Here's a fun story:…read more On Sunday, May 24th, I replaced a lightbulb in a standing lamp in my bedroom and tried to turn it on. It didn't go on. I discovered that about 2/3 of my outlets and lights weren't working. I flipped switches on my electrical panel multiple times; power was not restored. I called Five or Free, went through a screening with an AI assistant, and got through to Chloe, a dispatcher/scheduler (i.e. not an electrician) clearly working from home, with a baby in the background. Chloe was sweet and helpful and got me an appointment on Tuesday, May 26th. I had to take the 2:00-4:00 slot (I work mornings), canceling a tutoring session to do so. This was my choice, of course, but I did want to get lights and internet working in my home. The electrician was a no-show on Tuesday. Soon after 4 PM (the outer end of the window), I called Chloe (again the AI rigmarole first); she apologized. She said that there'd been a miscommunication and that the electrician had gone to another job. I asked if he could come to me next -- despite it probably being outside of the electrician's working hours -- since it was Five or Free's mistake; she said no, contritely. She set up a visit for the next day. Electrician Tommy Wilson came on Wednesday, May 27th, checked the electrical panel, noticed that one breaker was loose, and said that he or another electrician would need to come on a different day and conduct a more involved inspection, probably going into the garage and checking out the panel therein. He did a write up of the issue and showed it to me (but didn't email it to me, as I later discovered). He said he'd contacted the scheduler and gotten me an appointment for Friday, May 29th, and that I'd need to pay $475 up front, which I reluctantly did. After the second inspection, Tommy explained, the electrician would give me an estimate -- in other words, the $475 was just the base fee; there could potentially be an additional charge depending on the nature of the problem and the scope of work required to repair it. I got stood up yet again on Friday the 29th and called another electrician, JC Electrical Repair Services. Juan Carlos (JC) squeezed me in on Saturday morning before his other appointments. He whooshed in, identified the problem (a standing lamp that needs to be retired), replaced the loose breaker, let me confirm that all lights and outlets were now working, gave me a safety recommendation (a space heater I'd been using was too powerful for my circuits and thus dangerous to use), and tightened all the screws on the electrical panel, noting that any electrician should do that during a visit regardless of the purpose of the visit. He did all of this over the course of about 25 minutes. Later on Saturday, Vincent from Five or Free called. (He had called a few days earlier to check in.) He apologized profusely, explaining that they were short-staffed and stretched thin. He mentioned that they'd hired an electrician who's in the military; this fellow had recently been called to active duty, leaving them an electrician short. I noted that I had actually missed out on income twice, canceling a tutoring session on Tuesday because I needed to book the 2PM-4PM window, then doing so again on Friday for the same reason, and was out $160 as a consequence. Vincent again apologized and said that my payment ($475) would be refunded, emphasising the need to wait 3-5 business days before the refund would go through. I explained that because the charge was still pending, I couldn't yet dispute it. (I will check my credit card activity every day until this is resolved.) Conclusion: Five or Free is a terribly-run company, understaffed and with too many parties attempting to coordinate with one another. It also hires less-than-competent electricians. JC Alameda Electrician Services, on the other hand, rocks. It's just one electrician, I think: Juan Carlos Curisinche Gonzales, 510 828-4993. Give him a call if you need an electrician in Alameda County.

My wife and I recently bought our first home. It's an old home so we had a budget to do some needed renovations upon moving in. I found Micah Electric Co. on Yelp and reached out to him for said renovations because he was local, I liked his website, and we share a first name! I'm really glad I did. My wife and I really enjoyed working with Micah and his crew. Micah was very warm and helped us as first time homeowners navigate what work to prioritize given our relatively small budget. I also want to highlight the Micah Electric crew. All of his electricians were very nice, respectful and professional. My wife and I (and our dog) bonded with the crew over the three days they were working on our property. The scope of work ranged from doing some additional electrical code-work around the house (installing GFCI receptacles, capping 2-pronged outlets) installing a few light-fixtures and removing all the knob and tube from our attic. We're really happy with the quality of the work. Lastly, I want to highlight again how much I appreciated Micah advising us on what work to prioritize. We ended up doing more work than we thought we would (we took out all the knob and tube from our attic!!) but that's great because we also managed to stay around what we had initially budgeted for the project. I always felt like I could email, call, or text Micah with questions or concerns I had about the project. A huge cypress fell during the wind storm of March 22 and knocked out power to the area, destroyed our roof, and demolished our connection to the power grid. A previous electrician told me that the service could not be upgraded without having PG&E move the gas equipment. Micah worked with PG&E to figure out how to get the electrical equipment installed. After speaking to five or so electricians, we decided to go with Jose for some help running some…read morewiring at home, and fixing a broken outlet. I'm relatively handy but there are some things that are better left to a professional - namely making holes in my walls/ceiling and messing with high voltage electrical! Jose was prompt, communicative and was able to fit us in for a full day's worth of work with a week's notice. His rates are reasonable and he was very matter of fact about items that should be trivial to do myself. This was refreshing compared to other electricians we spoke to, who were very quote happy! (For example, he mentioned that we could update some halogen recessed lights to LED simply by simply replacing the lightbulbs at $5 a light - other electricians blindly suggested replacing all the lights instead at about $150 a light!) Initially when I asked for his help running a motion sensor to a driveway, which is controlled by our somewhat unusual (but popular in the 80s...) low voltage lighting system, he was one of few electricians who actually took the time to understand the constraints of the system and accurately scope out the work required. I had him help run wiring and install some ceiling and outdoor speakers in our kitchen and deck and the work looks great. He also suggested placement of additional power sockets that will help tidy up wiring when we wall mount a television and install an A/V receiver. Additionally, he was able to fix two broken power sockets with minimal intrusion, which my wife is very happy about! Looking forward to having Jose back again for more electrical projects that are next on my list!

We needed our 1940's house completely rewired from the original knob and tube wiring. Darius and…read morecrew did a terrific job, completely exceeding all our expectations for this project. Our house is roughly 1700 sq. ft., and for all the rewiring and adding circuits, they made just one hole that needed to be patched(which they patched up themselves). They were absolutely methodical with the rewire, we were so pleased with their work. It was involved and they handled it like champs. Our project took only about 7 days, and they were able to get our city inspection arranged and passed quickly after they had finished. We were so grateful for Darius' professionalism, attention to detail and care with our house. We would definitely use his company again. One more note: We've lived in this house for almost 20 years, and were sort of nervous about the impact of having this project under way with ourselves and all of our belongings in here. We did move some things around so they would have easy access to outlets, etc. But otherwise we didn't have to do much. And there was zero impact on our daily routines. Darius and his team made everything really easy, and they kept the house so clean (they cleaned up every day). From getting our estimate to the completion of this project we knew we were in good hands and working with very skilled professionals.

He re-wired for 220 in the kitchen and installed the induction stove outlet plus ran wire for and installed the electric car charger. He and his team were also careful on site. We had some other contractor scheduling snafu's and Darius adapted with us smoothly. Will use again.
