CARIBE Restaurant - Schenectady, NY…read more I've had the chance to visit CARIBE twice now, and both times were for birthday celebrations. This is a cute Caribbean/Dominican restaurant with a casual order-at-the-counter setup and dine in- gives off a welcoming island vibe. The restaurant was clean, colorful, and full of Dominican flair. Both visits started with the Dominican Appetizer Platter, which in my opinion is perfect for sharing between 2-3 people depending on how hungry everyone is. It comes loaded with sweet plantains, crispy fried plantains, chicharrón, fried chicken tenders, fried cheese, salami, tostones, and French fries. If you're a fry lover, don't skip these! On my first visit, we ordered the pork chops and the pernil. The pernil was delicious--juicy, flavorful, and with the crispy top!! that my friend absolutely loved. The second time around, we both went with steak. I ordered the Bistec Salteado (sautéed steak) medium, while my friend ordered the grilled steak. Unfortunately, my steak came out well done. When I mentioned it, I was told that's how it's traditionally prepared Dominican-style. Needless to say, I wasn't happy and ended up not eating much of it. I did try my friend's grilled steak, and it was much better (for my taste). The birthday girl ordered the seafood rice and really enjoyed it. It was packed with seafood--definitely a dish for seafood lovers! For her birthday she got a choice of dessert and got the Flan- and a island girly her self she critiqued and loved!! Next time I'm in the area, I think I'll skip the entrées and order à la carte so I can sample more of the sides and appetizers. Overall, the food was good, the portions were generous, and the atmosphere was welcoming. The steak was a miss for me, but everything else was enjoyable enough that I'd return to try more of the menu.

It was a crowded Sunday night (and rightly so) so we sat at the full service bar instead. Huge shoutout to the girl behind the bar who served us - we didn't get her name, but she was just wonderful. We aren't big drinkers so we decided to split a sangria and a margarita and she happily split it into 3 tiny glasses for us. I ordered the steak bites off the dinner menu and the ham croquettes off of the happy hour menu. Both were incredibly flavorful and just the right size! The complementary bread and olives paired perfectly with it too! The ambiance of the restaurant was warm and inviting, a place where the community can come and gather, which I love to see when visiting new places. Dining at Boca Bistro was an excellent way to feel welcomed into Saratoga Springs and certainly makes me want to return again soon!

The steak app was super delicious, and so were the garlic shrimp. The bread and tomatoes was ok but the bread was slightly burnt which impacted the flavor. The omelette was good but not my favorite. We opted for churros for dessert and it was a large portion but very much so overcooked.

I first encountered Lidia there, and even though it's about an hour's trek for us, we happily make the trip--honestly, as much as we enjoy the market, we mostly go for the empanadas. She has so many vegan and vegetarian options but also meat empanadas too. I was a vegetarian for many years... but not anymore, thanks to Lidia's. There are plenty of delicious vegetarian choices but I couldn't resist branching out. The pork and beef are excellent, and the chicken is probably my favorite--perfectly seasoned and so satisfying. And then there are sweet empanadas too. Ohhh mama! There was one that I think had cream cheese and caramel... that one absolutely knocked my socks off. I genuinely needed a quiet moment just to savor it. The empanadas themselves are wonderfully crispy on the outside and absolutely packed on the inside--no skimpy fillings here. Each one is stuffed with generous portions and really interesting flavor combinations, with different textures that keep every bite exciting. And I cannot forget the green sauce. Don't even get me started. It's bright, dreamy, and full of lime and cilantro flavor. I basically pour it onto my plate and use the empanadas as little sauce sponges until the plate is spotless. Another thing that makes Lidia's Empanadas so special is Lidia herself. When you look at her Instagram, you can't help but fall in love with her commitment to her family and her community. You can really see how that love pours directly into the food she creates. She's passionate about making delicious food, about creating a warm and safe space for children and families at the farmers market, and about sharing her beautiful family and culture with others. That pride and care come through in every single empanada--and somehow make them taste even better. Every time I tell myself I'll try a different vendor, I end up right back at Lidia's--and I have zero regrets. Totally worth the trip upstairs at the Troy Farmers Market. Absolutely delicious.
