My partner, son, and I stopped here for dinner on our way to Mammoth and had an absolutely unacceptable experience. Despite arriving before the evening rush, we waited over an hour for our food. With very few dining options in the area--and while celebrating my partner's birthday--we expected at minimum a decent meal and basic respect for our time. What arrived was inedible. The meat was so tough it could not be chewed. When we brought this to the waitress's attention, the cook came out and explained that their usual distributor had delivered the wrong meat, and this was what they were serving. So the restaurant knowingly served substandard food and simply hoped customers wouldn't complain. More than half of my meal and a significant portion of my partner's were left untouched. In response, they applied a laughable 15% discount--an insulting gesture given the quality of the food and the length of the wait. I'm appalled that this establishment would charge full price for food they knew was poor quality. I regret stopping here at all and am leaving this review to spare others the same mistake. read more

I drive by this restaurant every time I go to Mammoth and have always wanted to try it. After 15+ years, I finally stopped by. The service was great. Visited in November. Not sure I'll come back. There was a live musician, but not Spanish songs or Latin music. Seems to be a white washed Mexican restaurant. I had lemon chicken. The chicken was flavorful. Salsa, rice, beans, not so much. Disappointed to not find any warm drinks except coffee and tea. It was 38 outside. You'd think they would be prepared for the skiers and snowboarders. They do have a list of non-alcoholic drinks. But only have Agua Frescas in the summer. Decor is well worn. Dust and cobwebs on the light fixtures hanging over the tables. Overall, it's decent, but there are better places nearby. read more

It's important to have go-to food stops driving 395. This is now one of those places for me. It's an easy stop on the highway with ample parking. I had a taco and tamale combo. Both were flavorful. Dear daughter has a veggie burrito which she devoured so assuming it was great. Hubs had a steak burrito and he enjoyed it. Over all the food is fresh, hot, and lovingly prepared. They had around three waiters/waitresses for their little restaurant, yet when I walked into the door it took probably around 10 minutes for someone to even get me a table (many were open already). Quirky and mediocre are qualities that together disqualify a business from making a good first impression. A commercial on Bishop CA-based oldie/indie-format KSRW 92.5 & 96.5 FM--the BEST radio station ANYWHERE--convinced me to seek out this business on Sierra Highway (U.S. 395) in Bishop, on the way to Reno. The 25 mph speed limit through downtown made it easy to examine each outdoor business sign on both sides of the road. It wasn't there, so around the bend heading to West Bishop was the last hope, and suddenly, there it was, on the hilly side. The speed limit had increased to 35 mph on that stretch, so I "hung a U" legally and backtracked to the parking lot of Astorga's Mexican Restaurant for a prospective carnitas burrito. Getting down to brass tacks, Astorga's is not geared for walk-in, carry-out orders. The hostess said the carnitas burrito would be up in about 15 minutes, at which time I learned salsa is not offered gratis with take-out. My prolonged, incredulity-based plea caught the attention of higher-ups in the kitchen, and they capitulated to a just-enough cup of red salsa. Further wheedling yielded a sample-size cup of green. Obviously, a handful of chips would have been beyond the pale. Bottom line on the burrito: It was huge, served wet-style with red enchilada sauce on top; picturesque, nestled in its toney, reusable black plastic container with semitransparent top. Later, the carnitas content proved to be unforgivably skimpy, and the innards' flavor frustratingly bland. The price was shocking enough, with a take-out surcharge to boot! This ain't L.A., babies. Glad I vied victoriously for their precious salsa. Two stars for supporting KSRW. read more

This restaurant was recommended to us by Rick from Highlands RV and we were glad for the recommendation. Friendly waitress was quick to greet us, seat us and take our drink order. Drinks were brought out right away (Mango margaritas were amazing!) and then took our dinner order, which was brought out only 20 minutes later. Pretty fast for a busy Friday night! We pass this way often on our way to La Quinta and back so we'll definitely return for another great meal. read more

Bishop local, have been eating here for years. I've eaten at Astorga's for the last time today. I wonder if they're under new management or if they hired all new staff because everything was severely lacking. To start, the service was never good, but today it was something else. Took 10 minutes to get sat, empty tables in the dining room that haven't been cleaned yet. Once we were seated, the top of the table was sticky. The staff themselves were very nice and polite, but at one point, when receiving our food, the wait staff waved a fly away with his hand, but didn't do anything to deal with the fly problem. We were batting flies throughout our meal. The food typically was great, but they have appeared to have changed the portion sizes. I got the shredded beef enchiladas that were half filled with meat. The red sauce is different and the meat tasted like it wasn't even seasoned with salt and pepper. I must have gotten the bottom of the pot of rice, because much of my rice was the burnt bits that stick to the side of the pan. Beans were fine flavor wise, but all of our food was lukewarm, like it had been sitting in the window for some time. The most egregious would be the $8 horchata. $50 later and we can say we are full, but it is so unfortunate to waste your calories on a bad meal. read more

This place serves up Authentic Mexican food. I felt like I was eating at my mom's house. Excellent menu. Light not super greasy. Something for everyone, even burgers. We had the fish tacos, flautas, taquitos, burrito and enchilada and ALL of our dishes were excellent! Stop by if you are driving through Bishop for a great meal. From what I could tell they have good drinks too. Clean indoor and outdoor, and super friendly staff. read more

If you are craving amazing Mexican food this is the place. I've been here twice now and it has been outstanding both times. Be patient when you order. We drive up from 2 hours away with our dog about every other month to sit and eat outside. We spend about 150 on lunch and drinks and tip well. Today we were refused to be allowed to have service outside. Will not return and will notify all our friends about this treatment. Hope they get enough local business to stay open. read more

The restaurant looks great clean and warm on a colder night. Service is good they seated us quickly. The chips are thicker but crispy the salsa matches it well. Carne asada burrito was delicious the meat was near perfect hands down one of the best burritos I've had. Horchata is good but they take forever to refill your drinks (not a free refill), to be fair the restaurant was kinda busy. Chicken enchilada with green sauce the enchilada was amazing well done the salsa was mild but flavorful the beans where on the runny side not bad just not as thick as I personally like. Yelp hours are incorrect from hours posted on window. Arrived around 3pm and they're were many people sitting outside in the patio area. Once we walked in and sat outside. They closed the patio gates and locked their front door. People were confused seeing people eating at the patio but everything was locked. Definitely a sign posted why they are closed early would avoid people trying to still come in. They were closing early because they were running low on ingredients. Again, a sign posted for others would help. Luckily they were nice enough to still serve us even though they locked up the gates after we walked in. I'm going to give them some slack. Service you had to flag down the server for everything. Utensils, water, refills, plates, etc. they do seem to favor the locals a bit more. Food is alright. The steak in the fajitas had a lot of fatty pieces. Ordered the fiesta platter and kinda expected more/bigger portions. The taquitos were bite size. I've had egg rolls bigger than that. Also restaurant seating area was dirty and menus sticky. That is such a turn off. The dust on the ceiling fans was thick and grimy. Makes one wonder about the cleanliness of the kitchen. Everytime I go to Bishop I make it a point to have lunch at Astorga's. It's great Mexician food. I haven't tried all of the dishes, but whenever, I order my combo plate of a taco, enchilada rice and bean's I'm getting some pretty good food. There always seems to be a good crowd of people who eat lunch or dinner there so it's always a good sign that it's great food. read more

Breakfast review. Away from the busy center of town and a locals' spot, this place appears to be a family owned and run spot. Generous sized plates of hot, fresh food. Friendly service and clean restrooms. The menu options are simple, the flavors are authentic and tasty. I ordered the asada omelette. Meat was great, can taste the comino seasoning. Refried beans and seasoned potatoes made for good side partners, especially when all rolled up into the hot tortillas. Hubby had shredded beef breakfast enchiladas plate. So we eat there very often. When we order food to go, like tonight Fajitas at 31.00 delivered and get no salsa or chips it makes us dissatisfied. Who orders mexican food without getting at least some Salsa. We eat there so often and eat at least 2 baskets of chips and 2 bowls of salsa and don't get charged. I just don't get it.
