Good bakery, mediocre sandwiches, shitty service It was a long line and wait before getting to the front of the sandwich line to order, which was understandable since it was lunch time. Once getting to the counter to order, the lady helping me didn't seem that pleasant. As a matter of fact, no one at the sandwich counter was smiling or seemed like they had a good attitude. I ordered a Turkey Club Sandwich and the BBQ turkey sandwich. Once my mom and I got to the register, it took a LONG time before the employee at the register (Ruiz) rang us up. She seemed like she was doing other tasks and had no urgency WHATSOEVER in continuing to help the next customer in such a LONG line. Once she finally got to the register, the first thing I did was point to the Turkey Club box to let her know it was Turkey club and she immediately CUT ME OFF and said, "I know what it is" and then a second later said, "oh I didn't realize there wasn't a label." She was incredibly SNAPPY and didn't smile, which ruined my day. Overall, I wasn't content with the service at the sandwich counter. The inadequate service plus the BBQ turkey sandwich to be BARELY adequate, was completely underwhelming. Later on, I went to the area with all the baked goods and was excited to see the vast selection! The ladies there were very warm, super forthcoming to help, and absolutely pleasant. Marie was incredibly patient with all my questions and requests for everything I picked out. I was happy with her service since she was very sweet and pleasant. On our way home from Lake Tahoe we stop by the famous Erick Schat Bakkery for lunch and to pick up homemade bread. This place was packed when we arrived around 11am. Luckily for us we were able to find a parking spot. If you think the parking waa busy inside the shop was nuts. The good thing is that the staff was fantastic and quick. The lines was moving quick. The freshly made to order sandwich line was long but quick. You just have to know what you want when your the next person to order. Whenever I am heading to Yosemite or Mammoth Mountain, this place is a must stop for us. I love walking in and smelling their fresh bread baking. They offer a great sandwich bar and what makes these sandwiches so good is all about their homemade bread. Each loaf of bread is baked in their European Stone Hearth Ovens. They use fresh ingredients and no chemicals. So many choices of their homemade bread offered including their original Volkoren bread, sourdough, rye, raisin, and sheepherder. It's like the traditional cinnamon roll's raunchy cousin. - Pastrami sandwich - 10/10: good lord this is delicious. Easily top 5 sandwiches I've ever had. Hefty and filling for sure. The meat isn't your run-of-the-mill, dry, salty pastrami that you'll get at your local deli. They use premium naval cuts that are lightly seasoned, juicy, fatty, and super tender. The Swiss is also soft and spongy, very similar to mozzarella. You'd be satisfied just eating this by itself. And the rye bread is artisinal elite level, as expected. Freshly baked and super soft. I visited Schats on a solo road trip up the 395 to celebrate my birthday. I had heard much about this famous bakery, from its sheepherder sandwiches to the pull apart sweet breads, this bakery certainly did not disappoint. Food: When you first walk in, the impression you get with Schats is "Wow". And wowed you shall be because the whole store is absolutely stacked with breads, cookies, savory loaves, twists, cakes, pastries, and baked goods of all shapes, sizes, and flavorful persuasion. I came in prepared however, determined to try a half order each if their beef and turkey sandwiches, and decided to treat myself to some of the sweet baked goods from their extensive sweets section. While I was disappointed by the amount of meat on my sandwiches, I marveled at the flavor and textural cohesion unified in the simple sandwiches. What looks like a basic veggie-mayo-meat quickly becomes a homey culinary experience with the light and fluffy yet hearty sheepherder bread. Where you might expect an overwhelming mouthful of veg (thanks to the substantial sprouts), I'm met with a cohesive bite of delicate fresh flavors that meld together in a delightful sandwich. Safe to say, this is a sandwich sandwich. Not something stacked between bread, but a thoughtful creation that is greater than the sum of its parts. A true sandwich. The complimentary pickle spears and cookie that comes with your sandwich order is a perfect pairing, and I'd highly recommend these sandwiches if youve never tried them! I also got the Apple fritter, grandma cinnamon roll, old fashioned bar, and the apple strudel thing for my desserts to try (not at once). Each had a lovely texture. I disapprove of donuts that don't retain their moisture and texture, but Schats delivers on both marks especially for their old fashioned and Apple fritter donuts which retain a moist fluffy interior with the right amount of crisp. They are also not too heavy, a high mark in my book. The cinnamon roll was delightful with just the right amount of cinnamon and walnuts, the apple strudel thing was mildly disappointing however as the dough was overly dense and difficult to cut/bite into without squeezing out all the filling. Service: Schats staff are friendly, but this is an in and out institution. With the reputation it has, it's no surprise that things are structured to move quickly as there are a constant stream of customers flowing. Even so, staff are happy to answer questions and chat if they have a moment! They made me feel welcome despite being a clear tourist. Ambiance: Schats has a lovely charm to the interior and exterior. It is reminiscent of what I imagine a rustic German/european bakery would look and feel like, and dining at the outdoor seating or perusing the bakeries stacked displays and carts is a wonderfully charming experience. Highly recommend for a fun and lighthearted break that foodies, families, friends will love. Especially as you travel the 395! Overall 5/5 a perfect experience to add onto your 395 itinerary. On our way from Orange County to Mono Lake and Lake Tahoe, we stopped at Erick Schat's Bakkery as Yelp rated it highly. The building with its blue awnings and decor is charming, but the baked goods (loaf cakes, monkey bread, cookies, etc) didn't look appetizing. The majority of the baked goods looked sloppy, oily and unremarkable. The cookies looked dry. The sandwiches didn't look appetizing. There's a refrigerator that has the same sandwiches (boxed and made that day) that you can grab and pay for immediately in lieu of standing in a long line just to order and watch staff put the same kinds of sandwiches together. This bakery has been around for as long as I can remember. As a kid I remember us getting one of their famous sourdough breads but never remember it being so crazy busy. Years later I'm sure it's gotten busier due to the influx of people. It now takes a min to find parking in the small parking lot. The inside is always busy and I find myself pushing through crowds. My favorite is the chili cheese bread. They also have rolls, lots of pastries, drinks and deli sandwiches. There are tables out front to sit at. It's always fun to stop here on our way up or down from Mammoth. They need to expand this location and make it larger to accommodate all the bodies that come thru especially on the weekends it's bumper to bumper traffic in there! For those that are claustrophobic or have health issues probably not the best to come in during peak hours! As for the food everything has been solid thus far. I've tried their sandwiches, breads, and cookies over the years since 1994 and they are all baked fresh out of the oven! They do have a clearance section in the back by the bathrooms for day old stuff or cracked cookies. We have gotten stuff back there and just reheat them with no problems! They do have another indoor/outdoor seating area to the left of the main building if you can't find any space in the main area. If you have pets go across the street to the park and relieve them there with beautiful ducks wading by. I grabbed some heart-shaped dark chocolate cookies on my way down this time and it was a hit with all my friends back home. $22 for a tray kinda steep but well worth it for large unprocessed cookies! read more

Worth the 5 hour drive! I first visited Erick Schat's over 20 years ago when I had moved to Nevada and would drive up the 395 from San Diego. It was a great spot to stop and grab snacks. My sister and I did a small road trip with my son and we wanted to bring him to this bakery. It holds memories for us and we wanted to share those memories with him. The bakery is the same as I remembered. The bread is made fresh and is amazing. I love that they offer samples so you can try different breads throughout the bakery. The cheese bread and the sheepherder's are staples and absolutely fantastic. My new favorite was the cranberry white chocolate. OMG, this bread is heavenly! Make sure you pick up a loaf, it's great with just butter. My son fell in love with the chocolate chip loaf cake, he finished the entire loaf and asked me the next weekend to drive back up to Bishop to get more of the cake. It really was that good. All of the items are wonderful and the staff are great and friendly. This is bakery should be on anyone's list of stops to make when going up or down 395. read more

Wow, what a place -- really impressive. I picked up two donuts and they were excellent. I also bought a loaf of sourdough bread that was incredibly fresh when I got it, and somehow it tasted even better over the next few days. They have so many tempting bakery items that it was hard not to leave with a lot more. The only thing I probably wouldn't buy again was the provolone cheese. The quality didn't seem very good to me -- it was rubbery and didn't really taste like provolone. But their baked goods are definitely where they shine. read more

We camp at Big Pine Creek every year and always make it a point to stop in Bishop and pick up some goodies here. There's a Tesla Supercharger close by on Warren Street, so we usually just walk over while we wait for the car to charge. I usually come during the summer and it's always packed but it actually was not too bad over the weekend. This year's haul included their raisin bread, olive focaccia, stroopwafel and some churros. Everything was delicious! They have all kinds of bread, cheese, pastries, a deli, gelato... pretty much everything you could want! They've also expanded so now you can sit down and eat next door and there's a restroom there too! The staff are always friendly, helpful, and quick even when the line is long. All their bread is magical but I had their rosemary sourdough during my most recent visit and it was just perfect. Every slice was heaven. What an adorable bakery with cute Dutch charm! I was amazed by the WIDE SELECTION of bread types and baked goods, from breads to pastries to loaves to bear claws to cookies. I loved the little Dutch clogs as decor hanging from the ceilings. Their brand advertises themselves as "Home of the Original Sheepherder Bread", so obviously had to try it. Erick's Bakkery was recommended by a friend of my wife. We decided to stop by on the way back from our trip, and so glad that we did! Luckily for us ,it wasn't too crowded as we stopped by Thursday morning, so parking was great and lines were not too long. As soon as you enter, you are greeted with hundreds of packaged sweets and breads, what a paradise to those that love carbs. I ordered a turkey club sandwich and my wife ordered a BLT with avocado. Ofcourse, we also cannot leave without taking a few pastries with us :) My sandwich was delicious and not to heavy, the bread was fluffy, the turkey was thickly carved, the avocado was noticeably present and the tomato and lettuce were a nice touch, one side had mustard and the other mayo.
