Meh. Friendly folks. Average (at best) Mexican restaurant fare. Less than attentive service. There were only 3 other diners in the place. I ordered a beer when we sat down and would've ordered another had I been asked. But, no one checked with us after our orders were delivered. Prices are a bit high but not excessive. Not sure why people are leaving 5 star reviews. Came here for dinner, had the carne asada taco combo plate with rice and beans and the nacho fries with carnitas. The asada meat was fatty and dry, also the tacos were on a regular sized corn tortilla. I would consider authentic tacos to be on small tortillas with moist and flavorful meat. This meat was neither moist nor flavorful and was WAY over priced. The only good thing here was their cilantro salsa. If you want some amazing tacos for WAY less, check out the Guadalajara Tacos in Bishop instead, don't spend your money here. read more

The last time we were in El Ranchito I said I wouldn't come back. I'm not a crazy clean freak but this place is just gross. Food on the menus and the salsa jars have crusty salsa all over them from the previous tables. Then I had to use the restroom. No soap! In either bathroom. Employee bathroom as well. Then we went back last week unfortunately. Still gross. Bus tubs full of dishes on a rack by the front door and we were the only table. Dirty menus. With the food not tasting fresh or of high quality ingredients I'm just glad no one in our party got sick. Seems like the kind of place that it would only be a matter of time. All of their delicacies are completely homemade, fresh, and HEALTHY!!! Stopped in on our way back from Mammoth. Didn't know what to expect but we were not disappointed. The gentleman who took our order was super nice and let us try some of their beans so we could decide which ones to order. They were great! I had two item combo, carnitas taco and tamale. I had the chili verde it was very good it had a kind of a sweet taste like it was marinated with orange. Chips and spicy salsa is very good also not real spicy. Some people say it's big portions but my chile verde was kind of small. A friend had the tamales and they were good also . They do sell beer but no margaritas. I will eat there again next time I'm in town read more

It was the perfect place to stop on the way back from Mammoth. The service was phenomenal and the food was literally incredible. It's great to see small-town restaurants delivering such great satisfaction. The menu was on fleek - simple, with enough variety to satisfy any needs. Having read all the great reviewes of this place we decided to give it a try. Not sure if something changed in the restaurant management or were just very unlucky, but the dinner was just a big disaster. Pros: - Chips and salsa, we could choose spicy or mild version and it had a really nice taste Cons: - the waiter was not welcoming and not friendly at all - he has thrown the menus on the table, menus were sticky of salsa - food wasn't good; we took enchiladas with beef and chicken and neither of the two was any good - beef had some crunchy pieces, chicken had little taste - while we were still eating they have already started cleaning the floors with some very smelly detergent (it was some 10 min before they were closing) Overall it wasn't good and I would not recommend this place. read more

Love this place and their wide verity of dishes to choose from! Love the fact that they offer "not hot" and "Hot salsa". Ask for both and mix the two together and it's perfect! No kidding the hot is hot! I'm NOT a big fan of the way they prepare huevos rancheros :-/ it's not traditional. The Menudo is perfect!!! I like their chile verde burrito enchilada style, or a nice fresh salad with ranch and mild salsa mixed! They also have milk shakes! My family went one morning after church and got milk shakes and pancakes, eggs, sausage, none of us got Mexican breakfast and it was great !!!! Exceptional freshly prepared Mexican food. Not usually known but the hot plates one gets in many Mexican restaurants is to keep the food warm as it was pulled from warming trays where it has sat for hours and then assembled for each order. With El Ranchito the food is prepared at the time of the order and you can see the chef working. The carne asada is very good and so are the tamales with verde sauce which is a little spicy but with excellent flavor. Their tortillas are freshly made and they almost melt in your mouth. No need for a knife with these dishes. Easily the best enchiladas and tamales I have eaten in many years. Beans are exceptional as is the rice. Lots of flavor and neither had the dried and reheated taste and texture one so often finds at restaurants. I seldom eat the beans as there is little flavor but no so with El Ranchito. The salsa for the chips is either "hot" or "mild" and the hot is not at all spicy. It is OK but it would be below average in heat in most Mexican restaurants in areas with a large Hispanic population. Very good selection of domestic and imported beers along with milk shakes and soft drinks. Waitress was friendly and very attentive which is also unusual as restaurants go. read more

Curious about other reviews. Some folks appear to have had bad experiences, but I've been several times now. The service has always been friendly and prompt and the food is really good. It is close to real Mexican--and I've eaten a bit in various parts of Mexico. The place is a bit, um, rustic, but that adds to the charm. The shrimp burrito is really good and the traditional tacos are just like Mexico. Good selection of popular Mexican beers (which by their nature aren't great, but especially if it's hot and you're eating tacos are pretty hard to beat). read more
