Took over 40 minutes to place an order because no one came to assist our table...and this is after we asked three different wait staff to help us. We watched multiple tables who came after us place their orders AND get their dishes. Ours was mixed race table but after some time our White friend couldn't help but to think the staff was racist and biased against serving us. The food came quickly after the order was placed yet each of our dishes was bland beyond belief. We used salt, pepper, and the jacks seasoning just to make the range of our orders descent. We couldn't understand how Jacks Special, a chewy and unflavored piece of meat called chicken steak, was their winning dish. If that was the special you can only imagine the rest. Once the check arrived three servers came quickly to refill our water glasses and take our plates and utensils away. Never saw so many staff that day rush to our table. The joint was over half empty. They just wanted us out, even though we just sat there quietly hungry for a meal. It was a terrible experience and no one in our large party will ever return. read more

Had a hard time finding a decent place to eat breakfast at 7 AM in Bishop, CA. We'll, I'm very glad that Jack's was open and ready to serve. I sat at the counter, and my server Sierra totally took care of me. I decided on the Starter Omelet with extra crispy Hash Browns. The omelet was just what I wanted, and the hash browns were perfect. Jack's is one of my favorite places to go for breakfast while passing through or staying in Bishop CA. They have great hamburgers, love the fresh bread for the buns. But I go mainly for their pies. The peach pie is so great it's the first one I will ask for. Their apple is great and their berry pies are awesome. Before I leave Bishop I will always stop and purchase whole pies to take home for me and my friends. While purchasing my pies on my last trip I saw that they started serving chorizo and eggs. I can't wait to try it on my next trip to that area. But for now, I am enjoying my slice of peach pie. read more

I think of this place more like an experience. This is the king of diner type breakfasts, but it's the ambiance, walk hangings and diners who make this place memorable and worth the visit, at least once. The food is standard breakfast fare cooked close to perfection. I thought the floors and bathrooms were super clean considering the foot traffic that comes through here. Waitresses were more efficient than chatty, and brought our food in record speed. No need to ask for napkins, utensils, condiments, or refills because the servers have it down to a science. The food was pretty good and we ate here going into Mammoth and driving back home. I really enjoyed it! Brought some stickers for my kids' water bottles because they loved their pancake combos and wanted to remember their time at this restaurant. Solid 4 stars! Will be coming back! read more

On our way back from Mammoth Lake and read the reviews so we decided to stop. It was a late party of 20 and they were so accommodating, they sat us as closes as possible and the staff was so friendly. I tried the biscuits and gravy which was yummy and my friend got the chicken fried steak and he was very pleased with it. It was packed so I assumed the food would be fresh and delicious. Unfortunately I was mistaken. I ordered the French Toast (pretty basic) and it was two incredibly dry slices of bread. After drowning it in watered down syrup, it was still DRY with a fishy aftertaste. Cute little decorations, I'll give you that. But food tasted like microwaved food. I have been coming to Jack's since I was 18 years old. 53 years later, the food is still great, and the service is excellent. The coffee is a local brew that makes getting up in the morning worthwhile. The biscuits and gravy are so good your grandmother will be envious. The omelets are cooked perfectly so the eggs are soft and full of flavor with a large amount of cheese and sasauge. Don't miss the warm muffins versus toast. Very good. The atmosphere is all about Bishop fishing with many antiques and huge mounted fish on the walls. Service is excellent. My family and I were headed back from Mammoth and searched for a legit breakfast restaurant. Legit meaning good ole American breakfast plates. I've been to a couple of other spots in Bishop and was underwhelmed. Despite the low rating (I usually don't trust the stars), I looked at the menu and photos. The choices were what I was looking for. We had the French toast. It was SPECTACULAR. My husband who's from Italy is so dang picky and he LOVED it. We also had two kids pancake combos. I had the chicken fried steak and biscuits and gravy. I lived in Kansas in college and miss those items, not many places have that menu selection. The gravy, hash browns, eggs, and biscuit were incredible. The fresh squeezed OJ was pretty sour. The meat was a bit chewy in some parts but still DELICIOUS. I ate it all. The service was friendly and kind. Everyone was real and aware. It was packed when we arrived but sat down pretty fast. We got our food within 10-15 minutes of ordering. I was afraid the service would be like Mammoth; super extra slow like molasses. But whew! They have a tight operation without all the stressful vibes. The customers were pretty attentive, too. They didn't just linger around after finishing. They seemed courteous when it came to others and respect for Jack's. To top it off, I'm OCD. So, I expected the bathrooms to be absolutely disgusting with the amount of people and being a diner. BUT... it was clean! I'm impressed. It says a lot about how they take care of what they have. I sat at the table after we paid and my family left for a box so I could take the rest and not appear rude to my mother-in-law who just paid over $120 for a Denny's quality breakfast. Some of the staff regret their life choices and it shows. i.e. looking like they've been dragged through a thousand miles of bad road, or absolutely hating people and wondering why they're there in the first place. I come here almost every time I go to Bishop or Mammoth and the quality keeps going down hill. I'm done. The last few times I've been here I've encountered some rude, miserable human being. Hollandaise sauce should not taste like melted butter btw. The only reason for the extra star is because of the hot sauce. No one in my party wants to come here anymore after 10 years. The chicken fried steak is authentic and yummy (needs a little salt) but it's the real deal, not something they pulled out of the freezer. My ham & cheese omelette was perfect. Highly recommend!! This was such a great breakfast place with fantastic service. Our server, Karen, was splendid. She treated my family well and made the experience a fun one. I am a Corned Beef Hash expert and let me tell you, this was one of the best I have eaten! Like it says on the menu "If you like it out of the can, this dish isn't for you!". Long rumored the best breakfast in town, I had yet to try on the many occasions I come to Bishop. Wanting to eat before the trip back home, I was able to get here early and really enjoyed it. Great coffee shop serving breakfast and lunch. Basic breakfast food with good coffee and an excellent staff. It's kinda a hang up for me but I always ask for well done hash browns and yet I never get them. For the first time in recent memory, I got them how I like. Ordered a Denver omelette with the afore mentioned hash browns and biscuit & gravy in lieu of toast. Very good, the gravy was excellent. Also ordered was a hash scramble which was also said to be good. It is where locals go and it is the best in town, easily. Cute coffee shop with lots of seating, but it does fill up fast. Cool decor with replicas of some of the largest fish in this area. I couldn't have been more satisfied and that includes the check which seemed very reasonable. The first of many visits here. What a cute place lots to look at! Being a family of 12 can be challenging to keep up with but let's first start off with the inside: I love how it has an old Fashion look to it. Lots to see in there and it was very tidy! The waiter: He was very nice and was able to handle our 2 tables. He didn't miss anything from our order and was always coming to check on us. The food: I ordered an extra crispy waffle per my request I was expecting a thick waffle but it was thin and crispy and was very good. Broccoli soup I also ordered and it's was ok , my 2 sons had the chicken fried and unfortunately they weren't pleased with it at all, my step dad had it also and said it was ok so I guess it's a hit and miss kinda meal, my mom got the ham steak and it was really good and big portion, my 2 daughters had pancakes they were good size portion and taste good, my husband had the grilled chicken breast sandwich and was very pleased with it . Karen was our server and she was a complete delight. Hot coffee was kept coming and entrees we're timely and served hot. I enjoyed the pork chop combo while hubby had the ham steak breakfast - both were delicious! I've been coming here for years, and it was always great. Food was always good, the muffins were always served warm...unfortunately there's been a decline in food quality, not sure if ownership changed or cooks did, but it just hasn't been the same post covid. Has anyone else noticed this? It pains me to review Jacks because this place has been our go to place for years on our annual vacation up to the Eastern Sierras. It's like telling that gentle grandfather figure that nurtured you throughout your childhood that he smells and his stories suck. However, this past weekend we went there and my brother got sick eating the country fried chicken...he noticed it was a little undercooked in the middle, which he left untouched but it was too late. Hours later he felt sick and he threw up. The only reason I gave it two stars is for the past memories I still hold onto tightly and since the service is still good. This is an intervention, get it together Jacks...for now we'll be looking at other options. read more

Wow! From host to service to food, just what we hoped for. First off, my husband is from Texas and I'm an okie who makes the best chicken fried steak and milk gravy. So we're always worried about getting it in a restaurant. He always asks first, if it's hand made or premade frozen. Well this is handmade, and really good meat, and the gravy might have even been as good as mine. Seriously, maybe it was, and I'm ok with that. Tried to call in an order to go- phone number not working 3 days in a row and when I went into order and called to their attention, it was clear the phone had been taken off the hook. No , thank you or we'll look into that, he just rushed to take my order. Ordered diced ham and scrambled eggs X 2 w cheese. No cheese on the eggs and we paid for it. Couldn't call for a refund, so just won't go back. If you'd like your toast or muffin properly buttered order extra butter. Visited 8/22/2019 A 3 1/2 Star place for sure. I've only tried Breakfast here but it was good. The Omelettes are very good and the hash brown potatoes also are very tasty. The Chicken Fried Steak was a bit chewy but had good flavor. I had a Chocolate Shake with my Omelette. It was very large but could have used more chocolate. Yesterday my husband and I went to Jacks to grab a quick lunch on our break from work. It was 1:50pm. We were seated and brought some drinks. Our waitress came to our table at about 1:55 and asked us if we needed more time. We said no and ordered. After placing our order I asked my husband what time they closed and we then realized that they closed at 2. At no time did we ever feel unwelcome or hurried to order or finish our lunch. We had no idea that they closed at 2 and would not have arrived so close to closing had we known that. But... they never made us feel unwelcome and they provided us with the same service that we have gotten every other time we have been there. This place is a class act. They understand how important it is to treat every customer that comes in the door with the same level of service and respect. The food is good. The customer service is outstanding. read more
