Really good and attentive service. It seems it's a very popular place as it was really crowded. I had the chicken fried steak, it was a good portion for the size. It was decent but I can't quite make what it was but it didn't fully convince me. The seasoning salt they offer though did the trick. Pancakes were really good though. Visited on 02/19/2022. We stumbled into this place on our way to Reno. Parking was a bit of a hustle but well worth it. We went in and were promptly greeted by the hostess and did not have to wait, even tho the place was booming with patrons. After we were seated, we were asked by several staff members if we had been helped, which was quite surprising since the place was full, they had time to attend to you and made sure we were acknowledged. Our server was friendly and nice. Our food arrived extremely quickly which again, it was great since the place was busy. The portions were satisfying and very delicious. I had the french toast and I must say it was one of the best french toast I had in a while. The orange juice was also freshly squeezed. The place looked clean and we were not required to wear masks. The price was also moderate for the great food. Overall our experience was great and I would strongly recommend this place for breakfast. read more

My favorite diner feature: The Coffee is served while you're seated, before you even have a menu in-hand. They know what the morning is about! It's a proper diner, complete with sarcastic signs on the wall, and house-label Jalapeno and Habanero sauces. Portions were solid, and prices were around $10-$12 for lunch. The chicken-fried steak (not sorry) was the real deal, unabashedly served under gravy and next to hash browns. The baked muffins are huge. Nobody left hungry. Service seemed a bit understaffed and busy. Sadly, my early coffee mug sat cold and empty until the end. The BLT came out quite a bit later than the more complicated stuff. I don't know if we accidentally joined the whiny hour but wow.. people around us seemed to be complaining about everything.. too little butter on the toast, bacon under cooked (replaced), food "just okay..".. Egad.. Seemed like almost a willful test of patience for our server -- bless her heart, she took it all in stride. Plenty of seating. Long menu of burgers, sandwiches, breakfast.. all of it. This was terrible. Not sure what's happened here, we ordered burgers and onion rings and they look nothing like the photos posted here. The lettuce was old and brown, the tomatoes mushy and not fit to serve, the burger patties looked like frozen Costco patties that weren't seasoned. Buns were just ok, not like others have had in the past. My hubby got a tuna melt... they took the tuna salad and put it directly on the griddle because it was burnt. Burnt tuna salad. Who does that?!? My niece got a corn dog. It was cracked open and the wiener was burnt. I've pictures of peoples pie with mold.. I didn't order the pie, but I did notice the dates on the pies in the cooler were over 2 weeks old. I've included a picture taken 8/21/20 and pies labeled 8/7/20. They were untouched... if I were them I'd stop making pies. Maybe COVID has caused them to start cutting costs. But zero excuse for serving old produce, grilling tuna salad directly on the griddle. I stopped in Bishop on the 4th of July. It was a Sunday morning and surprisingly Jack's was not very busy at all. They seemed to be well staffed and the service was nice enough. I would give the front of the house 3 stars if i could rate them separately. My issue was with the food. The menu only listed one "house specialty", my favorite, the Chicken Fried Steak. Of coarse if the menu only lists one house specialty it is going to be good right? Apparently not. The plate arrived in good timing. The hashbrowns and eggs were cooked perfectly but the steak had all kinds of issues. 1. The gravy was riddled with doughy lumps the size of peanut M&Ms and it was not seasoned well. 2. The Steak was a cheap round steak which is normal but the cook had not tenderized it in any way. The steak should have been pounded or cubed before it was cooked. As a result It was tough, chewy, and in desperate need of seasoning. 3. The breading was not crispy at all. It didn't stick to the Steak and was more of a porridge consistency. It was gross. My suggestion for the owners is this, If your going to list one item as your "house specialty" you should make sure your kitchen knows how to cook it correctly. This was an epic fail and it's the owners fault. Please care about the quality of food your kitchen sends out. read more

Tried this place twice with a group of friends - Pancakes & French toast is a must have! Gravy&biscuit - weird not having sausage in the gravy and its very bland, lacks seasonings in the gravy Chicken fried steak - enjoyed it! Being served - It is very busy and the servers try to get your food to you in a timely manner but its very disturbing to see your plate of food under someone elses plate of food to have gravy on their plate and a plate engraved in your food. Typical american diner with american food. It has alot of Bishop history and fishing plaques mounted the wall. I came here for breakfast before heading up to mammoth. The food was good enough portion, flavor was average. Once you apply the Jack's Habanero sauce...it's a different story. I would come back and buy 2 bottles of this sauce. We were headed home from Mammoth Mountain and looked on Yelp for a nice breakfast/brunch to eat at and we were starving. After looking on Yelp, there were a ton of restaurants that only offered sandwich type of breakfasts, and not the typical pancake and waffle menu we were craving. Jack's restaurant and bakery had a lot of great reviews and wonderful pictures of their food items. And to think that we were going to stop by Denny's is an understatement after our experience today. The restaurant is decorated so old school like a country store with fishing decor. Our waitress Patricia was very kind and took care of us. My spouse and I both ordered the same meal: scrambled eggs, cinnamon French toast and bacon. It was very delicious. The coffee was the best and hubs ordered a slice of banana cream pie and he said it was the best. The flaky crust with shaved almonds, and whipped cream was phenomenal! Patricia mentioned that the peach pie was her favorite, so we ordered one to go. We will return ! Don't go to Denny's, come here and get better service and food for the same price! This place is a solid 4 but I gave an extra star for two reasons. First, breakfast is served all day. Definitely need that when you're on vacation and don't want to get up early and/or when you're planning to stop on your way down from Mammoth. There's not very many restaurants that offer good food in town, just be ready for a wait if it's a busy day. Also when busy, they are not that great on customer service, they tend to forget that they have seated people down.. and then you're waiting for a solid 20 mins before your waiter comes over. Onto the food, it all depends on what you order.. some food is bland with no flavor, and other items are very tasty. I haven't had an issue, however the last time I was their was with the bf. He ordered biscuits and gravy, said the biscuit was very dry and that the gravy didn't help it, lack of flavor. Otherwise I see it as a good spot for a quick bite to eat. Nothing fancy, inside is like a Mimi's or Cocos at best. Great little place in Bishop. I travel pretty frequently, so when I want a good early meal, this is the spot, ESPECIALLY breakfast. (Although ALL food is great, ALL the time!!) I've enjoyed Jack's for over 15 years now. Mimosas, mimosas, mimosas!!! This is a plus, they're aren't too many breakfast options, I think maybe 1, maybe 2 other places open at 7 or 8 am for breakfast. But Jacks is, and I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it contributes heavily to their overall success. They are ALWAYS busy, and filled with hungry, adventure seeking patrons, so that is definitely a good sign, am I right? Jack's has been around for years. They have merchandise for sale, and their menu is straight to the point, and perfectly diverse for their type of cuisine. They also have mimosas for the morning dRiNkeR (did I mention mimosas?). Kim is a waitress who's been there for a while, and she's nothing short of excellent. Not to discount the rest of the waitstaff, though, because they ALL rock. This last time I went, I had the eggs benedict. just FABO. The portions are perfect size, and the price is right. I've had other meals also, and they're ALL good. I can tell they use quality ingredients and do NOT cut corners. One thing that I noticed, that I haven't seen at any other restaurant, is that their menus are on the table, under an acrylic table cover. I just think that's is sheer brilliance! hahaha! Friend referred us to this place. They must have found a malnourished deprived old cow to give me such a thin stupid looking steak like that. Slightly cold mashed potatoes with a few hard chunks and used my fork to finish smashing them down. Cole slaw was tiny but decent. Toss in some water and a few vegies in a tiny bowl and taa daa ... there's your so-called Barley soup...yuck. Now there is a bright side to this....the nice fresh bread roll drenched in butter.
