Things started out shaky with Valerie but in the end she did a great job. Due to some miscommunication she ended up creating a hole when creating an outlet. She came back and fixed the hole. On the positive, Valerie was able to install a light fixture and make it straight. She altered the housing and gave us a picture perfect light. read more

Found a company that not only does good work, but also has excellent customer service. Both are very hard to find these days. Valerie really knows her stuff and takes great pride in the work that she does. The first job she did for us was installing a chandelier in our dining area. She had a helper, Lizzy, and the two of them got the chandelier mounted pretty quickly. It looks great and I didn't have to worry about a lot of cleanup afterwards. They took care of that as they worked, which is something I really appreciate. Valerie also takes time to explain things which I also appreciate. She will definitely be the first on my contact list if I need any electrical work done. read more

Valerie is an excellent licensed electrician who is also an Oakland local! She has done several projects in our home including successfully trouble shooting our weird electrical work (we have an older house). She has reasonable prices for quality work that I know I can trust. I particularly like Valerie's style because she is punctual, logical, and explains the issues in a way I can understand. This is key because there are more and less expensive ways to go about fixing a problem and I felt like I could make an informed decision. She is also very respectful of our home. It is great to have a contractor create a quality finished product, while working around our newborn and the place looks great when she is done. She also may have saved our lives or at least our health by finding a gas leak under our house. Yikes! We didn't smell it. We asked for a quote, and even after several emails back and forth over the course of a few days with one line questions, we still didn't get any answer or any idea of what her baseline fees were or when she could come out. I can't recommend Valerie highly enough. I had a really weird electrical issue with the wiring of lights in my home. Because no one could give me a plausible answer as to what the problem was, I was getting really frustrated, not knowing who to trust nor who was giving me the correct information. After several mansplaining electricians and contractors had swung by to give me their version of events, Valerie visited. After giving her my standard spiel about what was going on, Valerie did something no one before her had done. She said "I need to get to the bottom of what is actually happen because I don't understand it, I can do that exploration right now," (and she told me her hourly fee). So I paid her and she got straight to work investigating. An hour later, she had a solution that was cheaper and easier than everyone else's suggestions and which required no permitting nor changing the look of my light fixtures. In fact, the solution was so simple that my partner and his friend did the work for me as a surprise when I was out of town. I feel bad, as I intended to employ Valerie to do that part, but I hope she knows that it's because she did such a great job of playing electrical detective that her services were not needed in the end. The least I can do is give a glowing review instead. The quotes I received from male electricians varied between $5k and $40k so I am extremely grateful to Valerie for saving me from that outrageousness. I hope I don't need too much electrical help in the future, but if I do, Valerie will always be first on my list of who to call. You won't regret hiring Valerie - she is thorough and she is great at explaining technical electrical concepts to a lay person like me. Thank you, truly. read more

Suzie Chan was highly recommended on my neighborhood listserv, and I wanted to have her replace our electrical panel, even thought her estimate was higher than the other contractor I was considering. Well, I'm still waiting for her to schedule the work. Last communication was a month ago, a terse reply to a follow up email I sent asking when she would be able to schedule the work at our house. I did not have a good experience working with Valerie. I scheduled an appointment two weeks in advance and she did not show up. I called her and she rescheduled. When she finally did come over she did not seem very interested in doing any of the work I needed to have done. She told me she'd get back to me in a week with an estimate. She never followed up. I reached out to her to see if she'd be sending me an estimate and she never responded. Really poor customer service. read more

When we bought our house, our inspection showed that we needed to replace the main panel. We had Suzi do this, and while we were having an electrician in the house, we came up with a laundry list of electrical updates we needed, including a new LED downlight over the shower, a ceiling fan, half a dozen outlets inside and outside the house, and a new porch light. Suzi was great and used the fixtures we provided (like the ceiling fan and porch light) as well as sourced the downlight, etc. I still have some drywall patching I need to do along the panel because they were not identical sizes, but Suzi left the right size pieces, so I should be able to patch & paint when I get around to it. :-) It would have been nice if she could have arranged for that, but she's not a GC, so it's fine. Prices were reasonable, and the upfront estimate is exactly what we paid. I will definitely use her again if and when we need anything else, and I recommend her to my friends. read more

Valerie Chan is awesome! I recently purchased a home in the Oakland hills with a rental unit below. Both needed some electrical upgrades. She is very busy but made time to give me an estimate. She is very knowledgeable and has had years of experience. She fit me into her tight schedule and completed my job just as promised. The job was more complex than we anticipated, but she was able to sort out the wiring issues and figure out what needed to go where. She is prompt, neat, organized and very efficient. She replaced a number of old receptacles with GFCI, ran a coax cable through our crawl space so it could go behind the TV instead of being a tripping hazard in the living room, added a conduit from existing circuit in the backyard, and helped install a porch light with old wiring with a handy timer. Suzie has done a number of jobs for me over the years, from installing an earthquake shut off valve for gas, to fixing other electricians mistakes, putting in new overhead lights, installing outdoor porch lighting, she even recommended and installed light timers that track the sun. When other electricians told us we needed 20k of work on our 100 yearold craftsman, suzie was able to tell us what absolutely had to be done now for safety and what could wait. Valerie is the best! She is a licensed electrical contractor and really knows her stuff. Valerie is extremely professional and has a strong work ethic. She is punctual and communicates well, and her prices are very reasonable. I have an old house (knob and tube) that needed numerous electrical upgrades. She added 3 outlets to each bedroom (originally each had 2 which were not grounded). This necessitated cutting through plaster walls which was done with a minimum of mess. Valerie was very respectful of my home and space. I was having a lot of other work done at the same time and she coordinated with the other workers and insured that things ran smoothly with as little disruption as possible to the electrical service. She added outlets in the bathroom and a light in the closet. Non-grounded outlets throughout the house were exchanged for GFI, and she installed an outdoor motion sensor light. The biggest job was that I needed the entire electrical panel upgraded to accommodate solar panels. Valerie is extremely knowledgeable about all the PG&E requirements in addition to the city's regulations. She explained things to me every step of the way, did a lot of creative problem solving to make everything work out perfectly, and gave me options that saved me money. Valerie goes above and beyond the scope of her job. For example, when I had to move my computer to another area of the house, she hooked up some lines so that it would work. After the ceilings were painted, she helped me reinstall the celing fan blades which she had not taken down. She even signed up to be a PACE loan contractor for me so that I could finance the panel upgrade through the PACE program along with my solar installation.
