Just had a great first timer experience. The freshly baked bread aroma hit me the minute I stepped in. I was greeted by a very friendly woman. We ordered the Muffaletta Sandwich, which was very tasty. We also got a croissant and oatmeal cookie. Both were giant, fresh and delicious. They do not serve espressos but their coffee is very good. They do have cream and a couple of different Torani syrups if you would like some flavoring. We will definitely make this a regular stop as we pass through Independence monthly on our way back and forth to Bridgeport. There is street parking, some tables inside and out and restrooms inside the restaurant behind the counter. I will update this review when we have their breads, pies and other sandwiches. Our two sandwiches were beyond amazingly tasty and the yummiest fresh soft bread! I had a Mt. Tom Turkey on amazing sour dough bread, with the perfect portion of deli turkey, sun dried tomatoes and avocado with a perfect smear of chipotle mayonnaise. Stopped back into Great Basin Bakery on our way home from a road trip. This place is conveniently located in walking distance from the Tesla chargers. We walked in at about lunch time. They were pretty busy, but definitely keeping up. They have a separate section with a few workers dedicated to making the fresh sandwiches. We placed our order and our sandwiches came out in a little under 10 minutes. We had the B.L.A.T. and the Muffeletta. The B.L.A.T. Had perfectly toasted fresh made sourdough with a generous helping of avocado and bacon. The real winner here is the Muffeletta, jam packed with meat and topped with a delicious garlic olive relish. Very average. Not great, not bad at all. Paid $15 for a roast beef sandwich. Thought it was a little pricey. It was decent. Fresh ingredients, okay size. Inside was dirty, had to clean off a table since they were all dirty. The sandwich came out very quick for how busy they were which was nice. Girl that took my order was friendly. I absolutely loooooove this bakery. It's a cute little spot that I stumbled upon looking for breakfast a few years ago. Just now writing a review on it, very long overdue. We drive up pretty often from ventura county so that's a few hours away. This is a MUST pit stop any time I pass by. I've been here way too many times to count. Their bagels are amazingly delicious. Stopped in down the street to charge my car and decided to give Great Basin a chance again to fill the lunch void. This time, left totally happy, the sandwiches are fantastic and the take home sourdough bread made a hell of a trip sandwich for dinner. Our favorite was by far the Muffuletta Sandwich, packed with meat and flavorful as can be. The rest of the family got BLAT's (Bacon, Lettuce, Avocado, Tomato) which were good as well, but the Muffuletta is really the way to go. We got a cookie again this time, the Lemon Butter, and this one seemed way better than last time. Maybe the recipe changed or maybe last time was just a fluke. They have coffee for $2.50 and refills at .95 cents. They also have iced coffee for $4 BUT the absolute standout of this spot is their fresh baked bread loaves! We purchased their garlic sourdough and it is so flavorful, the texture, quality, and softness is the perfect sourdough loaf you'd expect! It seriously beats the "other famous" bakery in town. Great Basin Bakery is a wonderful bakery located in Bishop on the way to the mountains. This spot is super popular and for good reason! They are serving up delicious and fresh and sandwiches. Also they are known for their cookies and fresh baked breads. It's a must stop for a causal breakfast or lunch. This bakery is located downtown and our GPS got us here just fine. We parked on the street and walked quickly across to the bakery. Pro tip is to order ahead online. When we got here there was a line about 10 people deep. We were able to bypass the line and go to the back where their pick up area is, we gave our name and they handed over our sandwiches immediately. There is limited seating inside and it is pretty much a takeout spot. However, if you can snag a seat, there are a few tables, but I would say 90% of the people here were taking the food to go. That's why I would recommend placing an online order for pick up because it just made the whole process really quick and the sandwiches were super fresh, they hadn't been sitting around, etc.. I went with the cold roast beef sandwich, which as simple as it was - it really was delicious. 5/5 stars! The roast beef was generous, and the tomato and lettuce was very fresh. It came with a thick slice of American cheese and the horseradish mayonnaise sauce was phenomenal. I ordered extra horseradish cream sauce on the side and they didn't charge me for it, which was very nice of them. The sandwich was honestly just so well crafted and generous with the portions, that it's a solid sandwich. Prices were pretty reasonable as it was under $19 for a sandwich and some chips. I know you can make sandwiches cheaper at home but sometimes a good deli sandwich is worth the price and the convenience of just coming to picking up. Staff here were very friendly and welcoming. It's a busy spot and a lot is going on but the quality and care by the staff is still 100% there. The inside is a bit outdated, but it more gives a homie old-school vibe. They do have bathrooms in the back and they were clean, so it's great if you need a quick rest stop. Every time I come up to Mammoth, I always make it a point to stop at Erick Schat's down the street. But today, coming home from Mammoth, Erick Schat's was a mad house where you could barely walk through the door. It was so packed that we decided to just leave and find food somewhere else. I then remembered Great Basin Bakery from my past research. Drove down and it was not crowded at all. Walking in, the bakery smelled really good. Decided to order the mushroom brie soup and turkey salad sandwich. Also grabbed a loaf of garlic sourdough bread. It smelled so good and was soft, unlike the ones found at Erick Schats. The turkey sandwich had fresh ingredients and really tasted good. The bread was still soft and chewy. Turkey was moist. The mushroom brie soup was really good. You can really smell the mushroom and if you are a fan of mushroom soup, then this is the one for you. Unfortunately, they only have this on Mondays. Luckily it was Presidents day so we were coming home from Mammoth. It all worked out. My only complaint is that they close at 4pm, which is really early compared to 6pm at Erick Schats. I know they have another location in town, but not sure what time they close. read more

We were able to stop by Great Basin Bakery during our road trip back down from Tahoe. Lovely little bakery and not as crowded as the other bakery in town that was recommended to stop in Bishop. Staff were friendly. I bought the roasted garlic sourdough loaf to take home. It was soft and flavorful. We ordered 2 bagels for lunch. Lox and capers with cream cheese on an everything bagel and then a jalapeño cheese bagel with cream cheese. They were very generous with the cream cheese and their bagels had great texture. I also got an iced coffee, pretty standard. I wish they had more options for drinks. Restrooms were clean which is a plus. read more

Just stopped in to grab a molasses cookie, ending up getting chocolate chip, lemon butter, oatmeal raisin, peanut butter, and two molasses cookies for all of us to sample each kind. Had the turkey Swiss add bacon sandwich which is not on the menu. $14 for a reg sized sandwich. It was good and the sourdough bread was soft and fresh. I then discovered they had a Asiago garlic bread which was not offered for the sandwich bread. When I asked the clerk why she didn't offer me that bread for my sandwich she had no reasoning. I told her they should list the choices of bread on the main menu board so customers know their options. I then proceeded to purchase a jalapeño cheddar bagel and brownie bites. Nothing had prices so I had to ask and the clerk didn't know the pricing either unless she looked it up on the register. The brownie bites were very dry and no packaging date listed on the package. They need to rotate the baked items. I wasn't very impressed with this place. The cheddar jalapeño bagel was good and I would give the sandwich a 7 out of 10 stars. You need to list prices of baked goods and list the types of breads available for sandwiches as the staff do not know what to offer or the prices and rotate your baked goods. read more

Our favorite hole in the wall bakery we love to stop at on our way to or from Mammoth to pick up some bread. Sometimes we get their assortment of tasty cookies, but the garlic sourdough bread is a MUST. We take it home to make pastrami sandwiches. I only knew to check this place out because a couple of rock climbing friends said this was a competitor to the famous Erick Schat's so why not. In the end, I'm so glad I did because I love this place! It's much smaller, less busy, and has less products than Erick Schat's but what they sell IS amazing and delicious. They have basic breakfast options on bagels or croissants. Sausage, egg, cheese options. Next time I need to get myself a sausage, egg and cheese croissant. Friends got it and looks delicious. Pre cut in half too! There is a large variety of bagel options and there's smoked salmon, lox spread and cream cheese options. There's freshly baked bread as a whole or slice. They even have a self slicer and toaster to use! There's even cookies and hot sauces and honeys. There were also delicious looking little pies like apple, pumpkin. Looks super cute and rustic! Both of our sandwiches were pre-cut in half! Makes it easier to eat and split and take pics of the cross sections! BLAT (with provolone added; bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato, mayo). Bacon was perfectly crispy and toppings were fresh. There was the perfect amount of mayo so that it's not dry. Choice of bread included French, sour dough or multi grain. Bread is soft.. Muffeletta (ham, salami, provolone, garlic relish, lettuce). The garlic relish was an interesting tart taste and refreshing. Tasted like a tamponade. Could use a little spice. It comes on a French roll bread that's toasted. Tazo chai was chai tea with half and half to give it a delicious chai creamy drink. It was perfectly sweetened. I liked it! I asked for less ice on my tazo chai drink and they still filled my cup up! Thank you!!! Pros: -Service is friendly!! People are nice! -Food is good! Breads are soft and freshly made. -Fast service. -Self service water with cups. -Self service milk for the coffee, sugar packets include the brown sugar and napkins. -Self service bread slicer and toaster machine next to the breads. -Hot sauce for the sandwiches. -Accepts credit cards including AMEX. -Women and men restrooms with two stalls each are clean and spacious! They're located behind a hallway past the kitchen. There are toilet seat covers. Cons: -Their coffees taste just okay. Nothing special for black or iced and no variety. I would visit a coffee shop for that. -Very little seating area so it's hit or miss during rush hour but I wouldn't put it against them. Tip: Is there a parking lot? Before I leave an HONEST review of GBB I would like to come clean. My daughter has become friends with the owners daughter, becoming roommates in college. We wanted to visit and support the business because above all else the owners are genuinely good people. So, here it goes. The bakery is a little hard to find. It's not on the main blvd. It's situated down a small street, with a small "storefront" wall facing the street. You will see it though because there will be people coming and going. It's a popular place. We went in on our way to a weekend in Lee Vining. We purchased scones, sourdough bread and coffee cake. The scones were fantastic! Great taste and texture. With a cup of coffee, they were to die for. The bread was really good but not sour enough for my tastebuds. We took the coffee cake with us to Lee Vining and enjoyed it all weekend. It stayed fresh and tasted wonderful our entire stay. The service was quick and friendly. We asked questions on the employees and they were very knowledgeable of the product. On our way back home, we decided to buy a couple of sandwiches and 1 to 2 person pies. The sandwiches were good but not out of this world. However, what I liked about them was the fact they were LOADED with meat! Believe me when I say that you will NOT be hungry after you eat one of their sandwiches. And they weren't overpriced! Matter of fact, they were cheaper than what I believed they would be anywhere else. You can't go wrong eating lunch there. The pies we tried when we got home. Blueberry and apple. Absolutely tasty!!!! The best little pies I've ever had. Money well spent. I would recommend trying everything/anything GBB makes. It will no doubt be good, perhaps even exceptional. The food is great, I'll never say anything about it. I'm a local and I'm always so disappointed with how bad the customer service is. Every time I'm ordering the two ladies behind the counter always makes me feel dumb. I've never gone somewhere with customer service as bad as theirs. I always feel like crying every time I'm done ordering. Most of the time they're out of what I want to get but then I see others with it! I rolled my eyes at on of the cashiers one time after she was being plain rude, and she tried to tell my family about it!! Yes, she tried to get me in trouble when she was being a mean person.
