Mexican Sugar Las Colinas is a Mexican restaurant in Irving that has become a great place if you're…read morelooking for a patio, happy hour, or legit good eats. There are so many Mexican\Tex Mex restaurants in North Texas and Mexican Sugar continues to impress. My Overall Rating - 4 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - I love the atmosphere at Mexican Sugar. The restaurant itself reminds me of Mexico inside and out, and the different types of seating (communal, patio, traditional, cool) will give you plenty of options. But in the evening, when Happy Hour begins Mexican Sugar will fill up with tons of patrons and good energy. 1 Star. Service - The service has always been good on my multiple visits. This is a Mexican restaurant, and the staff know the menu very well. If you're not sure how something is pronounced or tastes, just ask! 1 Star. Food - There's brunch on the weekends and traditional Mexican dishes (tacos, enchiladas). On my visit on a holiday, I went with brunch and the Barbacoa Chilaquiles. This is a traditional Mexican breakfast where tender barbacoa is layered on tortilla chips along with a sunny side up egg. The result is a fantastic combination of flavors, texture, and heat. Yes, it's a slow burn, and those of you who like spice will love it. I had to finish it off with a Mexican Flan as a perfect way to cool my mouth. 1 Star. Will I Return? - Yes. Honestly, I don't know why Mexican Sugar is not in my rotation of places in Irving. It hits every mark and I've never been disappointed. Yes. I'll be back. 1 Star.

When we asked the manager about it, he didn't seem to know they changed this. 10/25/25 was 8.25% tax (including alcohol in the order). All recent bills were anywhere from 13% to 16.5% hidden in the "tax" line, not even itemized. I'm sure because they know most won't realize it. This may explain why on a Friday at 5pm (even with a social hour) the bar was empty except for one other couple. Not going to reduce the stars since I like many of the long-timers that work here, but whoever is running the show now should probably re-examine their decisions. #WWFD

We sat at the bar on a Friday afternoon and were greeted by a great bartender named Edgar. He gave us a few recommendations, so we thought we'd go with his suggestions. So happy we listened! The sea bass enchiladas with charbroiled shrimp were fantastic! I absolutely wasn't expecting the depth of flavors. It was an amazing dish for sure. The charbroiled filet mignon was the star of the show however. We were not expecting such a great steak at a Mexican restaurant. The table side charring was perfect! Charred to a perfect medium rare with the right amount of seasonings. If we're ever in Dallas/Irving area...we'd definitely return! Well done.

Their decor is interesting, the drinks are delicious and strong and their menu is almost entirely gluten-free. I have Celiac Disease and this is one of the only local restaurants that I look forward to eating at. They seem to have unfortunately changed up their menu and eliminated the taco plates. They used to have amazing brisket tacos. Now, their food is really expensive and there are no tacos. They seem to have transitioned to a steakhouse menu. We visited on National Margarita Day so they had some drink specials. We sat on the outdoor patio, not realizing that none of the patio heaters had fuel tanks. Service was okay but we did have to go inside a couple of times to ask for stuff since nobody else was outside (pretty empty inside too). Please bring back your tacos!

Lol But I also want to support this small restaurant and brag about literally how delicious everything is. From the empanadas that are cheesy and meaty you could eat as a meal alone, to all the flavors of each sauce they offer is exceptional. The poblano sauce is so good, I'd like to get a job in the kitchen for the recipe. We also asked for a side of the mole sauce just to try, it was smoky, sweet, and the right amount of spices. The tacos remind me of the tacos I get in Mexico with the grilled pineapple and picked onions. The salsa offered with the chips is warm and I love that. Will definitely be a go to restaurant for me. Thank you for the delicious meal.

The inside reminds me of most of the Tex-Mex themed restaurants in Dallas. The FESTIVE colors, chairs & booth seating, bar photos on the wall. Service to the table was nothing exceptional. After scanning the menu, I ordered the trio fajita which is steak, chicken, and shrimp. I wanted to be able to pick my meat combo. I really just wanted the Chicken and Shrimp. Luckily, the Mister was able to eat the beef. They came sizzling! The Chicken was tender and the marinade was not over-powering. The shrimp was cooked but very fishy. I squeezed fresh lemon on it and it pulled out the intended flavor. I was not particularly awed with garnishments. I wanted shredded lettuce and maybe my choice of beans black or pinto. Nonetheless, the overall plate was good and I RECOMMEND for anyone looking for a high protein meal. The chips and dip came out first with both salsa and a bean dip. LOVED the bean dip as a counter to the spicy salsa. They did not have queso blanco but I know this is mostly a lower Mexico to central-America staple.

For brunch, though, starting with mimosas is usually a good choice. Here they use fresh squeezed orange juice, so the taste is good. I had read the negative reviews for this place stating that wait times and confusions with orders were the common gripes. And we saw why. There were a couple of items we had to ask for more than once before finally getting - and our orders did really take quite some time to come out. The time here dragged, even sitting at the bar because the service was slow. And the bar is usually the place for fast service. The food wasn't bad - I had the eggs and enchiladas brunch plate - and funny enough, this was the first time I found myself liking the potatoes more than the refried beans, both of which are common sides for this type of food. The potatoes were done right, while the beans had some sort of weird spice to it. The enchiladas were good, but if you order the plate with cheese enchiladas to keep it meatless, be warned that the sauce is still a chili con carne. The grilled portobello tacos were a bit on the dry side, funny enough, and the sides of green beans and spaghetti squash were better, also funny. This was probably my first and last time coming here, as it just wasn't to my taste. But come on down and see for yourself if you are in the area.

Our cocktails were all good - and the appetizers were very good. We had the crispy pork belly and the tostaditas with barbacoa. The crispy pork belly was especially delicious and I would order as my own dinner in the future. It comes with onions and sauces and corn tortillas and it's to die for - so crispy and flavorful. We ordered the Bistec enchiladas and they were good but not as good as the appetizers. They give you a variety of sauces when you're seated that you keep throughout the meal - from mild to spicy but I would say the "spicy" is on the mild side. Still good and flavorful but not unapproachable for most ppl. We had the Campechana dessert and it was a little strange. It was basically a vanilla Icecream cake with a crispy waffle cone like layering that was really hard to break until it sat a while. It was oddly addicting but also not that good? I can't explain it. We went to the cigar lounge area after dinner and had Mexican espresso martinis and watched football before heading home. There was little smoke smell but very minimal until it got later. Around 8:30 (on a Saturday night) ppl started smoking cigars and they opened the side windows and being 90degrees right now - it became less enjoyable so we decided to end the night.
