Odd set of events: 1st haircut with Martha was uneven, but I chalked it up to me asking her (1st visit) to follow the lines of my previous hairdresser (I moved). 2nd cut was good. 3rd cut was crazy different from the look we had talked about, and I left there upset. However, called back three weeks later, as it had grown out and was cute. Spoke to Martha and made an appt. Walked in three weeks later; Martha ignored me completely, and a young man named Israel said he'd be cutting my hair. I was never going back again, as I felt she was unprofessional; however, Israel gave a great cut! Walked in today, on my appt., and he had not written me down in the book. When I spoke to Martha about it, I said it felt a little weird that she had passed me off to someone else, and then he forgot to write me down...First she stated she had an emergency when I had come in the last time (though she was doing someone else's hair), then she stated I didn't ask for her when I called, THEN she stated, as I said it felt like not a good vibe from there, that I was upset the last time I had gotten my hair cut....which was it? An emergency? That she didn't know it was me calling? I explained who I was on the phone. There was no way she didn't know. She ignored me when I walked in, and was cutting someone else's hair. Recently, my salon experiences have been less than desired. It's seemed like every hair stylist around town has been an older woman who only wants to sell you some other service and will make you feel guilty when you don't get them. I've found myself walking outside feeling annoyed that I've paid an exorbitant amount for services that just didn't add up to my expectations. Margo at Frida's has renewed my faith in being able to go to a salon and get exactly what I'm looking for. My hair looks terrific and I couldn't be happier. Added plus? I have been to the Frida Hair Studio twice and it is absolutely fantastic! Marta is warm, friendly, and very very good at cutting hair. She remembered how I liked my hair cut and made suggestions about hair care and styling. She doesn't rush you through your hair cut and makes sure that you are satisfied with your cut. The only two things I would give you a heads up about are that sometimes they run a little late with appointments (because they are focusing on quality!) and they only accept cash. I've been going regularly to a stylist in one of those fancy brand name high end franchises and paying the price. I saw Frida's open about a year ago and wanted to check her out but was too chicken. However, I finally called for an appointment today and they got me in within an hour. I had Margo and she was great. She's professional and experienced and my haircut is every bit as good as the expensive ones. The salon is neat, clean, and quiet. I will be switching to Frida's! P.S. I went here yesterday for a trim and had a great time. The girls were super nice, gave me some advice for covering up the terrible henna dye job I have as well as a sample of Moroccan oil. At my last (more expensive) haircut they put in way too many layers and too high up. (I have no ponytail anymore!!) But, Frida's helped to blend the layers so as my hair grows out it will look better. The only reason they get four instead of five is because they saw me 25 minutes after my appointment was scheduled (making me late to a meeting) and forgot to brush all the hair snippets off of me. I recently left the Midwest which means I've been without access to my favorite hair stylist. I am a creature of habit and have followed this woman to several salons - she does a fabulous job and I've always been pleased with my cuts and her service. It came time that I needed to get a hair cut so I referred to yelp for a salon in my vicinity. After reviewing this salon, I made an appointment. When I walked into the salon and was caught off guard - the salon is very outdated. I had to take a deep breath because I was a little turned off and I immediately thought about walking out. I was a bit early and had to wait a few minutes so I took a seat. There was music playing and I felt like I was in a fist pumping club - music was bad, loud and I found out later, directly above your head when you are in the chair. I have very long hair and I needed about an inch off the bottom. The woman who cut my hair was pleasant and asked a lot of questions about how I wanted my hair cut. I told her that I wanted to trim the ends and a little bit of layering on the back ends. I felt confident that she heard me. She did a great job washing my hair and it was very relaxing. She was pretty efficient cutting my hair and I wasn't in her chair for longer than 30 minutes. After she was done cutting my hair, she asked me if I wanted to see the back of my hair. I immediately said to myself "see the back already? You haven't even dried my hair". But she was serious! So I took a look and then asked her that I wanted to see the cut dry. So she proceeded to dry the TIPS of my hair for a few minutes. Then asks me if I'd like to see the back of my hair again. It was apparent that she wasn't going to blow dry my hair and at that point, I just wanted to leave. I let my hair dry and checked out the cut - I am not very happy with it but it's gonna have to do. I don't ever cut my hair in a V and that's how it turned out. I mean it's just hair but it really sucks when you get something you don't want. I was charged $25 for the services I received - which was a shampoo and cut. However, I looked later on their website and it lists $20 for those services. When I found this out, I was a little upset. But then again, I'm pretty sure I got what I paid for and I won't be making another visit. read more

I can't say enough great things about this place. Seriously. I joined Yelp solely to review this place. Martha and Margo are the best. Very nice, super accommodating, and you really can't beat their prices. My boyfriend and I have been going here for about two years (him a little longer than I), and we never leave disappointed. Margo does my hair, and always seems to know what I want without having me having to be super specific. She is very meticulous, which is exactly what I want in a hairstylist. Martha does my eye brow threading, which of course is slightly painful (by nature), but she is a true pro. She even puts a cooling lotion on my eyebrows afterwards, which no other salon has ever done. It's amazzzing. I love the ambiance of the place as well. It doesn't feel stuffy like when you walk into Art & Science. And I never feel like my (poor, in need of love) hair is being judged. I saw a lady flip out in there once because she came in for a simple blow dry and then started adding on additional (time consuming) services. The lady was being a total snob about that fact that she had already put Margo way behind with her other clients (my boyfriend and I, who, in fairness, didn't mind waiting) and ended up leaving even though Margo was being calm and accommodating all of her requests. I had an awesome experience with Frida! I have medium-length blonde hair and have never had highlights I've actually liked - they always look striped or brassy or completely unnatural, and they were done at high-end salons. I had a consultation with Frida about what I was looking for in both color and cut, and I liked her suggestions. She explained everything really clearly and made me feel confident that I was in good hands. I was right! My hair is exactly what I was hoping for, both the color and the cut. The highlights look so natural and the color is perfect. She used texture and long layers to make my cut awesome too. Really great place - Marta is great, the price is cheap (cheaper than most of the places in Evanston), and they do a great job of listening to what you're interested in doing with your hair. I basically flashed a photo of my boy Jake Gyllenhaal, said "Yeah, like this", and walked out 30 minutes later with exactly the hair cut I envisioned, haha! Have visited a few times since and not happy with customer service. The atmosphere is tense and not inviting or friendly. Extremely hard to make appointments as no one answers the phone, and once you have to reschedule twice you are "not allowed" to make any more appointments... very difficult for a busy person to rely on walk in availability. I have just returned from Frida Hair Studio and I am VERY happy with my hair. I am picky when it comes to hair cuts and particular about the way I like my hair cut. The main problem I usually face is that hair stylists are somewhat sloppy and inaccurate, leaving patches of hair not thinned or just cut unevenly. I always notice when things like that happen, even when other people don't, and it bugs the hell out of me. I worked with Marta, who took time to understand what I wanted and was very meticulous and precise. I agree with the previous reviews, the place may not seem like a high-end salon, but I'd rather prefer paying a very reasonable price for a great cut to leaving three times the amount for all the fancy things that do not help my hair look better. read more

I came here for a haircut awhile back, and it was one of the worst haircuts I have ever received. I have long, thick hair and all I asked for was that she cut off a few inches and layer it so that my hair would be feel lighter (pretty simple IMO). I ended up with practically a blunt cut, which confused me afterwards and didn't mention anything. It was $35 for wash/dry/cut, which was more expensive than Asha during their half off services sale, so in retrospect I really regretted coming here. I went in for a haircut and Margo cut my hair. My hair came out uneven and unblended in the front to the point that I couldn't deal with the cut, so I called and asked whether my haircut could be fixed. Marta was incredibly kind, she listened to what needed to be fixed and methodically and skillfully gave me a great cut. She had my hair straightened to make sure that it would lay properly, checked what my hair looked like, talked with me at each step to make sure that what she was going to do was ok, and fixed the cut. Margo washed and straightened my hair before Marta cut it, and she was very careful and gentle, and gave me an incredibly effective blowout. I have naturally curly/wavy hair, and my hair remained perfectly straight for days afterward. I truly appreciate the great haircut, and that they were so kind and professional about fixing the previous cut. Some tips: 1. You will need an appointment, you can call to set it up. 2. If you have more complicated hair, such as hair that is wavy/curly, ask for Marta. She is very careful and skillful and can give an incredible haircut. I would recommend Marta in general as well as she is very good at what she does. 3. Women's haircuts at Frida Hair Studio start at $40 and the price increases by hair length (about $5 more for hair falling below shoulders, $10 more for waist length). I would say Frida Hair Studio's Yelp price rating may be more $$ than $. 4. If there is something wrong with your cut, Frida Hair Studio will fix the cut if you call within a week of your appointment. 5. General tips for any haircut!: Always tell your stylist where you want your part and make sure that your part is in the right place before the cut starts. Watch what your stylist is doing and ask questions if they do something you are unsure of (like thinning your hair if you do not want it to be thinned, taking out too much length if you didn't want so much cut). And always check your cut afterward, running your hands through your hair while in the chair, to make sure that you are happy. Ask for the stylist to fix your hair if you think your haircut is uneven or if there is something wrong. A good stylist will make sure that you do these things by asking you to do them, but do them always, even if they don't ask. read more

WARNING: This establishment is self-reviewing! Frida's was aware that I was unhappy with my haircut and of my honest, yet unflattering review on Yelp. You can imagine I was quite surprised to see two five star reviews go up almost immediately after my post. I was even more surprised to see 14 useful/funny/cool notations on their two fictitious posts all in the same day? Have you ever seen anything more transparent!? On a positive note, after speaking with Martha on the phone, she had me come back in and was able to greatly improve the hatchet job I received the day before. Very disappointing! I'm in the Illinois area for the Summer and needed to find a place to get my hair cut. I spent some time on Yelp researching the different options in the Evanston area and decided on Frida. Sadly, I've never had a worse haircut in my life! I didn't realize how uneven and unblended the back was until I was home and my hair had dried. Based on the other reviews of Frida, it sounds like Martha is the person to see. Unfortunately, I didn't see Martha. I saw the other stylist. In the spirit of a well-rounded review, here are a few pluses. If you read no further than the first sentence, then know that I really like Frida's. While I am frugal, I do not like my haircut to look cheap. Making my wife look at me with such a thing seems mean. Consequently, when I walked to Frida's with a reference photo of me with a decent haircut and Margo one-upped it, I was really happy. I should add that my slightly wavy hair (which frustrated me in the past when I tried to style it) does seem to perplex other stylist who try to get what seems like a simple haircut right. Both Margo and Marta make it seem easy. Why? I don't know. In fact, I don't really care why. That they can do so for a 1/4 of what my wife pays for her haircut make me happy. I have been cutting my hair at Frida Hair Studio for about 2 years now. This is a smaller hair salon than what some are probably used to. I'm a guy, and Frida Hair Studio is one of the few places where I feel comfortable cutting my hair. I don't always know what to ask for (generally, I know that my hair needs to be shorter...), but Marta understands what I want from the little input that I give her, and she also suggests features that end up looking great. In addition to her skill, she's very friendly and personable. I feel that these are really important qualities in hairdresser. Her personality and the great cuts she gives have me coming back to the same place time after time to get my hair cut. To address some of the two-star reviews below me, I don't understand how music and decor can be so important when getting a haircut as to warrant a poor review. Decor is decor. It's not something I focus on. As for music, it would be an understatement to say that people have differing tastes. A smart business owner would look at the demographics of her patrons, and try to cater to the tastes of the average person. Pop music is just that -- popular music -- and is a safe bet. Additionally, rather than being passive aggressive on yelp, I guarantee that Marta would change the music if this person had just asked. All in all, I would recommend this place to others. read more

So, this is my first yelp review, and I've been wanting to write this one, and dreading it at the same time. I went to Frida about a month ago to get a cut, color, and highlight. I'm used to having my aunt cut it, but can't always find the time to go back to Wisconsin now that I've moved. My hair is long, slightly shorter than mid back with long bangs that I could juuust tuck behind my ears. It was layered but blended nicely with nothing too blunt. Let me start off by saying it was easy to get an appointment, and the ladies who worked there were super nice, and took the time to listen to you and what you wanted--Plus. I like the color that Marta did with my hair, but I had the exact formula my aunt uses with me. She didn't have the highlight color, so she stripped my hair, then died it with color. This looks fine, and am happy with my color.. though I thought I would be because they used the same color line as my aunt. Then came the haircut. Marta really took time to listen (which made me feel at ease since I don't trust just anyone with my hair). I said I wanted a trim as I had a lot of dead ends. I said I liked my longer layers, but have thin and limp hair so some shorter layers (more like texturing) is needed for some lift and volume. I said I liked my bangs but needed them cut. So, after it was cut, she did a blow-dry (which I didn't ask for, but probably wanted anyways. Not a big deal, but it was an extra $10.. I feel like I shoulda had the option to say no. Or if i'm paying over $100 for a color, I feel like I should be just given the blow dry. Probably me being cheap, but man!) I always have to touch up the ends of my hair with a flat iron or something because it gets an odd wave with a blow dry. So, once it was blown dry.. I could see the color, but I didn't love the style/cut. I attributed it too being blown dry not how i'm used to it. The cut, color, and highlight came out to $130 (before tip). I paid the money (reluctantly.. my aunt charges me $60 for the same thing--spoiled i was), and left. When I got home and tried to do it myself, I was SAD. My side bangs swooped just about my eyebrows (done nicely, just not what I really wanted), and my shortest layer is almost to my collar bone. My bangs used to blend gradually into my layers which framed my face, but now its bangs, then the next piece of hair is at the collar bone. And this layer is pretty thick. All of the hair that naturally hangs in front of my shoulders is at my collar bone (everything in front of my ears). It's slightly blended, but the next main layer is my longest one which is 3 inches longer than the collar bone layer. My hair is too thin and fine and the humidity sucks into my hair and it gives my second collar bone layer an awful curl. Its almost like i have two haircuts. One colar bone length, one almost boob length. Anyways, my hair doesn't stay straight, and looks triangular with a lot of bulk at the bottom. I really liked Marta and the color, but I just didn't like the cut at all. I'm no hair stylist, and assumed she'd know what cut works best with the hair she saw in front of her (also, I just needed a trim), so I mentioned a few times when she asked questions.. do what you think is best.. Bless her heart, but I won't be returning!! read more
