Food was good. I loved their enchiladas and quesadilla. However, I ordered a burrito with black beans, rice, cheese, sour cream, and avocado and I got a steak and rice burrito lol. I'm sorry to say, but this was the worst Mexican food I've had. We ordered three meals. The carne asada plate, a beef sandwich, and chicken taquitos. The taquitos were soggy and broke apart when I picked them up. The chicken was dry and hard with no flavor. The meat in the sandwich and the plate was terrible. No flavor and chewy like jerky, but couldn't swallow it. The salad that came with the plate was not only soggy but old too. You could see that the lettuce was wilted and old. The lady that helped us seemed grumpy like it was an inconvenience to take our order. The Mexican restaurant next door has more people dining.. should have seen that as a sign. So I have a thing for hole in the wall Mexican joints and I can't pass through Bishop without eating in this place at least once. When you walk in it will probably be full but somehow I manage to sit in the same booth every time I arrive. The staff never change faces so you won't get bad service. I have had it all from burritos, tacos, chevechi, etc. Despite the hole in the wall feel, the food has always been on point. Pick your favorite thing and I'll assure you a great meal. The salsa and chips are always fresh and the sauces on the table are perfect to spice things up. Stopped by with my dad on our way to Lake Tahoe and it was the best decision we could've made! The food was absolutely delicious, true homemade taste. The orange juice was freshly squeezed and so good! My dad ordered the chilaquiles rojos(red) with carne asada, refried beans (they offer 3 options of beans), and an over medium egg. I had the chilaquiles verdes(green) with country potatoes (they offer 2 options of potatoes) and scrambled eggs. The salsas for both chilaquiles were delicious and the carne asada tasted like actual fresh meat not the gross frozen stuff! I was really hungry, and thought that soup wouldn't be enough. The rest of my party ordered open face carnitas torta and a California burrito. We were given mild & spicy salsa and homemade chips to munch on while waiting for our food. Everything tastes good. You know that it's authentic Mexican food because this place is packed with local folks come for dinner. Now, I regretted not getting menudo, it would have been amazing like the previous reviewer mentioned. Price is reasonable. Dishes are around $10-$12, and portion is big, I'm full to the brim now. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. They have a nice selection of Mexican soda and beer in glass bottles. Bishop is my hometown and I try to patronize the businesses when I am there. We tried El Ranchito last week and ordered standard fair from the menu: a bean and cheese burrito and taquitos. The food was crummy, and it's pretty hard to mess up a bean and cheese burrito! But the taquitos, which were fried to hard shell, as would be expected, were then covered in a very watery salsa which made the fried tortillas wet and gooey, and awful. By far one of the best, most authentic Mexican food restaurants I've ever been to! Not a huge restaurant and not fancy in any way, but quite a bit of comfortable seating available and the food is incomparable. From the salsa and tortilla chips they give you as an appetizer to the meals each of our group had (and got stuffed on), everything was absolutely delicious. We tried the chile relleno, shredded beef taquitos, carne asada plate, camarones al mojo de ajo, and carne asada street tacos. Flavors were amazing, especially the garlic sauce used for the camarones. The beans and rice are incredible, abuelita worthy! It looks like they used fresh ingredients for the rice, not canned, and it's amazing. Service was also great, staff is friendly, welcoming, and attentive. Really wanted some good Mexican food. I ordered a tamale and enchilada combo with rice and beans. It was ok. I asked for no sauce on the tamale but it was smothered with sauce. The chips were nice and warm. The salsa was ok, nothing special. Service was slow, unless you are a regular. There are many other Mexican restaurants in the area. Not quite sure about the great reviews. We sat in the back of the restaurant by the kitchen, almost everything comes out of the microwave. My taco salad was probably one of the most bland and worst I have had. My significant other liked his vegetarian burrito but it looked like it was made of frozen veggies. We strolled through the streets of Bishop twice and loved the shops. There were a few Mexican restaurants in Bishop and we chose El Ranchito because it had big booths. Although we were a group of 3 adults and 2 kids, we had just skied all day and wanted to spread out. Chips and salsa were the highlight of the meal. Both their spicy and mild salsa are delicious. Tastes homemade but never asked to confirm. Service is great. Food is served quickly. They have a huge menu from Mexican dishes to burgers. I had chile rellenos which was just okay. The rice was very flavorful and beans were good. My son made "make your own burrito" and it was huge! Sadly, he didn't like it, said it was too dry. We ended up bringing the rest home. My daughter's fish tacos were great. Grilled tilapia! The most unfortunate part of the meal was that they don't have a liquor license so no margaritas. This is a good, honest and basic little restaurant. The menu is quite extensive so I certainly haven't even begun to try most of their selection, but the chile relleno, tamales and tacos are great, and the rice recipe is outstanding. The refritos are awesome but you can also order whole beans in brown or black. If you are lookiing for new and fancy "upper-class" surroundings go elsewhere. There are several other mexican food restaurants in town and none of them are bad. But I like this place the best because everything is fresh and homemade, with choices from mariscos to hamburgesas. Staff is friendly and down-to-earth, service is not stilted or pretentious. Prices are reasonable. On our way home from Mammoth this was the only Mexican restaurant that offered outdoor seating. Tons of variety in the menu. Staff was very nice and accommodating. As our first official food stop on our way to a long Mammoth camping/lodging weekend, El Ranchito won over familiar places my traveling party and I have been to as well as other places we found on Yelp. In many cases, they weren't open yet or simply didn't sound appealing, so this Mexican eatery was selected. Did we choose wisely or did our luck run out!?: "Mexican" Shrimp Omelet ($9.15) - I didn't eat breakfast often, but when I did I usually opted for my beloved omelet. This meal consisted of whole shrimp, Mexican shredded cheese, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, chopped serrano peppers, and three eggs, all served with your choice of hash browns, country potatoes or refried beans and your choice of toast or biscuit and gravy. Since it was "no-meat Friday" for me but wanted something of substance, camarones called my name. Once this platter arrived, my mouth was agape at the size of the portion. Stopped in Bishop for the night. Very cool Big little town. Felt like Mexican so we found this restaurant. Everything thing was very tasty. I had a machaca omelette and partner had chili verde. Had a great time at Yosemite National Park but coming to El Ranchito was the cherry on top of this wonderful vacation. Maria who was our waitress was the star of this place with sweet and helpful manner helped us choose our comida. From the 2 steak tacos to the cheese enchilada plate all this food was 5 star to us. Beware that there's 3 consecutive restaurants so make sure is El Ranchito the one you pick, what helped us made our decision was looking from the outside and noticing a Sherrifs officer eating in here. Walk in the back entrance to El Ranchito. You walk through the kitchen and it's CLEAN, and you'll be greeted with a smile by the cooks! The food is very well done and at a good price point. Like the earlier review on here...the chips are the best in town, period! They serve both American and Mexican food and do a great job at both. The Beef Deluxe is my favorite of the hot sandwiches. BBQ sauce, grilled steak, onions, cheese, on a toasted french roll. Plus, a side of fries (ask for seasoning salt to really make them pop!) The Mexican fare is all good and done very authentic. They also have a killer Campechana on the seafood menu. And portion sizes are excellent. If you're in town and it's breakfast time...here's the place to go! Bacon done just right, coffee that's hot, chorizo to die for, and all with great service!!! This place has a nice coffeeshop/diner feel to it, and is a locals-favorite. I used to frequent the restaurant next door, Amigos, until their quality in meat dropped significantly. In my search for Mexican food on my way to and from June Lake, I decided to try the next closest place, Ranchito, which is right next door. The customer service was very good! The young man brought our menus over quickly, was very attentive, and frequently checked on us to make sure everything was okay. The asada burrito was huge and their refried beans are to die for! As a kid, my mother would take me to Mexico every summer so I have had my fair share of homemade, authentic refried beans. Mexican restaurants are usually not that great when I eat out because I'm so used to my mothers cooking. However, El Ranchito has actually met the expectation of Mexican Food, and I do strongly believe everything here is fresh because as soon as I ordered the orange juice, my server cut up some oranges and put them in the squeezer and served me the best OJ I have had in a while. I got the breakfast enchilada and would recommend that if you're going to have breakfast here. I just wish I can try the other dishes in the menu but I am just a tourist who has to leave today. This weekend I ordered the homemade menudo with handmade corn tortillas and My husband had the huevos rancheros. Super delish and tasty. Everything is on point. The Fresh salsa, warm chips with their assorted Chile sauces are so satisfying. This place doesn't fall short of having authentic Mexican food. Every dish I've had all these years keep Me coming back. NO disappointments. Ana our waitress was super friendly and gave us the best service. Everyone at El Ranchito goes the extra mile.
