I don't know if I had some sort of super high expectation for this particular restaurant, but when it came so heavily recommended to us by friends that we bowl in a Bowling League with, and them telling us how many years it has been that they've been patron to this restaurant, I think I was expecting something much much more. I can't say exactly what I was expecting, but I just expected better. The food was OK. It wasn't anything special. One of our friends who has been a patron to this restaurant for several decades now, when we asked what food items were good, they said everything. No. That is not true. I had a very basic breakfast and while it was just that, basic. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak. I believe it was. It was not good. It was overcooked. The gravy was extra oily and tasteless. One thing that did make me happy was the fact that they had apple jelly. That is not something you find just everywhere. I feel a lot of the old-school diners order the Heinz jellies and that's when you will find them. We were one large group eating together, but we're made of two families. We split the bill in three. That was no problem. Natasha was able to do that pretty easily. I have a feeling she's got the hang of it. We were finishing up our meal closer to their closing time. So we were being rushed out and kind of hustled along. But still, when my food came out and it was rather cold, and my toast came out and was slightly burnt, I didn't complain. I didn't wanna cause a fuss. I just ate it and did the only thing that I could, go someplace later to eat. I ordered an Arnold Palmer to drink. It did not come till much much later. I asked for a refill and I kind of got some attitude thrown at me instead. I stopped asking for anything else. We settled our portion of the bill and decided to go down the road to Schatt's Bakery. That was the better decision. Parking is available in a small lot just behind the restaurant as well as along the street. During the time that we were in town, there was a lot of construction going on. There was no parking along the sidewalk at that time. I'm sure by now it must be done and completed. If you do not leave the parking lot by a certain time, you can guarantee that they will lock the lot with their chains and locks. You will have to wait till the next morning or you will have to try and figure out how to get your car out some other way.

Super delicious! We stopped here on the way to Mammoth and left happy and FULL! I ordered the eggs Benedict which was so tasty. The eggs and avocado i ordered on the side were fresh and yummy. My daughter who is quite the picky eater had a pancake and she loved it! She at almost the entire thing and they were nice enough to give her some whipped cream on the side! The merch area was pretty cool. Hoodies for $25 is definitely a deal! Unfortunately they didn't have many in stock including my size which was the only thing that was unfortunate for me. The restaurant is super fun with lots of fishing decor. The staff was also super kind and friendly! We love Jack's!

Chocolate chip cookie best one in all of bishop

The food was awesome. Coffee was great. Had a piece of apple pie for breakfast with a combo meal. Service was fast friendly and the people were nice. Cool place to eat at. Ambiance was nice. GET THE COOKIES AT THE COUNTER WHEN YOU LEAVE. Best cookies in town. Great Basin bakery cookies were ok. Better than scaht's too. The pie here was the best as well.

Griddle combo (2 eggs & waffle)

Stopped by Bishop for breakfast on the way back from Mammoth. Jack's restaurant had a very local diner vibe. My boyfriend likes the waffles here so I wanted to give it a try and it did not disappoint! It's an American style waffle so they are thinner and crispier than a Belgium. The texture was great and I heard they even use a home made batter! I also wanted some protein so I ordered one of the griddle combos that included eggs with the waffles. The strawberry and cream waffle was also delicious and not too sweet ! it tasted more natural versus artificially sweetened. Our server, Josh, was very tentative and had recommended the strawberry waffle. He came back to check if he needed any additional sauces as well as coffee/water refills. Service was prompt and the food came out quickly! Which was great since we had a long drive home.

Yes, this is our regular stop now. This trip I had the bacon and cheddar omelette it was tasty and plentiful. I took half with us. On the way home stopped again I had the hot turkey sandwich...no frills but tasty turkey, gravy, and mashed potatoes!

Great local diner with a below average chicken fried steak. I was excited to try it since it was one of their signatures but I was pretty disappointed. This breakfast combo started with biscuit and gravy that blew me away. The biscuits were pillowy soft and moist and the gravy was perfectly seasoned with a meaty, peppery flavor. One of the best biscuits and gravy I've had (9/10) The chicken fried steak was a let down mainly because of the texture of the steak. It was a very tough, stringy, almost rubbery meat patty under the batter. They used a unique fried egg as a batter which was well seasoned and fried well. Their sunny side up eggs were great and has browns were crisped perfectly but I couldn't finish the rest of the steak. I would recommend using any other cut of steak or even a traditional 80/20 ground beef as a patty or a differently sourced patty. This patty had bits of veins and tendons that gave it an almost elastic texture that made it hard to chew. (4/10) The Orange juice was freshly pressed and pulped with bits of orange meat inside. I would get it again. (9/10)

Passing by Bishop California on our way to Lake Tahoe made us feel starved with the nothingness of the desert and cacti, alike. So, we stopped by Bishop to check out their goodies and foodies and Yelp spit out Jack's Restaurant and Bakery on Main Street! It's a small town with a huge heart, people said hellos and howdys while this cowboy town humbly boasts great food and alluring restaurants. I ordered their famous hamburgers that's original to this restaurant and the server promised that it's their best menu dish that they can be proud of. The meat was tender and aromatic, sweet to the taste and not greasy to the mouth, Wow! With the lettuce, mustard and soft bread, the hamburger was out of his world, I found myself closing my eyes and humming to the sound of food orgasms. Hahahah! This burger was out of this world! My sisters ordered their salad and equally awesome, it was crunchy time ears and yummy to the stomach. My other master ordered the soup cause she just got out of her colitis confinement and her comments were, OMG ...taste like Mom's cooking! To wrap it up, we were offered desserts and the server boasted about their pies! Their pecan pies are wild, creamy, fruity, sweet and they melt in your mouth! Don't it from a doc, drop by and tell me how you find these heavenly goodies, too? So, if you're passing my Bishop and Mamoth, California ... drop by Jack's Restaurant and you might find yourself stopping for more than an hour, on your way to Lake Tahoe! Hahahha!

Our go to for breakfast while passing through Bishop on the way home is Jack's Restaurant which has a great cozy hometown diner experience. The menu is packed with hearty American classics -- fluffy pancakes, perfectly cooked eggs, and generous portions of hash browns and corned beef hash. A favorite of our family is the Chicken Fried Steak and Blueberry Pancakes. The vibe is warm and nostalgic, with fun decor such as Trout, Antlers, Mining Tools, etc. that makes you feel right at home. Locals and visitors alike love it, and it's no surprise why -- good food, friendly staff, and great hospitality.

I've been going through Bishop hundreds of time in my life time... since I was two to now seventy two... and Jack's has been here longer... and this is the first time ever, I stopped to eat here... my wife's side, whose been coming through Bishop as long as me couldn't believe it... in the 60's and 70's my folks would stop in Bishop and pick up sheepherders bread from Schat's Bakery right next door... that's where we stopped religiously... and my go to later when I started my own traditions... but kept that one... until Schat's opened one in Mammoth Lakes... didn't even notice Jack's next door... but now since my brother in law was driving we stopped here for his traditional breakfast... funny, everyone told me to get the waffle with a side of bacon, but he got the veggie omelet with hash browns... I decided on getting their strawberry waffle and a side of soft bacon... if you know me, I am a waffle snob... especially Belgium but these were made just like my mom used to make them... probably on the same waffle iron from the 60's... much thinner... you would think with all the toppings of strawberry's and whip cream it would be a sloppy mess... but the waffle was crisp... the strawberries were not fresh but frozen, just like my mom used to make them... with whip cream... and I sprinkled on the chewy bacon... with a dab of syrup... oh man... I was a little kid again having my mom's strawberry waffles! The décor and the place took me back 60 years, and I loved every minute... after 72 years, I'm going to start a new tradition... going to make sure I stop here for breakfast and relive the days gone by and enjoy Jack's forever and ever!

    Corned beef hash breakfast combo
    Jimmy S.

This is a nice diner to stop at otw to and from mammoth. They're known for their corner beef hash which is something I love to try when available. The staff was very attentive and nice and very quick on the uptake of refilling our water or coffees. The meals came out at a reasonable time. The decor is full of record fish catches in the local area I assume. The corned beef hash breakfast combo was great. The corn beef hash had a nice char and sear with the potatoes and onions in it. The hash browns and eggs were done well and the toast wasn't dry which was excellent. The group also got gravy and that was very good!

We learned about this brunch place from a couple's YouTube channel, and I think we did the right thing to try it out! We had a Chili cheeseburger and the original Sierra sandwich. I was full and had a good time finishing my plate. The staff is welcoming, swift, and organized. The ambiance has a cool diner vibe.

Menu is fairly wide ranging - burgers to steak to salads and more. Limited options for vegetarians. The food was slightly above average and prices were reasonable. We didn't expect foodie quality eats here. You place an order at the counter and food is brought to you. Service was pretty much non existent. Unfortunately, ever since the ownership changed, the experience has gone downhill. The customer service is consistently rude and unwelcoming. It feels like staff are irritated just having to take your order. The food is now overpriced for the quality you get, which is a big change from how it used to be. I stopped going for about a year, but recently decided to give it another chance. I called in an order for myself and my disabled grandfather, who only has one arm. I politely asked multiple times if they could please cut the steak for him and even explained why. They clearly seemed annoyed by the request. When I picked up the food, everything looked rushed and just thrown into the boxes--and the steak was not cut. The rest of the meal was just as disappointing. The taquitos were plain with only cheese on top--no sides like guacamole or sour cream, especially disappointing for the price. The loaded potato wasn't even "loaded," just a plain potato. Between the poor service, lack of care, and declining food quality, this place is nothing like it used to be. It's honestly sad to see something that used to feel welcoming and enjoyable turn into somewhere I now dread going. I wouldn't recommend stopping here anymore. There are better places in town that actually value their customers.

We went with the sampler platter to try a bit of everything, loading up on brisket, tri-tip, and ribs. The meats come out sliced thick, and the rib meat falls right off the bone. The meat was fairly tender with good flavors that are pretty decent for American BBQ in CA. The sauces provided were good as well. For sides, the mac and cheese had a nice baked crust on top, and the potato salad balanced out the meats alongside the square of cornbread (it was kind of dry though). This is a reliable stop if you are craving American BBQ in the area, just keep in mind you're not in the South. The meats are cooked well and the platters will definitely leave you full. Pro Tip: Grab the sampler platter if it's your first time visiting so you can try different meats.
