This little gem located on the main strip of downtown Bishop will not disappoint. I was raised on a tradition of La Casita down the road, but this new find has me switching. The prices are good and the food is delicious. They start you off right away with super fresh, still hot, tortilla chips and some fresh salsa with a bit of a kick. The waitress we had on our most recent visit was a bit no-nonsense, but I don't mind curt service as long as I am getting what I want. In fact, I prefer it over that sugar coated phoniness (hate those phonies) that is served up at a lot of places. El Ranchito has all the usual menu items as well as some stuff that is a little more rare (i.e. chiliquiles). They also have a section of burgers and more American style dinner food. I have gone to this place almost exclusively for years but.... UnFortunately I have to get a new favorite Mexican food restaurant here in Bishop. Last night my husband and I decided to go out which we rarely get a chance to do. I have always loved El ranchitos seafood and mechiladas and it sounded like a good choice as it was the day before our anniversary. We arrived around 725 and were immediately asked what drinks we would like. We ordered 2 michladas which is standard to order in this restaurant. The young server went to put in our order and came right back telling us that they don't have glasses and then we have to order something else. And then I asked well can they clean glasses and then we could order the mechiladas? Clearly they are lying that they don't have glasses. They just didn't want to serve a drink. There were two other tables of people and no excuse for why they would have no glassware for any drinks for anyone else that came in the restaurant. The young kid serving us went to the girl behind the counter and she said in an obvious bitchy manner that she's not making any of those drinks tonight. They do not close until 8 o'clock we would've been out of there by then I'm sure but because they simply refuse to make two drinks that we had requested we decided to leave and go somewhere else that appreciates its customers and their business. We are not tourists from out of town we are not some nobody people. We have been going to this restaurant for years and years and unfortunately for us and them I cannot in good conscience return to that business. I will not support A business that treats its customers in such a manner. Unfortunately I'm sure it was not the cook at the counter it was not the server trying to help us it was this very very rude girl who ruined our experience and I don't ever see myself going back there again after this. El Ranchito didn't even exist on Yelp! until now?! Blasphemy! These are the best tortilla chips I have ever had, they are fresh and homemade, and they keep 'em coming. I honestly have thought about them everyday for two weeks now. The chips alone are well worth the trip. I ordered the cheese enchiladas with green sauce. Very good. The sauce was amazing. In fact, all the sauces were amazing. The hot salsa the chips came with was chunky and fresh, obviously homemade. Then, my old man got a burrito and they brought him a trio of sauces with it. All three were excellent, and the verde sauce was different from the verde sauce on my enchilada! And the red sauce that came on his wet burrito was different from the four other sauces on the table as well. So..they have at least 6 different sauces here and they are all excellent. The menu has the usual mexican fare at the usual prices - slightly cheaper, actually. The bean and cheese burrito, which came wet, and was huge, was less than $5. I think my two enchilada combo was around $9. I will absolutely be hitting up El Ranchito every single time I drive through Bishop from now on, and that's a fact! read more

We were staying out north of town on BLM land and were hungry for something besides our own cooking. We chose this place Excellent tamales and rellenos. My boyfriend and I usually camp out in the sierras at Four Jeffrey or Parchers. We stopped here for a quick bite on one of our days in town. He had 4 carne asada tacos and I had the Caldo de Pollo. This was by far the weirdest interaction I've had when trying to obtain service in the middle of COVID. My boyfriend and I were traveling through Bishop on a Saturday and noticed the lack of selection we had when searching for a breakfast options. Eventually, we settled for this local business, with yelp's assistance... after attempting to go to two other places, which were closed. Upon walking in, we were greeted with a stare that let us know we were not welcomed, but we proceeded to approach the counter, where the owner was. He then asked "What do you want?" We asked if we could order breakfast and have a seat, to which he nodded in hesitant approval. We saw that there was a customer sitting in the corner so we assumed Yelp was correct about indoor seating. Less than a second after his approval nod, he calls my bf and I back by saying "Can I ask you a question? Where are you two from?" We told him and he asked if everything was open there. I responded by telling him yes, outdoor seating was available at most places. He said he doesn't believe me, which prompted my bf to respond with "Okay, can we eat here or not?" And he shook his head no, so we left. The entire time, this man stared at me in the most inappropriate and uncomfortable way. We left feeling disgusted and disrespected by his condescending tone. Why not implore us to just order takeout? Why speak to us with such disrespect? We didn't eat there (clearly), so I can't speak to the food's quality, but the hostility alone was enough for me to want to write a Yelp review. Not sure how they have such high ratings all around. EVERYTHING about this place is mediocre. It's not by any means bad & if you have a thing for hot sauces / sauces like me they have you covered on that level. That being said still very much so mediocre. We stopped in for dinner on our way to Tahoe because we had been on the road a while. I didn't want fast food and this place was busy so I imagined it would be good. It was actually the worst Mexican food I've had in California. They were busy and under staffed. I felt bad for the server, although not her fault but she couldn't get our order for about 15 minutes. The food came out fast and because of that looked thrown together and cold. The enchiladas had a red sauce that literally tasted like canned tomato sauce not enchilada sauce at all, there was so much melted cheese that it tasted and smelled like throw up. First impression review. Never been here. Caught the place in transit from Tahoe. Service was slow and the food was below average. I felt the food was packaged ingredients thrown together. My daughter had a hard shell Carne taco and the shell looked like it was over cooked. Wife had chilaquiles and all the ingredients were placed on the dish separately. Man, this place does some stuff really well... But it's lacking in the most important area: the food. Let's start with the good: 1) Complimentary chips and salsa are fresh and delicious. 2) Service is always decent. 3) Their Mexican beer/drink selection is GREAT. The bad: 1) I have two meals that a decent Mexican food place needs to have down: fish tacos and the carne asada burrito. Both were made oddly and as far from authentic as it gets. Quac from a can, microwaved burrito (smothered, can't stand that), taste and textureless tortillas (corn/flour)... Just overall not satisfying. 2) Price. 17.50 for a soda and burrito? Ouch. 3) Menu. There's burgers and fries on there, Italian seafood... A bunch of stuff that ISN'T Mexican food. This is a big let down for me. I want to see what you can make AMAZING and let me pick. Don't try to cater to every picky tard out there. If I'm in a Mexican food place, that better be what's on the menu. And it better rock my face off. read more

We are in town just to pick up our son who did the John Muir Trail and this was just what we all needed - a healthy, tasty breakfast. We a veggie omelette, breakfast burrito, and carne asada. The rule of thumb for authentic Mexican food is follow the local Hispanic crowd and where they go to nosh. That's how one knows this is where to go. I have been coming here for some time as a local and have found it to be the best Mexican food in town. My selections for lunch or dinner are either the two tacos combo or the steak ranchero. His enchiladas had no complaints. Everything was really hot so you know it's been zapped. It's a great place if you want safe food for a good price but hearing a microwave is a bit disappointing. Wasn't expecting a lot more since it was a Thursday 45 min before closing. Staff was great- attentive and nice. He said the menue was outdated and said he was sorry -- but refused to correct the unadvertised price on my bill. Initially I was pretty skeptical about coming here. There was 2 Mexican Restaurants right next to each other.. And I'm pretty picking coming from San Diego Mexican food. ..I was actually was craving a prime rib sandwich from the cart I saw down the road. But I was willing and accepted to join 2 Mexican buddies than enjoyed the food here as well. My review is based on what ordered. Can't really speak on the other food, aside from the fact my buddies liked what they ordered (burrito, tacos, shrimp cocktail). I ordered the "Adovado Steak Sandwich" which I initially thought said avocado. So I added it anyway. It turned out really good. Marinated with a diff flavor and sat well on the sourdough that was toasted and gave it a added taste. Place was bright, service was there. The decorations were busy. Food was very good. Fast, friendly service. We had three different dishes. The California burrito. Very large, very good, they don't slack on the meat. The cheese enchiladas were average, Spanish rice was flavorful. Two of us got the whole beans and they were a little under seasoned. I had the combo plate with a tamale, pork which was very good. Not too much masa like some places, and the chicken enchilada which could have used a little more sauce. Loved the chips (homemade) and the salsa. read more
