The food is quite tasty, the atmosphere is casual and friendly. The menu makes an effort to identify vegan options, but then the only items that were marked vegan in October 2021 were some of the sauce options--no actual meals. A few tweaks to the menu could go a long way to making El Ranchito more vegan and vegetarian friendly. After talking about the possibility of a veggie scramble alongside hash browns, our server successfully navigated me to a cheese-free veggie burrito, which was delicious--it just looked a little sad, all alone on the plate when it arrived. All things considered, it was a better ad hoc breakfast than I've found in many mainstream joints. My dad and I agreed that our food was better here than at Jack's Restaurant down the street. read more

Cute little Mexican Restaurant in small town Bishop. We stopped by here after a long day out climbing and were very intrigued by the sea-themed setting. The food was delicious and even tastier when you are famished. That being said the meat could have been cooked better and not exactly the best Mexican food you'll ever have. 4/5. Very tasty - if you're looking for breakfast this is a great spot to try. The lunch and dinner menu looks amazing too, but the breakfast is top notch. Two full pages of options, including traditional Mexican favorites. They have about 10 different omelette options - highly recommend the chili verde omelet with side of tortillas! Do not give this restaurant any business. My sister-in-law ordered and paid for food online, then when we got there to pick it up, they claimed that they don't have an online ordering capability. They then proceeded to tell us that it was a scam and they've had a few people come in saying that they've ordered and paid online and to contact the credit card company because there's nothing they can do. It was late and we were already there so we placed a new order and I paid. Flash forward to today and my SIL just found out that her cc company said that the restaurant told them that they did receive the order and fulfilled it - basically that the transaction was legitimate and not to reverse the charges. So there was a scam, but it was perpetuated by the restaurant. These guys are crooks. Do NOT give them any business. read more

DO NOT COME HERE. Worst customer service. Rude server made me uncomfortable. First, we walked in and were waiting for a table. Both employees did not acknowledge us or even smile. They just looked at us then continued their work. Minutes later, I approached the server at the bar and she looked miserable as she said we can choose our table. The restaurant was filthy. The only semi clean table was right behind a cart filled with dirty dishes. If I leaned back, my hair would have been in the dirty dish bin. The bathroom had no hand soap. I saw the male server walking toward me so I said "excuse me" and he put his finger up and continued walking past me. Then, the same man came to take our order. I wanted to know how much a side of rice was since it was not on the menu. Apparently, this question ticked him off. I think he thought that I was only going to order rice and not a meal. He said something like..."really?! How much you got!" And I said again, "how much is a side of rice?" He appeared to get a little more heated by this question, put his hand on the booth and leaned pretty close to my face. The look in his eyes actually scared me. He shook his head in disgust, kind of nodded his head and said"How much you got! For you, $10.00!" I felt so uncomfortable we got up right in that moment and left. This is a difficult review to write because I loved the food here. I loved it so much i ate here 4 times in 3 days. It's obvious that the food is the only thing they focus on. The food gets 5 stars. With that being said we'll move on... The place is filthy and cluttered with stuff on all counters. No one that works there seems to clean anything. The floors look like they haven't been mopped in weeks. If you sit in one spot and look in any direction you'll notice dirt and crumbs built up everywhere. It's gross. The atmosphere is horrible. The walls are painted dark brown (probably to hide the dirt). The place has no life to it. There seem to be 2 servers that work there. Neither are friendly. The woman works hard and is always moving. The man should not be allowed to speak to customers. He obviously doesn't understand customer service. He moves slow and prioritizes his conversations with friends over serving guests. I feel bad because I think he's the owner. This place needs to be deep cleaned and painted. They need hire new friendly servers that can be held to standards that compliment the quality of the food. read more

I not only love the town of Bishop, it's been a bit since I ate at el Ranchito... But I have to say that it's so amazingly good. I enjoyed the food so much I smiled with every bite. Not to mention on a late Tuesday cold night they took my order and it was made to perfection. It was a take out order and even so the crew there smiled and thanked me as I thanked them. Worst service, waiter told me No when I told him I was ready to order. So much happened with the whole place it just makes me mad thinking about it. I asked what the 2 $2 charge was and he couldnt explain it, yelling at me that California has taxes and the beers (which we had paid for..) were more expensive...? We stopped here for dinner on a Saturday night on the way home from Lake Tahoe. No, just No. Go somewhere else. There were only a few customers yet the food seemed reheated. I was able to see into the kitchen from my table and the microwave was used frequently, which was apparent from the LAYERS of OLD fingerprints. First off, they are doing construction so be prep for the slowest service and folding tables and chairs in a partially put together dining room. I didn't care as I was trying to feed three young children who were going crazy after a day of driving in the car. It looks like they are cooking the food out back in the alley and bringing it in. We had the kid's hamburger, tacos Americano combo, and the carnitas chimichanga. The kiddos did not like the burger at all and barely ate any. Hubby said that his tacos were very bland. My carnitas chimi was flavorful and I liked it. Rice and beans were nothing special. Chips and salsa were fine. Had iced tea that was not refilled. Service was so slow and they were struggling at front of house. I overheard one of the servers say she lost a ticket and asked people what they had ordered. We waited for about ten minutes for someone to bring us change. Someone came in and was waiting for awhile for an online order. Manuel was the horrible waiter I dealt with, first of all he didn't give me a menu I had to ask him for one, which he seemed annoyed by. I asked if I could do 2 separate orders, he already seemed annoyed. I then got my receipt for the orders, one I was paying cash the other was credit card. I then asked him what the C Charge was for me paying cash he said " Oh that's just a charge we do for every order" I said excuse me? I'm paying cash though it's obvious that C charge is credit card. He then decided to mock me and tell me " oh you mean you can't pay an extra dollar? Is it too much." I rolled my eyes and try to just ignore it, I really wished I would of just walked out. I then asked if it was possible to get chips And salsa with my order, he then said "Extra Charge for that" I replied with well isn't it complimentary with the food? It's family owned and operated, and truly a "mom and pop" restaurant. Lucky me, as on two different days, I had the opportunity to enjoy breakfast at El Ranchito, where on both occasions, I was served the best refried beans that I've ever eaten. Gee, as you enter the restaurant, it doesn't look like a Mexican restaurant, as it looks more like a diner, complete with checkered tile floors, counter and vinyl seats. But trust me, Mi Ranchito is one of the best Mexican restaurants that I've ever had the pleasure to visit in California. Oh, if Mexican cuisine isn't what you have in mind, they also serve burgers, "diner-style" breakfasts, and much more. However... El Ranchito serves menudo on weekends, any time the restaurant is open. It's Saturday evening, and menudo is on my mind! El Ranchito opens for breakfast at 7 O'clock in the morning, which is a rarity for a Mexican restaurant. However, if you're a breakfast person, and if you crave the best Mexican breakfast in the Eastern Sierras, you owe it to yourself to stop by El Ranchito. If I can give it zero stars, I would do it. The only pro of going to this place is the staff who seemed friendly. And that's about it. I had ordered chicken tacos. Those corn tacos seemed like they were microwaved and not fresh. The corners were so hard. I would have ignored everything if the chicken was good. That chicken was extremely dry and felt old. I had chew chew chew chew. And the rice, don't even get me started on that. It was soo dry and lacked flavor. And the price felt too expensive for this kind of food. When you walk in and see locals dining here you know you've found a gem. The ambiance is...rustic, but I have been craving some traditional California Mexican food and this totally hit the spot. Service was friendly. But by far the best part is the food. We ordered the ceviche tostada app and it was fresh and delicious. We chose mild salsa with the chips and it was juicy red and a little sweet just like I like it. My daughter got a homemade pancake, it was huge, homemade and deliciously drizzled with caramel and whip cream. My son ordered a cheeseburger from the kids menu because he's 7 and can't quite appreciate Mexican food yet. I was grateful they had some "American" options for the kids. Hubby and I both had the tostada salad with chicken and it was fresh and tasty, with a variety of fresh sauce/salsas to pour on. You can tell everything' was homemade and very fresh. We were passing through Bishop and stopped in for breakfast this morning. We attempted to enter through the front but it was posted to enter through the back. Of ciursevwe walked around vack went inside and were directed inside and were seated at an empty booth. They have some areas corded off for distancing. We sat the girl brought over menus and we looked over the menu to make our choice of what to eat. The inside seemed older but clean. My husband ordered a orange juice and I got water. The juice is actually fresh squeezed which was impressive and yummy. We got 2 Monday specials. Bacon eggs and potatoes and toast. We order our eggs scrambled and crispy bacon and country potatoes instead of hashbrowns, we got corn tortillas in place in toast. Food was made in a timely manner. Everything just how we wanted it. I asked for salsa you can get mild or hot. I got mild so tasty. Prices are very moderate. I must say we recommend this place and would come back to eat when in town again. Food was okay. Shredded Beef tasted a few days old. Saw a lot of microwaving happening in the kitchen. Staff was not good. A few teenagers making obscene comments, cursing (in front of kids) and one waitress trying to keep it all running. Lots of junk in the place, and it seemed kinda dirty overall. Warning! if you are passing through and thinking "eh, this place looks decent on yelp, let's check it out". Don't fall for the semi-decent photos and yelp reviews of people who have clearly never really had good Mexican food before. Like other reviews down below, the first think you notice upon entering is that this place is not sanitary nor well taken care of whatsoever. Not to mention there is a lingering stench of some chemical sort. Now to the food, it is bland, mediocre, basic and definitely not authentic. I ordered chilaquiles and the sauce literally tasted sour. The main reason why I felt this place was review worthy was the after effects of this disaster of a meal. Within a few hours of eating my husband got diarrhea, my 5 year old threw up twice and I felt heavily nauseas. We just so happened to be up the hill at Sabrina so once this all transpired we immediately decided to head back to town to talk to a manager because it was unacceptable. The "stand-in supervisor" was standoffish at first, even making claims that "I can't refund you because I don't know what you ate last night, which could have caused the sickness". Little did she know we were camping and had fruits, applesauce and goldfish since we forgot the charcoal to grill. LOL, I told her I HIGHLY doubted that was the culprit. Finally she said she would pass on the message to the owner, and I asked if I could speak to him and she obliged. The man I spoke to (I believe his name was Eddie) was very kind, understanding and apologetic and assured he would "Look into this matter" and would "Be glad to issue a refund for the inconvenience". Long story short, never got the refund, nothing but BS from this sh**hole. Long story short, save your money!! Go elsewhere!! Bishop is my hometown and I try to patronize the businesses when I am there. We tried El Ranchito last week and ordered standard fair from the menu: a bean and cheese burrito and taquitos. The food was crummy, and it's pretty hard to mess up a bean and cheese burrito! But the taquitos, which were fried to hard shell, as would be expected, were then covered in a very watery salsa which made the fried tortillas wet and gooey, and awful. Lastly, which was actually my first clue, the place is not clean. Our waitress was delightful... I'm sorry to her for leaving this review, but she wasn't making the food. read more
