Snuck into the new Emmy Squared Pizza at Brightleaf on opening day and it was delicious! A concept from Brooklyn, actually serves up Detroit-style pizza which is thick like pan pizza but features rich and buttery cheese, browned to the edges. Emmy sits in the open courtyard area at Brightleaf and is easy to find. The space is large, open and basic with a smallish bar in the back. Choose from a handful of apps, salads, and pizzas in specialty combos or build your own. Supposedly the burgers here rock, too. We did the vodka and Big Hawaiian pies which were quite good. Two or three slices and you're done. The garlic cheesy bread is pretty good but may be too much in the way of carbs. Great to have Emmy in the area. The only other places I know doing Detroit style pies are Hutchins Garage (Wednesdays) and Trophy Pizza on (Mondays). So enjoy it, Durham! read more

What a cute spot! My boyfriend and I set last minute reservations on OpenTable for Saturday night dinner. I highly recommend anybody doing so if you don't want a long wait. From speculation, there are bar seats and a high top for walk-ins during dinner service so it's not necessary, but once you take a whiff of their delicious pizzas, you don't want to be waiting any longer than necessary . The interior was very warm and cozy and the lights were dim which was nice. They have a couple tvs on the walls with different sports playing. Our waitress was very attentive and super nice! The food was on another level! It was so delicious and it's a mix between a deep dish and flat bread almost. The edges were nice and crispy and the cheese and toppings were oozing with goodness. The brussel sprout salad was a good starter for us and had the right amount of dressing. It's always a worry if a restaurant would drown their salad in dressing, but it was perfect! Not only was the GF pizza the best in recent memory but our server, Trace, took my night out with the guys to a level surpassing our highest expectations. We went to Emmy Squared with my church choir for a celebration for the end of our year combined with a send off for our choral intern. The staff was very enthusiastic and helpful. We had 12 people and decided to sit outside. The staff hustled around and set us up in a long table arrangement. Everyone ordered their own pizza, and they were all exceptional. The Detroit style was different than I've had...it kind of reminded me of the old Pizza Hut deep dish because the crust was moderately thick but it was crispy on the bottom. I shared a large with another guy and we took home almost half. Very generous. I'd recommend the large. $5 more but 75% more pizza. And it looks like it would reheat like a champ. Love this place! I was introduced during a recent visit to Atlanta and was stoked to find out a location opened in the triangle. It's a great addition to the brightleaf district where it's surrounded by other restaurants frequented by foodies alike. I opted for the vegetarian pizza that was dressed with 3 different sauce (regular, vodka, and pesto) and complimented with a sesame seed crust. AMAZING!! It's light, fresh, and flavorful. Average price for 6 slices is about $20. They have other food options too if you're feeling hungry. The burgers appear to be popular as well. Emmy Squared is a small but growing chain of pizzerias specializing in Detroit style pies. My wife, brother in law, and I visited the Durham location for a recent, weeknight dinner and had an overall mixed experience. This location of Emmy Squared resides in the Brightleaf Square complex. Street parking around the area is limited, however a large lot with 2 hours of complimentary parking for customers can be found right next to the development. We made reservations to be safe, but found them completely unnecessary as the restaurant was mostly empty on a weeknight. We ordered two large pizzas (the VIP and a custom red pie with sausage and jalapeños), which ended up being a little too much food for three hungry diners. The VIP seemed unique in concept with both vodka and pesto sauces, Calabrian chili, pepperoni, and a sesame seed crust. Ultimately, we found that pizza a little too indulgent and salty. Furthermore, the crust on the pizza felt a little undercooked and wet given the heft of toppings. Our custom red fared better with a more puffy, light crust and slightly more restrained salt content. If we were to return, we would definitely opt for the less indulgent pies to allow for better appreciation of the Detroit style bases. The food at Emmy Squared earned four stars, but I have to dock a star for service. Our waitress failed to make us feel welcome and unnecessarily rushed our meal despite the emptiness of the restaurant and the relatively late closing time. For example, as soon as we sat down she asked us if we wanted to put appetizers in, and seemed annoyed when we asked for a chance to look at the menu. Similarly, she asked us if we wanted dessert and a box for leftovers in the middle of our dinner while we were actively eating our pizzas. Overall, we found the pizzas at Emmy Square indulgent but worth a try. Perhaps opt for takeout given the service issues we encountered. read more

Came on a Saturday for lunch, had a reservation for 6, but we didn't really need one, it wasn't too busy around 1 pm! The restaurant has a full bar so the dirty martini made was so good! Although, The other cocktails on the menu were 10/10! The h&h marg was so good, the emotional damage was also so yummy! The food was also 10/10, we shared the Zia fries and that was perfect for 6 people to share! Everyone got the regular pizza, which was the size of the cocktail menu, and everyone's pizza was also 10/10. I got the Emmy and added sirloin steak (+3 addition) and it was just so good! Everyone had to take boxes home, so definitely save room for leftovers later! Marybeth was our waitress and she was outstanding. When I heard they were opening a location in Bright leaf, my girlfriend and I were pumped up. We were first introduced to Emmy back when I was in Charlotte for a work trip. We were hungry and just so happened to stumble upon the location there. Ever since that day we we're hooked. Came here for an early dinner and you can tell this place is brand new by how long it took us to get seated. Staff was super friendly and kind but we came way before the Saturday dinner rush and we even offered to sit at the bar so if I had to knock off any points it was for that. Once we sat down we knew exactly what we were getting. We ordered the Cheesy Garlic Sticks and shared a small big Hawaiian pie. No pic of the sticks but these were phenomenal! The pesto they add to this just take these to a new level. The pizza was just as good as I remember. I'm a sucker for a deep dish, Sicilian like pizza so this is now my go to pizza place since moving to NC from NY. As someone who is not the biggest pineapple on pizza person also, they don't add so much where it feels like you're just eating the bowl of the fruit. I'll preface this by saying if it were based only on the food it would be a 5. If you could add decimal points, I would say, 4.4. Pizza is exceptional, crispy, cheesy, good toppings, easily the best currently available in Durham. Wing s were tasty, could have been cooked longer. Burger was tasty as were the waffle fries, but the pizza was by far the best. My reason for a minimal deduction was the service, not very attentive, maybe a little understaffed, but not equivalent to the price paid for the food itself. The refresh of the old El Rodeo space is nice. Add more staff, or raise the service expectation of current staff, and this place would be top notch.
