOP. I'm so happy Ken knew what I was looking for and had the expertise and mastery to flawlessly execute. I definitely recommend this salon to anyone looking for a reasonably priced and styled hair cut! read more
