I was initially skeptical about coming here but am so glad that I did! And Ill stay a repeat customer. The service is pretty good too but even better are the prices which are reasonable. I just recently started going to this NY Fried location. My first two experiences, were good…read more However, on April 29, 2024, I made the decision to not frequent this location again. Let's start with the first major concern, as I was placing my order I noticed a tray of uncovered, unrefrigerated raw chicken sitting by the fryolator. I proceeded to order a large potato wedges. When I enquired how long the current wedges had been under the warmer light, I was advised approximately 1 hour maybe longer. I asked for fresh wedges. The counter person advised it would take 10 - 15 minutes to cook. After I confirmed the wait time would be fine, He proceeded to load the fryolator with unwashed and ungloved hands. WHAT?!! Before I could address this issue, an order came in through their online or maybe DoorDash system. The counter person then proceeded to pull out the wedges he dropped, shook the basket, placed it back in the oil and added raw chicken to the same basket as the wedges. As I was about to address him, a previous patron returned to complain about the amount of oil in his wings and that they were not crispy. The counter person argued with him for 1 - 2 minutes, when an older man emerged from the kitchen area. The counter person then spoke in his native tongue with the older man. From what occurred next, I believe the older man advised to replace the wings. The patron discarded the old wings and received a fresh order. Now, this is where everything fell completely apart. When I asked about the chicken being mixed with the potato wedges, I was advised that's their normal practice, so they can fill orders quickly. Being Servesafe Certified, this is not best practices for a restaurant. If the same basket was going to be utilized, then the wedges should have completed their cooking process. The oil temperature should have been checked to ensure it was back to temperature and then the chicken placed in the basket to cook for the allotted time. When I explained, this process, I was told Baby, this is how we always cook our food (I also had to let him know don't call me baby, I'm a paying customer). When the counter person refused to make fresh potato wedges for me after the cross contamination, I immediately requested a refund and left this location. Please be aware of how your food is being prepared if you're going to frequent this NY Fried. From unrefrigerated, unwrapped chicken to frying multiple items in the same basket at the same time, you are taking a chance with your health. If I could give a zero star I would. However Yelp will only allow a 1-star review. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

Now this place has seen better days, but this carryout has been here for a minute and we decided to go to see if the chicken boxes withstood the test of time. We placed our order over the phone: two 5 piece chicken wing combos with Western fries and a drink. We chose for our drinks the half and half ( iced tea and lemonade) and the triple mix ( iced tea, lemonade, and fruit punch). They also have a variety of snacks, sandwiches and fried seafood items, along with fresh salads and dessert items. We got there and we had to wait about 10 minutes before our order was ready. The lady at counter was pleasant and I swear, that could have been the same lady that's been here for a couple of decades. The ambiance was guarded, as this area is one you need to exercise caution when visiting, with a suggestion to visit as early as you can. We got our order and when we got home, it was still hot. The chicken wings were a nice size and fresh, crispy, well seasoned, and not greasy. The Western fries were nice wedges, hot and fresh, but did lack the seasoning that they had in previous years. The half and half and triple mix were good, but very sweet, even with the amount of ice in the drinks. All in all, a decent place to get chicken in the area.

The chicken was too hard and old to eat, so I just ate the fires and tossed the chicken. The new owners aren't as good as the previous ones.

This just adds something to the experience that you typically won't get elsewhere. If this place were in a different spot with more elevated furnishings, a wine program and fancy marketing it would be double, maybe triple the price. This is an approachable and extraordinarily delicious tasting menu from a talented chef with a support team that executes way above what you might expect. Ring the doorbell, stop in and have one of the better dinners you will find in Baltimore.

I did not feel rushed until the desert course was served with the check. The variety of the dishes was fun to experience; each course was very different. Puerto 511 does really well with seafood. My favorites courses were the Ceviche Amazonico and the Tamalito Verde. The flavors were incredible. The Pulpo en su Causa was also a very interesting dish. The combination of ingredients and the inclusion of a cold mashed potato component were both innovative. I was disappointed with the other courses, though. The veal was tough, the lamp chop was tough, and the desert was not very flavorful. The quinoa flan and the passionfruit ice cream did not match very well in flavor or texture. The restaurant building itself was ok. The ambiance did not indicate fine dining to me. The service was not very personable. I would like to come back sometime in a different season, when there is a new menu. But overall, I would say Puerto 511 is definitely a dining experience worth trying.
