I'm so glad I stumbled on this place after an event nearby. We didn't have a reservation but were able to get seated quickly. The staff ate very friendly and helped us with the menu and suggestions. The guacamole with the 7 sauces is amazing and very popular. I also had the shisoto peppers, brussel sprouts, and shrimp tacos - all amazing! I also enjoyed the cucumber margarita which was refreshing. The environment is a bit small but cozy. There is a 2nd floor but there was a private event. Overall, really good experience. This was a decent three course lunch for $45. I chose the carrots for my first course - a cold dish topped with a herb, crunchy salsa matcha, and a subtle coconut crema. This was light but flavorful. Came here for a work lunch and absolutely loved it! The inside is so beautiful and the staff were very friendly and attentive. We split the guacamole and chips which came with 7 different salsas including a delicious cashew one which was my favorite and paired really nicely with the guacamole. Everything tasted so fresh and the guac was amazing. I got the cabbage chopped salad and I am still thinking about how good it is. It's an appetizer but is the perfect size for an entree and is probably the best salad I have ever had. It was so filling and the fava bean dressing is perfect. We also split the brussels sprouts which were absolutely incredible / definitely recommend as a side dish and the shishito peppers which were also good but a little too salty for me. I also had some bites of the flan which did not really taste like flan but was absolutely incredible and one of the best desserts I have had. Great spot if you are looking for some fushion style Mexican food. Fantastic margaritas. Highly suggest the quac and quesadillas (something I never would recommend but they were fantastic). Service is great, but they do get crowded. If you go during happy hour times I suggest going early. Strongly suggest the Madison location over the upper west side. Met a friend here for an early dinner. The outdoor bar was packed and the indoor bar was busy. The restaurant is modern looking and very echoic. We were seated upstairs and it was a lot quieter. The staff were very nice. Cocktails were very good. Extra credit for having an overproof gin. The food was simply fabulous. We shared the guacamole with 7 salsas- excellent! The chips were off the charts. I was blown away by their crab nachos. We also had excellent fish tempura tacos and astonishingly good pastrami tacos. The shishito peppers were really good too. It's easy to spend a lot of money here. There were a lot of specials, all expensive. I couldn't do $80 steak fajitas either. The $26 hot dog at Mischa now makes sense. Came here for a work lunch with a client. Essentially we got three different tacos, which I tried the Fish Tempura, Maitake Mushroom, and the Skirt Steak. The tacos were for sure expensive, with one taco ranging from $22 to $34. Luckily it was expensed by my company. We also got the Guacamole ($24) which came with chips and these seven salsas everyone talks about here. The steak lacked seasoning, and the salsa covering the bone marrow overpowered its flavor completely. We ran through a Yelp list of the best Mexican restaurants in NYC recently, and Empellon didn't show up among the first 150. While we haven't tried many of those restaurants, we have been here and believe it should rank much higher. The cuisine is Mexican-inspired, as the hosts say, but it is imaginative and well done, and we thought the service was especially sharp. The highlight? Well, the margaritas were good-sized and delicious, and the specialty margaritas featuring some very high-end tequilas were really outstanding. And we loved the fresh guacamole and the "seven salsas,"a small dish a serving of these treats arranged from mild to spicy which made devouring them something of an adventure. Excellent. The steak fajitas were prepared to our liking -- a little less than medium -- and while we liked the lobster tacos (?), the lobster bits turned out a bit chewy. Far better was the tuna tartare, an item we hadn't expected at this restaurant. The restaurant has some tasty and fancy desserts, but we opted for -- wait for it -- the chocolate ice cream sandwich! Yep, ultra-simple and ultra-yummy, a perfect finish to the meal for us and highly recommended. A good restaurant, then, if a bit on the noisy side when crowded. We sat in the large upstairs section where noise levels were better than in the bar and the seating areas below. As noted, the service was excellent. The prices here are, let's be honest, on the high side. It's not a Taco Bell, rather a destination for an upscale Mexican night out. read more

Like many before me, I came to Empellon primarily for the dessert and didn't give too much advance thought to the rest of the menu, but I ended up liking everything I tried. The guacamole was pretty standard in terms of the actual guac, but the addition of the "seven salsas", which sounds vaguely mythic, turns the act of eating an appetizer into an event. Everyone tries all of them at least once and comments on their favorites, least favorites, etc. They range in order from least spicy to spiciest. I liked them all, but the most memorable to me was a creamy, smoky dip. I also ordered the maitake mushroom tacos, which were served on a soft tortilla and topped with quesillo and cilantro. The mushrooms were drenched in a delicious piquant sauce; I loved each savory bite. My favorite part of the taco might've actually been the soft, immensely chewy, slightly oily tortilla. Empellon is also known for its margaritas, and I couldn't resist trying the saffron-infused version, which came with a saffron salt rim. The saffron flavor wasn't too strong or subtle and the drink was obviously made with high-quality ingredients. For some reason, the drink didn't totally blow me away; I was more of a fan of the spicy cucumber margarita that my friend ordered. Obviously go for this if you're a big saffron fan. Last but certainty not least, we ordered the famed avocado dessert, which - as you've probably heard - looks exactly like an avocado but remarkably tastes like a silky key lime pie custard. The "salt" is super citrusy raspado (Mexican shaved ice). It's just a really impressive dessert. Tastes great, but surely what makes the dish unique its masterful, playful construction. Empellon is in the heart of midtown (53rd off of Madison), which can always feel like a questionable choice for a Saturday night meal, but honestly, the crowd was lively, and there's something to be said for the almost grandiose feel afforded to the restaurant by the spacious, bi-level, interior. Here, innovation is only surpassed by amazing flavor. After seeing what a viral sensation the avocado dessert had become, we made a beeline over there as soon as we could. The hosts were welcoming, even though we were within 45 minutes of close. This might sound like something you'd expect, but that's not always the case. Because we were a little bit more peckish than dessert can satisfy, we tried the mushroom tacos first. They are the best soft mushroom tacos I've ever had. Then, for the avocado dessert. Do yourself a favor, and Google this. There are food writers that will do much better job describing it than I will. I'll simply call it a flavor fiesta. Ok that sounds really dumb, but I'm going with it because I'm that kind of person. Additionally, this place does an amazing job of deadening, the sounds of a restaurant. I met a friend here for dinner recently, as she raved about the food. On the whole, everything tasted good, but there wasn't anything SO sensational that I'll be in a hurry to return. It tends to be on the noisier side, but due to the weather, I think it could've been worse. Food arrives quickly, so I'll give them credit on that. There was a mishap that I think could have been handled better, but more on that in a minute. Here's an overview of what we ordered: Guacamole ($24): The guacamole itself isn't a particularly large portion, but I don't think anyone orders it for that really. It's the seven salsas in mini ramekins, ranging from mild to hot, that really makes this worth ordering. Pastrami Tacos ($28): This piqued my interest. We enjoyed this very much, but I would say it tastes exactly as it sounds. Imagine you heated up some Trader Joe's pastrami, placed it on a corn tortilla, added a little sauerkraut and mustard seeds, you would have precisely the same output. Worth noting, tacos are served two to a platter. Aromatic Beef Short Ribs ($44): Again, tasty, but not epic. Tasted similar to what I make in my slow cooker at home. I've had incredible short ribs elsewhere, but this was just fine. Not special, not bad by any means. Not sure the price is justified. Sweet Corn ($15): A relatively small-medium bowl of corn, it's tasty but not amazing. I actually couldn't tell there was chorizo in it. Good, but like everything else, nothing to write home about. Roasted Shishito Peppers ($15): Very generous portion on this one. Loads of peppers on a plate. They're prepared about as well as you'd expect. ¿Por Que No? Margarita ($20): Tasted good. No complaints. Just your average margarita on the rocks with a slice of pineapple & salted rim. I probably wouldn't have bothered with a review if that was all there was to the experience, but here's why I docked an extra star: while eating our mains, a girl was trying to get into the booth seat for her table next to my friend. Since they crunch the tables so close together, this very thin girl in her 20s struggled to get through without incident, and so she accidentally knocked over the glass carafe of water on our table and it shattered everywhere. She was absolutely mortified - I really felt for her. She kept apologizing as we hurried to control the water, offering to replace our drinks as we did, and we just kept telling her it's okay. My friend's skirt was soaked with water, as was her seat, glass all over our short ribs, corn, guacamole + salsas, her martini, our water glasses, and the shishito peppers. Fortunately, I had just finished my margarita, and wasn't planning on ordering another one. The bus boy made a concerted attempt to clean up the glass and water, although my friend's seat was still wet and glass was still in our food and on the table, floor, etc. I eventually gave my friend my napkin so she could sit, which was unfortunately not replaced. A little while later, the bus boy asked if we'd like another drink (and I'm pretty sure he meant, would we like to pay for more drinks). I declined because I had just finished, but pointed out my friend's half-full martini had floating glass in it. He asked her if she still wanted it, but I think that was due to a language barrier. Eventually our server came around with replacement drinks for my friend and I, and said it was courtesy of our neighbor. I felt sort of bad because I wasn't planning on drinking anymore, and these drinks had to set this early 20-something year old girl back an extra $50 on top of her meal, for what was absolutely an accident, not completely unprovoked by tight spacing. I felt the classy thing to do would be for the restaurant to replace my friend's drink and the affected food, but that didn't seem to occur to them. After we pointed out to our waiter that we weren't comfortable eating the food with glass shards in it, they asked if we just wanted them to take it away / call it done, or pack it up. Which is kind of crazy because we weren't even half-way through with the $44 short ribs, and hadn't yet touched the $15 peppers. But no, not interested in packing up food with sharp glass in it. Would kind of prefer they just replaced the dishes? Ultimately, they let us weigh whether we wanted to risk our lives with glass for a couple of minutes before finally stepping in and replacing our short ribs and shishito peppers. Unfortunately they didn't think to do the same with the corn, guac, or even our water glasses. At one point, I got so thirsty, I decided to risk it and try to filter out glass with my teeth just so I could drink some water. I gave up on the rest. All of that aside, it was a fine time and everyone was polite. Naturally, it wasn't the restaurant's fault that the girl broke the carafe - that was an accident. But the tight squeeze probably was, and it's a little disappointing that they were so quick to profit off this poor girl yet hesitated to take away the glass. read more

I've been here twice and this place is fantastic. The food is unmatched, especially the wagyu tacos, which, despite being pricey, are life-changing. Their salsa sampler is also so fun and unique, and provides such a diverse selection of salsas to try. The waiters are super kind and great about making recommendations, and even comped a dessert for us the first time I was here just because they loosely knew the person I was with. The space is also beautiful, especially the upper level. Super romantic, great lighting, and a perfect date night spot. read more

We started the meal with the guacamole which comes with seven different salsas! So fun and tasty! Our favorite salsa was the chile de arbol and salsa verde. Guacamole was excellent. We shared the pastrami tacos and BLT sopes as our mains. The pastrami was delicious and the sopes were clever. We had the side of Brussel sprouts which were amazing. The service was OK. The seating on the ground floor was unreasonably tight with my seat frequently getting kicked and me making physical contact with waitstaff. The crowd being largely corporate people who don't want to splurge on more expensive restaurants does detract from what I would otherwise brand a hip atmosphere. The menu is small but focused. Every dish was excellent. Two tacos at these prices ($20s and $30s) hurts but the pastrami tacos were great. Queso fundido was indeed a fun take, and the carnitas dish was deeply satisfying. Went there for a business dinner. I had been there for lunch so was excited to try them for dinner The menu was set so we started with the 7 sauces and chips. Nice start. The tuna tartare on a bed of something was ok. Fair start but out of place with the cuisine. The cabbage salad was refreshing and a good in between The tacos were hard shell beef of some sort and the soft ones fried fish. I tried neither so cannot comment. The beef was commented on as being ok with a lot of fat. The fish was also commented as ok. The entree was the skirt steak and the steamed halibut. The halibut was good but not very tasty other than the salt. Skirt steak was good and the rub in it worked to give it flavor. Dessert was the ice cream sandwich which I did not try. I made two trips to Empellon before writing this review. I love Mexican food, and will usually have tacos at low key places but I was pretty happy about a more up-scale experience with Mexican food. The ambience is lovely. There are two floors. There is an elevator available as well for those who cannot take the stairs. In the first visit, we ordered guacamole, tacos and the avocado dessert. In the second visit we got the crab nachos, tuna tartare and seared halibut. Based on the first visit I would have rated this place 4/5. The guacamole is good and it comes with an array of sauces arranged from mildest to hottest. I enjoyed the experience of trying them all out. The tacos left a bit more to be desired. It's hard to explain why...maybe they needed more filling..? The ratio of the meat to the tortilla seemed a bit off. The avocado dessert is a nice summery dessert. I would describe it as a key lime yogurt mousse. I felt like it needed something else, like a cookie or cake base or something. The service was okay. My next trip is what bumped Empellon up to 5 stars. I absolutely loved the crab nachos. They were so flavorful. I did notice a review about dry nachos so I hesitated to order them, but the ones I got were really well made with lots of topping. I enjoyed the tuna tartare a lot. The halibut, white mild flavored for a Mexican meal was cooked so well that I had to give it a 5/5. The dessert this time was also a lot better. I got the coconut mousse. The pleasant surprise was that it was a chocolate dessert with a coconut filling. I definitely enjoyed this dessert more than the avocado one. This was their seasonal dessert. Let's start at the end and work backwards: the avocado dessert is WORTH THE HYPE. I'd come here just for this. It was one of the most delicious things I've ever had. I'm not a dessert person and it was the perfect level of sweetness for me. Not to mention it's just fun and instagram worthy. I also got the chips and seven salsas. I enjoyed all of the salsas but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the lowest level one with cashews. The habanero took me by surprise but as a heat lover it was tolerable. I think my favorite was mezcal or the chipotle one. The guac was also very good. Margs: I tried two. The pineapple one and the cucumber spicy one. I probably had a few too many "mother of dragons" but this place is a blast. They start you with a salsa sampler with not one, not two, not three, but seven different salsas. We came in a large group of 8 and here's what we ordered (family style): - Chips and guacamole and 7 salsas for $22 (3/10): The chips weren't great (tasted a little stale) and the guacamole was unremarkable. Didn't love the salsas and they came in these super tiny cups which meant you couldn't dip your chips in them. - Crab nachos with uni (9/10): These were fantastic. Maybe the only good thing we ordered, except maybe also the Brussel sprouts. - Tacos: the lobster tacos and fish tempura tacos weren't bad but the pastrami was terrible. Others tried the Maitake mushrooms taco and didn't like it. - Salads (5/10): the salads aren't really salads....wish we were warned that ahead of time. The chopped cabbage vaguely resembled a salad and was decently refreshing but the English peas salad in no way resembled a salad (see photos). That said, it was decently refreshing. - Steamed halibut (2/10): I took one bite and couldn't have anymore. It was over cooked and had 0 flavor. And it was a tiny piece yet costed $45. - Rib steak fajitas (6/10): This wasn't bad, relatively speaking. - Brussel sprouts with spicy almonds (8/10): These were actually pretty good. - avocado dessert (6/10): Not bad but not sure what all the hype was for. I liked the creamy texture and it was something new to try but definitely nothing to write home about and I couldn't have more than a few bites. Service was also weird. They kept taking stuff away when we weren't done with them. The waitress even took my margarita when I wasn't done so I told her I was still working on it, then she put it back down then weirdly changed her mind and picked it back up and took it away. Food recommendations: Guacamole with seven salsas, Smoked black cod, and pastrami tacos were all amazing. Seven salsas are arranged from least to most spicy. The was a pretty amazingly good meal. The guacamole flight was worth price of admission. Several different salsa's some hot some not. A wonderful array of different flavors. The guacamole was fresh and simple preparation of perfect avocado. The chips were actually fried corn tortillas which were excellent. I had the skirt steak. It was tender and perfectly cooked and even though rare it came to the table still warm. Another excellent salsa. It was accompanied by a salad of sautéed onions (scallions and shallots at least). We also had the dish tacos which were full with a very light batter almost tempera like . The portion was ample. The classic margaritas were well made. The service was nicely paced, efficient and friendly. We had an excellent post dinner conversation the management and how much we enjoyed the meal. Ambiance: Modern, sleek, colorful Service: great attentive waiters and waitresses. Very friendly and easy to spark a convo on recommendations, jokes, or anything in particular. Food: we had the crab nachos which were amazing. Full flavor and plenty to go around for three. The tuna tar tar is amazing. Everything they serve up is well seasoned. I had the skirt steak tacos. While delicious, they only come in pairs. They are pricey but well worth it. Finally for the dessert, I had the blood orange flan which was too sweet for me. My friend gave me a piece of the chocolate ice cream bar which was more my style. Dark semi sweet chocolate that is not too sweet but enough to satisfy a savory meal. Overall, a fantastic dinner. I would come again but it is pricey. Drinks: spicy margaritas are fantastic. They are not cheap but so worth it! The costs can added fast if you lose track but they are really good. read more

Came for dinner with a friend and had a great experience. We ordered: + Mother of dragons cocktail + Spicy cucumber margarita + The safe word cocktail + Pomegranate margarita + Guacamole + Tuna tartare + Fish tempura tacos + Maitake mushroom tacos + Skirt steak + Avocado dessert The highlights were the guac, skirt steak and famed avocado dessert (so wild).
