Teeny tiny, hiding in the shadow of Palama Market, actually a next door neighbor to. They put out these cute little tables and cafe chairs outside of their storefront so you can sip Vietnamese coffee, latte, chai, and nosh on their decent variety of savory or sweet (but not too sweet) pastry.
I've had the coffee flavored torte which is great if you can throw down 30 bucks for one small cake. Topped with a little garnish of chocolate sheet, fresh strawberries and 5 blueberries. Delicate, delectable, expensive. Yes, both times someone bought the cake for me. In fact when I tasted it at my house, I asked where they got it from. That's how I came to know Elvin's in Kalihi. Now you will want to know too.
They specialize in consistent items and when I say decent, it's not massive but for the size of the little shop, they put out some really nice stuff!
The curry pies which for some reason they call the, curry doughnut, is fried in panko and surprisingly is not greasy. It is not light either. The dough is sweet and so is the meat and veggie filling. Crunchy, chewy, dense, everything a curry pie should be.
I've tried their furukaki lavosh sticks, alright I guess but can't smear the thin sticks with butter so I'd rather just have lavosh. They make decent rolls and buns. Little buns on the sweet side, perfect for sliders or kid size sandwiches.
Milky, creamy, sweet tasting everything. My wish list is for their cinnamon toast which I wasn't inclined to get cuz it's crunchy dry and I was in a chomp a savory snack, mood.
Now while I did say snack, the curry bun, portuguese sausage bun, ham and cheese, etc. are pretty much a meal. At a buck 69, it's cheap eats. Freshly made. Now while I'll do a portuguese sausage bun now and then, their hot dog bun is, hmmm, junk.
How many things can you do with tube steak anyway? They aren't really to blame. But when I say, "junk" that pretty much sums up what I think of hot dogs anyway. Their ham and cheese is a bit greasy too, if that's your thing. It is my sister's thing. She slathers her face and hooves with the stuff as she gulps. Me no likee! Makes me sick to watch her oink it down.
But, that is her thing. Oh, she doesn't drive her fat ass around, I do so may I say that ample parking at this lot is great. A real plus when your passenger can only muster a waddle.
Friends brought me a huge box of their sweet but not too sweet cream and fruit pastries. I discovered they didn't come cheap. I have some rich friends, I guess. Scant on the fruit and filling, one has to appreciate layered, flaky crusty dough which can get a little dry and difficult to eat. Oh, that's what the coffee is for. The sweets were OK but just not my thing, too little filling cuz when I eat sweet filled pastry, the cream or fruit best be busting out all over like a thick ejaculatory you get the idea. It's pastry not pastey.
I minused one star for this reason even though the owners are sweet and kind. So kind that they use the customer as a math lesson for their less than stellar son. He's really old enough to calculate, or should I say, count what 2 quarters and 4 pennies are. But they belabored the process by making him count again and again until he got it right while the customer, (moi,) stands there thinking that 3 minutes really can be long if you're held hostage.
2 quarters, she told him, was 50 cents. His wonderful discovery that 4 more pennies made 54c was excruciating. Kinda like this explanation for the minused star. Well, you get the point, even they don't.
Mom, please spare the hurried and harried customer. Pick on the ones who have the time to sip coffee outside. Not the drooling, fat customer who ordered quickly and then is left to stand the 3 minutes to eternity, and beyond! I don't hate kids. I hate your kid's math teacher.
Please, your food is good. I'm hungry. Your kid can learn 54c on YOUR dime. OK? read more
