I've decided to update my review on Elvin's when I was caught in a bind and they came through. However, it wasn't all cherries. You see, last Christmas I gave you my heart and the very next day, you gave it away. This year, to save me from tears........no, no. This never happened to me but Wham's "Last Christmas" which was written by George Michael, is overly played during the holidays in Japan. On a serious note, last Christmas I was jonesing for a yule log. I saw posts on IG and when I attempted to order one at a bakery on S King St, I was advised it was too late. At a Japanese themed bakery I was offered the option of a Christmas cake but wasn't in a mood for strawberry shortcake. I was on a mission. I recall attending a Christmas dinner at my cousin's a few years back where someone brought Yule logs and found that they were from Elvin's Bakery (EB). I also did a search on EB's photo gallery and saw one posted so I gave them a call. Placing an order via telephone was literally a piece of cake. It was confirmed to a tee and was also advised their closing on Christmas Day so pick up would be on Christmas Eve. I made payment over the phone. All done. The Yule log was a hit at Christmas dinner where it was visually stunning and tasty. It was not overly sweet nor dry. Well executed and decorated beautifully. So why not 5-stars? Picking it up was a shocker when the Yule log was placed in a cake box that clearly was meant for a 1/2 sheet cake (?) size so you had to be extra careful when transporting and storing. There was no support nor fillers in the box for the quite empty box as the Yule log was not meant for the box provided. In closing, I'm grateful EB came through with an amazing dessert for our holiday dinner but was caught off guard with their boxing. I'll need to think twice about ordering a Yule log again from them and will definitely order earlier and seek the options on Oahu before deciding on where to go. read more

I love checking out bakeries, Elvin's is a good one while you're in the Dillingham area. Plenty of strip mall parking available. It's shop with a wide variety of cakes, pasties and goodies. This time I bought 3 different flavors of cakes. Tiramisu (flavorful), mango (not too sweet and light), and strawberry (light and everyone's favorite). 中秋节快乐 Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! Mooncake time! Sticking to the traditional, these are some great mooncakes. Thin skin surrounding a firm but silky smooth lotus paste. Within, well seasoned, perfectly cooked salted egg yolks, not at all powdery. Lots of other filling options though no fruit filled snow skin and very sadly no teochew mooncakes, IMHO the absolute best made with layers of crisp dough surrounding traditional fillings, served ward. Sigh. Yes, we all know they are a solid Chinese bakery and we all know they make solid American style cakes but mooncakes make them special.. Reasonable prices. $10 / mooncake. Note: Despite the heavy road work on Dillingham due to the rail, access to the strip mall is relatively easy. Use a nav app ie Waze for the fastest construction bypass. I've been to Elvin's a few times before. After having lunch at Oshimas Ramen a few doors away,my wife went to get us some dessert. I have high praise for their Stawberry cake. The small interior houses a couple of display cases that show case available decorated cakes and cake slices. My friend recommended Elvin's bakery to me when I was looking for a Chinese bakery. It's a family run business so it looks nice, not fancy. Even though we didn't buy any other bake goods, they look nice and fresh. We bought the mango, lychee and passion fruit mousse cakes. (Sorry the picture only shown the lychee and passion fruit). Sadly my review of Elivin's bakery is not great. We picked up a slice of the recommended best seller strawberry shortcake cake, lilikoi cake, lemon bar and bolo Bao. The strawberry shortcake whipped frosting was not like whipped cream. It tasted waxy and not fluffy. It was not fresh whipped cream. The strawberries did not taste fresh either. The cake portion was on the dry side. 2 out of 5 stars. The lilikoi slice was not edible. Not sure if something was wrong here. The lilikoi topping was super sour. Maybe something happened? The cake was dry and old tasting. We ended up throwing it away. Three of us tried a taste and it was a no go. 1 out of 5 stars. Lemon bar. I enjoyed the lemon part. The crust was unfortunately not crisp or flaky. Maybe it was refrigerated too long. The bar was on the soft side. It is individually wrapped and the top will get messed up if your not careful how you open it up. 3 out of 5 stars. The Bolo Bao. A simple plain and average sweet bread. No filling. Just bread. 3 out of 5 stars. Service. Really nice lady helped us with our choices. She was sweet and informative. 5 out of 5 stars. You are charged 50 cents per box. The receipt is not itemized so you need to pay attention to the signage. The bakery is quaint and clean. It's located in the Kapalama Shopping Center. I can't believe I have never discovered this place because anything Mango is my weakness. They have a great selection of sweets and cakes to choose from to include Banana Bread, Cookies, and cakes. They even make wedding cakes. It was a tough decision but I went with the Lychee Mousse, Mango Mousse and the famous Stawberry Shortcake. The Lychee was good but the Mango is definitely addicting. I learned about this place from the Top star Honolulu yelper Nadine C. She so thoughtful and bought cakes for so many other people's birthday, including mine from here. They were all delicious...
