For my birthday, we decided to check out Viceroy restaurant in Durham. We had a wonderful dining experience at Viceroy! We started with the Guava Pani Puri and Veg Samosa, then moved on to the Achari Paneer, Anjeer Kofta, and Pumpkin Paneer Curry. The Achari Paneer and Anjeer Kofta were my highlights. Both were beautifully seasoned (medium spice), flavorful, and easily the best parts of the meal. The Anjeer Kofta, in particular, was a delicious mix of sweet and savory flavors. Everything was well-prepared and made for a truly enjoyable meal. I'd definitely come back to explore more of the menu. really good food and drink! when there are SO many indian restaurants in the triangle area, viceroy stands out by having menu items that are different from all the rest. we ordered a bunch of stuff to share and everything was great. the decor was interesting and very reminiscent of a british pub; although it got loud, it was never overpoweringly so. i started with a drink - the carda-mami, which was wonderful. the gin & honey & lemon combination was really well done and the drink wasn't too strong. for appetizers, we got the momo bhel and the guava pani puri. the bhel was awesome. i would order that again any day of the week. the pani puri was also good, but i couldn't really taste the guava and didn't think it was special enough to warrant the price or order more than once. for mains, we got the smoked dal and the anjeer kofta. both were amazing; i especially loved the anjeer kofta and could taste the figs in the kofta, which worked really well with the sweet malai sauce. the naan was great too. we wanted to try the pineapple hibiscus sorbet for dessert but they were unfortunately sold out - however, our server recommended we walk down the street and get ice cream at the parlour, which we did and thoroughly enjoyed. i had a lovely evening here and am happy this place with its menu exists! read more

Visited Viceroy without a reservation but was able to get seated at the bar. The dining experience was definitely different at the bar compared to normal seating as I have visited Viceroy before but the service was still similar and we were able to receive our food in the same amount of time. Enjoyed the flavor and juiciness of the hariyali chicken. Portion sizes are not the largest, especially for the price point, but the food is delicious. Viceroy is decorated in a way that makes me feel like I've teleported to Europe. Definitely worth the visit. read more

We ventured out to Durham tonight to try out another Indian restaurant, Viceroy. We were a little let down by the last Indian restaurant we tried in Durham, so we were curious to see how this would go. Spoiler alert: there was no let down here. The decor inside was fun - colorful, patterned wallpaper with black & white pictures and mirrors, all inside gold frames. The vibes were fun. Service was great as well - our server was lovely and had wonderful suggestions. Food came out in a fast-paced but timely manner. We started with the Gobi Sukka - After my first bite of a large fried cauliflower piece, I thought it could use a little more seasoning (salt) and spice. But once I got more bites with the peppers & curry leaves, the flavors built up. The coating and fry on the cauliflower was superbly crunchy. For the main course, we split the Lamb Peri Peri Boti (medium level spice) and the Chicken Vindaloo (spicy level soice), which a side of thai chili naan. The lamb was my favorite bite of the night - incredibly tender, salted just on the edge of being over salted but not (which is perfection to me), and incredible spice profile. The chicken vindaloo was tangy and perfectly spicy, with the spice lingering on the back end. Lastly, the naan was crispy, buttery, and slightly spicy - the perfect vessel for sopping up all the delicious sauces from our meat courses. The samosa was delicious. The palak chat was not what I expected- battered and fried spinach. It was a little dry but was saved by the extra dipping tamarind. The fried cauliflower didn't quite live up to the hype. The palak dal was pretty bland. The interior is cool and inviting. Viceroy is an absolute gem for Indian cuisine in Durham! There's a lot of competition for the best Indian restaurant in this city, but for me, Viceroy wins time and time again hands down. The decor is simple but effective, imagine a British-style pub with plenty of wooden accents but with an Indian flair. The space is comfy and approachable without doing too much. What I also enjoy about Viceroy is the service. Quick and efficient, you never have to wait too long for your meal. Plus the servers are all extremely friendly and make you feel right at home. I'm originally from NYC and have been spoiled by amazing Indian food, and Viceroy can hold their own with any NYC restaurant. Everything is DELICIOUS but the standouts for me are: The Naan, both the plain and garlic varieties, are incredibly tasty, soft, and fluffy The Mykanwala curry is so rich and flavorful in a well-spiced, creamy tomato and onion sauce- I always get mine medium spicy with chicken! The Curried Shepherds Pie is the kind of dish you don't expect to find on an Indian menu that delivers a delicious punch of flavor. It's what you would expect from a shepherd's pie but with the unexpected twist of Indian flavors and spices- a must try! The Smoked Daal Bukhara is also another standout curry dish with lucious smoked black lentils in a flavorful sauce that you can choose your favorite protein to accompany. The vibe was modern, and the menu offered options that were recognizable, yet distinctive. Notably, ordering some dumplings served in Indo-Chinese style with tangy sauce and fried noodles was a good way to pass the time until my entree arrived, and I was pleased to have gotten a ginger-based non-alcoholic beverage. The main course was a lentil curry which looked a lot like the butter-based Dal Makhani one often finds but was in fact stewed in coconut and was vegan as well as having a rich mix of smoky, spicy flavors. I really enjoyed checking out Viceroy and would give it a 4-4.5 star rating! It reminds me a lot of the iconic Dishoom with its British influence and unusual takes on Indian classics. It's dimly lit but has various pictures from colonial India and gorgeous mirrors adorning the walls. Definitely gives English pub vibes. For food, we got the pineapple anise mocktail, gobi sukka, angara tikka, anjeer kofta, and cadbury kheer. Of those, I would highly recommend the gobi sukka, anjeer kofta, and cadbury kheer. We ordered everything to be medium spicy. The gobi sukka was perfectly crispy and flavorful. The anjeer kofta was unique -- I've never had figs in Indian food before, but I loved it and will be craving this dish for a while. The cadbury kheer was also lovely, but my only feedback would be to add some nuts or dried fruits (like golden raisins) to add some texture to the dish. The pineapple anise mocktail was pleasant, but not really a standout drink for me; I don't know if I would order it again. With the angara tikka, it was honestly way too hot for us. Even though everything was ordered to be medium spicy, there was some variability with what that meant and I felt like our order was not medium spicy. Our server was prompt and we got our food within minutes of placing the order. He also gave us a free raita on the house when we had some issues with the spice level of the angara tikka. Practically yelled at us when we weren't ready to order. Literally threw plates down on the table. Finally tried out Viceroy after multiple recommendations. I got a few appetizers to try and while they were definitely tasty, they came out extremely fast and were a little cold. The samosa I thought were average and you can find it just as good at any Indian restaurant. The main stars of the show is definitely their grilled meats and curries. I highly recommend getting a mix of the meats to try. They are a tad on the salty side, but very flavorful, juicy, and well cooked. My favorite spot to get Indian food in Durham! Love the aesthetic, upscale ambiance. The food is also authentic & tasty; portions are a bit on the smaller side compared to prices, but I suppose that's expected given the fancy nature of the restaurant. We tried the London Mixed Grill (Hariyala + Angara kebabs, golden chicken, lamb chop, & masala shrimp sizzling with onions and rice), Paneer Mykanwala, Chicken Vindaloo (both of which are tomato & onion based stews- Mykanwala is creamier though), and garlic naan; enjoyed all of these. In addition to the menu denoting the GF and Dairy free items and where cashews could be excluded, Doug went the extra mile to check with the kitchen to know what to avoid that has eggs in it. (Turns out only a few menu items have eggs -- who knew??) Food every bit as good as last visit. Tried Sarson Ka Saag with chicken. The Panjabi winter recipe is a stew of mustard greens simmered with a delectable array of spices. I added large chunks of tender chicken. A little bit pricey but truly North Indian tasting food with a british style pub vibe. Went for wedding anniversary. Wife had cucumber margherita and I had old fashioned type drink. Simply put, Viceroy served some of the best Indian food we've had anywhere. 'Nuff said. If you want details, keep reading. Viceroy was recommended to us by several friends over the years. After visiting, we could see why. The food, drink, and service were phenomenal. We first had catered food from Viceroy at a party by some of the same friends. The food was good then too. Viceroy is widely considered one of the top Indian restaurants in the Triangle and I agree. My wife and I are big fans of the Chapel Hill location of Lime & Lemon Indian Grill & Bar. We think Lime & Lemon is also outstanding. So, it's hard for me not to compare the two restaurants. Viceroy and Lime & Lemon are both five-star Indian restaurants to me, but in different ways. In a nutshell, Lime & Lemon is great for a more casual, traditional Indian dining experience. Viceroy is great for a more elevated, modern experience. This is in terms of both ambiance and menu. I think Viceroy is more ideal for a special occasion/date. Ultimately, when it comes to the food, you can go wrong with either. Just my two cents. Viceroy opened in November 2016 on the ground level of what appears to be an old six-to-seven-story office building. The restaurant doesn't have a dedicated parking lot nor do they validate. I suggest parking in the municipal lot behind the restaurant by navigating to 111 W Chapel Hill St. Viceroy has a back entrance from that lot. Parking is enforced Monday-Friday, 8am-7pm, except for city holidays. As of 2023, Durham's street meter rate is $2.50/hour and surface/garage rate is $2.25/hour. Inside, the restaurant and bar are beautiful. The design and decor are a mixture of modern and vintage. The business name is presumably a reference to the Viceroy of India (Governor-General of India) during the British rule of India (1858-1947). I believe the restaurant is themed after that period in Indian history. For example, a multitude of old, framed photos on the back wall - some in black and white - appear to be from that time. It's unique and cool. I haven't come across an Indian restaurant with this distinct style and look. On Twitter, Viceroy described itself as "Durham's First British Pub with combined Indian Restaurant." Viceroy serves dinner only. Reservations are recommended. During our Sunday 6pm visit, the restaurant was packed. This place is popular. Both the food and drink menus offered a nice variety of things to choose from. The food menu was two pages with one page exclusively curry (12+ kinds). Under apps, they had a Veggie Cornish Pastie ($10) and Sausage Rolls ($10), so there's the British pub influence for you. Below is a list of what we ordered. It should give you an idea of what else Viceroy offers and what the prices are like. Smalls * Pani Puri ($11) - wheat cups stuffed with potatoes and chickpeas, and served with pineapple-spiced water * Palak Chaat ($12) - crispy chickpea-battered spinach topped with onion, tomato, yogurt, and house chutneys Tandoor * Lamb Lollipops ($27) - French rack of lamb marinated in masala spices and cooked to a tender and charred medium well Sides * Garlic Naan ($5) Curries * Sarson Ka Saag ($18) - a Punjabi classic curry made with spinach, mustard greens, and herbs * Smoked Daal Bukhara ($18) - slow-simmered black urad dal in a home-style spiced coconut cream stew Specialty Cocktails * Spicy Papi ($13) - housemade Thai chili-infused reposado tequila, coconut milk, coconut water, house cinnamon syrup, lemon, and lime * Tamarind Daiquiri ($13) - tamarind-infused rum, house simple syrup, lemon, and lime, topped with garam masala Everything was amazing. I've had Pani Puri several times, but not the way Viceroy serves it, with the puri (hollowed crisps) on top of shot glasses containing the pani (flavored water). It's an ingenious and practical way to eat Pani Puri. And it was also the best-tasting Pani Puri I've had. The same can be said about the Lamb Lollipops. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a restaurant I've been to that had better Lamb Lollipops. These were perfect in terms of freshness, meat quality, flavoring, and execution. They were wonderfully tender and flavorful. You've got to get the Palak Chaat. Chaat is one of my wife's favorite foods and Viceroy cooked up some of, again, the best we've had. Viceroy's Palak Chaat was colorful, crispy, and super tasty. Addictive. As for the curries, they were excellent. Both the Sarson Ka Saag and the Smoked Daal Bukhara were warm, hearty, and comforting. Rich in aroma and taste. Bowls of white basmati rice accompanied them and they went well with the Garlic Naan. The Garlic Naan was very appetizing on its own. The drinks were terrific. The Spicy Papi was strong and had some legit heat to it. The Tamarind Daiquiri was delectably sweet and sour. Service was fantastic. Praveena ("Veena") was our server. From the moment my family and I stepped through the doorway we were immediately sat and taken care of like we were in our own home. My father forgot his reading glasses and our server disappeared for a second only to come back with a bright table lamp so my Dad could read the menu. Through the night we were provided with top notch service and I haven't gotten to the food. The food was absolutely incredible! I highly recommend the bbq kabobs under the tandoori menu (I don't recall the proper name on the menu) I found myself trying not to order another plate. My boyfriend and I made reservations at Viceroy for a Saturday night date night. We'd never heard of this restaurant before, but we will absolutely be back! The restaurant was very busy at our 6:30pm reservation time and throughout our time there, but we still had incredible service. The food came out quickly and we never had to wait for drinks or the check. My boyfriend had the lamb lollipops with a side of rice, which he loved. I had the chana masala, which was incredibly authentic and delicious! We had garlic naan - highly recommend!! For dessert, we split an order of gulab jamon. Truly, do not miss out on those! Thankfully, the staff was extremely kind and allowed us a seat at the bar. I ordered the chicken curry and garlic naan. The chicken curry was not my favorite. I thought it was over spiced and had heavy tints of cilantro which isn't like any of the other Indian curries I've had in the past. For a $20 entree, I expected a bit more. Parking recommendations are in the nearby garage but for dinner we got lucky and had street parking. We got 2 abv free drinks, 2 cocktails and a beer and everything was fantastic. The odd couple was unique with the curry leaf oil but the Kala Mirch was a brilliant take on black pepper strawberries, sort of like a highly elevated Bloody Mary. We did the London Mixed grill and the spinach chaat. The mixed grill was delicious came with rice and the spinach chaat was a chaat version of crispy spinach pakoras. Very good! Dal Makhni, Anjeeri Kofta and butter chicken were all fantastic and I felt like this was possibly the most authentic north Indian rich meal I've had in the U.S. they make the Gulab jamun in house and I was surprised to see 3 generous pieces in the dessert portion. If they added a stuffed pistachio into the Gulab jamun, it might be legit the best in the country (but I do get how they might want to keep it nut free). The naans blow it out of the park!
